Warld War II
World War 2 was a gruesome war that had a terrible outcome. Millions of people were killed. Cities
were destroyed. Countries were bankrupted. During this war, the US played a significant role. The US
had a major strategy called Island Hopping, in which the US would take over islands in the
Philippines while slowly moving towards striking distance of Japan. Another important happening in
this was not necessarily a slow moving conquering, but a date. This day was D Day. A few years in
through World War 2, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This caused the US to take
action. The US came up with a very clever strategy to get back at Japan. They knew that the bombing
of Pearl Harbor had a very heavy emotional tone on Americans so they knew they needed to bomb
Japan back. However, US bombers could not make it across the Pacific Ocean. So, the US came up
with an idea to defeat many islands in the Philippines while slowly creeping towards Japan. This idea
was then called Operation Cartwheel . The first objective of the US in Operation Cartwheel was to
take Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands of the Philippines. On August 7, 1942, the US Marines
invaded the islands after naval preparatory shelling. They landed on the north beaches which were east
of the Tenaru River. For three months they suffered from diseases such as: diarrhea, dysentery,
malaria, and skin fungus. But they still managed to take over an airfield. At the end of

Merging Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social...
The two theories I have decided to merge are Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social
Bond Theory. I picked General Strain Theory because it does a good job at discussing some of the
things that can trigger the release of a person s negative emotions which in turn may lead to deviant
behavior. I also decided to write about Social Bond Theory because it describes some of the factors
that keep people from committing crime. Both of the theories have strengths and weaknesses
individually, but when merged they help fill in each other s gaps. (Agnew, 2011; Hirschi, 2011) +1
(888) 295 7904 The proposal of Robert Agnew s General Strain Theory in explaining criminal
deviance is based on three concepts. The first concept is that people ... Show more content on

(Agnew, 2011) There are a lot of people who have lost their cell phones due to their own carelessness
or it was stolen. Anyone who has lost their cell phone has experienced the first type of strain. Agnew
plainly describes the strain as a result when individual s lose something good (Agnew, 2011. p. 190).
The description Agnew gives comes off as being ambiguous and incomplete. Arguably, the strain of
losing something good can be interpreted a certain way by someone and a completely different way by
another person. A perfect example would be a drug dealer losing his cocaine. According to this theory
he is more apt to commit a deviant act to get his cocaine back. Obviously the problem here is the fact
that he was already committing a crime before the strain ever took place. On the other, a victim of
identity theft has their entire savings wiped out. Consequently, due to their desperate need for money
they become a prostitute. In this case the theory seems to hold true. The scenarios above appear to be
completely different in all but two ways. The two ways in which they are similar are they both lost
something important to them. The word good is not defined by what society approves or disapproves
of. What s considered to be good is based on the individual s own definition. The second similarity is
that their loss triggered negative emotions such as anger, depression, and frustration. In these two
similarities the core concept of General

The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and...
14 October 2012 American Politics Midterm Exam Question 3 The Importance of Elections as a
Linkage Institution and Voting Linkage institutions can be defined as institutions that connect citizens
with the government. Examples of linkage institutions include elections, political parties, interest
groups, and the media. Elections specifically are supposed to encourage public participation in the
selection of governmental officials. Unfortunately, low voter turnout has proved that elections are an
imperfect linkage institution. Elections depend on voters to be successful, and some factors that relate
to the likelihood of voting include age, education, and race. Although some people underestimate the
power of the vote, voter turnout is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even after the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment, African Americans were disenfranchised in the
South by intimidation and electoral trickery, including whites only primaries, rigged literacy tests, and
poll taxes (Patterson 2011, p. 180). The Freedom Riders rode through the South, enduring harassment
and imprisonment to encourage other African Americans to vote. Voter turnout in African American
communities is greatly encouraged. Personally, coming from an African American family, I was
strongly encouraged by my parents and grandparents to vote when I was of legal age. My family
instilled the importance of voting in me at a very young age. Although voter turnout among African
Americans is still fairly low, in the 2008 presidential election African Americans had the second
highest voter turnout, behind non Hispanic Caucasians (African Americans, n.d.). Race can influence
voter turnout because with African Americans specifically, although rates are getting better, they are
still not high. One factor that decreases voter turnout is the misconception that a person s vote does not
matter. Alienation is a feeling of personal powerlessness that includes the feeling that the government
does not care about individual people. These people believe that the government will not respond to
their concerns even if they do vote. The problem is that a large portion of the population shares this
attitude. People can have negative

Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen and Madame Bovary, by...
Often times many authors depict their characters inner lives as well as their actions within their
literary works. Other instances authors exemplify their probing of social problems, and the limitations
society holds on its residents. In the two literary works, Ibsen s Hedda Gabler and Gustave Flaubert s
Madame Bovary, they share a common portrayal: the main heroine faces the complications of societal
restraints. The novella by Ibsen and Flaubert s novel emphasize upon women that struggle with what
can and cannot be done in their society. The protagonists Hedda Gabler in Ibsen s Hedda Gabler and
Emma Bovary of Flaubert s Madame Bovary are estranged individuals thwarted by society. Many of
Ibsen s plays highlight a character s need for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this era, divorce was unheard of; people were expected to love their spouse, in sickness and in
health, no matter what the circumstances. Hedda understands those circumstances which is why she
says, Oh yes, Judge I was going to say, you make your bed and then you lie in it (255). It implies that
she distinguishes her place in society and even though she is unhappy she just has to cope with it.
Society plays a major part in marriages back in the day, by creating barriers and limits that some
woman could not handle, such as Emma Bovary. In Flaubert s Madame Bovary, Emma Bovary is
confined to an unhappy life as a result of the society she dwelled in. Social status was imperative
during the time period; the more money one had, the higher up they in class. Throughout the novel it
mentioned about Bourgeois ways because of Charles and Emma. They are put into that social class
because of how much money they possess as well as expend. The story revolves around Emma buying
and selling luxurious items either to give them to her lovers of her numerous liaisons or to pay for her
debt. Knowing what type of person Emma is, she possibly would never be happy with whoever she
settled with, but she did not chose to marry Charles. Her father had decided her future with Charles
because during the time, parents had the authority of choosing their children s spouses. Similar to

Ford Vs Wainwright Case Analysis
Analyzing the case in detail would reveal that there were strong extenuating circumstances in the
ruling. The evidence of guilt in the case was overwhelming. There were eye witnesses to the crime
along with the fact that the victim knew the defendant and lived long enough to identify him as the
perpetrator. The state argued that the murder victim s statements relating to the defendant s cutting her
throat while dying fell under the excited utterance exception rule against hearsay since they were
made under the stress of the event. But with the testimony of the eyewitnesses the case was basically
easy to prosecute. During the trial there was no mention of Singleton being mentally ill. He was not

In the eyes of medical personnel it is an assumption that antipsychotic drugs could compensate for
mental illness, which typically takes long periods of time to thoroughly diagnose, and thus there is no
incentive to attempt to correct for the mental illness since there is no guarantee of recovery. The
attempt to medicate the offender in order to terminate his life is basically a waste of the tax payer s
money. The decision should be made to either label him as mentally ill, medicate him in order to make
him better so that he might live a sane life or to terminate his life due to the extremities of his crime.
The main goal of capital punishment is the forfeiture of the offenders participation in society by means
of termination of life and that terminating a life does not require any special condition to undergo
there is no conclusive need to ensure the healthy condition of an offender who is subject to
termination of life. If the health of the offender is irrelevant then it can also be stated that the current
state of mental illness has no bearing on the proceedings and there is no need to correct this situation
prior to execution with a medication. (Grinfeld, M,

Comparing Maus I And Maus II
Maus I and Maus II: Intricate Frames of Identity and Experience
Maus is self referential a number of times throughout each volume, with a variety of purposes. The
narrative moves through several interpretive frameworks Vladek s perspective, and Artie s
perspective, both of his father and of his father s story and how he s choosing to tell it. Throughout
these various levels of interpretation, questions are posed in innumerable ways. Vladek s behavior
when he talks about (or even uses) his experiences, Artie s perspective of his father, and the symbolic
representation of the animals, are all expressions of identity that come through as the result of the
individual s frame of interpretation. The text and its subjects are self aware in a variety ... Show more

In the first volume, Artie ruminates on the subject of Jewish stereotypes and the ways in which his
father fits into them. In one panel, he says, In some ways he s just like the racist caricature of the
miserly old Jew (Maus I, Spiegelman 131). It s important to Artie to portray his father accurately, but
he s understandably concerned about playing into stereotypes. Just like the animal and nationality
stereotypes, the stereotypes that Vladek fits into work in two ways. Vladek is the miserly old Jew but
the text shows over and over again that this same pragmatic tendency helped him survive a lot of
times in the war, and so in some ways validates the practice. It s important to note though, that the
tendency to save negatively affected Mala and Artie; they both carried a lot of resentment towards
Vladek in the ways that he denied them a lot of basic necessities, and in a lot of ways prioritized
material items and money over members of his family. So while the text shows an explanation of sorts
for Vladek s behavior, it doesn t necessarily make excuses for the problems he caused with his actions
later on. The engagement between cultural perceptions and lived experience continues the subversive
action that is the basic underlying function of the texts. (Maus II,

The Positive Causes Of The American Revolution
Amid growing tension between England and her American Colonists, the British passed the
Intolerable Acts, a law that created a punitive tax for the destruction of Tea in the Boston Harbor.
Though the British saw the Intolerable Acts as a compromise in dealing with the vandalism, the
American colonists were enraged. Their anger led to the creation of the First Continental Congress and
paved the path for the conflict of the American Revolution.
The American Revolution lasted from 1754 to 1788 with the commission of the intolerable acts
occurring in the midst of this during 1774. Great Britain taxed the colonists after the French and
Indian war. This battle marked the beginning of the Revolution. Colonists had been controlling their
own government for years when the British saw fit to tax the 13 colonies. The intolerable acts only
served to fuel the colonist s anger and ultimately ended in the independence of those colonies. Though
the effects may have been negative for the British, the positive outcome for the Americans marked the
beginning of The United States history.
There was a series of events leading up to the intolerable acts that all added to the ire of the colonists.
With a fitting name, the coercive acts were a ploy by the British to gain back control of the colonies.
The Boston Port Act served to close the trade in the city and shut down all commerce there.
Massachusetts Government Act and the Administration of Justice Act were both attempts to gain back

The WADA states that the best way to prevent gene doping is a combination of regulation, education,

of gene therapies by healthy athletes. If the WADA really wants to help stop the misuse of gene

Political Influences On Poverty
A child s political environment and natural environment can have many effects on their development
through political and environmental influences on poverty. For example, governments can make
inadequate and oftentimes harmful decisions including those that can cause or worsen poverty, natural
disasters can cause someone to become impoverished, and childhood poverty is more common in
those from rural areas.
The government has a definite role in the lives of children who are affected by poverty and in some
cases may be the ones who caused the poverty in the first place. Public servants tend to keep their jobs
in recessions, and when poverty is widespread government s attempt to make programs to help
alleviate poverty which sometimes never come to fruition, in many cases due to not restructuring the
economy when things stop working, a country s leadership can actually cause poverty or worsen it
dramatically. (Gilbert). When it comes to failed programs South Africa is a prime example. South
Africa, a middle income country according to the UN, has very high child poverty rates. It was found
using the 2001 census data that 81% of children experience income and material deprivation
(Whitworth, Wilkinson 2). This shows that even countries that should be making enough money for
poverty to not be a widespread issue still struggle with childhood poverty. The South African
government attempted to help those struggling with the Social Maintenance Grant (SMG), but this

Security Background And Threats Of Terrorism Essay
One. Security background and threats of terrorism
Since the beginning of a 21st century, an international security environment has been proved to be
more volatile, unpredictable, complex and ambiguity with their challenging effects in various ways.
Thus, those challenging situations take into particular considerations when combating terrorism
throughout the national security strategy. The civil war, sectarian spillovers of crises, state catastrophe
in central Africa and the Middle East will likely to be continued with growing scale and concern.
Most worrisome is the emergence in Iraq and Syria of the self proclaimed Islamic State known as ISIS
whose brutal violence, ability to capture and hold territory, significant financial resources, and
impressive strategic acumen make it a threat like any other the United States has faced in the
contemporary era. The Radical Islamic terrorism as An act of terror and an act of hate is well nested in
Iraq and Syria will also likely to cause more instability and extreme violence in the region, and in
entire world.
Moreover, the growing threats of terrorism with protracting instability in specific region cause 2nd
and 3rd order of security effects not only in European continent but also cause the danger in U.S. soil.
For instance, due to recent instability in Iraq and Syria, thousands of millions of refugees are moving
from the Middle East to the neighboring countries and European continent for seeking safe heavens.

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of A Few Of The Speeches By...
The term terrorism is notoriously hard to explain as there is no international consensus on the
definition legally or academically thus is often used to mean many different things by pundits,
politicians and the media. A highly complex phenomenon, terrorism stands at the forefront of
international agendas, and the term is associated with a wide variety of groups all over the world. So
the question is what constitutes terrorism? The dictionary definition is violence or threat of violence
against non combatants or civilians, usually motivated by religious or political ideologies. This paper
aims to do a critical discourse analysis of a few of the speeches by US Leaders George Bush and
Barrack Obama in the aftermath of the attacks on the world trade centre in 2001. It draws on Schiffrin
et al (2003), Foucault s and Van Dijk s concepts of critical discourse analysis and aims to reveal how
Bush and Obama carefully selected emotionally charged language, expressions and gestures to create
fear and panic in the world and how they projected terrorism negatively all the while advocating and
justifying similar strategies and calling it anti terrorism.
Terrorism is a highly complex phenomenon with over one hundred definitions all over the world, it
stands at the forefront of many international agendas. The complexity of this term means it can be
used to describe many different things, depending on the pundits, politicians or media outlet s views
and ideologies. In simple terms, A

contemporary concerns and issues will always involve a reader Through the study of the novel The

themes demonstrated in this story, the most interesting aspect was relationships. In particular, the

In a discussion with Fowler over the desires of the Vietnamese people, Pyle explains, They ll be
forced to believe what they are told and won t be allowed to think for themselves (Greene 86). In this
assumption, Pyle believes that the Soviets are controlling the Vietnamese and forcing them under a
communist government, which is parallel to the United States idea that Ho Chi Minh was a puppet for
Stalin and the Soviet Union. Rather than pursuing his own goals, Pyle believes that communism
would build Vietnam into a satellite nation for the Soviet Union. However, Fowler sees that the
Vietnamese were not Soviet puppets and he truly takes into account the aspirations of the Vietnamese
people. In the same discussion with Pyle, Fowler counters him with the belief that the Vietnamese
people just want enough rice... They don t want to be shot at. They want one day to be the same as
another (Greene 86). Fowler conveys the displeasure of the Vietnamese through the use of blunt
diction, accentuating the importance of the common man. The Vietnamese were not after a communist
government, they were working towards a populist nationalist movement that would guarantee their
independence from Western powers and reunify them. Fowler s perspective of the Vietnamese s
intentions is supported by nationalist and revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh. In a speech explaining
what the Vietnamese were hoping to achieve through communism, Ho Chi Minh lists, reunification,

Plate Tectonics Theory
The good thing about science is that it s true whether you believe in it or not, stated Neil Degrasse
Tyson. The Theory of Plate Tectonics is accredited to most of the creations of mountain ranges, the
Centennial Drifting Theory, earthquakes, and other landforms nature has made.
The idea of plate tectonics was formulated in the 1960s (Andel). Plate tectonics explains the origin of
Earth s surface features ( Plate Tectonics BrainPop). Alfred Wegner was just guessing about the way
plate tectonics were formed and no one believed him (Plate Tectonics). Scientists thought all hills and
uneven ground was due to the Earth shrinking. Scientists later found out that plates move about 5 to
10 cm. per year. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, researchers found out that plate
tectonics had influenced the composition of Earth s atmosphere and the oceans. After Wegner died, his
Theory of Pangea was proven correct due to further research on plate tectonics (Kratochvil). Plate
tectonics is also a prime cause of long term climate change (Andel). Plate tectonics also give the rock
cycle the ability to keep continuing. ( Plate Tectonics BrainPop)
Plates tectonics are very complex, they have many steps that make them work like they do. Plates float
on top of the mantle, it is the part of the earth between the core. The mantle starts to churn in circular
convection currents as they drag the tectonic plates along ( Plate Tectonics BrainPop). The Earth s
crust is split into

The author s main idea is that The challenge to the industry in Japan is finding enough young people
willing and able to create and export Japan s products of popular culture, while the challenger in
America is creating an audience that will continue to consume those products as it ages. When he saw
his friend tried to make her daughter stop crying with Totoro, he thought there is something. He also
realized that many of his American friends have a copy of Miyzaki films in their living room after
that. But two questions occurred. Why Japan? And why now? So he decided to take interviews to

He mentioned the word Otaku. He said that the term embraced by Americans. Because of the success

The Importance Of Cochlear Implants
Before the panel discussion, I never took the time to think about how much time and consideration a
parent must go through when deciding whether or not they should implant their child with cochlear
implants. After watching Sound and Fury, I learned the importance of the Deaf community and their
culture and that cochlear implants are not always seen as a good thing. Hearing from the perspective
of our guests, and seeing this decision from the eyes of audiologists/teachers of the Deaf, I see that
cochlear implantation is anything but an easy decision.
Since advancements in technology and evolution of the cochlear implant since its first debut, our guest
really opened my eyes to how much harder of a choice this has become for parents of Deaf

The Young Man Of A Slave, Jarvius Cotton
The young man of a slave, Jarvius Cotton, experienced the harsh treatment of consequences
that resulted in the prevention of voting, but more than a debar in society s participation, the lack
of opportunity to capture the full force of freedom that has the capacity to obliterate the force of
captivity in a broken system that declares itself just has enforced him to abide by such laws
instead.
Cotton s story further depicts the old saying, The more things change, the more they remain the
same . (Alexander) In new generations, new tactics have been used for achieving the same
goals in order to improve the standards we mark to meet in the world, specifically in today s
state of society.

(Alexander) In the pre civil rights movement African Americans suffered a variety of ordained or
legislative
setbacks and disadvantages such as racial segregation throughout the education system, equal
or rather unequal opportunity in employment, access to public facilities, housing, voting rights,
and freedom from racial discrimination, which would become future impediments.
It was as if they were in a constant mode towards the subjection and oppression of a cylinder
filled with the degradation of invasive structures deliberately aimed at and employed to
maintain the status quo of setting them up to fail rather than succeed. Furthermore, to paint an even
bleaker picture for the baseline economic status of African
American families living in the U.S., the net worth of the average black household in the United
States is $6,314, compared with $110,500 for the average white household, according to 2011 census
data. The gap has worsened in the last decade, and the United States now has a greater wealth gap by
race. Whites in America on average own almost 18 times as much as blacks. The black white income
gap is roughly 40 percent greater today than it was in 1967. In the New York Times s article, When

Non Greasy Pastes As Semisolid Dosage Form
Based on United State Pharmacopeia, pastes are defined as semisolid dosage forms that contain one or
more drug substances intended for topical application. (Pharmaceutical Dosage Form, 2009) Pastes
are intended for application to the skin, oral cavity, or mucous membranes. Pastes are usually prepared
from fats, fatty oils, petrolatum, paraffin, waxes, glycerin or water by mixing homogeneously
powdered drug with the foregoing materials as bases. (General Requirements for Pharmaceutical
Preparation) There are two classes of paste which are fatty pastes and non greasy pastes which is made
from single phase aqueous gel.
Although the preparations of pastes are similar to ointment, there are still having differences between
paste and ointment. Compared to ointments and gels, pastes contain a high proportion of finely
powdered medicaments. Pastes are generally composed of ointment bases that contain a high
concentration (frequently 50%w/w) of dispersed drug. Hence, the viscosity of pastes is higher than
that of pharmaceutical ointment. The base for pastes may be anhydrous (liquid or soft paraffin) or
water soluble (glycerol or a mucilage). (Prashant, 2010)
Furthermore, pastes take some advantages over the ointments. Pastes are more often used for
protective action compared to ointments. This is because pastes ordinarily do not flow at body
temperature so it can serve as protective coatings. Fatty pastes that have a high proportion of
hydrophilic solids are less greasy and more

Is Lady Macbeth To Blame
Have you ever been tempted to do something that you knew was morally wrong. This happens a lot in
life, but some cases are more serious than others. Sometimes, the people who a person loves love and
trust the most could tempt a person to do terrible things. Macbeth , written by William Shakespeare, is
a play that recognizes that this is possible, even to people who were a good hearted person, in this case
Macbeth. The character who is the most responsible for the downfall of Macbeth is Lady Macbeth
because she constantly taunted and tempted Macbeth to murder King Duncan. Many people believe
that Lady Macbeth was tricked by the Devil to tempt Macbeth to murder Duncan, and they then
accuse of the witches of being the cause but that is not the case. Although it ... Show more content on

When Macbeth was trying to stop things from going too far Lady Macbeth decides to taunt him. But
screw your courage to the sticking place [a]nd we ll not fail (1.7.70 71). During this discussion Lady
Macbeth basically calls Macbeth a coward and that if he follows her plan they will succeed. That was
a major reason for Macbeth actually deciding to murder action. Also Lady Macbeth tries to make him
seem like a traitor when he backs out of the plan, which is the starting point for Macbeth s downfall.
William Shakespeare tries to show readers that even though Macbeth was evil as king, he is not
entirely at fault for becoming filled with greed and anger. Even though people control their own
actions they can be tempted to do wrong things due to peer pressure. Although some can just blame
Macbeth, we need to remind ourselves that Macbeth wasn t going to kill Duncan, until Lady Macbeth
persuaded him to. Even if it was mostly Macbeth s fault for not controlling his actions, Macbeth
reminds us that when more than one person are involved with an action of evil, there is never just one
person to

Hariprasad, V. Yoga Increases the Volume of the Hippocampus in Elderly Subjects. Indian Journal of
Psychiatry, vol. 55, July 2013. This study is similar to the first two studies, except it focuses on the
elderly and goes beyond stress reduction. This journal shows that yoga can alter the structure of the
brain in some cases. It does not just merely change hormone levels. Yoga is able to increase the size of
the brain in the elderly. For several decades, scientist believe brain damage to be quite permanent. The
brain usually can rewire itself to function more efficiently. However, very rarely has it essentially
grown back.

Mindfulness Reflection Paper
I have a somewhat regular, yet sincere contemplative mindfulness practice that helps me understand
why I experience life the way I do both internally and externally. I get to see my own urges, those I m
not really aware of such as the urge to multi task. Practicing mindfulness meditation and other
mindfulness practices I learned to become in touch with my own urges and to control them through
awareness and self discipline. So, here are a few reflections for your coffee time. As you sip on your
deliciously made aromatic coffee, tea or hot cocoa accept these thoughts for your reflection.
Finally, at the 3rd mindfulness class I took with Daniel, I decided to do the homework he had
suggested to everyone, which was to do one thing we do routinely during the day, mindfully. That is to
be with the experience of it and fully giving it our undivided attention. For example, if we chose
brushing our teeth, he said, to brush slowly, feel every stroke as the brush moved around the mouth,
what it felt like, the taste of the tooth paste, what the mind was doing; observe everything about that
experience, while also focusing on our breath. This was our mindfulness exercise, which to me didn t
sound too exciting. It took a lot of self discipline to be able to stay with an activity and not wonder off
in the mind. So,I never did the tooth brush exercise.
Until that final day of having burnt my 967th pita bread and screamed to myself, this is so annoying. It
s not acceptable anymore!

The Jury Of A Jury
Jury Paper The concept of juries dates back to the eighth century. Instead of it being an impartial body
of unbiased people, juries interrogated prisoners. It was not until the fourteenth century that juries
would start to become what we know them today. About three million people are called to serve jury
duty every year in the United States. On average only 1.2 million actually serve their request
according to the American Bar Association. A jury is picked from a jury pool. The jury pool is made
up of around sixty people. These sixty people are questioned and screened by both lawyers to weed
out any that are to bias toward the subject of the case. The first part of jury is picking one person to

Juries in other countries are not quite like ours. In the United Kingdom they do not have a grand jury.
If the judge or police feels that the crime is serious enough it is sent straight to a jury trial. Other
countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have started to adopt the concept as well. Other
than this a jury trial is set up relatively the same as they are in the United States. Both sides are able to
present evidence to a jury and the jury discusses and comes up with a verdict. A former New York
judge, Sol Wathtler, once said A district attorney could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich.
(Hans, 2008). This is because a prosecution is able to get a jury to believe anything due to they are
able to present evidence such as hearsay and illegally obtained evidence that wouldn t be used in a
jury trial. The defense is not allowed to be in the court when a grand jury is in session, that is the
reason the prosecution is able to present that evidence. This is one major reason why many countries
stopped showing cases in a grand jury. In the United States .027 percent of trial by juries are tried
unfairly. That gives our justice system a 99.973 percent success rate according to researchers from
National Geographic (Hughes, 2014). In a case known as the Affluenza Teen; teenager Ethan Couch

Essay on Collusion Between British Airways and Virgin
The tacit collusion case to be discussed involves the illegal collusion and setting of fuel surcharges to
commercial and cargo transatlantic fares between British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic Airways
(Virgin). The factors which contributed to its success will be discussed, as well as why, and its
implications, of becoming public. To begin with, it would be beneficial to define both collusive
behaviour and the nature of the competition involved in the aviation industry.
Collusion is the act of a number of firms within an industry agreeing to set a certain price, output or
another parameter and is almost always against the law. This is as they all compete in the given
industry, with the setting of prices or outputs done in favour of the ... Show more content on

As the nature of the good is a seat on a plane, clearly capacity constraints are present in the form of
the limited seating on aircraft, as well as the inability to in the short run increase output beyond full
capacity. During the setting of price, clear communication will most likely result in a non static
equilibrium. As well as this, the symmetry in terms of the market and cost structures has played a part
in creating a successful cartel. Each firm produces a relatively homogenous good in terms of economy,
business or first class, with a limited amount of features it can differentiate itself from its competitors.
As well as this, using Figure 1, which will be discussed later on, demonstrates that the main costs to
an airline are those which cannot be easily reduced or offset, most notably the cost of fuel and aircraft
maintenance. Therefore both firms have near perfect knowledge of the cost structure and revenue
through observing prices, and will aid in choosing a certain pricing strategy.
What follows will be a detailed discussion of the specific market conditions which lead to the
successful collusion between BA and Virgin.
The UK Transatlantic Flight market as a whole can be said to hold many key factors which have led to
successful collusion. The first is due to the high levels of

The Problem Of Drug Addicts
Currently, the society is employing a significant amount of money and efforts to deal with the
continuous increasing of drug addicts within their roots. In fact, the drug problem can be considered
by the majority as the greatest problem of the 21th century. Just look, on how it worsened in the last
years. Now, it seems that the range of consumers has expanded, and now is embracing almost all ages
and classes. In fact, the teens are making the drugs seem like a fashion trend, in which those who do
not follow it will be excluded. Considering this fact, and relating it to the need of the human being to
feel accepted by the society or a group, helps to understand why the number of drug addicts is
increasing.

Considering the criteria cited above, I had two ideas a comic book or a videogame; but, in the attempt
of minimizing as much as possible the costs of the proposal, without compromising the effectiveness
of the same, I chose the comic book.
I Previous Solution Surely, because of the severity of the drug problem, several solutions were
extrapolated and implemented in the attempt to deal with it. However, ones were more efficient than
others, but at the same time, none of them represented a real solution for a long time project. For
instance, in the article The War On Drugs ... , written by Ewan Hoyle, which is the founder of the
Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform, there are several solutions to deal with the drug problem,
but each one of them has its constraints (303). One of them, and it was the chosen solution by the
author, included a treatment with diamorphine, which is a pharmaceutical drug that changes the
neurological system and inhibit the desires of the consumer (303). Even though it seems an extreme
measure, the article showed that it carried a high percentage of success on the sample trials. On the
other hand, such measure seems to carry a lot of constraints related to the costs. For the costs, even
Hoyle stated that this treatment was expensive (304). In his attempt, to back up it, Hoyle stated that
the government must do a revision of its policies in a way that facilitate the market for this medicine
(304). Well, the

The Tower Of Babel
a) One of God s reasons for thwarting the construction of the of the tower were that the people were
building the tower as a tribute to themselves, they were trying to be with God like. Almost as if they
were building their own Mount Olympus. It was an expression of their own greatness, as well as a
way to keep all of the people together like an exclusive club. God did not want the world to end up in
groups of seclusion. Another reason is that God probably didn t want a group of all powerful humans

c) The theme of language and communication can definitely be related to the biblical story. The Tower
of Babel is a way of explaining why we have different languages, but it also shows that language isn t
a defining trait of superiority. Power is a definite theme that can be related to both stories. The
Company wants money and money is related to power. The builders want to make a name for
themselves, meaning they want to show their power. Exploration is another theme that can be related

Reasons To Be A Nun In The Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, a woman might have several reasons to be a nun. Some of them, for example,
wanted to dedicate themselves to the God; or their families couldn t afford a daughter and sent them to
the convent; or they were not attractive enough to appeal a man and got marriage so they went to the
convent. Although we don t know the reason the prioress becoming the nun, she mustn t have gone to
the convent because of believing in god for she lacked a true religious calling. Besides, as for her
background, there are many suggestions she was from a noble family. Last but not the least, the
brooch the prioress wore had some words: Amor vincit omnia which means love conquers all .

The prioress s French indicates her education. She spoke French good and elegantly, but she had never
been to France. It seems that she was taught French in England. Without living in France, she must
have been given a good environment or a fine teacher to learn French while the convent didn t have so
enough resource. Therefore, she learned it at other place the family she belonged that could afford to
give a daughter a well education. However, having so well environment but not going to France to
learn more, the prioress shows her superficiality of limited learning.
The love of the prioress is an irony. Her love described in the prologue was not to the God but to the
little animals. She did many things with her charity and love that others believed she love animals by
heart. Nevertheless, no matter she loved animals by heart or not, her major intention was to be a
woman of empathy in other s eyes. The reason is like why she did good table manner she wanted to
earn other s esteem. In addition, she showed her compassion to mice was another irony. The God was
the highest status respected by followers, but the prioress pitied on a mouse which was at very low
status hated by people. In addition, England just went through the most dreadful period, Black Death
mice were the symbol of death at that time. It seems that she didn t know this misfortune in the world
but pretended having love of

Painted Door Women
Every character was created by the author for a purpose. As readers journey through Wharton s Tales
of Men and Ghosts short story collection, they might be inclined to overlook one of the most
important aspect: the minor characters, for they hold great significance. Amongst these minor
characters are female characters who play plot twisting roles. Through them, Wharton subtly breaches
the societal expectations of her time by inserting this concept that women too play an important role in
society. In addition, Wharton s characters refute the haunting words of Queen Victoria: Let women be
what God intended, a helpmate for a man, but with totally different duties and vocations (Trueman).

As Mary Boyne lead readers through the world of Afterward , readers heard but one clear note, the
voice of Alida Stair, speaking on the lawn at Pangbourne (Wharton 140). Her iconic words that played
a pivotal role in the narrative began and ended the story. They revealed the story. The impact her
words possess, however, escalates knowing they came from the mouth of a woman. Unlike the girl on
the bench, Alida Stair could ve been male. Wharton intended readers to remember the words of a
woman to prove they can hold as great of significance as words that came from a man. Showing that a
woman held the answer is like declaring that women are the answer that society have long sought for.
The world didn t realize till long, long afterward women s treasure like potential that have since

  • 2. Warld War II World War 2 was a gruesome war that had a terrible outcome. Millions of people were killed. Cities were destroyed. Countries were bankrupted. During this war, the US played a significant role. The US had a major strategy called Island Hopping, in which the US would take over islands in the Philippines while slowly moving towards striking distance of Japan. Another important happening in this was not necessarily a slow moving conquering, but a date. This day was D Day. A few years in through World War 2, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This caused the US to take action. The US came up with a very clever strategy to get back at Japan. They knew that the bombing of Pearl Harbor had a very heavy emotional tone on Americans so they knew they needed to bomb Japan back. However, US bombers could not make it across the Pacific Ocean. So, the US came up with an idea to defeat many islands in the Philippines while slowly creeping towards Japan. This idea was then called Operation Cartwheel . The first objective of the US in Operation Cartwheel was to take Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands of the Philippines. On August 7, 1942, the US Marines invaded the islands after naval preparatory shelling. They landed on the north beaches which were east of the Tenaru River. For three months they suffered from diseases such as: diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, and skin fungus. But they still managed to take over an airfield. At the end of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Merging Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social... The two theories I have decided to merge are Agnew s General Strain Theory and Hirschi s Social Bond Theory. I picked General Strain Theory because it does a good job at discussing some of the things that can trigger the release of a person s negative emotions which in turn may lead to deviant behavior. I also decided to write about Social Bond Theory because it describes some of the factors that keep people from committing crime. Both of the theories have strengths and weaknesses individually, but when merged they help fill in each other s gaps. (Agnew, 2011; Hirschi, 2011) +1 (888) 295 7904 The proposal of Robert Agnew s General Strain Theory in explaining criminal deviance is based on three concepts. The first concept is that people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Agnew, 2011) There are a lot of people who have lost their cell phones due to their own carelessness or it was stolen. Anyone who has lost their cell phone has experienced the first type of strain. Agnew plainly describes the strain as a result when individual s lose something good (Agnew, 2011. p. 190). The description Agnew gives comes off as being ambiguous and incomplete. Arguably, the strain of losing something good can be interpreted a certain way by someone and a completely different way by another person. A perfect example would be a drug dealer losing his cocaine. According to this theory he is more apt to commit a deviant act to get his cocaine back. Obviously the problem here is the fact that he was already committing a crime before the strain ever took place. On the other, a victim of identity theft has their entire savings wiped out. Consequently, due to their desperate need for money they become a prostitute. In this case the theory seems to hold true. The scenarios above appear to be completely different in all but two ways. The two ways in which they are similar are they both lost something important to them. The word good is not defined by what society approves or disapproves of. What s considered to be good is based on the individual s own definition. The second similarity is that their loss triggered negative emotions such as anger, depression, and frustration. In these two similarities the core concept of General ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and... 14 October 2012 American Politics Midterm Exam Question 3 The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and Voting Linkage institutions can be defined as institutions that connect citizens with the government. Examples of linkage institutions include elections, political parties, interest groups, and the media. Elections specifically are supposed to encourage public participation in the selection of governmental officials. Unfortunately, low voter turnout has proved that elections are an imperfect linkage institution. Elections depend on voters to be successful, and some factors that relate to the likelihood of voting include age, education, and race. Although some people underestimate the power of the vote, voter turnout is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even after the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment, African Americans were disenfranchised in the South by intimidation and electoral trickery, including whites only primaries, rigged literacy tests, and poll taxes (Patterson 2011, p. 180). The Freedom Riders rode through the South, enduring harassment and imprisonment to encourage other African Americans to vote. Voter turnout in African American communities is greatly encouraged. Personally, coming from an African American family, I was strongly encouraged by my parents and grandparents to vote when I was of legal age. My family instilled the importance of voting in me at a very young age. Although voter turnout among African Americans is still fairly low, in the 2008 presidential election African Americans had the second highest voter turnout, behind non Hispanic Caucasians (African Americans, n.d.). Race can influence voter turnout because with African Americans specifically, although rates are getting better, they are still not high. One factor that decreases voter turnout is the misconception that a person s vote does not matter. Alienation is a feeling of personal powerlessness that includes the feeling that the government does not care about individual people. These people believe that the government will not respond to their concerns even if they do vote. The problem is that a large portion of the population shares this attitude. Other instances authors exemplify their probing of social problems, and the limitations society holds on its residents. The novella by Ibsen and Flaubert s novel emphasize upon women that struggle with what can and cannot be done in their society. Hedda understands those circumstances which is why she says, Oh yes, Judge I was going to say, you make your bed and then you lie in it (255). It implies that she distinguishes her place in society and even though she is unhappy she just has to cope with it. Society plays a major part in marriages back in the day, by creating barriers and limits that some woman could not handle, such as Emma Bovary. In Flaubert s Madame Bovary, Emma Bovary is confined to an unhappy life as a result of the society she dwelled in. Social status was imperative during the time period; the more money one had, the higher up they in class. Throughout the novel it mentioned about Bourgeois ways because of Charles and Emma. They are put into that social class because of how much money they possess as well as expend. The state argued that the murder victim s statements relating to the defendant s cutting her throat while dying fell under the excited utterance exception rule against hearsay since they were made under the stress of the event. In the eyes of medical personnel it is an assumption that antipsychotic drugs could compensate for mental illness, which typically takes long periods of time to thoroughly diagnose, and thus there is no incentive to attempt to correct for the mental illness since there is no guarantee of recovery. The decision should be made to either label him as mentally ill, medicate him in order to make him better so that he might live a sane life or to terminate his life due to the extremities of his crime. The main goal of capital punishment is the forfeiture of the offenders participation in society by means of termination of life and that terminating a life does not require any special condition to undergo there is no conclusive need to ensure the healthy condition of an offender who is subject to termination of life. The narrative moves through several interpretive frameworks Vladek s perspective, and Artie s perspective, both of his father and of his father s story and how he s choosing to tell it. Throughout these various levels of interpretation, questions are posed in innumerable ways. Vladek s behavior when he talks about (or even uses) his experiences, Artie s perspective of his father, and the symbolic representation of the animals, are all expressions of identity that come through as the result of the individual s frame of interpretation. In the first volume, Artie ruminates on the subject of Jewish stereotypes and the ways in which his father fits into them. In one panel, he says, In some ways he s just like the racist caricature of the miserly old Jew (Maus I, Spiegelman 131). It s important to Artie to portray his father accurately, but he s understandably concerned about playing into stereotypes. Just like the animal and nationality stereotypes, the stereotypes that Vladek fits into work in two ways. Vladek is the miserly old Jew but the text shows over and over again that this same pragmatic tendency helped him survive a lot of times in the war, and so in some ways validates the practice. It s important to note though, that the tendency to save negatively affected Mala and Artie; they both carried a lot of resentment towards Vladek in the ways that he denied them a lot of basic necessities, and in a lot of ways prioritized material items and money over members of his family. So while the text shows an explanation of sorts for Vladek s behavior, it doesn t necessarily make excuses for the problems he caused with his actions later on. The engagement between cultural perceptions and lived experience continues the subversive action that is the basic underlying function of the texts. (Maus II, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Positive Causes Of The American Revolution Amid growing tension between England and her American Colonists, the British passed the Intolerable Acts, a law that created a punitive tax for the destruction of Tea in the Boston Harbor. Though the British saw the Intolerable Acts as a compromise in dealing with the vandalism, the American colonists were enraged. Their anger led to the creation of the First Continental Congress and paved the path for the conflict of the American Revolution. The American Revolution lasted from 1754 to 1788 with the commission of the intolerable acts occurring in the midst of this during 1774. Great Britain taxed the colonists after the French and Indian war. This battle marked the beginning of the Revolution. Colonists had been controlling their own government for years when the British saw fit to tax the 13 colonies. The intolerable acts only served to fuel the colonist s anger and ultimately ended in the independence of those colonies. Though the effects may have been negative for the British, the positive outcome for the Americans marked the beginning of The United States history. There was a series of events leading up to the intolerable acts that all added to the ire of the colonists. For example, governments can make inadequate and oftentimes harmful decisions including those that can cause or worsen poverty, natural disasters can cause someone to become impoverished, and childhood poverty is more common in those from rural areas. The government has a definite role in the lives of children who are affected by poverty and in some cases may be the ones who caused the poverty in the first place. Public servants tend to keep their jobs in recessions, and when poverty is widespread government s attempt to make programs to help alleviate poverty which sometimes never come to fruition, in many cases due to not restructuring the economy when things stop working, a country s leadership can actually cause poverty or worsen it dramatically. Security background and threats of terrorism Since the beginning of a 21st century, an international security environment has been proved to be more volatile, unpredictable, complex and ambiguity with their challenging effects in various ways. Thus, those challenging situations take into particular considerations when combating terrorism throughout the national security strategy. The civil war, sectarian spillovers of crises, state catastrophe in central Africa and the Middle East will likely to be continued with growing scale and concern. Most worrisome is the emergence in Iraq and Syria of the self proclaimed Islamic State known as ISIS whose brutal violence, ability to capture and hold territory, significant financial resources, and impressive strategic acumen make it a threat like any other the United States has faced in the contemporary era. The Radical Islamic terrorism as An act of terror and an act of hate is well nested in Iraq and Syria will also likely to cause more instability and extreme violence in the region, and in entire world. It draws on Schiffrin et al (2003), Foucault s and Van Dijk s concepts of critical discourse analysis and aims to reveal how Bush and Obama carefully selected emotionally charged language, expressions and gestures to create fear and panic in the world and how they projected terrorism negatively all the while advocating and justifying similar strategies and calling it anti terrorism. The Theory of Plate Tectonics is accredited to most of the creations of mountain ranges, the Centennial Drifting Theory, earthquakes, and other landforms nature has made. The idea of plate tectonics was formulated in the 1960s (Andel). Plate tectonics explains the origin of Earth s surface features ( Plate Tectonics BrainPop). Alfred Wegner was just guessing about the way plate tectonics were formed and no one believed him (Plate Tectonics). Scientists thought all hills and uneven ground was due to the Earth shrinking. Scientists later found out that plates move about 5 to 10 cm. per year. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, researchers found out that plate tectonics had influenced the composition of Earth s atmosphere and the oceans. After Wegner died, his Theory of Pangea was proven correct due to further research on plate tectonics (Kratochvil). Plate tectonics is also a prime cause of long term climate change (Andel). He also realized that many of his American friends have a copy of Miyzaki films in their living room after that. But two questions occurred. Why Japan? And why now? So he decided to take interviews to many people. He mentioned the word Otaku. He said that the term embraced by Americans. Because of the success of computer and industries around it, people who were negatively called geeks or nerds got the status now. Still there is negative image of otaku, in the US media, the word often express pleasure. It started to appear in film title or convention name. Author wanted this lead the change of stereotype of the Asian male in America, who are often drawn week and geeky. When the author asked Hideki Ono, who is a famous anime magazine s editor, if he thinks the American usage of otaku has helped produce more positive connotations in Japan, he gave interesting answer. After watching Sound and Fury, I learned the importance of the Deaf community and their culture and that cochlear implants are not always seen as a good thing. Hearing from the perspective of our guests, and seeing this decision from the eyes of audiologists/teachers of the Deaf, I see that cochlear implantation is anything but an easy decision. Non Greasy Pastes As Semisolid Dosage Form Based on United State Pharmacopeia, pastes are defined as semisolid dosage forms that contain one or more drug substances intended for topical application. (Pharmaceutical Dosage Form, 2009) Pastes are intended for application to the skin, oral cavity, or mucous membranes. Pastes are usually prepared from fats, fatty oils, petrolatum, paraffin, waxes, glycerin or water by mixing homogeneously powdered drug with the foregoing materials as bases. (General Requirements for Pharmaceutical Preparation) There are two classes of paste which are fatty pastes and non greasy pastes which is made from single phase aqueous gel. Although the preparations of pastes are similar to ointment, there are still having differences between paste and ointment. Compared to ointments and gels, pastes contain a high proportion of finely powdered medicaments. Pastes are generally composed of ointment bases that contain a high concentration (frequently 50%w/w) of dispersed drug. Hence, the viscosity of pastes is higher than that of pharmaceutical ointment. The base for pastes may be anhydrous (liquid or soft paraffin) or water soluble (glycerol or a mucilage). (Prashant, 2010) Furthermore, pastes take some advantages over the ointments. Pastes are more often used for protective action compared to ointments. This is because pastes ordinarily do not flow at body temperature so it can serve as protective coatings. Sometimes, the people who a person loves love and trust the most could tempt a person to do terrible things. Macbeth , written by William Shakespeare, is a play that recognizes that this is possible, even to people who were a good hearted person, in this case Macbeth. The character who is the most responsible for the downfall of Macbeth is Lady Macbeth because she constantly taunted and tempted Macbeth to murder King Duncan. Many people believe that Lady Macbeth was tricked by the Devil to tempt Macbeth to murder Duncan, and they then accuse of the witches of being the cause but that is not the case. Although it ... That was a major reason for Macbeth actually deciding to murder action. Also Lady Macbeth tries to make him seem like a traitor when he backs out of the plan, which is the starting point for Macbeth s downfall. William Shakespeare tries to show readers that even though Macbeth was evil as king, he is not entirely at fault for becoming filled with greed and anger. Even though people control their own actions they can be tempted to do wrong things due to peer pressure. Although some can just blame Macbeth, we need to remind ourselves that Macbeth wasn t going to kill Duncan, until Lady Macbeth persuaded him to. Mindfulness Reflection Paper I have a somewhat regular, yet sincere contemplative mindfulness practice that helps me understand why I experience life the way I do both internally and externally. I get to see my own urges, those I m not really aware of such as the urge to multi task. Practicing mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness practices I learned to become in touch with my own urges and to control them through awareness and self discipline. So, here are a few reflections for your coffee time. As you sip on your deliciously made aromatic coffee, tea or hot cocoa accept these thoughts for your reflection. Finally, at the 3rd mindfulness class I took with Daniel, I decided to do the homework he had suggested to everyone, which was to do one thing we do routinely during the day, mindfully. That is to be with the experience of it and fully giving it our undivided attention. For example, if we chose brushing our teeth, he said, to brush slowly, feel every stroke as the brush moved around the mouth, what it felt like, the taste of the tooth paste, what the mind was doing; observe everything about that experience, while also focusing on our breath. This was our mindfulness exercise, which to me didn t sound too exciting. It took a lot of self discipline to be able to stay with an activity and not wonder off in the mind. So,I never did the tooth brush exercise. Until that final day of having burnt my 967th pita bread and screamed to myself, this is so annoying. It s not acceptable anymore! The ... Both sides are able to present evidence to a jury and the jury discusses and comes up with a verdict. The factors which contributed to its success will be discussed, as well as why, and its implications, of becoming public. To begin with, it would be beneficial to define both collusive behaviour and the nature of the competition involved in the aviation industry. As the nature of the good is a seat on a plane, clearly capacity constraints are present in the form of the limited seating on aircraft, as well as the inability to in the short run increase output beyond full capacity. During the setting of price, clear communication will most likely result in a non static equilibrium. As well as this, the symmetry in terms of the market and cost structures has played a part in creating a successful cartel. Each firm produces a relatively homogenous good in terms of economy, business or first class, with a limited amount of features it can differentiate itself from its competitors. As well as this, using Figure 1, which will be discussed later on, demonstrates that the main costs to an airline are those which cannot be easily reduced or offset, most notably the cost of fuel and aircraft maintenance. Therefore both firms have near perfect knowledge of the cost structure and revenue through observing prices, and will aid in choosing a certain pricing strategy.
