Electronic circuits provide us with the ability to control the transport and storage of electrons. However, the performance of electronic circuits is now becoming rather limited when digital information needs to be sent from one point to another. Photonics offers an effective solution to this problem by implementing optical communication systems based on optical fibers and photonic circuits. Unfortunately, the micrometer-scale bulky components of photonics have limited the integration of these components into electronic chips, which are now measured in nanometers. Surface plasmon-based circuits, which merge electronics and photonics at the Nano scale, may offer a solution to this size-compatibility problem. Here we review the current status and future prospects of plasmonics in various applications including plasmonic chips, light generation, and nanolithography.

DEVELOPMENT OF OPTICAL PARAMETER CALCULATIONS OF THE PROBES IN WATERDr. Ved Nath Jha
Fiber optic technology with the role of surface plasmons has tremendously advanced the sensing technique of various physical, chemical and biochemical parameters of materials. The working of the optical fiber sensor designed by us is founded on the principle of the absorption of the evanescent waves passing through the optical fiber. The technique is based on the evanescent wave penetration between two dielectric media satisfying the conditions of attenuated total internal reflections (ATR’s). In the present work, the cladding of the fiber is removed by a suitable technique, and Silver nanoparticles are deposited on it. The evanescent light waves passing out of the core of the fiber are absorbed by the metal nanoparticles. The wavelength of maximum absorption is specific to the metal nanoparticles as well as to the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium and occurs when the wavelength of evanescent light resonates with localized surface plasmon (LSP) wavelength of the nanoparticle. Noble metal nanoparticles of Silver and Gold exhibit LSP resonance in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. In this article, we report the characteristic parameters of three sensor probes a, b and c developed by researcher.
Study of highly broadening Photonic band gaps extension in one-dimensional Me...IOSR Journals
In this paper, we show theoretically that the reflectance spectra of one dimensional multilayer metal-organic periodic structure (1D MOPS) can be enhanced due to the addition of the organic constituents. We have used simple transfer matrix method to calculate the absorption, transmittance and reflectance of the 1D MOPS systems. The organic component like N,N’-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N’diphenyl-1; 1biphenyl-4; 4diamine (NPB) absorbs the light in ultra-violet, visible and infrared electromagnetic region and the structure with Ag-metal also having the tendency to absorb the light by the plasmaonic action and their refractive can be calculated from Drude equation. The reflectance spectra of multilayer 1D MOPS containing a variable number periodic of Ag/N,N’-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N’diphenyl-1; 1biphenyl-4; 4diamine (NPB) structure are calculated taking optical constant of NPB and Ag. The optical band gap and reflectance spectra of 1D MOPS of the considered structure is obtained in the visible and near infrared regions either with the variation of the metal layer thickness or thickness of the organic layer. From the results under investigation through TMM, tunability in the optical band gap was observed either change in thickness of the other layer 1/ or 2 or the angle of the incident. Due to optical absorption of the light in the different region of electromagnetic spectrum due to either N,N’-bis-(1-naphthyl)-N,N’diphenyl-1; 1biphenyl-4; 4diamine (NPB) or silver metal, the optical band gap of 1DMOPS shows the shift of band edges of λL and λR from ultra-violet to visible and the infrared with change the optical constant.

Do you have any question? : How to avoid this question and other classroom pe...Oka Kurniawan
Professors and Lecturers tend to fall to this same question over and over again, i.e. "Do you have any question?" The response can be typical with no one asking a question or only the same students ask the question. This talk is meant to equip postgraduates when they enter into a teaching career with some pedagogy on active questioning. The seminar will present how one can avoid asking the question "Do you have any question", and present two other classroom pedagogy technique that promotes students interaction in class, namely activating prior knowledge and making use of wait time.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

8. Conventional microdisk shows whispering gallery mode 8 Total electric field at the centre plane of the microdisk Electric field peak intensity at 1.47 µm.
9. Attaching metal layers hybridize the whispering gallery mode with surface plasmonpolariton mode 9 Total electric field at middle plane of the plasmonicmicrodisk. Comparison of whispering gallery mode and surface plasmonpolariton mode. Electric field enhancement is about 20,000 times at 1.47 µm.
10. We can couple the plasmonic source to an MIM waveguide with high efficiency 10 Metal Metal Semiconductor Insulator Metal Metal Gap = 20 nm Side view
11. We observed the surface plasmonpolariton wave traveling along the waveguide and the coupling efficiency is about 60% 11 Normalized electric field at the middle of the plane. The intensity at the waveguide is 60% of the microdisk.
Provide background why we pursueplasmonic. For smaller dimension with faster speed.
Free-space light cannot be coupled directly to surface plasmon mode. One has to use either prism, or grating, etc, to couple the light. It will be beneficial if we have a plasmonic source similar to laser that can be coupled directly to surface plasmonpolariton wave.
Previous works. Akimov showed light emission from quantum dots can be coupled to a metallic nanowire and propagate as surface plasmonpolariton wave. Koller use LED connected directly to metal surface, Biasing the LED creates some electron-hole which can excite surface plasmonpolariton in the metal surface which can then propagate as SPP wave.
Walters use an MIM structure and bias to create hot electrons which then excite surface plasmonpolariton on the MIM waveguide.
We use a similar structure as Walters (MIM), but in a cavity structure, which will increase the intensity of the field inside before it is coupled to MIM waveguide and circuits.
To study the structure, we use FDTD simulation with realistic solid-state model and Lorentz-Drude model for metal.
The figure shows the whispering gallery mode of a conventional microdisk. The light travels circling the microdisk through internal reflection. The right figure shows the microdisklase at the mode at 1.47 um.
The left figure shows the total electric field distribution after attaching two metal layers. The mode is no longer a pure whispering gallery mode but hybridized by the surface plasmonpolariton mode. The right figure shows the field is increased by about 20,000 times at 1.47 um. The middle figure shows a comparison between whispering gallery mode and surface plasmonpolariton mode. In SPP mode, the maximum field is at the interface between the dielectric and the metal. The vertical black line indicates the interface between the metal (left side, < 400nm) and the semiconductor (right side, > 400nm)
Left figure shows that the SPP mode inside the microdisk can couple to the MIM waveguide. The right figure shows that the frequency spectrum inside the waveguide follows exactly the spectrum inside the microdisk. And the intensity is coupled directly by about 60%.
