This document outlines strategies for agricultural development in Pakistan. It identifies constraints like water shortage, soil depletion, and pesticide overuse. To address these, it proposes increasing crop area through new irrigation projects, boosting yields through research, and shifting crop patterns. Specifically, it suggests using over 1 million hectares of new irrigation land to grow wheat, developing wheat and chickpea varieties suited to stress tolerance, and replacing chickpeas with wheat in certain areas. This could potentially increase wheat production to over 26 million tons annually, meeting domestic needs while enabling exports. The strategies aim to make agriculture more productive, profitable and competitive to raise its GDP contribution.
