2. Similarities
• In any music video, there are basic
conventions no matter what genre they are. In
all music videos we see different camera
angles, effects, and a change of mise-en-scene.
3. Editing
• In most music videos we can see that editing
is prominent we see jump cuts to show the
audience there is a sudden change in
location/scene. Another key convention we
see a lot in music videos is fade and dissolve
effects, they create a different effect to cuts.
4. Lighting, Colour and Sound
• Some music videos use special effects such as filming
the video in black and white to help to emphasise a
particular mood. The use of lighting in music videos
also helps create different moods and emotions e.g. in
Ellie Goulding’s ‘I Need Your Love’ They use soft
lighting to help create a romantic feel. In most music
videos the sound is just the vocals to the song, but like
we have seen in Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)’
we see speech is featured creating the music video to
be more like a short film. The use of colours also help
set the mood for an audience, dark colours are used
more in rock songs, and bright colours are used more
in hip hop and pop music videos.
