What is stress?
 Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressures or other
types of demand placed upon them. It arises when they worry that
they can’t cope.
 Stress is the “wear and tear” our minds and bodies experience as we
attempt to cope with our continually changing environment.

 Stress occurs when the pressure is greater than the resource

External stressors

 Physical Environment
– noise,bright lights,heat,confined spaces
 Social Interaction
– rudeness,bossiness,aggressiveness by others,bullying
 Organisational
– rules,regulations,deadlines
 Major Life Events
– birth,death,lost job,promotion,marital status change
 Daily Hassles
– commuting,misplaced keys,mechanical breakdowns
Internal stressors
 Lifestyle choices
– Caffeine,lack of sleep,overloaded schedule
 Negative self – talk
– Pessimistic thinking,self criticism,over analysing
 Mind traps
– Unrealistic expectations,taking things personally,all or nothing
thinking,exaggeration,rigid thinking
 Personality traits
– Perfectionists,workaholics
Types of stress

Distress
Eustress
 Eustress, or positive stress, has the following characteristics:
Motivates, focuses energy
Is short-term
Is perceived as within our coping abilities
Feels exciting
Improves performance
Distress
 In contrast, Distress, or negative stress, has the
following characteristics:
Causes anxiety or concern
Can be short- or long-term
Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities
Feels unpleasant
Decreases performance
Can lead to mental and physical problems
Suggestions for reducing stress
 Find a support system. Find someone to talk to about your feelings
and experiences
 Change your attitude.
 Be realistic.
 Get organized and take charge.
 Take breaks, give yourself "me time.“
 Take good care of yourself.
Suggestions for reducing stress
 Learn to say "no."
 Get regular exercise.
 Ge a hobby, do something different
 Slow down. Know your limits
 Laugh, use humor.
 Learn to relax.

  • 2. What is stress?  Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed upon them. It arises when they worry that they can’t cope.  Stress is the “wear and tear” our minds and bodies experience as we attempt to cope with our continually changing environment.  S = P > R  Stress occurs when the pressure is greater than the resource

External stressors  Physical Environment – noise,bright lights,heat,confined spaces  Social Interaction – rudeness,bossiness,aggressiveness by others,bullying  Organisational – rules,regulations,deadlines  Major Life Events – birth,death,lost job,promotion,marital status change  Daily Hassles – commuting,misplaced keys,mechanical breakdowns

Internal stressors  Lifestyle choices – Caffeine,lack of sleep,overloaded schedule  Negative self – talk – Pessimistic thinking,self criticism,over analysing  Mind traps – Unrealistic expectations,taking things personally,all or nothing thinking,exaggeration,rigid thinking  Personality traits – Perfectionists,workaholics
  • 8. Eustress  Eustress, or positive stress, has the following characteristics: Motivates, focuses energy Is short-term Is perceived as within our coping abilities Feels exciting Improves performance
  • 9. Distress  In contrast, Distress, or negative stress, has the following characteristics: Causes anxiety or concern Can be short- or long-term Is perceived as outside of our coping abilities Feels unpleasant Decreases performance Can lead to mental and physical problems
  • 10. Suggestions for reducing stress  Find a support system. Find someone to talk to about your feelings and experiences  Change your attitude.  Be realistic.  Get organized and take charge.  Take breaks, give yourself "me time.“  Take good care of yourself.
  • 11. Suggestions for reducing stress  Learn to say "no."  Get regular exercise.  Ge a hobby, do something different  Slow down. Know your limits  Laugh, use humor.  Learn to relax.
