The Rabbit Branch Tributary project restored over 1,500 linear feet of degraded stream channel using natural channel design techniques. The project established a stable channel geometry, reconnected the stream to its floodplain, installed in-stream structures to reduce erosion and improve habitat, and planted native vegetation. The restoration is expected to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution entering Pohick Creek on an annual basis. The project involved teams from Fairfax County and private environmental firms.

Flatlick Branch - Phase 1 Stream Restoration

Fairfax County

The Flatlick Branch - Phase I Stream Restoration project involved restoring over 1,850 linear feet of stream and tributaries. It upgraded an existing stormwater basin to a constructed wetland, replaced a failed stream crossing, and sewer main. Native plants were installed, and the project provides pollutant removal and water quality benefits. Substantially completed in December 2016, it was a partnership between Fairfax County agencies and the Park Authority.

Franklin Park and Chesterbrook Neighborhood Stormwater Improvement Project

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services upgraded over 3000 linear feet of stormwater infrastructure in the Franklin Park and Chesterbrook neighborhoods to reduce flooding, improve stormwater flow and water quality. The project was completed on time and on budget in December 2016 through the construction of swales, infiltration trenches, underground storage chambers and permeable surfaces. The project is estimated to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment runoff into local waterways.

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration Project

Accotink Creek at Wakefield Park Stream Restoration project was substantially completed on November 23, 2021. This project consists of restoring, enhancing, and stabilizing of approximately 4,900 linear feet of stream channel through the installation of four Newbury Riffles within the main channel of Accotink Creek and one Newbury Riffle within a side channel to provide aquatic benefits, grade control, improve water quality and prevent further erosion.

Pohick Creek Tributary Stream Restoration Project

Fairfax County

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services restored over 1,300 linear feet of degraded tributary of Pohick Creek using natural channel design techniques. This included establishing a stable channel geometry, reconnecting the channel to its floodplain, installing in-stream structures, and replanting native vegetation. The project aims to reduce erosion and improve habitat while also decreasing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment runoff into Pohick Creek. Construction involved excavating the existing channel, installing grade control structures, and cleaning out the existing stormwater pond.

Flatlick Branch Phase II Stream Restoration Project

The Flatlick Branch Phase II Stream Restoration project included restoration of 4,600 linear feet of Flatlick Branch and its tributaries, provided a sustainable channel form, pattern and profile to meet today’s developed landscape, added in-stream habitat enhancement and flood plain restoration, rock structures to provide grade control throughout the channel and provide energy dissipation, and the planting of the stream areas with native vegetation.

Sunset Hills Road Walkway

The Sunset Hills Road Walkway project in Fairfax County, VA was substantially completed on May 2, 2016. The project included constructing 1,570 feet of pedestrian walkway and curb ramps, installing 136 feet of stormwater pipe and structures, resurfacing 303 feet of the W&OD trail, and adding a rest area with bench and water fountain and two bus pads for future bus service. The project was led by the Department of Transportation and Utilities Design and Construction Division of Fairfax County.

The Fairfax County Park Authority restored an eroded 185-foot stream channel within the Pinecrest Golf Course that is owned by the Park Authority. The restoration project stabilized the stream bank and installed rock walls and structures to improve the channel. Native plants were also planted to enhance habitat. The project was completed on time and within budget in April 2016 to address erosion issues along Turkeycock Run.

Oakton Swim and Racquet Water Quality Retrofit

The Oakton Swim & Racquet Water Quality Retrofit Project in Fairfax County, VA involved retrofitting three stormwater inlet areas with rain gardens to improve water quality. The project was completed in April 2015. It installed rain gardens to remove sediment and pollutants from stormwater runoff, reducing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment levels in nearby waterways. The project team included members from the county's Stormwater Planning Division, Urban Forest Management Division, and Utilities Design and Construction Division.

Crosspointe Pond Retrofit 2014

The work on this project included investigation and repair to an 8-inch sewer line in Waterway Drive which had been previously lined with a plastic liner system. The project location was in Waterway Drive from Cavalier Court to the vicinity of Half Moon Circle. The project involved setting up a bypass system to remove sewage from the line so the pipe could be properly cleaned and inspected. Following this process, it was determined the plastic liner was causing capacity issues. It was determined that the liner could be repaired using internal methods and no excavation was needed. In addition, the five manholes associated with the segments of pipe in the project area were also rehabilitated. This project was substantially complete on June 25, 2021.

Dead Run Stream Restoration Segment 2 – 3

A Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera became stuck in the sanitary sewer line located in the Old Keene Mill Shopping Center. Wastewater Design and Construction Division mobilized to the site with the on-call contractor to begin the 15-foot excavation to replace 50 feet of broken gravity sewer. Because the work was within a shopping center parking lot, the project team worked the night shift to limit disturbance to the community. After four days of work, the camera was retrieved, and the pit was backfilled. This project was substantially complete on August 27, 2021.

SULLY BASINS STORMWATER POND RETROFITS

The Sully Basins Stormwater Pond Retrofits project was substantially completed on April 19, 2022. The project is located within the Cub Run watershed. The project consisted of repair and enhancement of multiple stormwater basins, 0326DP, 0964DP and 1484DP. The project also included construction of new stone cascades, stone weir basin structures and the construction of wetlands with high and low marsh areas. The project will facilitate improved sediment removal and improve downstream water quality using forebays and micro pools. Aquatic and natural habitat were also added within the three basins.

Armfield Farm Detention Basin Retrofit

The Armfield Farm Sec. 5 Detention Basin Retrofit project in Fairfax County, VA was substantially completed on November 15, 2014. The project retrofitted an existing stormwater pond to provide improved downstream water quality and detention. Work included removing a trickle ditch, excavating micro pools, constructing a lined channel, and regrading the pond. Upon completion, the project is estimated to remove 12.04 lbs/year of total phosphorus, 54.83 lbs/year of total nitrogen, and 2,358.26 lbs/year of total suspended solids from runoff. The project team oversaw construction and restoration of the site was seeded, planted with live stakes and trees.

Scotts Run at Old Meadow Road Park Phase I and Phase II Stream Restoration

Scotts Run @ Old Meadow Road Stream Restoration was substantially completed on March 30, 2022. The Scotts Run project consisted of restoring, enhancement, and stabilizing of approximately 2,930 linear feet of eroding stream using Natural Channel Design criteria. This project included two phases: Phase I was funded by proffers from a private development and Phase II was County funded. Also included was the removal of invasive non-native plants and the installation of new plantings to stabilize the stream and floodplain.

Indian Run Restoration Project

Jermantown Vehicle Services Maintenance Facility Upgrades

The Jermantown Maintenance Facility in Fairfax County, VA underwent renovations and an addition that cost $3.6 million. The project involved replacing outdated building systems like vehicle service lifts and extending the sprinkler system. Additional work included upgrading mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Existing locker rooms were renovated to comply with ADA standards. The substantial completion date was November 28, 2018.

The North Shore Drive Sidewalk Improvements project has been Substantially Completed. The overall project scope was to increase pedestrian safety along North Shore Drive . The new pedestrian walkway consists of 2,315 lineal feet of 5-foot wide concrete sidewalk and 224 lineal feet of 6-foot wide asphalt walking path. The project started approximately 500 feet West of Sycamore Valley drive and extended to approximately 400 feet East of Links Drive. Also, along with the improved pedestrian access, upgrades were made to the storm drain system, a new concrete pad was placed for the existing bus shelter and the Eastbound lane of North Shore Drive was milled and new asphalt and striping was installed.

Great Passage Storm Sewer Improvement Project

Fairfax County

This project improved drainage and reduced flood potential in a Fairfax County community. It installed a headwall, yard inlet, and pedestrian bridge with handrails to increase water flow into the storm sewer system. The project cleared land, excavated, installed structures, widened a swale, added landscaping and restored the site with native plants. It was completed in May 2014 by a project team from the county's Maintenance and Stormwater Management and Utilities Design and Construction divisions.

Towlston Meadows Restoration Project

The renovation will provide for a Crisis Care Program providing adult crisis stabilization treatment services through the Fairfax County Community Services Board (CSB). Scotts Run Tributary at Windy Hill Road Stream Stabilization

This stream stabilization is located within the Scotts Run Watershed in McLean, Va. The project restored 600 feet of intermittent stream using natural channel design, installed a new drop inlet, 32 linear feet of 36-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, an end wall at Box Elder Court, and installation of instream structures such as rock weir, imbricated toe protection, step pools, reinforced bed material.

LAKE BARTON DREDGING, RESTORATION AND RISER MODIFICATION PROJECT

The Lake Barton Dredging, Restoration, and Riser Modification project was substantially completed on December 29, 2021. The project is located within the Pohick Creek watershed. The project consisted of dredging and removal of approximately 19,100 cubic yards of sediment to restore the sediment trapping capacity and improve water quality. The project also included construction of new sediment forebays, in-lake haul roads, and riser modifications (new mid-level sluice gate and cold-water intake) to facilitate future maintenance, stabilize the shoreline, and improve downstream water quality. Fish habitat was also added within the lake.

Colvin Run Phase I Lake Fairfax Park Stream Restoration Project

Fairfax County

The Colvin Run Phase I Lake Fairfax Park Stream Restoration Project restored 2,220 feet of Colvin Run Branch in Fairfax County, VA through natural channel design. This included improving stream morphology, reducing erosion, re-aligning the stream, creating wetlands, replacing a culvert, and landscaping with native plants. The project team included various Fairfax County departments and was completed in August 2017. It is estimated to reduce pollution in the stream annually.

During a routine Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera inspection by Wastewater Collection Division (WCD), it was found that 45 linear feet of 8-inch asbestos reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) between MH-292 to MH-291 was within imminent danger of failing. The bottom of the RCP was missing within the 45 linear feet of repair and the pipe was on the verge of surcharging. After an immediate pre-construction meeting with Merrifield Nursery, it was agreed to work from 6pm-10am everyday of the week to avoid disruption and potentially placing patrons at risk during the biggest time of the year for Merrifield Garden Center. The contractor mobilized to the site and began the 20-foot excavation to replace 45 linear feet of broken gravity sewer. The project started on March 14th, 2022 and was substantially complete on March 23, 2022.

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoring

Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.

Climate change's impact on the planet forced the United Nations and governments to promote green energies and electric transportation. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. In addition, the proposed system allows for an isolated power setup without the need for a transmission line which enhances the safety of the electrical network

The proper function of the integrated circuit (IC) in an inhibiting electromagnetic environment has always been a serious concern throughout the decades of revolution in the world of electronics, from disjunct devices to today’s integrated circuit technology, where billions of transistors are combined on a single chip. The automotive industry and smart vehicles in particular, are confronting design issues such as being prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Electronic control devices calculate incorrect outputs because of EMI and sensors give misleading values which can prove fatal in case of automotives. In this paper, the authors have non exhaustively tried to review research work concerned with the investigation of EMI in ICs and prediction of this EMI using various modelling methodologies and measurement setups.
