Stereotypes are biased preconceived notions about how people from certain groups will behave. They are influenced by parents and developed through categorization of people. While stereotypes are often negative, some can be positive like saying French people are good cooks. Stereotypes are not always about minorities and can exist within one's own group. They also change over time and are not always entirely false despite sometimes being exaggerations. The document addresses how youth culture can be positively or negatively stereotyped, such as with the London riots where youth were largely blamed by the media.

• What is a stereotype?- a stereotype is a
biased opinion from other people pre
conserved conceptions of people assume a
person is going to act in a certain way. We
believe what we are meant to believe, we
categorise people. Some of our stereotypes
are influenced from our parents and their
views.

• Stereotyping is not a simple process and contains
a number of assumptions that can be challenged,
she identifies 5 assumptions:
1. Not always negative- e.g. French people are
good cooks
2. They are not always about a minority groups or
the less powerful e.g. upper class twits.
3. They can be held in ones own group.
4. They are not rigid or unchanging.
5. They are not always false.

• Stereotypes need to be formed on some king
of truth, although they might be exaggerated.
• ‘Hoodie culture’ however youth can be seen
as positive.
• London riots, youths were blamed, middle
aged people and the media made it look like
young people were behind it all.
• However youth can be seen as a positive
representation, they are the future.
