Hearing Impairment – What, how and when
 Normal loss of hearing faculty
 Conductive hearing loss resulting
from a problem in outer or middle
ear, including ear canal, ear drum

Hearing Impairment – Invisible disability
Limited access and exclusion from communication and social
interaction can have a significant impact on everyday life causing
feelings of loneliness, isolation and frustration
Individual’s ability to communicate with others where spoken
language gets delayed for children with hearing impairment

Only around 11% of total disabled population in India are literates
and around only 7% of the disabled population (Ages 15-59) are

 Suniye is dedicated NGO working among hearing impaired
children managed exclusively by parents of such children
 It started in 1995 and has benefited hundreds of children till
now
 We run a support school totally free of charge for
hearing impaired children, which encourages inclusive
education and helps in developing speech and language
 Make efforts to improve the existing facilities for the hearing
impaired in the field of education, employment etc.
 Bring all the hearing impaired children into the mainstream
and enable them to lead a normal life

Suniye – How are we different
We are one of the very few institutions in Delhi teaching
spoken language as opposed to sign language to
these children
As we believe that hearing impaired children can be
taught to listen and talk enabling them equal

Suniye – Key contributions and achievements

to INR 10,000 per hearing aid and
up to INR 60,000 for digital
hearing aids
The Ali Yavar Jung Institute for the
Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH)
has been recognised for issuing
hearing loss certificates for
Identity Cards.
Other contributions and achievements:
• Connecting with other organizations working among disabled persons and participating in different
forums to voice the problems of the disabled before the authorities to enable life of dignity for them
• Many of our students have cleared 10th and 12th examinations and some of them have done graduation
and or obtained technical qualifications or Post graduation

Suniye - Achievers
Shri. Vijay Krishnamani who has a profound hearing loss in both years did his B.Com and MCA and after
working as a software professional in organisations like Nucleus Software Exports, Virtusa, Infosys BPO
and Citibank Singapore is now working as Assistant Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services, Singapore.
He got the National Award for the Best Employee from the Government of India in 2008 and the Infosys
Excellence Award for Diversity in 2007.
He is also co-founder of DEOC – Diversity and Equal Opportunity Centre - an inclusive social enterprise
formed by people with and without disability with the vision to promote equal opportunity and inclusion in
all spheres of life. He has also co-authored a book “A Values Route to Business Success: The Why and
How of Employing Persons with Disability” – published by Confederation of Indian Industry.
Shri. Cheenu Madan who has a profound hearing loss in both the ears completed his BE in Computers
from the Delhi College of Engineering (now called Delhi Technological University). Thereafter, he did his
MS from the University of Florida, USA and worked as a Financial Software Developer in Bloomberg, New
York, USA.
He is now working on his startup, Foobaz Labs which builds web applications targeted at businesses from
all over the world. He founded Clinchpad – a deal focused CRM that enables you to close deals faster.

Suniye – Achievers Contd.
Shri. Prateek Asnani secured 85% marks in the 12th Board Examinations, 2010. He has since
then completed BE Mechanical Engineering from Netaji Subhash Chandra Institute of
Technology, Dwarka, Delhi. He is currently applying for MBA from some top-tier institutes.
Shri. Rajat Verma did his B.Com and simultaneously completed a Software Engineering course in
NIIT on a scholarship of 25000 INR. He has recently joined Nucleus Software Exports Ltd.,
Noida, as a Trainee Software Engineer.
Kumari Purvi Gupta is presently studying in Class X in Delhi Public School, Indirapuram, Noida,
UP. She obtained 90 percent marks in her Class IX examinations.
Kumari Aditi Dubey is presently studying in Class X in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gole Market, New
Delhi. She was given National Child Award for exceptional achievement in Roller Skating in 2009.
She was awarded 50000 INR by the Government of Delhi to further enhance her activities in
sports in 2013. She got the best student award in her school in 2013. She represented Delhi in
the Junior National Badminton Championship held at Meerut in September 2014 and secured
third position.

Suniye – Key activities
• Parents are counseled to teach the children to listen to sounds
and encourage them to talk
• Parents are asked to develop hobbies like painting, dancing,
sports etc. in the child
• Home visits are organized to counsel other family members
about the importance of their contribution in the child’s learning
process

Suniye – Key activities
• The school has a core group of experts and an experienced
faculty. The experienced educators for hearing impaired children
take up regular classes while senior parents assist and provide
their individual experiences.
• Performance which differs from child to child is reviewed on a
weekly basis and the earlier plan is modified accordingly.
Fathers, who think they have no role to play in bringing up such
children are called regularly and it is stressed upon and
explained how they can contribute to the progress of the child.
• A teaching plan is drawn for each student separately and
explained to the parents of the student who play an important
role.

• In all of Suniye’s programs children are made to participate to
build their confidence, and help them feel a sense of
achievement
• A few recent events are listed below
• Holi – Festival of Colors - celebrations were conducted on 5th March.
Children participated and learnt what Holi is all about
• Dance, Rhymes and fancy dress performance was given by the
children of Suniye for our visitors from Nederlands, Ms. Marion V.
van den Brink, District Gouverneur 2014-2015, District 1570 (). From
the Rotary Club of Delhi Heritage Sirish Jain, President, Sameer
Gupta, Dinish Jaju, Satish Rakyan, Rajesh Sachdeva and Rajendra
Mohan.
• We celebrated our Annual Day in 2014 with a performance
“Aatankvad” – a dance drama choreographed by Bhairvi Mishra on
9th May 2014.

to help in admission
• Suniye Counsellors visit schools where our children study to
interact with the Principals and teachers about how they can
help them like:
a. Allowing them to sit in the first row in class
b. Making them sit next to a good and helpful child
c. Talking while facing the child
• Hold annual interaction programs with principals and teachers to
remove doubts and create better mutual understanding of the
child’s needs

Copyright © 2015 Suniye All rights reserved. 3 Hearing Impairment – What, how and when  Normal loss of hearing faculty  Conductive hearing loss resulting from a problem in outer or middle ear, including ear canal, ear drum  Sensorineural hearing loss resulting from damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve  Mixed hearing loss when someone has both conductive and sensorineural hearing problem  Congenital i.e. present at birth or acquired soon after birth  It can be caused by hereditary and non hereditary genetic factors or by certain complication during pregnancy and childbirth  Acquired which may occur at any age can be due to  Infectious diseases such as meningitis, measles and mumps  Ageing  Chronic ear infections  Injury to head or ear  Pre natal stage  Pre lingual or Post lingual stage What is it? Copyright © 2015 Suniye All rights reserved. 4 Hearing Impairment – Invisible disability Limited access and exclusion from communication and social interaction can have a significant impact on everyday life causing feelings of loneliness, isolation and frustration Individual’s ability to communicate with others where spoken language gets delayed for children with hearing impairment Functional Impact Social and Emotional Impact Hearing impairment is an invisible disability which can’t be detected until an interaction or communication between two persons take place Only around 11% of total disabled population in India are literates and around only 7% of the disabled population (Ages 15-59) are main workers* Economic Impact Source for Economic Impact : Census 2011 * Main workers are those who have worked for 6 months or more during reference period of census survey 2011

Copyright © 2015 Suniye All rights reserved. 6 Suniye – About us  Suniye is dedicated NGO working among hearing impaired children managed exclusively by parents of such children  It started in 1995 and has benefited hundreds of children till now  We run a support school totally free of charge for hearing impaired children, which encourages inclusive education and helps in developing speech and language  Make efforts to improve the existing facilities for the hearing impaired in the field of education, employment etc.  Bring all the hearing impaired children into the mainstream and enable them to lead a normal life

Suniye helps the children to use the residual hearing through use of hearing aids Counsel Assess and Fit Develop Integrate & Monitor • Counsel the parents on how to tackle the problems effectively • Through home visits counsel other family members to create awareness on their role in child’s progress • Assessing the child for hearing loss through audiometry tests • Based on assessment fit suitable hearing aid for the child • Teach the children spoken and written language, social responsibilities, community living, general knowledge and subjects needed to go to a regular school. • Help parents in admission of the child in normal school • Interact with school authorities to monitor progress of the child Improved social interaction and communication & equal opportunities

Copyright © 2015 Suniye All rights reserved. 11 Suniye – Key contributions and achievements Due to our efforts Govt. of Delhi ordered admission of all disabled children in the Govt. run and Govt. aided schools On our request Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Dept. of Education New Delhi have reserved 3% for disabled individuals Delhi Transport Corporation gives free passes for disabled children Govt. of Delhi recognized 60 decibel loss in both the ears as hearing impairment for all purposes On our request Govt. enhanced hearing aid reimbursement ceiling to INR 10,000 per hearing aid and up to INR 60,000 for digital hearing aids The Ali Yavar Jung Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) has been recognised for issuing hearing loss certificates for Identity Cards. Other contributions and achievements: • Connecting with other organizations working among disabled persons and participating in different forums to voice the problems of the disabled before the authorities to enable life of dignity for them • Many of our students have cleared 10th and 12th examinations and some of them have done graduation and or obtained technical qualifications or Post graduation

Vijay Krishnamani who has a profound hearing loss in both years did his B.Com and MCA and after working as a software professional in organisations like Nucleus Software Exports, Virtusa, Infosys BPO and Citibank Singapore is now working as Assistant Consultant, Tata Consultancy Services, Singapore. He got the National Award for the Best Employee from the Government of India in 2008 and the Infosys Excellence Award for Diversity in 2007. He is also co-founder of DEOC – Diversity and Equal Opportunity Centre - an inclusive social enterprise formed by people with and without disability with the vision to promote equal opportunity and inclusion in all spheres of life. He has also co-authored a book “A Values Route to Business Success: The Why and How of Employing Persons with Disability” – published by Confederation of Indian Industry. Shri. Cheenu Madan who has a profound hearing loss in both the ears completed his BE in Computers from the Delhi College of Engineering (now called Delhi Technological University). Thereafter, he did his MS from the University of Florida, USA and worked as a Financial Software Developer in Bloomberg, New York, USA. He is now working on his startup, Foobaz Labs which builds web applications targeted at businesses from all over the world. He has since then completed BE Mechanical Engineering from Netaji Subhash Chandra Institute of Technology, Dwarka, Delhi. He is currently applying for MBA from some top-tier institutes. Shri. Rajat Verma did his B.Com and simultaneously completed a Software Engineering course in NIIT on a scholarship of 25000 INR. He has recently joined Nucleus Software Exports Ltd., Noida, as a Trainee Software Engineer. Kumari Purvi Gupta is presently studying in Class X in Delhi Public School, Indirapuram, Noida, UP. She obtained 90 percent marks in her Class IX examinations. Kumari Aditi Dubey is presently studying in Class X in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gole Market, New Delhi. She was given National Child Award for exceptional achievement in Roller Skating in 2009. She was awarded 50000 INR by the Government of Delhi to further enhance her activities in sports in 2013. She got the best student award in her school in 2013. She represented Delhi in the Junior National Badminton Championship held at Meerut in September 2014 and secured third position.

Current Future • First model support school for hearing impaired in Delhi with all world class facilities • Create resource center for other NGOs to learn about quality education for hearing impaired • Enable increased training to regular teachers for bringing in inclusive environment • Make the Government policies more Inclusive. • Provide equal opportunities to hearing impaired to develop and succeed • Partially constructed support school located in Sector II R.K.Puram • 4 full time teachers • Secretary who runs Operations of Suniye • Monthly operating cost of 100,000 INR Short Term Mid Term Long Term Regular financial support for running and maintaining school which cover expenses like • Appoint Full-time Operations Head and Director of Education at 50000 INR per month per person • Hire 2-4 more teachers at 40000 INR per month per person. • Annual Salaries of other 4 teachers and 3 support staff • Meet Monthly Operating Costs Financial support to develop world class facilities provided to all hearing impaired children for free and they include: • Audiology Center • Counseling Services • Programming and adjustment of hearing aids • In house service support for hearing aids • Essential supplies and hearing aid accessories • Financial support of 50,00,000 INR to complete the partially constructed support school to make it into the first model school for hearing impaired in New Delhi. • Replicate this model into every other State of India

The experienced educators for hearing impaired children take up regular classes while senior parents assist and provide their individual experiences. • Performance which differs from child to child is reviewed on a weekly basis and the earlier plan is modified accordingly. Fathers, who think they have no role to play in bringing up such children are called regularly and it is stressed upon and explained how they can contribute to the progress of the child. • A teaching plan is drawn for each student separately and explained to the parents of the student who play an important role. Children participated and learnt what Holi is all about • Dance, Rhymes and fancy dress performance was given by the children of Suniye for our visitors from Nederlands, Ms. Marion V. van den Brink, District Gouverneur 2014-2015, District 1570 (). From the Rotary Club of Delhi Heritage Sirish Jain, President, Sameer Gupta, Dinish Jaju, Satish Rakyan, Rajesh Sachdeva and Rajendra Mohan. • We celebrated our Annual Day in 2014 with a performance “Aatankvad” – a dance drama choreographed by Bhairvi Mishra on 9th May 2014.
