This document discusses supporting faculty in online and virtual classrooms. It outlines the advantages of enabling learners and increasing immediacy through technology, as well as some challenges. It recommends setting clear expectations, establishing types of feedback, and distinguishing levels of support. A learner-centered approach is advocated, reconceptualizing documentation and focusing on peer-to-peer mentoring. A philosophy of active, collaborative support that recognizes individual needs is presented. Requirements for faculty certification in online instruction include assessments, online courses, and modules focused on technology skills and applications.
