Effects Of Urbanisation On The Hydrology Of A Catchment
Question 1 a) Explain the affects that Urbanisation can have on the hydrology of a catchment. Outline
how SuDs can mitigate these impacts and explain the role and features of the following systems:
Permeable pavements Swale Detention Ponds Urbanisation affects the hydrology of a catchment in
various ways, it causes issues with the natural drainage of the environment by blocking stream
channels and removing trees which help break the momentum of rain. Urbanisation creates a lot of
surfaces that are impermeable which causes water build up, the water picks up pollutants and
chemicals and these are dispersed into streams and rivers. Roads and pavements collect rainwater and
channel it into waterways rather than letting it disperse into the ground, like it would if it had not had
any human intervention. SuDs have been introduced within construction projects now in order mimic
the natural drainage pattern of a specific area, these SuDs that are now being introduced are aiding
urban developments in allowing surface water to be managed well without causing any impact on
other sites. Permeable paving comes in a range of materials, it was designed to allow water through a
surface that would have usually be impermeable, they are generally used on pathways, lawns and
roads that only take light vehicle movements. They essentially reduce surface water run off, which
traps solids and filters some pollutants from the water, they also give urban trees the chance to grow to

The Effect Of A Media Stimulus On The Perceptions Of...
Introduction Students of the class Introduction to Research Methods conducted two studies to collect
data on the perception of scientists. The purpose of the two studies conducted was to examine the
stereotypes of scientists of undergraduate Speech and Hearing Science majors, and whether the use of
media has an influence on these stereotypes. Study one was a descriptive study that consisted of
administering a Draw A Scientist test. This was done in order to understand the perceptions of
scientists in a sample of Speech and Hearing Science majors at a large research university in the
Midwest, and be able to compare the results to other literature. Study 2 was an experimental study,
conducted to analysis the effect of a media stimulus on the perceptions of scientist. The goal of
conducting two studies was to have the ability to compare the results of the descriptive study with the
experimental study in order to determine the effects of the media and analyze certain stereotypic
characteristics of a scientist. The Draw A Scientist Test was first administered by David W. Chambers
in 1983. He created the DAST in order to analyze the stereotypes involved in people s perceptions of
scientists. Seven specific attributes of a scientist were included on the coding sheet of the DAST.
These attributes included specific attributes of a scientist: a laboratory coat, eyeglass, facial hair,
symbols of research (scientific instruments and laboratory equipment), symbols of knowledge

a giant rabbit and his Aunt Calra warning Lennie that George will be angry at him for killing
Curley s wife and that he has lost the possibility of having a house with a rabbit hutch. George
reassures Lennie that they will have the rabbit hutch after all, meanwhile he is preparing to shoot his

them that Lennie had stolen the gun and that he shot Lennie in a fight.

Child Support In California
Just like every state, California has guidelines in their statutes that outline the what, where, how, and
why of child support. The primary purpose of child support in Riverside, California is to do just that;
support the child financially in order to provide for their needs. As far as the courts are concerned, that
means whatever is in the best interest of the child (children).
The basics of what is included in California Family Code 4053:
The father and mother s most important and first obligation is to provide support for their child.
The child support obligation is mutual, consistent with what is in the best interest of the child, and is
calculated according to the income of both parents.
A minor child has the right to share in the standard of living which both ... Show more content on

Likewise, child support may also reduce the imbalance in the standard of living for each parent.
California s cost of living is quite high and child support is ordered to reflect that fact.
California law surmises that the custodial parent, or the parent who contributes the most significant
amount of parenting time already contributes a significant amount of money and resources to support
the child. This factor can be rebutted depending on the circumstances.
California s guidelines for child support are intended to reduce litigation and conflict between parents.
The best interest of the child is the state s first priority regarding child support and the overall care of
the child.
Do these guidelines work as the legislature intends?
The goals of the statues regarding child support in Riverside, California are to prevent conflict
between parents, provide insurance that the child will have their needs met, and again, primarily
ensure their best interests are covered.

The Drinking Age Should Remain 18 Years Old in Australia
These days there are a number of social issues in the community, such as drug abuse, teenage
pregnancy and alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse is rampant in today s society, Australian Drug Foundation
states that, Alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive, or mood changing, recreational drug in
Australia. (Healey, 2002, p. 11). Underage drinking and binge drinking are some of the problems
associated with alcohol abuse.
Most countries and cultures across the world experience these issues with 83% of the world
population being allowed to drink at the age of 18, and the remaining 17% of the world population are

This is a custom that pervades every class in
the colony, and cannot be departed from without something more than a breach of good manners. (
Drinking Etiquette, n.d.)
Alcohol helps people remove their barriers; lose their inhibitions, and form friendships, relationships,
and acts as a social lubricant. In Australia many business deals have been conducted over a drink or
two.
In addition to the Australian drinking culture, at 18 years old you are legally an adult. Thus, society
has many expectations of young adults such as employment and study. Australian policies allow 18
year olds to vote, marry, drive a vehicle, and obtain a gun license; furthermore, it is 18 year olds right
as an adult to drink. Eighteen year olds could vote to change government, get married, have children,
enter into legally binding contracts and were treated as adults by the justice system, Queensland
Premier Anna Bligh said on a matter. (News, 2010). Before the Vietnam War in 1962 the legal
drinking age in Australia was 21. The drinking age in Australia was lowered to 18 from 21 during the
Vietnam War on the grounds that if 18 year olds could be conscripted, they should have the right to
vote and drink as well. (Urban, 2009). Therefore, the law has been previously changed and it would be
unadvisable to change the law again; these changes

Essay on the Structure of William Faulkner s A Rose for...
The Structure of A Rose for Emily
William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily is a story that uses flashbacks to foreshadow a surprise ending.
The story begins with the death of a prominent old woman, Emily, and finishes with the startling
discovery that Emily as been sleeping with the corpse of her lover, whom she murdered, for the past
forty years. The middle of the story is told in flashbacks by a narrator who seems to represent the
collective memory of an entire town. Within these flashbacks, which jump in time from ten years past
to forty years past, are hidden clues which prepare the reader for the unexpected ending, such as hints
of Emily s insanity, her odd behavior concerning the deaths of loved ones, and the evidence that the ...

When the people of the town try to explain away her odd behavior, they did not say she was crazy
then (paragraph 28). This implies that although at that time she wasn t considered insane, and although
the narrator never states so directly, there will come a time when she will be.
An important idiosyncrasy of Emily s that will help the reader to understand the bizarre finale of the
story, is her apparent inability to cope with the death of someone she cared for. When deputies were
sent to recover back taxes from Emily, she directed them to Colonel Sartoris, an ex mayor that had
told her she would never have to pay taxes, and a man that had been dead for ten years. Years before
this incident, however, after her father had died, she continued to act has if he had not, and only
allowed his body to be removed when threatened with legal action. Considering the fate of her lover s
corpse, one suspects she would have kept her father s corpse also, had the town not known of his
death.
Littered throughout the story is evidence that the murder took place. When Emily takes up with
Homer Barron, a man whom the narrator makes clear was not the marrying kind; rumors start to fly
about the two at a time when it was not considered proper for a man and woman to live together. The
town, her relatives, and the Baptist minister disapproved of the relationship, and Emily was in danger
of loosing Homer. A year after the relationship begins, and the pressures to either marry

Hinduism In Bali Essay
Hinduism in Bali
Indonesia is one of the biggest Muslim countries in the world, populating over 250 million people.
With that said, there is one island in Indonesia where the majority of the people are Hindu, Bali. Bali
is not a huge island but it is one of the most tourist attraction spots in the country. Bali has become the
most Hindu dominated island, from daily rituals to the architecture of the buildings, everything has a
Hindu influence. However, Hinduism in Bali has been a deviation of Hindu where they are a strong
influence from Animism and Old Javanese traditions. To this day, Bali contain mostly Hindu and there

With Muslim dominance in the country, Bali wasn t affected by this implementation due to some
cultural differences between the other Islands. Today, Bali is mostly Hindu dominated community in
the country and only consisting 10% of every other religion.
All religion in the world has their deviation from the original religion that was first introduced,
Hinduism in Bali is no different. Since the original Religion in Indonesia, Animism, there some its
influence in other religion in the country. Some animals and object become sacred in some of the
religion. Animism is the belief that supernatural essence exists in the inanimate objects and animals. It
first enters Indonesia in around the first century, right before Hinduism. But soon loses ground with
other major religion in Indonesia, now it s a small percentage. Why does animism need to be brought
up in this topic? Animism had a great influence on the culture and deviation of Hinduism that makes
was Bali as it is today.
Bali is the image of an Indian culture and old Javanese combination, where the Hinduism is the part of
India and Animism is the part of Old Javanese; this being the reason why many architectures in Bali is
influenced by. For example, the architecture is followed by several philosophies, one being the mostly
known philosophy, Tri Hita Karana. Tri Hita Karana is a concept that combines of 3 factors: Atma

Since the volatility of floating rates causes costs for exports and imports. It also encourages
international capital flows which can profit the welfare of a country. Especially in case of developing
countries these capital flows can be very large. One big Problem of the exchange rate regimes is the
loss of monetary and fiscal possibilities to stabilize the economy as well as Limitation of the ability to
pursue domestic goals. There is a slight difference between a hard peg and a fixed exchange rate, since
the fix exchange rate can be with several countries whereas the hard peg only pegs it currency to one
foreign country. They have more or less the same ad and disadvantages, but with a fixed exchange
rate, which is pegged to more than one country, the pursuit of domestic goals is easier, since the
country does not depend on one foreign economy. One major weakness of the fixed exchange rate is,
that when devaluation becomes necessary through fundamental changes in economy. Even the
announcement of devaluation creates the danger of a crisis and eventually ends in a crisis, like the
case of Argentina shows. It is also likely that a currency crisis after devaluation can end up in a
banking crisis, since fixed exchange rates give incentives to take on debt. (see below for further
information) Floating exchange rates can be found for example in the arrangement of the U.S. with

Juliette Morgan was a woman of wealth, status, education and connections. She was an aristocrat of

One seemingly insignificant thing about Morgan s life separated her from her privileged friends. She

she rode the city buses in Montgomery. On those buses, she saw white bus drivers use the tone and

KEY WORDS: Rural Marketing, Innovative Marketing Practices.
Abstract
The Indian rural market is much larger when compared to the urban market in terms of population and
number of households, and also by way of geographic dispersal. The rural market is the new driving
force of the Indian Consumption Story . With only 31.16% of the Indian population living in urban
areas and 68.84% residing in the villages (Census 2011), it is only a matter of time before rural India
takes its rightful place in the Indian growth story.
Introduction
There is growing realization among marketers about the enormous untapped potential of India s rural
markets. The Indian rural market with its vast size and demand base offers great opportunities to
companies. In India, there are 6,42000 villages . While agriculture used to be the major source of
income in rural areas, over the past 10 12 years, the dominance of agriculture has been rapidly
declining. The contribution of agriculture to India s GDP was less than 20% in 2008 09. There is a
sizeable population of self employed persons in the hinterland and quite a few of them are into
services such as repair and maintenance of motors and pump sets, televisions and other electrical

The Utility of Deterrence as a Central Nuclear Security...
Understanding what role exists for nuclear weapons in the post Cold War world requires an
appreciation for the strategic concepts that defined Cold War nuclear strategy, as well as the
applicability of those concepts to the contemporary world. Cold War nuclear strategy was almost
entirely concerned with the bilateral relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, and
thus the central strategic concept to arise from this period was the notion of deterrence. Following the
collapse of the Soviet Union and the ongoing proliferation of nuclear weapons, the utility of
deterrence as a central nuclear security strategy is in question, even as the threat posed by the mere
existence of nuclear weapons increases. By 1997, at least ten countries had missiles capable of
delivering nuclear payloads over 500 kilometers, and nearly every country without intercontinental
capability is working on it (Stanley Payne 1997, p. 133). Furthermore, some countries with nuclear
capabilities, such as Pakistan, are seeing a serious threat to internal security, increasing the likelihood
that nuclear weapons will find their way into the hands of transnational terrorist organizations and
other actors far less susceptible to strategies of deterrence. By examining both the state of nuclear
security during the Cold War and the concept of deterrence in general in the context of contemporary
security issues, it becomes clear that there is no secure place for nuclear weapons in the post Cold

The backgrounds of the set were beautifully detailed and realistically colored. The colors helped to set
the atmosphere of the play, using vibrant colors to create a happier, more optimistic tone and using
harsher colors to construct a foreboding mood around the darker scenes of the play. Accentuating the
colors were the special effects lighting, making the scenery appear more realistic by highlighting the
time of day, using more brilliant lighting for the daytime and muted colors for the sunset. In addition,
the costumes were lifelike, emulating the clothing of the time period. The transitions from scene to

I Am A Physician Assistant
Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. My eyes started to lose the strength to stay open and my vision began to blur.
The tight grip I had on the anesthesiologist s hand slowly withered away.
As an active thirteen year old who spent his afternoons and weekends playing basketball, I was taken
aback when I first heard of my atrial septal defect and inevitable open heart surgery. I could not
fathom being away from the court for so long. But what seemed like the end of my passion for
basketball ultimately lead to a new passion to become a physician assistant.
Throughout my experience as a surgical patient, I always noticed three things my medical team never

to notice that these ideals were essential in every successful physician patient relationship. As I
progressed in my career as a student, I came to realize that the academic and extracurricular activities
I was involved in were helping me perform those very qualities. I vividly remember sitting next to my
doctor with my knees trembling as he tried to explain my condition. I realized that the ability to advise
a young, scared, or uninformed individual was an indispensable tool to any practitioner. Just as my
physician was able to fulfill his duty to inform me, I informed others through ROOP NYC. ROOP is a

As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards worked tirelessly for a strong
national defense, and strengthening the security of our homeland. He authored key pieces of
legislation on Internet and port security, as well as biological terrorism. During the latter part of 2001
and throughout 2002, Edwards engaged in serious politicking, and on January 2, 2003, he announced

Gender Pay Gap
Gender Pay Gap The economic issue with the gender pay gap has been a concern for quite some time.
Many people say that men are paid more money, or have higher salaries than women; however, there
are also people who believe otherwise. Some argue that maternity leave or education level is a reason
why women seem to be paid less than men, and others argue that there is a bigger issue such as race
and age. The following information will address both viewpoints on the gender pay gap and its issues
within the economy, as well as history of women in the workforce.
History In Colonial America, women stayed at home and took care of the household, took care of the
children, made clothes, and made sure that there was food on the table while the men were at war.
During this time, a group was formed called The Daughters of Liberty. These women were successful
in proving that women can be beneficial to the new country in terms of politics and working. They
also wanted to steer away from the British lifestyle while men wanted to keep their traditions. They
refused to buy clothes, tea, or any other items that came from England, no matter what it was. They
formed spinning societies to make their own clothing, as well as clothing for their male family
members. This made America less dependent on British textiles, (Answers.) These Colonial American
women wanted to prove that they were committed to the cause of liberty and industry, (Answers.)

George does everything in his power to save Bluebell by using southern charm and hospitality.
Southern hospitality is a phrase used to describe the stereotype of people from the Southern United
States. They are particularly sweet, warm, and welcoming to visitors, or to the South in general. In
Hart of Dixie, George is a small town lawyer who everyone sees as warm, hospitable person. When
people think of the South they associate it with the antebellum period. Alexis Girardin Brown writes
that gender and racial hierarchy served to socialize both men and women into their appropriate spheres
(Brown 759). She says, Men operated in a public sphere, where they provided for their families and

communication and writing skills as well are highly required. The nurse has to communicate with the

Hurricane Mitigation Research Paper
Miami, Florida is located in an area that is exposed to a lot of natural hazards. Hurricanes and flooding
are two of the most prominent natural disasters that this area experiences. Due to the fact that these
natural disasters occur so frequently, mitigation plans have been implemented to decrease the potential
damage. In order to efficiently detect oncoming disasters, weather radars have been utilized to track
high precipitation that may lead to floods. In addition, hurricane experts study the past hurricanes that
passed through to get a better understanding of when a hurricane may strike. Other strategies to track
future hurricanes include monitoring hurricane patterns from space.
Currently, in Miami, Florida, many mitigation strategies have been introduced to lessen the damage

Though there are numerous mitigation strategies implemented already by the city of Miami, I
personally believe that there is room for improvement. The suggestion I have created involves the the
education of the citizens in Miami. I suggest that new citizens of Miami are required to attend a short
seminar on hurricane evacuation. Though this plan seems extreme and inconvenient, I believe that
evacuation strategies are the most important, because the process of evacuation is the least efficient,

Saint Augustine s Life Of Augustine
Saint Augustine
The Life of Augustine
Augustine was born in North Africa in AD 354 in the city of Thagaste. His father, Patricius, was a
pagan and his mother, Monica, a devoted Catholic who relentlessly prayed for her son s salvation.
Saint Augustine of Hippo wrote Confessions between AD 397 and AD 398. He is regarded as a great
theologian, philosopher, and one of most prolific Latin author s of many works. Augustine was
schooled at Tagaste and Madaura and later at Carthage where he became interested in Latin literature
and became a teacher of literature and public speaking. Later in Milan he converted to Catholicism
and was baptized, ordained, and eventually became the Bishop of Hippo. He is still considered an
influential, but very controversial bishop of the Catholic Church (Smither, 2009).
Confessions of Saint Augustine
Augustine wrote Confessions while he was a bishop at Hippo. The book was written using a peculiar
and very original style. It is a type of conversation from Augustine directed towards God. The book is
a form of autobiography, written in thirteen books that are bound together by the theme of God s grace
and redemption. His own life is testimony to this as God s love is seen in each stage he went through
along his journey back to the truth (Pusey, 2014).
Throughout the entire book Augustine uses philosophical and theological reasoning; he also includes
an exegesis of biblical scripture. In the first nine books are written as an autobiography where he

Compare And Contrast Functionalist And Stylistics
Two different approaches in Stylistics: Formalist Vs Functionalist
Stylistics as a particular way of approaching the meaning that a society produces has many tools to
analyze writer s or author s style of their works. There are actually several different approaches toward
stylistics including formalist, mentalist, textlinguistic/functionalist, pragmatic, radical and empirical,
however this paper will only focus on comparing and contrasting two different approaches, those are
Formalist and Functionalist.
Comparing Formalist and Functionalist
Generally both of them are interested in finding the meaning of the text, but formalists look at the text
semantically, while functionalists concern with the text pragmatically.

Firth and M.A.K Halliday. Malinowski, 1923 (cited in Burke, 2014) works on the importance of
situational context. Functionalists also look at context as important thing in constructing meaning.
Context will influence how we interpret a text. However, context is put in the highest level of
interpreting meaning. And then, Firth with his work Personality in language and society (1950).
Halliday (1994) (cited in Burke, 2014) in his work An Introduction to Functional Grammar proposed
what we called as metafunctions . Halliday believed that in a particular language there must be
tripartite functions, namely Ideational, Interpersonal and Textual. Ideational or well known as
experiential meaning which has a representational function is used to encode any idea or experience of
the world; it conveys a picture of reality. Interpersonal function means we use it to encode interaction
to see the social relationships. And the last is Textual function of language is used to organize our
experiential, logical and interpersonal meanings into a linear and coherent whole and it provides the
formal properties of language. (Halliday, 2014). All these functions work simultaneously and they
have relation one another. However, it still can be analyzed

Comparing The Sea Devil, And The Sea Devil And Edward s Rocks
Without the ocean, life as humankind knows it would be impossible. The ocean has provided the man
a bountiful amount of resources. It is easy to think that the big blue is man s friend. Though with
ninety five percent of the ocean unexplored, it is easy to think that it is more than sandy beaches and
volleyball. Stories such as The Sea Devil and Edward s Rocks express the idea that the sea, as
beautiful as it is, can also be equally as powerful and mysterious. Though stories share similarities
they also have differences between their protagonist, conflict, and settings.
The two stories have many similarities though their locations differ. Both take place at night in a
marine area, with both of the protagonists on a pursuit. and Though they take place in different
decades the stories both occur at night. In The Sea Devil, the night is described as Black as a witch s
cat (Gordon, n.d., p. 2). However, unlike Edward s Rocks, The Sea Devil takes place in a warm
Florida bay in late September, whereas Edward s Rocks takes place in a quiet fishing village of
Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland (Ritson, 1997, p. 300). Edward s Rocks describes George as a
hardy fisherman who hunts for seals for a living with his father and two brothers. While George and
his brothers and father are searching for seals the story says that the sea was ominous, and... felt
uneasy (Ritson, 1997, p. 305), while the protagonist in The Sea Devil night is described as Dark and
silent (Gordon, n.d., p.1).Even though both the stories take place in coastal locations the two
environments have their own unique features, such as the warm Florida bay in The Sea Devil , where s
Edward s Rocks was more of an aggressive northern marine environment.
The conflict in the two stories both can be considered as a person vs environment scenario. The
conflict in Edward s Rocks that George faced was a combination of the weather and navigational
issues. While George his father and brothers are out at sea they used a compass to help them navigate
to Pimming Islands, where they planned to hunt seals. Unfortunately a piece of metal under the
gangboards of their boat which interfered with the compass magnetic field, setting them of course into

The Causes Of High Student Debt
The Causes of High Student Debt
Today, in our society there is high expectation for students to go higher education after finishing high
school. Since College tuition is going skyrocket a lot of students are having hard time paying for their
tuitions. Most students, to pay for their college tuition, they have to apply for loans that put them in
dept after they graduate According to recent report by Fay, 72% of the Class of 2017 graduates owes
an average of more than $37,000 for the four years they put in earning a degree (Fay). These graduates
have only six month grace period before the first loan payment is due and for most of them; this is not
the way they expected to start their adult life (Fay). After graduation this debt can be overwhelming to
pay off. It isn t fair, but that s what it s like to be a student these days. It is very important to know the
factors that led to increase student loans. That helps students and their families to educate themselves
and to manage the loans.
The number one cause for students to get into too much debt is the high increase in college tuition cost
every year. According to Best, College costs are climbing faster than the cost of living, with more than
half of college students carrying an average debt of $27,000 at graduation (Best I II). Students tend to
be overburdened with debt when they graduate. Some go on to pursue advanced degrees; on the way,
they end up with more debt because the career these students are hoping for is

  • 2. Effects Of Urbanisation On The Hydrology Of A Catchment Question 1 a) Explain the affects that Urbanisation can have on the hydrology of a catchment. Outline how SuDs can mitigate these impacts and explain the role and features of the following systems: Permeable pavements Swale Detention Ponds Urbanisation affects the hydrology of a catchment in various ways, it causes issues with the natural drainage of the environment by blocking stream channels and removing trees which help break the momentum of rain. Urbanisation creates a lot of surfaces that are impermeable which causes water build up, the water picks up pollutants and chemicals and these are dispersed into streams and rivers. Roads and pavements collect rainwater and channel it into waterways rather than letting it disperse into the ground, like it would if it had not had any human intervention. SuDs have been introduced within construction projects now in order mimic the natural drainage pattern of a specific area, these SuDs that are now being introduced are aiding urban developments in allowing surface water to be managed well without causing any impact on other sites. Permeable paving comes in a range of materials, it was designed to allow water through a surface that would have usually be impermeable, they are generally used on pathways, lawns and roads that only take light vehicle movements. They essentially reduce surface water run off, which traps solids and filters some pollutants from the water, they also give urban trees the chance to grow to full ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story begins with the death of a prominent old woman, Emily, and finishes with the startling discovery that Emily as been sleeping with the corpse of her lover, whom she murdered, for the past forty years. The middle of the story is told in flashbacks by a narrator who seems to represent the collective memory of an entire town. This implies that although at that time she wasn t considered insane, and although the narrator never states so directly, there will come a time when she will be. An important idiosyncrasy of Emily s that will help the reader to understand the bizarre finale of the story, is her apparent inability to cope with the death of someone she cared for. When deputies were sent to recover back taxes from Emily, she directed them to Colonel Sartoris, an ex mayor that had told her she would never have to pay taxes, and a man that had been dead for ten years. Years before this incident, however, after her father had died, she continued to act has if he had not, and only allowed his body to be removed when threatened with legal action. Considering the fate of her lover s corpse, one suspects she would have kept her father s corpse also, had the town not known of his death. Littered throughout the story is evidence that the murder took place. When Emily takes up with Homer Barron, a man whom the narrator makes clear was not the marrying kind; rumors start to fly about the two at a time when it was not considered proper for a man and woman to live together. It also encourages international capital flows which can profit the welfare of a country. Especially in case of developing countries these capital flows can be very large. One big Problem of the exchange rate regimes is the loss of monetary and fiscal possibilities to stabilize the economy as well as Limitation of the ability to pursue domestic goals. There is a slight difference between a hard peg and a fixed exchange rate, since the fix exchange rate can be with several countries whereas the hard peg only pegs it currency to one foreign country. They have more or less the same ad and disadvantages, but with a fixed exchange rate, which is pegged to more than one country, the pursuit of domestic goals is easier, since the country does not depend on one foreign economy. One major weakness of the fixed exchange rate is, that when devaluation becomes necessary through fundamental changes in economy. Even the announcement of devaluation creates the danger of a crisis and eventually ends in a crisis, like the case of Argentina shows. • 15. The Utility of Deterrence as a Central Nuclear Security... Understanding what role exists for nuclear weapons in the post Cold War world requires an appreciation for the strategic concepts that defined Cold War nuclear strategy, as well as the applicability of those concepts to the contemporary world. Cold War nuclear strategy was almost entirely concerned with the bilateral relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, and thus the central strategic concept to arise from this period was the notion of deterrence. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ongoing proliferation of nuclear weapons, the utility of deterrence as a central nuclear security strategy is in question, even as the threat posed by the mere existence of nuclear weapons increases. By 1997, at least ten countries had missiles capable of delivering nuclear payloads over 500 kilometers, and nearly every country without intercontinental capability is working on it (Stanley Payne 1997, p. 133). Furthermore, some countries with nuclear capabilities, such as Pakistan, are seeing a serious threat to internal security, increasing the likelihood that nuclear weapons will find their way into the hands of transnational terrorist organizations and other actors far less susceptible to strategies of deterrence. By examining both the state of nuclear security during the Cold War and the concept of deterrence in general in the context of contemporary security issues, it becomes clear that there is no secure place for nuclear weapons in the post Cold ... The suggestion I have created involves the the education of the citizens in Miami. I suggest that new citizens of Miami are required to attend a short seminar on hurricane evacuation. Though this plan seems extreme and inconvenient, I believe that evacuation strategies are the most important, because the process of evacuation is the least efficient, and causes the most ... • 32. Comparing The Sea Devil, And The Sea Devil And Edward s Rocks Without the ocean, life as humankind knows it would be impossible. The ocean has provided the man a bountiful amount of resources. It is easy to think that the big blue is man s friend. Though with ninety five percent of the ocean unexplored, it is easy to think that it is more than sandy beaches and volleyball. Stories such as The Sea Devil and Edward s Rocks express the idea that the sea, as beautiful as it is, can also be equally as powerful and mysterious. Though stories share similarities they also have differences between their protagonist, conflict, and settings. The two stories have many similarities though their locations differ. Both take place at night in a marine area, with both of the protagonists on a pursuit. and Though they take place in different decades the stories both occur at night. In The Sea Devil, the night is described as Black as a witch s cat (Gordon, n.d., p. 2). However, unlike Edward s Rocks, The Sea Devil takes place in a warm Florida bay in late September, whereas Edward s Rocks takes place in a quiet fishing village of Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland (Ritson, 1997, p. 300). Edward s Rocks describes George as a hardy fisherman who hunts for seals for a living with his father and two brothers. While George and his brothers and father are searching for seals the story says that the sea was ominous, and... felt uneasy (Ritson, 1997, p. 305), while the protagonist in The Sea Devil night is described as Dark and silent (Gordon, n.d., p.1).Even though both the stories take place in coastal locations the two environments have their own unique features, such as the warm Florida bay in The Sea Devil , where s Edward s Rocks was more of an aggressive northern marine environment. The conflict in the two stories both can be considered as a person vs environment scenario. The conflict in Edward s Rocks that George faced was a combination of the weather and navigational issues. While George his father and brothers are out at sea they used a compass to help them navigate to Pimming Islands, where they planned to hunt seals.
