1. Muhammad Rafique was the author's grandfather who served in the British army as a wireless operator and received 12 medals, but left to join the independence movement for Pakistan. 2. At the time of partition in 1947, Rafique helped save many Muslim families in Lahore as Hindu and Sikh mobs killed Muslims migrating by train. He formed a team to rescue Muslims being held and killed at a Sikh temple. 3. After independence, Rafique helped non-Muslim families migrate peacefully, following Quaid-e-Azam's vision of an inclusive Pakistan. He then joined the Pakistan army and served the country until his death on April 8, 1989.
