Electronic Detection Systems Is High Rate Of False Alarms
As computer attacks are becoming more and more difficult to identify the need for better and more
efficient intrusion detection systems increases. The main problem with current intrusion detection
systems is high rate of false alarms. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are large scale
cooperative attacks launched from a large number of compromised hosts called Zombies, Which are a
major threat to Internet services. Therefore, keeping this problem in view here presents various
significant areas where genetic algorithm techniques seem to be a strong technique for detecting and
preventing DDoS attack. Our purpose of this work is to examine how to integrate multiple intrusion
detection sensors in order to minimize the number of incorrect alarms.so a brief introduction to the
parameters and evolution process of a GA will be provided by this process and how to implement it in
real IDS.

detection INTRODUCTION
The main problem with current intrusion detection systems is the high rate of false alarms triggered
off by attackers. Effective way of protecting the network against malicious attacks is the problem in
both area of research and the computer network managing professionals. Improved monitoring of
malicious attacks will require integration of multiple monitoring systems. In our current project we are
analyzing potential benefits of distributed multi sensor

Metaphors We Live By George Lakoff And Johnson
George Lakoff and Mark Johnson state in their article, Metaphors We Live By, that ...metaphor is
pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action (3). They are saying that
metaphors are used all the time, and not just when people talk, but metaphors are used in how people
think and act too. I agree with this statement because after reading Lakoff and Johnson, I have become
more aware of the metaphors I use in everyday life to describe everything, and I use the metaphors
more than I thought. Barbara Tomlinson backs Lakoff and Johnson s statement up by presenting
readers, in her article, Tuning, Tying, and Training Texts: Metaphors for Revision, with a select variety
of metaphors many different writers use when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One metaphor she talks about is cutting, but she goes into deeper specifications using pruning and
uses linguistic evidence to prove the metaphor by saying, David Jones (1966), having crawled out on
limbs, then goes ahead and prunes them; Penelope Farmer (1976) prunes her stories radically ...
(Tomlinson 69). She takes the metaphor of cutting (pruning), and then takes words associated with
pruning to present the readers with evidence.
Tomlinson went through papers and determined how authors thought of revision and what metaphor
they use when describing it. She then continues to talk about the metaphors and provide evidence
theses authors use for their metaphorical thinking. She gives readers a way to think about their own
revision process through the metaphors authors use.
A few of Tomlinson s metaphors for revision also fit how I think of my own revision process. Sewing
and tailoring is one that works well with how I revise my papers. While sewing, fabric swatches are
removed using a scissor to shape what is being made. Then, thread is used to hold the pieces together,
and make the final product. When revising my papers, I take out sections that do not fit, and then
smaller additions are put in to make the paper fit what it s supposed to be about. The smaller pieces
are usually parts that make the paper flow better or, hold it together, like thread does while sewing or
tailoring. Then,

Spouses Of Spouses
Spouses of officers are trying to get their voice out there, they want people to know that the officers
have a family, and that they are just trying to do their job. The article uses a little bit of subjective and
also some objective. Strengths of this article is noting what the spouses say about their significant
others, and weakness were the journalist not writing enough in his/her own words. We never know
when it will be our time to leave this world, and when you are serving the community and get into a

Theme Of The Gilded Six Bits
In The Gilded Six Bits, Zora Neale Hurston uses several different techniques to characterize Joe and
Missie May, the main couple throughout the short story. Hurston utilizes her own background to
describe Joe and Missie May and their marriage. She additionally demonstrates their character
improvement through her writing styles and techniques, which indicate responses and reactions
between Joe and Missie May to develop their relationship. Hurston supports her character
development through her written work style, her characters dialect, and encounters experiences from
her own life to depict a feeling of reality to her characters identities.
While the story is set in the south, we can relate it to how marriage becomes more difficult due to the
background they come from. One theme identified throughout the story was the institution of
marriage. In the beginning, Missie May and Joe seem to have it all in spite of the fact that they are
poor. Hurston describes their home by stating that The fence and house were whitewashed. The porch
and steps scrubbed white, this shows us they had an easy way of interacting with one another by how
white symbolizes cleanness, peaceful and purity. Things start to become a little off, when a newcomer
Otis D. Slemmons comes into town. He comes in and threatens to ruin everything between Missie
May and Joe. Joe tells Missie May Ah wants you to be de first ladies to walk in dere and have some
set down. This is a form of their own regional dialect, the way they speak says much of their character
language between one another. Joe begins to realize that Slemmons wants to encounter Missie May as
his own. Joe then starts to admire Missie May and wants her to look sexually attractive towards
Slemmons only to show her off to him. As Joe and Missie May enter the ice cream parlor, she starts to
play the role of a trophy wife. At this point, the story takes a tragic turn down when Slemmons starts
to chase after her, but only promising money in exchange for sex. Analyzing Missie May as a
character, Slemmons explicated her appearances and rated her as thirty eight and two, by this we can
encounter how Missie May exposes herself as a fine lady. She wants to have a more luxurious life and

Argumentative Essay On Donald Trump
While Liu chooses his ten main ten things to be mostly politics, I will do almost the same. The most
important person in America is always the president, so naturally, I will include Donald Trump on my
list. Secondly, along the lines of politics will be Net Neutrality. I don t have a strong opinion on it
myself, but I do believe it is essential to know the ins and outs of it due to how important the internet
is. The third topic will be pure politics. Hirsh did not include the simple word of politics, so I will add
it myself. The fourth will be Elon Musk, a tech giant. Finally is video games, which is something dear
to my heart, and also ingrained in most of society. This should be learned by any American or soon to
be American due to their importance on America s culture.
Donald Trump, America s current president. He didn t come to power easily. But that is what makes
him so important. Trump s biggest feature was that he was never politically correct, and still is not to
this day. Many people saw this as a good thing to have in a president. He wouldn t be pushed aside by
some foreign country. Trump is also different from the previous president in that he was a large
businessman, he was a billionaire. This means he s probably well versed in the political side of
businesses. However, with this, he also lacks the knowledge of being a politician. He never held an
office anywhere else. He only shares this with five other presidents. Everyone should know how
Trump came to be,

The Importance Of Technology In Modern America
American citizens today are so obsessed with being the future that they forget to live in the present.
Wendell Berry, a writer that appreciates simplicity, asserts that Modern America has put education, the
economy, and technology over religion, family bonding, happiness, and health. He disapprove the use
of electronics because he feels that it does not significantly outclass the usage of a pen and a paper.
While electronics did make life simplistic, Berry is correct in disapprove technology in that it alters
one s priorities, causes us to lose our abilities to concentrate, and causes citizens to miss out on the
real world around them because it makes humans unable to fully live their life independently. To
begin, The use of electronics causes one to change their priorities. In the passage of the onion, The
Onion: Police: iPhone Left In Hot Car For Three Hours, a writer copy a news report of a baby left in a
hot car for 3 hours but replay the baby with an Iphone. Police had broken into the car to in order to
save its life from the extreme heat of the car and gave the abandoned iphone new widgets for
surviving such harsh conditions(1). The onion s symbolism of the phone as a baby showed how deeply
attached living souls are to their technology and how it affects their priorities, which they treat their
phones as if it is their own baby. The Town assemblywoman, Janet Nuetreer , went as to claim that

Arranged Marriage Vs Love Marriage
The debate amongst love marriage and arranged marriage will never stop. That is not the goal.
Everyone goes about marriage a different way. Having the choice between an arranged marriage and a
love marriage is helpful for many people. There are many more advantages to an arranged marriage
than a love marriage. In the past, arranged marriages were the most popular, but modern times have
shifted the view to more love marriages despite the disadvantages accompanying it. Family is so
important. An arranged marriage is accepted by the bride and groom as they believe their elders are
able to make the best decision when it comes to who the marry. An arranged marriage focuses on
family union. This establishes trust amongst family members and automatically the new addition to
the family has immense approval, something a love marriage may not have. For example, say a
woman goes out and marries a man. She shows him to the family and they disapprove of him. They
say he is not right for her. This upsets the daughter and the husband, and creates a family divide. This
creates a situation where the woman must choose between two things she loves. This could all be
avoided by arranged marriage. Arranged marriages presuppose that two people are perfectly matched
because they belong to the same culture, share the same religious upbringing, speak the same
language, and raised in more or less the same socio economic class. These identical backgrounds
make it easier for the couple to communicate with each other and understand where each is coming
from. Decisions in the upbringing of future children and their education leave little room for
disparities in their thinking because of this likeness. The preapproval of the spouse solves a plethora of
unnecessary issues. Divorce is so common in America. It has gotten to a point that staying together for
life and honoring your vows is rare. This causes severe emotional trauma and is such a hassle. The
actual statistics for divorce in a love marriage in America is 45%. This is saying almost half of love
marriages fail. When you look over to the statistics of arranged marriage in India there is an enormous
difference. The percentage of arranged

Two tests were made: analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scott Knott multiple comparison test.
ANOVA was made with Microsoft Excel® software. Scott Knott was conducted with Sisvar®
software to compare means (treatments statistically different). Both tests were made with a 95%
confidence limit.
2.5.3 Air permeability
Air permeability of the mortars was evaluated according to Thenoz method (Pereira and Camarini,
2011). Cylindrical specimens (50 mm diameter and 100 mm height) were prepared and cured at room
temperature for 28 days (average temperature of 25 °C ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 60%). Before
testing, the specimens were cut into three parts and the central part (50 mm height) was used in the
test. The slices were oven dried at 50 °C ± 2 °C for 48 h and after cooling they had their lateral
surfaces sealed to guarantee the flow was uniaxial and perpendicular to the cross sectional area. The
test was made in a varying charge apparatus. The average values of three specimens of each mortar
composition were reported. Air permeability was calculated by the Equation 1, which is based on
Darcy s law (Camarini et al., 2008).
k = (μ/ρ.g).(s/S).ln(h0/h1).1/t Equation 1
Where: k = air permeability coefficient (m²); μ = air viscosity at the test temperature (Pa.s); ρ =
density of water (kg/m³); g = specific gravity (m/s²); S = cross sectional area of the sample (m²); s =

Foresnic Scientists Investigate Crimes by Collecing...
Forensic scientists investigate crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence. They specialize
in DNA analysis or firearm examination. By performing tests on weapons or on substances like fiber,
glass, hair, tissue, and body fluids forensic scientist determine the importance of the substance for a
trial. Forensic scientists prepare reports to document their findings and the laboratory techniques they
used, to give to investigators. When criminal cases come to trial, forensic scientist will give a
testimony as an expert witness on laboratory findings collected at the crime scene. Communication
between other scientists is a key part in being a successful forensic scientist. For instance, they may
consult a medical expert about the exact time and cause of a death, or another scientist who specializes
in DNA typing to match a DNA type to a suspect. Some scientist might be exposed to hazardous
chemicals, or toxic materials. But often are exposed to human body fluids and firearms. These
working conditions pose little risk only if safety procedures are followed correctly (Science Buddies,
n.d.). Forensic scientist work outside in all types or weather, but spend a majority of their time in
laboratories and offices. They work in groups with specialists and other law enforcement, but
specialist work only in laboratories. Scientist working in laboratories usually works a standard
workweek, although they may be on call outside of normal business hours if needed to work

Analysis of the Keurig Website
The Keurig website is a site that mainly focuses to promote their brewer products and sell them to
consumers. They also have many different products to accompany their brewing systems that they
have to offer. This website is indeed helpful and professional since it clearly promotes the product and
allows for easy navigation. It not only lets you shop for the product but also has a section dedicated to
customer service where the audience can view videos about their products. The navigation is fairly
easy to follow and the design makes it easy to read and manipulate. In order to prove that this website
is helpful and professional I will be analyzing the design, content, usefulness, and how it s organized.
When you first go to the home page it has a well developed and effective design. The colors
complement each other and the white text contrasts nicely with the maroon, black, and mustard,
making it easy to read and user friendly. The main navigation menu is at the top right after their logo
and company name. When you go the store option they have their three main brewing systems and the
names of them along with visuals of each system and products that you can choose for each system. If
you already know what brewing system you are looking for you can also just go to the brewing system

Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon
Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others
characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally
gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them
down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross, both
authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a better
understanding of their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While among
those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly gain a better
understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story , Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair
Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted by his wife and
her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they should stay in the dust
ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an understanding that, She looked forward
to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to make the dust and poverty less real. He understood
suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached
Paul, and how he is able to bypass his wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates
this same idea is The Father by Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool
of himself and his son without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that
his, boy was sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John
Purcell) was ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his
knee and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the
influences of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has
created and is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. The
short stories The Father by Hugh Garner and Lamp At Noon by Sinclair Ross portray how one person
can not only be influenced by

There is evidence of how humans were creative before civilization, from the paintings, objects, tools,

agricultural revolution, which became a very important time for humans all over the world. Farmers

Dr. Strangelove And The Cold War
The Cold War was a period of several decades of tension and the threat of nuclear conflict between the
two remaining superpowers that emerged from WWII, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The 1964 film
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, directed by Stanley
Kubrick, depicts the overlying themes of the Cold War in a comedic fashion. This film s full
embodiment of the Cold War is seen through its representation of the time period, and the sheer
competitiveness between the United States and Russia. Additionally, due to many of Kubrick s movie
decisions, the film has helped society acknowledge and understand the pure absurdity that the topic of
nuclear destruction holds. In Dr. Strangelove, General Jack D. ... Show more content on

General alone goes rogue and sends the missiles toward Russia.
The film delves into some of the difficult options leaders have to choose from in cases involving
nuclear weapons. Nuclear conflicts are very complex, with many scenarios that could potentially
occur. After General Ripper has directed his plane to bomb the enemy, he describes his thought
process to one of his officers, ...when [the president s advisors] realize there is no possibility in
recalling the wing there will be only one course of action: open, total commitment . Later, General
Buck Turgidson, one of the President s top advisors, echoes this exact idea in the war room and
proposes to the U.S. President a full commitment. This was one possible solution that could have
neutralized all of Russia in one wave of nuclear missiles; however, this strategy is frowned upon and
dismissed by the President as it would reflect poorly on the U.S. diplomatic reputation in the long run.
An aspect of the Cold War that Kubrick focuses on is the blatant lack of trust between the conflicting
nations. In a scene where a Russian ambassador is being brought into the war room, General
Turgidson is disturbed by having all of the U.S. plans open in front of the enemy. He exclaims to the
U.S. President, Sir, you can t let him in here. He ll see everything. He ll see the big board! Suddenly,

Crisis Intervention Chapter 1 Summary
Chapter 1 discussed the concepts, theories, strategies, and skills needed for crisis intervention. It was
interesting to read about how government agencies like FEMA and the Red Cross have been around
for years; however they really do not focus on intervention from a mental health perspective. The
chapter briefly touched on the Cocoanut Grove fire. After research I learned that it is the deadliest
known night club fire in the world, killing 492 people, and sending 166 to hospitals. I can understand
how it is the benchmark for crisis intervention. How mental health was viewed before the Community
Mental Health Centers Act of 1963 is unbearable. It altered the delivery of mental health services and
made the industry what it is today. One statement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important thing that I took away from this chapter is the overarching default task of ensuring
safety, safety for the client as well as others and workers. This chapter did a good job on illustrating
equilibrium; however I appreciated it stating that not all individuals had equilibrium before the crisis.
This type of intervention is not too different from counseling because not all clients are ideal or
perfect. This chapter also stressed the importance of assessment. From onset to resolution of the crisis,
assessment is a continuous process. I learned that just because crisis appears on the surface to have
been resolved, it should not be assumed that assessment is no longer

Rock And Roll Of The 1960 S
Dr. Roessner
Reading Rock Roll
11/21/16
Pet Sounds vs. SGT Pepper Rock and Roll in the 1960 s was a very memorable decade. Rock and roll
music went through a very dramatic transformation; A few bands went through some changes of their
own to keep selling albums. Two very popular bands that went through a transformation was the
Beach Boys and the Beatles. I bring up these two well known bands because I believe that they played
a key role in the transformation of rock and roll. Rock and roll would not be the same today without
these two remarkable bands. Between the Beach Boys and the Beatles, I guess someone could say that
there was a little bit of friction. This was because when the Beach Boys debuted in 1961 they were
known as Americas favorite band, until The Beatles came to the states in 1964. The Beatles brought
something new with them when they crossed the Atlantic Ocean from England, and this was just the
beginning of something new. This friction between the Beach Boys and The Beatles is what started a
beautiful transformation of music in the rock and roll world, and it all started with the albums Pet
Sounds and SGT Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Some background on these two bands and where
they came from. In 1961 The Beach Boys were born. The band was made up of five men Brian

Hermia In A Midsummer s Night Dream
Although some may argue that Puck is the most important character of Shakespeare s A Midsummer s
Night Dream, it is evident based on the events of the play that Hermia should be given that title. First,
although she was oppressed by her father and treated as if she were his property, she rose above the
persecution and took matters into her own hands. In addition, her actions represent and support the
theme of fighting for what you want, even if the course of true love never did run smooth (I.i.134).
Finally, like many protagonists from literature, she has bold and complex personality, but is still a
relatable character for many readers. The first reason that Hermia should be considered the main
character of A Midsummer s Night Dream is because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the worst. Although she could have given up and decided it wasn t worth trying to force him to love
her again instead of Helena, she knew that he was the one for her and was willing to fight for him. For
instance, when Helena seemed to have stolen both men from Helena, even though they have been
friends for years, she is willing to do whatever it takes to get him back. She states, How low am I? I
am not yet so low/But that my nails can reach unto thine eyes (III.ii.305 306). This shows that she
would be even go as far as hurting her best friend to get her lover back, which relates back to the
quote of the course of true love never did run smooth (I.i.134). In a somewhat predictable conclusion,
Puck removes the potion from Lysander and everything goes back to normal. Because she showed her

What Company Got So Big That Even Weird Al Yankovic
What Company got so big that even Weird Al Yankovic decided to create Parody to the Backstreet

eBay. Weird Al Yankovic describes in the eBay song what he bought on the famous website. EBay is a
website that you can sell or buy literally anything. Weird Al says that he bought a used pink bathrobe,
a rare mint snow globe, a Smurf TV tray. He then states that his house is filled with this crap that
people sell on eBay (Yankovic, 2016). Weird Al really knows how to shop. E Bay was founded in

Today, however, eBay is one of the world s most venerable online companies, not to mention one of
the most endlessly emulated and discussed companies in the world (Hsiao, 2016). In an Article written

want at prices better than you can find in traditional brick and mortar or even online stores. Though
there are lots of rotten deals on eBay, too, the careful consumer can always come out ahead. He then
says, eBay is a place to sell meaning, whether you are a Bix box retailer or just an average Joe (or

about the price. E Bays global reach can even move unusual items that are not in demand in your

Literary Analysis Of Gloria Anzaldua s Borderlands
There are many different styles of writing that authors use to achieve a certain affect. For example,
how a writer chooses words, languages and structures certain sentences and or paragraphs. An author s
different strategies influence the audience by giving them or taking away a certain understanding that
the author is trying to achieve. Gloria Anzaldua in Borderlands , explains a large portion of
geographical history and of her own history through just one chapter. She wants the readers to

This Blessed House is a story that focuses on two distinct characters that have a different perception

focusing on the characterization of both characters Sanjeev and Twinkle the audience gets an
understanding on the different values that Hindus and Americans share and also how religions can

other people think about him Twinkle I can t have people I work with see this statue in my lawn

things that Twinkle does. For example she sometimes spat a little when she spoke, or left her
undergarments after removing them at night at the foot of their bed rather than depositing them in the
laundry hamper (Lahiri 142). It seems that Sanjeev becomes jealous of the way people are reacting to
her and not him; she had everyone s attention, your wife s wow (Lahiri 153).
Sanjeev has never once been in love and while thinking about Twinkle he did not know if he loved her

Interdisciplinary Study Essay
An interdisciplinary study is a degree plan that allows for students to incorporate different field of
studies to construct an academic field they are interested in. Throughout these studies, students are to
research in understanding the knowledge of complex problems within their field of studies. Many
people outside of these studies conceive that interdisciplinary is not beneficial over a single discipline.
In my beliefs, interdisciplinary studies can benefit in how different fields and different approaches can
intervene together. When two different fields are combined they can enhance your knowledge by
using your skills in; different field approaches, hiring, and give a broader understanding of the full

lung specialists that will come together to help conclude what solution there is depending on what

In conclusion, my belief toward interdisciplinary studies has grown. After reading the articles,

to 81.20%. This signify that the company is doing a good job in managing their investment that is
entrusted to company s management by the shareholders and doing in a more efficient way in using

Power And Politics Organization Theory
Power and Politics Organization Theory Power and politics have always been around but seldom
openly discussed. Power is learned at an early age through family and schools. Ordinary people such
as scholars hesitate to talk about power. It is often equated with force brutality, unethical behavior,
manipulation, connivance, and subjugation. Power and Politics organization theory was derived from
the modern structural organization in the 1970 s to its present today. In the modern structural,
organizational economics, and systems/environment theories of organization, organizations are
assumed to be rational institutions with its primary purpose is to accomplish established goals. People
in formal authority set goals. The question is how best is it to design and manage organizations in
achieving its purpose effectively and efficiently? Politics plays an increasing role as individuals merge
into the work force. Power, politics and influence are essential and permanent fact of organizational
life (Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). Jeffery Pfeffer Understanding the Role of Power in Decision Making
Pfeffer explores the advantages and limitations of power. Pfeffer states that if power is a force, a store
of potential influence through which events can be affected, politics involves those activities or
behaviors through which power is developed and used in organizational settings. Power is a property
of the system at rest; politics is the study of power in action (Shafritz, Ott,

Building The Economic Case For The Preservation Of Open Space
TITLE
Building the economic case for the preservation of open space: An analysis of the limitations and
advantages to utilizing the Benefit Transfer Method toward natural capital and ecosystem valuation.
AUDIENCE
My primary audience includes local, regional and state urban planners and policy makers who are
considering Benefit Transfer Methodology (BTM) as a tool to preserve open space and ecosystem
services through policymaking and/or political influence. Additionally, environmental organizations
and land stewards in California could find value in the conclusions of this report as they deliberate
which planning resources to use toward progressing their respective agendas.
Notably, the findings drawn from this report are not exclusive to California and can be helpful to
different areas around the United States as they approach land use decisions unique to their
jurisdiction. Finally, independent groups who may find this research useful include the
environmentally conscious subset of California s population and certain businesses concerned with the
consumption and sustainability of California s natural resources and the tools available to meet this
issue.
BACKGROUND
What is Benefit Transfer Methodology (BTM)?
Benefit Transfer Methodology is a valuation tool that estimates the economic value of ecosystem
services provided by the natural capital within a study site by applying, and adjusting as needed,
original values from a previous study of similar scale . For

Examples Of Peeking Order Theory
Peeking Order Theory
Based on the finance dictionary, a peeking order theory means an argument that external financial
financing transactions, especially those related to poor selection of issues, create a dynamic
environment where firms have a priority, or borrow a financial source, when all others are the same.
Internally generated funds are the most popular funds, followed by new debt, and debt equity grants.
Finally, new equity is the least important source. Order theory assumes that there is no target capital
structure. Due to the weak selection, the firm chose internal for external finance. When external
funding is needed, firms prefer debt to equity as information related to debt issues is low cost. This
theory emphasizes that businesses must comply with hierarchy and internal funding sources if
available, and debts are preferred over equity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The static trading theory and pecking order theory are two financial principles that help companies
choose their capital structure. Both play the same role in the decision making process depending on
the type of capital structure the company wishes to achieve. However, empirically the pecking order
theory is most widely used in determining the company s capital structure.
Static trading theory is a theory of finance based on the work of economists of Modigliani and Miller.
With the theory of static trading, and since corporate debt repayment is a deductible tax and there is
less risk involved in taking debt on equity, debt financing is initially cheaper than equity financing.
This means that companies can reduce the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) through capital
structure with debt on equity. However, increasing the amount of debt also increases the risk to the
company, somewhat offsets the WACC decline. Thus, static trading theory identifies a mix of debt and
equity where the WACC decline offsets the increased financial risk to the

The Journey as Depicted in My Place by Sally Morgan, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, The

The inner journey is a concept that has always been debated, and so has its meaning. The word inner
has the alternative meaning of personal. Moreover, the word journey has an alternative meaning of
movement. So, the concept of the inner journey, customarily, has the meaning of a personal
movement. Inner journeys have often been described as the metaphor behind a physical journey. The
statement Journey is the reward and the idea of a personal movement are depicted in the texts, My

It must be noted that inner journeys are plagued with choices, and this is a truth and reality that no one
can escape. As Robert Frost says in The Road Not Taken , Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.
In Sally s quest for information, she met a lady called Elsie who gave her a great depth and insight
into her Grandmother and the past. In Sally s mind, her journey was definitely rewarded and this made
her feel full inside . Sally s mother, Gladys, had also found an new sense of fulfillment which
completed her as a whole, because she was previously only half a person . For Sally, it was her
determination and stubborn nature which meant that she was rewarded, because in her heart she
realized that unless the family went on such an epic journey we never would have known our place .
Sally said What had begun as a tentative search for knowledge had grown into a spiritual and
emotional pilgrimage . This journey of self discovery, enlightenment and acceptance, were all key
discerning factors in how, for Sally, the journey was a rewarding experience.
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, is another text which represents how the journey, alone, can be
a rewarding experience. The Road Not Taken, is the poem about a man who is exploring the choices
that he once had, as he made his journey through lfe. It is the

Charles Eisenstein Disruption
During the tenth week of my HUMI 1 class, I was deeply intrigued with the topic of disruption
because it was something that I always viewed as a negative but soon found out that it can also be
seen and used as a benefit. Charles Eisenstein discusses how disruption can be seen as a form of
raising awareness towards something. You get the idea that we as people, are sometimes too far in the
moment to realize what is happening around us as we are indulged in our own activities. When that
occurs, disruption comes into play allowing for us to be conscious of our surroundings and the
importance of something. Because disruption is something that I have experience with, I wanted to

Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm
The Truman Show and Animal Farm Essay
What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are
important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions
radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s novel Animal
Farm, we see that once the animals gain power over the farm they have the good life and live in a
perfect society. In the Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see that Truman doesn t know that
Christof is controlling his life and he is always working towards living what he thinks is the good life.
The good life is determined by having everything perfect. This then affects what the perfect society
would look like because if everyone didn t have very much and wasn t treated equally the world
would be a horrible place. People in power try to create perfect societies so people can live the good
life.
Power and control is the ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.
In The Truman Show, Peter Weir demonstrates that power is corrupt and is a recipe for disaster. For
example Christof stages a storm that supposedly kills Truman s father, making Truman afraid of water
to stop him from leaving Seahaven Island. Mostly brilliant! Truman s been terrified of the water ever
since. Likewise, in Animal Farm, George Orwell exemplifies that anyone can have power and when
they have power they will use it to hurt others. For instance when Snowball suggests the windmill,
Napoleon gets the dogs to chase Snowball away. In Snowball s absence, Napoleon declares himself
the leader. Napoleon is always right. (Page 48) From then on the Pigs would run the farm. They took
the ability to eat whatever and not have any rules away from the other animals. Both Weir and Orwell
suggest that with power and control someone can overpower everyone else.
The ability for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they have
to choose their own future. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir suggests that without freedom one cannot
be truly happy. Despite having everything, Truman s life in Seahaven is never truly complete. When
Truman sits on the beach in

U.s. Imposes Tariffs On Chinese Solar Panels
This article discusses how the U.S. imposes tariffs on Chinese solar panels due to the fact that China
was dumping solar panels to the U.S market, it also considers the possible impact of these changes and
attempts to assess the relative merits/drawbacks of the policy. Dumping is the selling of goods and
services on foreign markets below their cost of production[ http://study.com/academy/lesson/dumping
in economics definition effects.html]. A tariff is defined as taxation on imported goods.
Dumping of Chinese solar panels on the U.S market
Chinese companies were selling products below the cost of manufacture also benefiting from unfair
subsidies from their government this results the domestic quantity supply of solar panels to decrease
as the price of domestic supplied solar panels is higher than ones imported from China. But U.S
consumers are paying a lower price when solar panels are exported to the U.S from China and
consumers get more variety of choices when buying. Even if America s solar market contained no
trade barriers before this, the domestic quantity supplied would still decrease from Q2 to Q1 because
most domestic solar companies cannot compete with the subsidized Chinese producers. Inexpensive
Chinese solar products pushed many American manufacturers out of business , causing structural
unemployment in America and this will be difficult for the U.S government to deal with because this
will require retraining or other initiatives which can sometimes be

The Hero In The Giver By Lois Lowry s The Giver
In her 1994 Newberry Acceptance Speech, author Lois Lowry recalls a memory of a girl in her college
dormitory. She describes the young woman saying She s a smart girl, a good student, a pleasant
enough person, but she is different, somehow alien, (Lowry, Newbery Acceptance Speech ). One can
see how Lowry had inspiration for the character Jonas in her novel, The Giver. When writing, The
Giver Lowry creates a dystopian society where the government has taken away the population s ability
to remember the past, see color, or have feelings. In the novel, Lois Lowry presents the protagonist
and hero, Jonas. Jonas gets chosen to be the Receiver of Memory and his whole life changes. The
current Receiver, an old man Jonas calls The Giver shows Jonas memories from the past that contain
aspects ranging from history to feelings. He becomes aware of the government s actions in hiding all
the qualities and rebels against them in the end, leaving the city behind. Jonas is a twelve year old hero
who is different, yet intelligent, and more selfless than the majority of the population in the novel.
Jonas s heroic personality can be analyzed through his vision, his reactions when receiving memories,
and when he risks his life.
Lowry first shows Jonas s heroism through how different he is from to the rest of the population
through his vision. Whether it is through his eyes physically or the portrayal of color, Lowry
emphasizes the importance of Jonas s vision. At the beginning of the novel, Lowry describes Jonas s
eyes differently than the rest of the population. She says Almost every citizen in the community had
dark eyes. His parents did, and Lily did, and so did all of his group members and friends. But there
were a few exceptions: Jonas himself, and a female Five who he had noticed had the different, lighter
eyes. (Lowry, The Giver 20). The description of Jonas s eyes indicates that there is something special
about him and different than the rest of the population because his eyes are pale while the majority of
others are dark.
Jonas can see more deeply into objects than everyone else too again, showing how different and
intelligent he is from to the rest of society. Lowry writes about Jonas s first experience with color

  • 2. Electronic Detection Systems Is High Rate Of False Alarms As computer attacks are becoming more and more difficult to identify the need for better and more efficient intrusion detection systems increases. The main problem with current intrusion detection systems is high rate of false alarms. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are large scale cooperative attacks launched from a large number of compromised hosts called Zombies, Which are a major threat to Internet services. Therefore, keeping this problem in view here presents various significant areas where genetic algorithm techniques seem to be a strong technique for detecting and preventing DDoS attack. Our purpose of this work is to examine how to integrate multiple intrusion detection sensors in order to minimize the number of incorrect alarms.so a brief introduction to the parameters and evolution process of a GA will be provided by this process and how to implement it in real IDS. Keywords: Distributed Denial of Service attack, Genetic Algorithm, Zombies, intruders ,intrusion detection INTRODUCTION The main problem with current intrusion detection systems is the high rate of false alarms triggered off by attackers. Effective way of protecting the network against malicious attacks is the problem in both area of research and the computer network managing professionals. • 3. Metaphors We Live By George Lakoff And Johnson George Lakoff and Mark Johnson state in their article, Metaphors We Live By, that ...metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action (3). They are saying that metaphors are used all the time, and not just when people talk, but metaphors are used in how people think and act too. I agree with this statement because after reading Lakoff and Johnson, I have become more aware of the metaphors I use in everyday life to describe everything, and I use the metaphors more than I thought. Barbara Tomlinson backs Lakoff and Johnson s statement up by presenting readers, in her article, Tuning, Tying, and Training Texts: Metaphors for Revision, with a select variety of metaphors many different writers use when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One metaphor she talks about is cutting, but she goes into deeper specifications using pruning and uses linguistic evidence to prove the metaphor by saying, David Jones (1966), having crawled out on limbs, then goes ahead and prunes them; Penelope Farmer (1976) prunes her stories radically ... (Tomlinson 69). She takes the metaphor of cutting (pruning), and then takes words associated with pruning to present the readers with evidence. Tomlinson went through papers and determined how authors thought of revision and what metaphor they use when describing it. She then continues to talk about the metaphors and provide evidence theses authors use for their metaphorical thinking. She gives readers a way to think about their own revision process through the metaphors authors use. A few of Tomlinson s metaphors for revision also fit how I think of my own revision process. Sewing and tailoring is one that works well with how I revise my papers. While sewing, fabric swatches are removed using a scissor to shape what is being made. Then, thread is used to hold the pieces together, and make the final product. When revising my papers, I take out sections that do not fit, and then smaller additions are put in to make the paper fit what it s supposed to be about. The smaller pieces are usually parts that make the paper flow better or, hold it together, like thread does while sewing or tailoring. Then, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Theme Of The Gilded Six Bits In The Gilded Six Bits, Zora Neale Hurston uses several different techniques to characterize Joe and Missie May, the main couple throughout the short story. Hurston utilizes her own background to describe Joe and Missie May and their marriage. She additionally demonstrates their character improvement through her writing styles and techniques, which indicate responses and reactions between Joe and Missie May to develop their relationship. Hurston supports her character development through her written work style, her characters dialect, and encounters experiences from her own life to depict a feeling of reality to her characters identities. While the story is set in the south, we can relate it to how marriage becomes more difficult due to the background they come from. One theme identified throughout the story was the institution of marriage. In the beginning, Missie May and Joe seem to have it all in spite of the fact that they are poor. Hurston describes their home by stating that The fence and house were whitewashed. The porch and steps scrubbed white, this shows us they had an easy way of interacting with one another by how white symbolizes cleanness, peaceful and purity. Things start to become a little off, when a newcomer Otis D. Slemmons comes into town. He comes in and threatens to ruin everything between Missie May and Joe. Joe tells Missie May Ah wants you to be de first ladies to walk in dere and have some set down. This is a form of their own regional dialect, the way they speak says much of their character language between one another. Joe begins to realize that Slemmons wants to encounter Missie May as his own. Joe then starts to admire Missie May and wants her to look sexually attractive towards Slemmons only to show her off to him. As Joe and Missie May enter the ice cream parlor, she starts to play the role of a trophy wife. At this point, the story takes a tragic turn down when Slemmons starts to chase after her, but only promising money in exchange for sex. Analyzing Missie May as a character, Slemmons explicated her appearances and rated her as thirty eight and two, by this we can encounter how Missie May exposes herself as a fine lady. She wants to have a more luxurious life and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Argumentative Essay On Donald Trump While Liu chooses his ten main ten things to be mostly politics, I will do almost the same. The most important person in America is always the president, so naturally, I will include Donald Trump on my list. Secondly, along the lines of politics will be Net Neutrality. I don t have a strong opinion on it myself, but I do believe it is essential to know the ins and outs of it due to how important the internet is. The third topic will be pure politics. Hirsh did not include the simple word of politics, so I will add it myself. The fourth will be Elon Musk, a tech giant. Finally is video games, which is something dear to my heart, and also ingrained in most of society. This should be learned by any American or soon to be American due to their importance on America s culture. Donald Trump, America s current president. He didn t come to power easily. But that is what makes him so important. Trump s biggest feature was that he was never politically correct, and still is not to this day. Many people saw this as a good thing to have in a president. He wouldn t be pushed aside by some foreign country. Trump is also different from the previous president in that he was a large businessman, he was a billionaire. This means he s probably well versed in the political side of businesses. However, with this, he also lacks the knowledge of being a politician. He never held an office anywhere else. He only shares this with five other presidents. Everyone should know how Trump came to be, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Importance Of Technology In Modern America American citizens today are so obsessed with being the future that they forget to live in the present. Wendell Berry, a writer that appreciates simplicity, asserts that Modern America has put education, the economy, and technology over religion, family bonding, happiness, and health. He disapprove the use of electronics because he feels that it does not significantly outclass the usage of a pen and a paper. While electronics did make life simplistic, Berry is correct in disapprove technology in that it alters one s priorities, causes us to lose our abilities to concentrate, and causes citizens to miss out on the real world around them because it makes humans unable to fully live their life independently. To begin, The use of electronics causes one to change their priorities. In the passage of the onion, The Onion: Police: iPhone Left In Hot Car For Three Hours, a writer copy a news report of a baby left in a hot car for 3 hours but replay the baby with an Iphone. Police had broken into the car to in order to save its life from the extreme heat of the car and gave the abandoned iphone new widgets for surviving such harsh conditions(1). The onion s symbolism of the phone as a baby showed how deeply attached living souls are to their technology and how it affects their priorities, which they treat their phones as if it is their own baby. • 8. Arranged Marriage Vs Love Marriage The debate amongst love marriage and arranged marriage will never stop. That is not the goal. Everyone goes about marriage a different way. Having the choice between an arranged marriage and a love marriage is helpful for many people. There are many more advantages to an arranged marriage than a love marriage. In the past, arranged marriages were the most popular, but modern times have shifted the view to more love marriages despite the disadvantages accompanying it. Family is so important. An arranged marriage is accepted by the bride and groom as they believe their elders are able to make the best decision when it comes to who the marry. An arranged marriage focuses on family union. This establishes trust amongst family members and automatically the new addition to the family has immense approval, something a love marriage may not have. For example, say a woman goes out and marries a man. She shows him to the family and they disapprove of him. They say he is not right for her. This upsets the daughter and the husband, and creates a family divide. This creates a situation where the woman must choose between two things she loves. This could all be avoided by arranged marriage. Arranged marriages presuppose that two people are perfectly matched because they belong to the same culture, share the same religious upbringing, speak the same language, and raised in more or less the same socio economic class. These identical backgrounds make it easier for the couple to communicate with each other and understand where each is coming from. Decisions in the upbringing of future children and their education leave little room for disparities in their thinking because of this likeness. The preapproval of the spouse solves a plethora of unnecessary issues. Divorce is so common in America. It has gotten to a point that staying together for life and honoring your vows is rare. This causes severe emotional trauma and is such a hassle. The actual statistics for divorce in a love marriage in America is 45%. This is saying almost half of love marriages fail. When you look over to the statistics of arranged marriage in India there is an enormous difference. The percentage of arranged ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both tests were made with a 95% confidence limit. 2.5.3 Air permeability Air permeability of the mortars was evaluated according to Thenoz method (Pereira and Camarini, 2011). Cylindrical specimens (50 mm diameter and 100 mm height) were prepared and cured at room temperature for 28 days (average temperature of 25 °C ± 2 °C and relative humidity of 60%). Before testing, the specimens were cut into three parts and the central part (50 mm height) was used in the test. The slices were oven dried at 50 °C ± 2 °C for 48 h and after cooling they had their lateral surfaces sealed to guarantee the flow was uniaxial and perpendicular to the cross sectional area. The test was made in a varying charge apparatus. The average values of three specimens of each mortar composition were reported. Air permeability was calculated by the Equation 1, which is based on Darcy s law (Camarini et al., 2008). k = (μ/ρ.g).(s/S).ln(h0/h1).1/t Equation 1 Where: k = air permeability coefficient (m²); μ = air viscosity at the test temperature (Pa.s); ρ = density of water (kg/m³); g = specific gravity (m/s²); S = cross sectional area of the sample (m²); s = cross sectional area of capillary tube (m²); h0 = start water level (m); h1 = ... • 13. Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross, both authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a better understanding of their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While among those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly gain a better understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story , Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted by his wife and her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they should stay in the dust ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an understanding that, She looked forward to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to make the dust and poverty less real. He understood suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached Paul, and how he is able to bypass his wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates this same idea is The Father by Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool of himself and his son without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that his, boy was sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John Purcell) was ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his knee and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the influences of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has created and is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. Dr. Strangelove And The Cold War The Cold War was a period of several decades of tension and the threat of nuclear conflict between the two remaining superpowers that emerged from WWII, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The 1964 film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, directed by Stanley Kubrick, depicts the overlying themes of the Cold War in a comedic fashion. This film s full embodiment of the Cold War is seen through its representation of the time period, and the sheer competitiveness between the United States and Russia. Additionally, due to many of Kubrick s movie decisions, the film has helped society acknowledge and understand the pure absurdity that the topic of nuclear destruction holds. The film delves into some of the difficult options leaders have to choose from in cases involving nuclear weapons. Nuclear conflicts are very complex, with many scenarios that could potentially occur. After General Ripper has directed his plane to bomb the enemy, he describes his thought process to one of his officers, ...when [the president s advisors] realize there is no possibility in recalling the wing there will be only one course of action: open, total commitment . Later, General Buck Turgidson, one of the President s top advisors, echoes this exact idea in the war room and proposes to the U.S. President a full commitment. This was one possible solution that could have neutralized all of Russia in one wave of nuclear missiles; however, this strategy is frowned upon and dismissed by the President as it would reflect poorly on the U.S. diplomatic reputation in the long run. An aspect of the Cold War that Kubrick focuses on is the blatant lack of trust between the conflicting nations. In a scene where a Russian ambassador is being brought into the war room, General Turgidson is disturbed by having all of the U.S. plans open in front of the enemy. Rock and roll music went through a very dramatic transformation; A few bands went through some changes of their own to keep selling albums. Two very popular bands that went through a transformation was the Beach Boys and the Beatles. I bring up these two well known bands because I believe that they played a key role in the transformation of rock and roll. Rock and roll would not be the same today without these two remarkable bands. Between the Beach Boys and the Beatles, I guess someone could say that there was a little bit of friction. This was because when the Beach Boys debuted in 1961 they were known as Americas favorite band, until The Beatles came to the states in 1964. The Beatles brought something new with them when they crossed the Atlantic Ocean from England, and this was just the beginning of something new. This friction between the Beach Boys and The Beatles is what started a beautiful transformation of music in the rock and roll world, and it all started with the albums Pet Sounds and SGT Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Some background on these two bands and where they came from. In 1961 The Beach Boys were born. The band was made up of five men Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and Al Jardine. In addition, her actions represent and support the theme of fighting for what you want, even if the course of true love never did run smooth (I.i.134). Power is learned at an early age through family and schools. Ordinary people such as scholars hesitate to talk about power. It is often equated with force brutality, unethical behavior, manipulation, connivance, and subjugation. Power and Politics organization theory was derived from the modern structural organization in the 1970 s to its present today. In the modern structural, organizational economics, and systems/environment theories of organization, organizations are assumed to be rational institutions with its primary purpose is to accomplish established goals. People in formal authority set goals. The question is how best is it to design and manage organizations in achieving its purpose effectively and efficiently? Politics plays an increasing role as individuals merge into the work force. Power, politics and influence are essential and permanent fact of organizational life (Shafritz, Ott, Jang, 2011). Internally generated funds are the most popular funds, followed by new debt, and debt equity grants. Finally, new equity is the least important source. Order theory assumes that there is no target capital structure. Due to the weak selection, the firm chose internal for external finance. When external funding is needed, firms prefer debt to equity as information related to debt issues is low cost. This theory emphasizes that businesses must comply with hierarchy and internal funding sources if available, and debts are preferred over equity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The static trading theory and pecking order theory are two financial principles that help companies choose their capital structure. Both play the same role in the decision making process depending on the type of capital structure the company wishes to achieve. However, empirically the pecking order theory is most widely used in determining the company s capital structure. Static trading theory is a theory of finance based on the work of economists of Modigliani and Miller. With the theory of static trading, and since corporate debt repayment is a deductible tax and there is less risk involved in taking debt on equity, debt financing is initially cheaper than equity financing. This means that companies can reduce the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) through capital structure with debt on equity. However, increasing the amount of debt also increases the risk to the company, somewhat offsets the WACC decline. Thus, static trading theory identifies a mix of debt and equity where the WACC decline offsets the increased financial risk to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Sally s mind, her journey was definitely rewarded and this made her feel full inside . Sally s mother, Gladys, had also found an new sense of fulfillment which completed her as a whole, because she was previously only half a person . For Sally, it was her determination and stubborn nature which meant that she was rewarded, because in her heart she realized that unless the family went on such an epic journey we never would have known our place . • 33. Charles Eisenstein Disruption During the tenth week of my HUMI 1 class, I was deeply intrigued with the topic of disruption because it was something that I always viewed as a negative but soon found out that it can also be seen and used as a benefit. Charles Eisenstein discusses how disruption can be seen as a form of raising awareness towards something. You get the idea that we as people, are sometimes too far in the moment to realize what is happening around us as we are indulged in our own activities. When that occurs, disruption comes into play allowing for us to be conscious of our surroundings and the importance of something. Because disruption is something that I have experience with, I wanted to experiment with it and see how it can be applied to my life or those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I sat down to see how she has been doing the past days and surprisingly, she told me every little detail. She brought food with her whenever she studied, she knew when to take breaks, napped when she needed to, and went to bed early, rather than forcing herself to stay up late at night and study. She was clearly aware of all the problems that affected her mental health and made sure that she balanced everything out. Just to be sure that she took a break from studying that day, I asked her once again if she wanted get lunch. During our meal, she was the girl I have always known; full of life and ebullient. It was unanticipated, but Jenny thanked me. She noticed my actions in the past week and realized that my disruptions helped her be aware of what she was doing and how it was affecting her body. Jenny did not realize how important her well being was and worried more about school. Without me causing a disruption in her work flow, her mental health would have the possibility of worsening. • 34. Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm The Truman Show and Animal Farm Essay What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s novel Animal Farm, we see that once the animals gain power over the farm they have the good life and live in a perfect society. In the Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see that Truman doesn t know that Christof is controlling his life and he is always working towards living what he thinks is the good life. The good life is determined by having everything perfect. This then affects what the perfect society would look like because if everyone didn t have very much and wasn t treated equally the world would be a horrible place. People in power try to create perfect societies so people can live the good life. Power and control is the ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir demonstrates that power is corrupt and is a recipe for disaster. For example Christof stages a storm that supposedly kills Truman s father, making Truman afraid of water to stop him from leaving Seahaven Island. Mostly brilliant! Truman s been terrified of the water ever since. Likewise, in Animal Farm, George Orwell exemplifies that anyone can have power and when they have power they will use it to hurt others. For instance when Snowball suggests the windmill, Napoleon gets the dogs to chase Snowball away. In Snowball s absence, Napoleon declares himself the leader. Napoleon is always right. (Page 48) From then on the Pigs would run the farm. They took the ability to eat whatever and not have any rules away from the other animals. Both Weir and Orwell suggest that with power and control someone can overpower everyone else. The ability for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own future. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir suggests that without freedom one cannot be truly happy. Despite having everything, Truman s life in Seahaven is never truly complete. When Truman sits on the beach in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. U.s. Imposes Tariffs On Chinese Solar Panels This article discusses how the U.S. imposes tariffs on Chinese solar panels due to the fact that China was dumping solar panels to the U.S market, it also considers the possible impact of these changes and attempts to assess the relative merits/drawbacks of the policy. Dumping is the selling of goods and services on foreign markets below their cost of production[ http://study.com/academy/lesson/dumping in economics definition effects.html]. A tariff is defined as taxation on imported goods. Dumping of Chinese solar panels on the U.S market Chinese companies were selling products below the cost of manufacture also benefiting from unfair subsidies from their government this results the domestic quantity supply of solar panels to decrease as the price of domestic supplied solar panels is higher than ones imported from China. But U.S consumers are paying a lower price when solar panels are exported to the U.S from China and consumers get more variety of choices when buying. Even if America s solar market contained no trade barriers before this, the domestic quantity supplied would still decrease from Q2 to Q1 because most domestic solar companies cannot compete with the subsidized Chinese producers. Inexpensive Chinese solar products pushed many American manufacturers out of business , causing structural unemployment in America and this will be difficult for the U.S government to deal with because this will require retraining or other initiatives which can sometimes be ... • 36. The Hero In The Giver By Lois Lowry s The Giver In her 1994 Newberry Acceptance Speech, author Lois Lowry recalls a memory of a girl in her college dormitory. She describes the young woman saying She s a smart girl, a good student, a pleasant enough person, but she is different, somehow alien, (Lowry, Newbery Acceptance Speech ). One can see how Lowry had inspiration for the character Jonas in her novel, The Giver. When writing, The Giver Lowry creates a dystopian society where the government has taken away the population s ability to remember the past, see color, or have feelings. In the novel, Lois Lowry presents the protagonist and hero, Jonas. Jonas gets chosen to be the Receiver of Memory and his whole life changes. The current Receiver, an old man Jonas calls The Giver shows Jonas memories from the past that contain aspects ranging from history to feelings. He becomes aware of the government s actions in hiding all the qualities and rebels against them in the end, leaving the city behind. Jonas is a twelve year old hero who is different, yet intelligent, and more selfless than the majority of the population in the novel. Jonas s heroic personality can be analyzed through his vision, his reactions when receiving memories, and when he risks his life. Lowry first shows Jonas s heroism through how different he is from to the rest of the population through his vision. Whether it is through his eyes physically or the portrayal of color, Lowry emphasizes the importance of Jonas s vision. At the beginning of the novel, Lowry describes Jonas s eyes differently than the rest of the population. She says Almost every citizen in the community had dark eyes. His parents did, and Lily did, and so did all of his group members and friends. But there were a few exceptions: Jonas himself, and a female Five who he had noticed had the different, lighter eyes. (Lowry, The Giver 20). The description of Jonas s eyes indicates that there is something special about him and different than the rest of the population because his eyes are pale while the majority of others are dark. Jonas can see more deeply into objects than everyone else too again, showing how different and intelligent he is from to the rest of society. Lowry writes about Jonas s first experience with color ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
