Beck s Hybrids As A Regional Family Owned Seed
Beck s Hybrids
Beck s Hybrids is a regional family owned seed corn company that serves farmers in Indiana, Illinois,
Ohio, Southern Michigan, Western Kentucky, Iowa, Tennessee and Eastern Missouri. The main
headquarters is located in Atlanta, Indiana. Beck s has been in business for over 78 years. The
business started in 1937 with just family planting and harvesting the crops. At the time, Mr. Beck didn
t realize this launch was going to be a huge success for the second and third generations of the Beck
family. Over time, the company expanded to the owner, his wife and a few farm employees. Beck s
Hybrids has become the largest family owned seed corn business in the United States by recruiting
and selecting talented people. In 1990, there were 15 full time employees and six of them were Beck
family members. By 2006, there were 80 full time employees. Today, there are over 500 full time
employees. In the summer that number grows to over 700, that includes interns and summer help.
Beck s Hybrids has become the number one family owned seeds corn company in the United States by
hiring qualified people. Since 1990, their corn and soybean sales have increased 20% each year. I am
going to identify the critical success factors that have made Beck s Hybrids successful.

Homosexual Culture in America and China
Homosexuality is considered as sub culture in modem society. However, nowadays, it is freely
discussed and widely analyzed among the world. The sharply increasing amount of homosexuals and
the heated argument raised by people has drawn more and more eyes. This paper is centered on
homosexual culture especially in America and China.
General concepts on homosexual
Homosexual used to be the abominable crime not to be mentioned. in America. After the word gay
emerged for years, a vast majority of American start to change their attitude. Now they retain a deep
loathing toward homosexuals, but there is a growing mixture of tolerance, empathy or apathy. While

The number of homosexuals in the United States is about 100 million concentrating densely in
metropolitan area. On June 28, San Francisco will hold an annual gay parade, attracting homosexuals
around the world. Therefore, considering the gay community as a significant voter base, politicians
have to deal cautiously with the issue of homosexuality. Actually it is supportive and helpful for the
gay rights movement.
In contrast, on this certain aspect, China still has a long way to go. It also reflects the Chinese citizens
immaturity of the Awareness of rights protection
Hot issues about homosexual culture
Homosexuality is a unique cultural behavior, which is not widely accepted by the community and
alienated from the mainstream culture. People who are against it require the legal prohibition, and who
support it request for setting laws to recognize its legitimacy. Thus, would homosexuality be given
legal protection has become the focus. America and China are no exception.
In 1993, Hawaii first put forward the legal possibility of same sex marriage, but was rejected. Since
then, the U.S. 30 states and the federal government have passed legislation to ban recognition of same
sex marriage. March 16, a law allowing gay s marriage passed by House of Representatives in
Vermont with 76 votes to 69 votes. After the vote, they cried

The Pont Du Gard In Nimes From 20-16 BCE, And The Pantheon
Roman Architecture has always been embraced deeply due to the simplicity and the aesthetic
sensation it communicates. However, the actual reason it is truly recognized, is by its very structured
and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many
aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts,
design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how each design satisfies its intended purpose and large
exterior and interior spaces. There are many important Roman designs, but the two designs that
demonstrate the Roman design methodology is the Pont du Gard in Nimes from 20 16 BCE and The
Pantheon from 125 A.D.
To understand, how these designs emphasized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Pantheon, the primary materials used in the Pantheon include brick, granite, concrete, volcanic
rock. The importance of concrete in this designed is it helped create the so famous dome in the
Pantheon. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The dome has a circular oculus in the middle which emits light.
The heavy dome is held by concrete foundations and is made of concrete which demonstrates how
they mastered concrete so greatly. According to (Encyclopedia Britannica), the dome measures about
142 feet in diameter and has a rising height of 71 feet above its base. (The dome also is said to have a
brick faced walls inside the design for support. The design also has arches and vaults that serve as a
structural load. The arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression to the dome.
This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very crucial to understanding why the
Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial aspect in this design
because vaults are a series of arches that create a structural load. The arches helped created
compression between the domes and the vaults which were in the bottom of the pantheon help create
compression with the arches making the dome very strong. Understanding the importance of the
arches, vaults and domes in this

Essay on Shelby Foote s Shiloh
Shelby Foote s Shiloh
In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account
of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the
troops movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier s mind, Foote
offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle
becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple
foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun
smoke. The author s vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history.
This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters
accessable, the author just doesn t have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real
emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on
the battle and what it means even for the individual characters he has presented.
I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with Shiloh.
But this means that the novel doesn t really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped with prior
knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have
preferred a more comprehensive treatment something more like Tom Wicker s Unto This Hour. That s
just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can t help it if I just want more.
Fans of Shelby Foote s massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the work s
biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote s earlier novel about the battle of Shiloh. I
couldn t help thinking, however, that Foote s real calling is as historian and commentator, and his
effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark.
Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara s brilliant Killer
Angels, a comparison that does not bode

Personal Responsibility Work And Opportunity Act Analysis
The Personal Responsibility Work and Opportunity Act was a bill that was passed into law in 1996.
This law created a new program called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). The changes
in the TANF program were significantly different than the Aid to Families with Dependent Children
(AFDC) program. The TANF program became a part of the national welfare reform which puts a stop
to women with children being entitled to an endless amount of cash benefits. Welfare reform was part
of President Bill Clinton and his campaign s promise to end welfare as we know it (Gilbert and Terrell
2013 p.74). The sponsor of this bill was a Republican representative for Ohio s 12th Congressional
district and his name was John Kasich (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/104/hr3734). ... Show

Responsibility Work and Opportunity Act to become a law. The party affiliations of this act are

Miss Shoshone-Bannock Title Analysis
What this title means can t be answered in just one simple statement because it has multiple meanings
to me. Some young ladies say It means representing myself, my family, and my tribe to the best of my
ability , yes that s what it can mean to someone but that statement is more of a broad answer. In my
eyes it is much more than representing my family, my tribe or even myself this title has a lot more
meaning if you really think about it. The title Miss Shoshone Bannock is a very respectable and
honorable. It is an opportunity to represent and be an ambassador of the Tribes. Being able to go out

The Depositional Environment, Petrology, Mineralogy,...
The purpose of this paper is to explain the depositional environment, petrology, mineralogy, structure,
exploration, technology, methods of extraction and processing, as well as the applications and
economics of oil in the Greater Green River Basin. This paper will mainly focus on the oil shale
within the basin but will also touch on some of the more conventional oil and gas plays as well.
According to Crawford and Killen (2010), Oil Shale is defined as being a sedimentary rock embedded
with organic material called kerogen... and has not been under the necessary heat, pressure, and/or
depth for the right length of time to form crude oil . Oil shale is typically found in silica and carbonate
based rocks that are usually no greater than 900 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the United States current demand for oil at roughly 20 million barrels per day, this resource
could potential last for another 400 years. These types of numbers suggest that if low cost production
methods can be developed and used effectively to recover the oil, the economic benefits would be
great. In the following paper I intend to give clear and succinct information on how oil shale was
deposited in the Greater Green River Basin, what it is made of, what was the maturation history of the
shale, how the oil is recovered from very impermeable sedimentary units, how economics will play a
role in its future as a reliable energy source, as well as the environmental impact of oil production in
the basin.
Structure of the Greater Green River Basin
The Greater Green River Basin is a basin located in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The mountains
that surround the basin are the Wind River Mountains and Granite Mountains (Sweetwater Arch) to
the north, the Uinta Mountains to the south, the Wyoming thrust belt to the west, and the Sierra Madre
Mountains and the Rawlins Uplift to the East. The Great Green River Basin is further subdivided into
sub basins as mentioned earlier by intrabasinal anticlines. The largest anticline occupies the central
portion of the basin and nearly separates the basin into equal east and west segments. There are also

Humanism In The Middle Ages Essay
Humanism is the belief that man has beauty, worth, and dignity. During the Middle Ages between 3rd
to the 13th century, the life and culture are primarily focused on the church and religion. However,
towards the beginning of the 14th century, the power of the church began to greatly decline. This
decline was the main reason for the development of humanism. As people become less interested
about God, the afterlife, and the saints. They become more interested about themselves, their natural
world and here in now.
Many historians believe there are two main causes of this decline. The first one was the bubonic
plague. It was the Black Death in Europe that killed almost half of the population. As the plague
devastated and destroyed, the church was helpless to stop it. People then began to question spiritual ...

The Pros And Cons Of Offshore Drilling
Offshore drilling is a topic of extreme debate and argument and one of the most debated parts of that
is whether or not it benefits the economy in the U.S. One of the first things to note is that stopping
offshore drilling could potentially damage the U.S. economy, and therefore how much energy we can
overall use. According to Mason, Joseph R., author of, The Oil Industry Supports Many Louisiana and
Gulf Region Economies , we can see the statement, the moratorium would produce broad economic
losses within the Gulf and throughout the nation as a whole . We can gather, from this, that ceasing
offshore drilling/offshore oil production, could potentially harm the U.S. economy, and as I said

Those that argue against the statement that offshore drilling benefits the economy say that the
potential damage from the BP blowout had the costs estimated at $2.2 billion with the highest possible

from the text, it s clear that offshore drilling can really hurt the economy through damaging the
environment, and that it is not a sound decision to continue because of the chance of a spill. The
second point they argue against is whether or not offshore drilling really lowers energy prices in the
U.S. From the article written by Hassett, Kevin A., titled Offshore Drilling Will Lower Energy Prices ,
a quote from President Barrack Obama is referenced, Offshore drilling would not lower gas prices

believes that energy prices will not lower because of offshore drilling even in the future. The third and

How Did Catholics Pose A Significant Threat In England
There is much historical debate as to whether Catholics posed a significant threat in England. Duffy
has found through the study of wills that Catholic views were still seen in a large section of the
population. However, Doran suggests that long and relentless government persecutions forced many
Catholics from their faith. This would indicate that there is uncertainty as to the Catholic threat
domestically and Murphy would certainly argue that due to the increasingly hostile situation in Europe
that the bigger Catholic threat came from abroad. When the Elizabethan Church Settlement was
created Elizabeth attempted to return religious policy to the way it had been at the end of Henry VIII s
reign; there is also an indication the settlement was driven by a need for political expediency.
Elizabeth herself is seen by historians such as C Haigh as a sincere and committed protestant due to
her upbringing; however, she recognised that a large population of England was still Catholic ... Show

of the Spanish Armada, which Philip of Spain viewed as a crusade and thought would lead to a full

Also, many Catholics saw Elizabeth as the rightful Queen and many of these plots were regarded with

The first course is normally pasta or some form of rice or soup. The second course is their main course
and is made up of protein like meat or fish with a healthy side like vegetables. The side dish,
vegetables, can as well for some people be considered their main dish. The last course, which is the
best part but not always healthy, is dessert.
One of the staples of the Italian diet are tomatoes because they are packed with vitamins A C,
potassium and folate. Another staple is olive oil and extra virgin olive oil which are high in
monounsaturated fat, antioxidants and are linked to heart health. Garlic is a big staple in their diet due
to its flavor dimension addition to any dish such as homemade salad dressings and tomato sauce. As
well as garlic studies show it may lower stomach, throat and skin cancers. Whole grains pastas and

Lean Software Development and Enhancing Software...
Lean Software Development and Enhancing Software Development Projects Introduction Lean
Software Development is essentially a transformation of lean manufacturing and IT principles and is a
branch of agile development framework. The core concept here being eliminating waste. At the same
time CMMI is a capability maturity model integration which is a process improvement technique that
is used to bring about an improvement in a project, process or the entire organization for that matter.
In this paper, we will first start, first, the background of lean will be explored i.e., Agile and CMMI.
After that, how Lean and CMMI, although two techniques for an entirely different purpose could still

Agile methods also help teams meet the industry standards with less overheads than other software
development methodologies because of the timeboxed iterations and the critical benefit here is that the
entire project can easily adapt to even radical changes with much less costs. Whereas on the other
then, a CMMI or capability maturity model integration for development is a particular type of process
improvement maturity model for development of products and services which are developed by
software engineering institute or SEI. Capability Maturity Model integration intention is actually not
to impose a list of practices on the organization and similarly its intention is neither to apply as a
standard so that every other organization ends up complying it. It is something rather different and
specific, if it s used appropriately, CMMI is meant to help locate very specific areas where the change
in the organization can provide some greatest value in their processes, projects and the organization
overall based on the business s objectives. Before understanding how the conjunction between Lean
and CMMI could work it s important to understand how do they differ fundamentally i.e., how CMMI
and Agile differs. CMMI evaluates the organization as a single and whole entity and its development
processes. In comparison, the agile method is actually a single development process. This means that
both of the concepts are fundamentally different and not comparable by

Bilingual Is The New Black
Bilingual is the New Black
Today we live in an increasingly globalized world. In the United States alone over 60 million people
speak a language other than English when at home (Speaking in Tongues). While most schools require
at least two year of foreign language, this is not really enough to familiarize yourself with a language.
It would not only be in the students best interest to do this, but also the schools as it increases
academic achievement. It also improves your cognitive functions and benefits society. All of these
factors led me to this conclusion: everyone should take at least four years worth of foreign language
classes. Many Americans argue that because English is quickly becoming the global language,
Americans should not have to learn other languages. They are operating under the following
pretenses: there wouldn t possibly be anyone we would want to communicate with that does not speak
English already, other countries should teach their citizens a second language (English) so that they
can communicate with us, and learning another language is only beneficially if it directly influences
us gaining more opportunities. These biases are misguided. Learning another language will benefit
you for your entire life. It will help you through school, improve your mind permanently, and create
opportunities for you and society. Don t conform to the American stereotype. Trust me, it is worth

The Importance Of Equal Employment Opportunity
Equal employment opportunity is vital and considered important to be practiced in organization. If
employees in their jobs perceived that they have the same opportunity they in turn will have lower
intention to leave the organization (Konovsky, 1989). If an organization may offers its employee equal
opportunity and also equal benefits for recognizing their efforts, employee in return for this
opportunity and benefits will become highly committed to the organization and develops in them a
sense of obligation to reciprocate to the organization. It helps in reducing the turnover intentions in the
organization among employees (Tansky Cohen, 2001). For example, provide equal opportunity for
salary growth and training. There was another researcher illustrating main emphasize in an
organization should be on improving the issues related to fair hiring practices, fair workload
distribution and enhancing equal opportunities in career development or promotion in order to reduce
turnover intentions (Chambers, 2008).
According to Poon (2004), there are reported results which show that employees intentions to quit will
be affected due to lack of equal employment opportunities in the organization. Moreover, it is found
that an employee in the work place who feels that an organization provide equal employment
opportunity by showing support in terms of caring or his or her well being will be motivated to stay
with that organization (Godfrey, 2010).

Barbie, The Soulless Blonde Bombshell That Brainwashes Children
Barbie is the controversial toy every big news outlet loves to poke and prod about. Barbie was created
in 1959 after Ruth Handler observed her daughter, Barbara, playing with paper dolls. Ruth
immediately recognized that experimenting with the future from a safe distance through pretend play
was an important part of growing up. Even though some may be intimidated by Barbie s seemingly
perfect, tanned, thin body, Barbie is only a doll; In the end, she is just a hunk of plastic.
Other body types are represented in the media, as well as a wide selection of other dolls to choose
from; Lammily dolls, Fulla dolls, and many other alternatives to Barbie. When your four year old
child watches one of many trademark Barbie movies, they aren t thinking ... Show more content on

It s what they know best. Another thing they know best is the art of forgiveness, inquiry, and total,
complete worship of the bigger human that birthed them. Now, if a parent goes around spewing about
the doll s real life measurements , which happen to be 5 9 tall, a 39 bust, a 18 waist, 33 hips and a size
3 shoe, then the child is going to look twice and question the doll. Only an adult would look at a toy s
body and be angry about it. Moving on.
Barbie s got a bad reputation. All that is really focused on is her looks. This defeats the purpose of the
entire concept of the doll herself, and it goes to show just how women (even of the rubber/plastic type)
are portrayed in the public eye. Actions figures aren t exactly only looked at for their rock hard abs
and meaty arms, but seen for their strength, courage, and all around manliness. This brings us to a
double standard, but that s another essay topic in

The Characteristics Of Gothicism In Wieland, By Charles...
For years, many have felt a sense of intrigue and fascination when it comes to the paranormal.
Thousands of films, books, and television shows are based upon the premise of the supernatural and
eerie. In his novel, Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown presents a work that has chilled the spines of
readers for over 200 years. Brown presented readers of the early nation a new genre of entertainment
called Gothicism which was divergent from the literature of the past. With the new, emerging genre,
Charles Brocken Brown provided a new perspective for readers to view characters, plot and setting.
Instead of taking the safe route, and creating a set of God fearing characters that always do the right
thing, Brown diverged from the reason and logic of Enlightenment thinkers of the 18th century and
produced a story that shied away from rationality. In his novel Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown
created a world that displayed characteristics of Gothicism as well as anti Enlightenment thinking.
The early nation had been exposed to many classical and rigid writers who wrote to inform rather than
to entertain. When Brown emerged as the first Gothic American novelist, he as well as many other
early American authors wrote using devices such as moralization in order to upgrade fiction (Nutter
lecture). Hugh Holman explains that writers who did not hold themselves to the standard of classical
thinking wrote in an unknown and foreign nature. Romantics regarded Gothicism to be foreign, ...and

Private Prisons Are The Operation Of A Prison
The need of private detainment facilities has immediately created all through numerous years. Private
jails are the operation of a jail by a privately owned business under contract with a nearby, state, or
potentially central government, frequently as a revenue driven business. With the gigantic
development inside the prison masses coming to fruition because of the War on Drugs and extended
usage of confinement, correctional facility clog and expanding costs ended up being logically dubious
for neighborhood, state, and focal governments. With this expanding criminal equity framework,
private business interests saw an open entryway for improvement, and thusly, private part nearness in
penitentiaries moved from the direct contracting of organizations to contracting for the aggregate
organization and operation of entire confinement offices. Close by, the development and increment of
private detainment facilities as a few extra associations there are upsides and downsides. On August
eighteenth, 2016 The United States Justice Department declared, that it wanted to end its utilization of
private jails after authorities finished up the offices are both less sheltered and less successful at giving

Persuasive Essay On Gmo Farming
Genetically modified farming has become more of an issue in the agriculture and nutrition worlds over
the past ten years. The big question is, do the benefits of GMO farming outweigh the losses. GMO
corporations like Monsanto make business much harder for independent farmers, due to the cost
difference and efficiency of GMO farming, as well as other reasons. GMO farming can also save
funds and provide produce to a larger range of people. Genetically modified agriculture has an
especially strong effect on Hawaii state farmers. While there are benefits to GMO farming, there are
also many downsides.
Extra environmental damage occurs from GMO farming when compared to small scale farms. It takes
the same amount of time to grow and the same amount of money. GMO foods coincide with higher
food allergy levels in the population. Large GMO corporations cause small independent farmers to go
bankrupt or get sued for accidental seed crossing. There are many downsides to GMO farming, but it
can also be useful, genetic modifications can often provide a larger quantity of food to a ... Show more

GMO seeds often have vitamins and minerals added into them, supplying very necessary nutrients that
could be otherwise inaccessible to a portion of the population. Plants can also be genetically modified
to provide vaccines and proteins through pharming (pharmaceutical farming). GMO plants also often
have a longer shelf life, resulting in more time for transport and less food wasted. This process can
also have environmental benefits such as reduced pollution, erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions.
GMO plants and animals also need less machinery, time, and land, resulting in enhanced productivity.
The GMO debate is especially an issue in Hawaii, the remoteness of the islands would seem to make it

Examples Of Logical Fallacies In Advertising
Advertisements are everywhere, on television, radio, social media, billboards, magazines, and even on
yearbooks. On the other hand, would it not be nice if every advertisement an individual saw, read, or
heard were actually true? Like using Axe body spray really did attract women or eating Snickers really
made one satisfied in seconds? Yet, most of the times the advertisements that seem too good to be true,
actually are. In fact, many ads are only slightly true and instead filled with many common errors in
reasoning, known as logical fallacies, a sneaky marketing technique many companies use to trick a
consumer into giving them their undivided attention and money. In fact, one well known company for
using logical fallacies in their advertisements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plain folk is the marketing strategy where advertisers portray a person like a well known celebrity like
Lindsey Lohan as a person who is in fact, normal or an everyday Joe. For instance, Lohan explains
that even though she is a singer and actress she is just like anyone else, a person who struggles with
having unclear, bumpy, and acne prone skin stating, I m a normal person and I do get zits and I m not
happy when I do so I like to try and find anything that s preventative towards it and Proactiv has done
that for me. By promoting a person, in this case as Lindsay Lohan, a person who suffers from the
same problems as acne, like anyone else, people gain trust and feel comforted, resulting in the
individual being more open and willing to buy a product. Then again Proactiv is not the only company
that has used and uses logical fallacies in their advertisements to trick people into buying their
products. In fact, if one were to close enough to the advertisements and commercials that are around
them, they would start to see how life is filled with false statements, logical fallacies, and ultimately
scams. Perhaps, people will think twice and be more cautious when buying a product, knowing that in
the end they might just be wasting their

a risk taking entrepreneur that emphasizes the fun in every activity he is driving the Virgin group into.
Virgin s best known operations are probably air travel (the Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Express airlines)
and music stores (Virgin Megastores), but they are also involved in trains, finance, internet services,
soft drinks, mobile phones, cars, wines, publishing, and bridal wear to name but a few. Although

seeking to understand the overall Virgin strategy, critical success factors and why specific Virgin
companies were launched. Also of interest are some of Virgin s rare failures and apparent present
difficulties. The choice of Virgin as a target company presents additional challenges since it is not a

On Being Brought To America By Phillis Wheatley

ENG 241
4 June 2015
Gratitude of Ash Phillis Wheatley drew attention in the 18thcentury for being a black slave, and a
child prodigy who was able to write poems and songs. She was born in Gambia, Africa, and brought to
Boston as a slave when she was a child, and became slave and companion to John Wheatley s wife. As
she grew older, John Wheatley s wife viewed her as a feeble and brilliant girl who deserves to be
educated and felt great affection toward her. Therefore, Susanna Wheatley s daughters taught Phillis
how to read and write, so she delivered her honest opinions through her writings (Baym and Levine
763). Then she became the first African American writer to publish a book of poetry while other slaves
were forbidden to learn how to read and write. Her ability to write and read gave her freedom of
expression and enabled her to become a free woman. Her literacy influenced her surroundings in
numerous ways. She was acknowledged by many people for her great poetical talents ( Phillis
Wheatley, the First para 3). In the poem On Being Brought from Africa to America, Phillis Wheatley
appeals to ethos and pathos, uses suitable diction and a metaphor to demonstrate that the
discrimination of Africans is barbarous, and encourages people to not judge by physical
characteristics, but consider innate qualities. Wheatley conveys her message through credibility as a
young slave by sharing her experience.

authors used multiple assessment tools, which included Bergen Social media Addiction Scale. This
scale is anchored in general addiction theory, and operationalizes social media addiction according to
six basic addiction symptoms which include salience, conflict, mood modification, withdrawal,
tolerance, and relapse. To assess sub clinical narcissism, the authors used the Narcissistic Personality

narcissistic the individual is. Furthermore, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale was used to assess the levels
of self esteem in which statements are rated on a 4 point Likert scale ranging from Strongly agree (0)

results demonstrated the positive and significant correlations between addictive use of social media

The Natural History Of Social Problems
In America, there exists issues that affect the society at large, such as unemployment, abortion, racism,
gun control, and even terrorism. These social problems are viewed by a part of society as social
conditions or pattern of behaviors that are harmful to members of society and in need of a solution.
Many people in America lack the sociological imagination, as the media play a big role in shaping
their perspectives on certain matters whereby the media uses narrow casting to only show one
perspective. It is therefore important to note that through the sociological perspective, one is able to
view how broader social forces influence one s life. Throughout history, it has been noted that social
problems are inevitable. This means that, as the society changes so do social problems and vice versa.
In studying the natural history of social problems, it is important to note that social problems pass
through: pressures for change, crafting an official response, reacting to the official response and
pursuit of alternative strategies which are overlapping stages. In the history of America, there have
been various social issues that have come about into existence. Some of the issues have been
supported by radical movements while some of the social problems have failed in their potential due
to lack of support. In the cycle of a social problem, the initial step pressures for change, is brought
about by the realization of the problem itself. Most people are made aware of social

The Role Of Chemical Reactions And Electricity And Centers...
Electrochemistry, a branch of physical chemistry, is the study of the relationship between chemical
reactions and electricity and centers upon the interrelation of chemical energy and electrical energy.
Contributing to such crucial technological developments as the invention of batteries and fuel cells,
corrosion protection and the study of metallurgy, electrochemistry is credited with a great deal of real
life applications and has had widespread impact on mankind. One of the most common and
fundamental applications of electrochemistry is producing an electric current from a spontaneous
redox reaction through the help of a device called the electrochemical cell. For example, if zinc metal
is dropped into an aqueous solution of copper ion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The electrode placed with the reducing agent is called anode, while the one placed with the oxidizing
agent is called cathode. In this case, a strip of zinc metal should be placed in a solution of zinc nitrate
and a strip of copper metal should be placed with copper nitrate. As the anode frees electrons where
oxidation takes place, the electrons enter an electricity conducting wire and travel to the cathode
where reduction takes place, thereby creating electrical energy. In the meantime of this process, a
positive charge and a negative charge accumulate in the oxidation and reduction vessel respectively,
due to the transfer of electrons. Since electrons do not have a propensity to travel from a positively
charged region to a negatively charged region, a salt bridge containing a cation and an anion that do
not play a role in the redox reaction, is required to keep this system operating. An U shaped tube
connecting the vessels, the salt bridge releases its cations to the reduction vessel and its anions to the
oxidation vessel to maintain the charge neutral. As scientific as this explanation may seem, battery, a
ubiquitous product, is modeled after this cell system. A common example of an electrochemical cell is
a standard 1.5 volt battery meant for consumer use .[ Electrochemistry. Wikipedia. Accessed January

Summary Of Respecting The Holocaust By Howard Zinn
In Respecting the Holocaust by Howard Zinn, he argues against the uniqueness of the Jewish
Holocaust . In his essay, he provides positive and critical responses to the significance of the
Holocaust. First, he starts by recalling when I was teaching in Boston University, I was asked by a
Jewish group to give a talk on the Holocaust, but he chooses to recall events that happened in
America. He elaborates on the death of hundreds of thousands of peasants in Guatemala and El
Salvador. Zinn s point is to not focus on the Holocaust only, but enlarge the Holocaust to also include
other events that happen in other parts of the world. He concludes his argument by stating that what
happened to the Jews is only unique in its details, but it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By increasing our knowledge about other events that happen around the world, we learn more about
other traditions and increase diversity without any discrimination in favor of any race, culture, or
religion. For example, in the website (www.bbc.co.uk), France had many occurring attacks by Muslim
extremists and terrorists in the last month because of differences in ideologies and beliefs. Some of
these attacks occurred in the Bataclan concert hall, Casa Nostra pizza restaurant, and outside of the
Stade de France soccer stadium. Some attackers were using guns and shooting people while suicide
bombers took innocent lives with them. Doing so, terrorists were thinking that killing people is
justified according to their beliefs (www.bbc.co.uk). These terrorists believe that anyone who does not
agree with their beliefs or customs should be discriminated against and killed. I think that what
happened in France was caused by the different ideologies and close mindedness toward other
traditions and beliefs. The differences in ideologies that were the main causes for the attack on France
share the same characteristics with the Holocaust in which both events are a result of different
ideologies and un approval of other beliefs or customs. Therefore, I think that what occurred in France
and is still happening in other parts of the world should receive the same importance as the Holocaust.
Zinn in his essay (Respecting the Holocaust) agrees that we should acknowledge that humankind is all
one, and there is no difference between colors, nationality, or religion and that all humans deserve
equal rights which are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As a result of considering
other events as well as the Holocaust, there will be more cultural integration without the base for
discrimination against race, culture or religion as what happened during the Holocaust or

Summary Of A Sunrise On The Veld And At The Pitt Rivers
The short stories, A Sunrise on the Veld and At the Pitt Rivers , have nothing in common if you
analyze them on a shallow literature level. A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing, highlights some of
the reasons why life is so valuable. Lessing hints her readers that this short story is set somewhere in
the desert by, ... the flesh of his soles contracted on the chilled earth, and his legs began to ache with
cold... He slung the shoes over his shoulder... they would be necessary when the ground became too
hot to bear, (Lessing, pg. 1212). Most deserts get heated by the sun by day, but loses the heat at night.
The boy starts hunting, at first, but then is distracted by a wounded buck. Seeing this buck suffer,
depicts him, especially sad. A boy is also the protagonist in At the Pitt Rivers by Penelope Lively. This
boy spends his time in a museum, observing people and writing poems as the time passes. He keeps
track of a couple he sees at the museum. The couple catches his attention because they are not his
ideal of what a couple should look like. If a kindergartener reads these two short stories, he/she would
find nothing in common with the stories. But, if the reader has the ability to analyze the text in more
depth, he/she would find that they are more similar than the kindergartener would think.
As an advanced reader, a comparison that is prevalent in both stories is, society s thinking of the ideal

Discuss The Differences Between The Chesapeake And New...
Starting in the 1600 s, the English began immigrating to the New World. While the settlers from both
the Chesapeake and New England colonies were originally exposed to the same religion within the
Anglican Church, as well as primarily the same intention within the government system, the colonies
differed in how they would manage their societies once they were settled in the New World. The
Northern New England areas economy was built upon rocks. Their soil was very rocky, farming was
much harder than in chesapeake. The people who settled in this colony were families not single white
men who were to be indentured slaves. These factors created the New England colonies. As far as the
social aspect of the two colonies, there were significant differences in how the colonies were
populated. New England came over with big families which they would use to begin small
communities. The relationships that were already built between these settlers would go to benefit them
and provide the means to creating the society in an organized and well thought out manner. When you
are able to develop and rely on ones you trust making a wholesome community becomes easier, the
supplies, the labor needed to be done and issues that need to be dealt with come at a faster pass with a

The Death of Creative Power in Sonnet 73 Essay
The Death of Creative Power in Sonnet 73
Most of the 127 sonnets Shakespeare wrote to one of his close male friends are united by the theme of
the overwhelming, destructive power of time, and the counterbalancing power of love and poetry to
create and preserve beauty. Sonnet 73 is no different, but it does present an intriguing twist on this
theme. Most of these sonnets address the youth and beauty of his male friend, as well as poetry s
power to immortalize them, but number 73 addresses the author s own mortality and the friend s love
for him. Also, subtly woven into this turning inward is a lament that the creative vitality represented
by the poems themselves is fading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

3). This is a straightforward complaint that, like autumn, the poet is moving gradually into old age,
with the winter of death right around the corner. But Shakespeare s description of the tree limbs in
their bare autumn dress is key to the whole poem. He calls them Bare ruined choirs, where late the
sweet birds sang. The barren tree branches are the choir, or the place where the choir sang. But
the sweet birds are no longer there. Given that the entire sequence of poems is a sequence of songs,
Shakespeare s lament can be seen as a lament that the songs themselves, the poems, will cease. He
was one of the sweet birds, or his poems were. At his death, no longer will there be any new songs to
praise his friend.
The next quatrain lapses into a more mundane metaphor. The seeming proximity of sleep and death
has long been a subject of English poetry. One noteworthy aspect of the metaphor here, though, is that
Shakespeare doesn t use death to meditate on the melancholy aspect of sleep, but uses sleep to
speculate on the restful aspect of death. The image which opens the quatrain, the sunset, is standard;
his life is at the point of fading into darkness. But the sleep which night brings is not presented too
fearfully here, because night brings Death s second self that seals up all in

Failure Of Failure After Failure
As my first semester of college is coming to an end, I would like to reflect on my experience here
within the Honors 120 and 121 class on Failure and the Question Wheel. I chose this class on failure
because I have always held myself to such high standards that I hoped to be able to find a way to
accept failure in some instances. Within our first week in class, we made claims about failure. My
favorite claim was that every failure is in some way a success. Although this claim was not very
debatable and incredibly generic, I was able to really let my mind explore what it was trying to say.
Throughout the semester I experienced failure after failure, but that allowed me to see that success can
still be achieved within failures. One major failure I experienced throughout the entire semester was
my failure to speak up in class. In the beginning of the school year I failed to speak up mainly because
I was shy and being around all new people whom I did not know made me feel very anxious. I thought
that my anxiety about this class would lessen over time as I got to know my fellow classmates.
However, as time went on I realized that while a majority of my classmates share these anxious
feelings with me, the other students that had been speaking up are very strong willed and can be
judgmental at times. I then realized that I was scared to speak up in class because I feared that my
ideas were not deep enough or that the normal speakers would think I was stupid. I feared

The Expansion Of Foreign Aid
In the denotation of foreign aid takes many definitions in different literature, but as Tarp provided it is
government transfers from donor countries to under developed or poor countries. That is intended for
promoting development and reducing poverty, although there may be other aims of giving aid. As
there are major trend of foreign aid and most reasonable issues that foreign aid fluctuated in different
years, therefore the paper will look back the trend of foreign aid and it s changes in globally that has
started from 1940s one of the major trend of foreign aid that happened in the world was European
recovery programs known as marshal plan which its main aim was assistance from United states of
America to recover Europe.
Also the paper will focus on how 1980 s oil shocks changed economic nature as well as how
multilateral support increased in 1970 s there were also other foreign aid trends cited in this paper as
the end of Berlin wall and downfall of soviet union and in that time aid has really peaked in real terms
from 1974 to the final of the Cold War as some countries attained greatly UN ODA target of 0.7% of
national income (OECD, 2011)
As the same time second part of this question will discuss reasons why the donor countries grant
bilateral aid to poor and developing countries, rather than financial crises, reducing poverty, recovery
procedures and economic stability which are common but some scholars like (Lumsdaine, 1993)
believes that aid are given not only

Analysis Of The Film Gibber Eidolon
Greetings from the Abyss. The name s Charles Chadwick, and for the last 7 years I have poured
thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of labor into my film Gibber Eidolon. The film is shot
entirely on black and white Super8 film, and uses a myriad of techniques. From hand painted film, to
video generation loss, to hand processing, to found footage and traditionally shot sequences.
The title of the film roughly translates to Babbling Ghost. Babbling from fear or shock. The Gibber
Eidolon is a being that is not quite there because it is suffused with terror. Its perspective is of diffused
chaos.
Concretely, the film is a tour of various San Francisco Bay Area graveyards; almost all of them have
residents going back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Also, the film contains live footage of historic
computer technology, both operational and not. Found footage/archival footage in this same vein is
used as well, in addition to appropriated visual material whose subject matter differs...used mainly for
metaphoric illustration. The work contains footage shot over the last 15 years, as well as found
footage acquired over a period of roughly 13 years.
This movie is first and foremost diaristic. It contains my life: the places I ve been and the way I ve
responded to them, and the ideas I ve had along the way. It is a work of spirit.
The film also is a collaboration between myself and my dear friend Matthew Bambas, who I ve been
working with both on films and music for nearly

The Creation Of The Make-A-Wish Foundation
The average life expectancy rate in the U.S. is 78, but some people don t get this long to live. The
Make A Wish Foundation was created in 1980 to help sick children s wishes come true. First, a child
has to be recommended to Make A Wish in order to have their wish granted. Next, the child s
physician has to test if the child is eligible to be a part of the organization. Lastly, the child chooses
their wish and informs the foundation, so Make A Wish can create the child s special dream for them.
There are many other organizations that help others and deserve recognition, but the Make A Wish
Foundation outranks the others because of the charity s actions. The Make A Wish Foundation
continues to raise the expectations of morality in the world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although Make A Wish is an extraordinary organization, there are many other foundations that pride
themselves on their morality and humanity and deserve recognition. Make A Wish has helped an
abundance of children and will forever do so because the organization believes in humanity and wants
to give back to sick children who deserve a special wish. The Make A Wish foundation needs to
receive a lot more attention, so that more donations are given that can help save children. Some people
do not get to live as long as others, so it s up to the Make A Wish Foundation to make the most of their
lives mean something, for the time

  • 4. The Pont Du Gard In Nimes From 20-16 BCE, And The Pantheon Roman Architecture has always been embraced deeply due to the simplicity and the aesthetic sensation it communicates. However, the actual reason it is truly recognized, is by its very structured and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts, design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how each design satisfies its intended purpose and large exterior and interior spaces. There are many important Roman designs, but the two designs that demonstrate the Roman design methodology is the Pont du Gard in Nimes from 20 16 BCE and The Pantheon from 125 A.D. To understand, how these designs emphasized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Pantheon, the primary materials used in the Pantheon include brick, granite, concrete, volcanic rock. The importance of concrete in this designed is it helped create the so famous dome in the Pantheon. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The dome has a circular oculus in the middle which emits light. The heavy dome is held by concrete foundations and is made of concrete which demonstrates how they mastered concrete so greatly. According to (Encyclopedia Britannica), the dome measures about 142 feet in diameter and has a rising height of 71 feet above its base. (The dome also is said to have a brick faced walls inside the design for support. The design also has arches and vaults that serve as a structural load. The arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression to the dome. This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very crucial to understanding why the Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial aspect in this design because vaults are a series of arches that create a structural load. The arches helped created compression between the domes and the vaults which were in the bottom of the pantheon help create compression with the arches making the dome very strong. • 5. Essay on Shelby Foote s Shiloh Shelby Foote s Shiloh In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier s mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author s vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters accessable, the author just doesn t have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on the battle and what it means even for the individual characters he has presented. I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn t really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment something more like Tom Wicker s Unto This Hour. That s just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can t help it if I just want more. Fans of Shelby Foote s massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the work s biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote s earlier novel about the battle of Shiloh. I couldn t help thinking, however, that Foote s real calling is as historian and commentator, and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark. The TANF program became a part of the national welfare reform which puts a stop to women with children being entitled to an endless amount of cash benefits. In the following paper I intend to give clear and succinct information on how oil shale was deposited in the Greater Green River Basin, what it is made of, what was the maturation history of the shale, how the oil is recovered from very impermeable sedimentary units, how economics will play a role in its future as a reliable energy source, as well as the environmental impact of oil production in the basin. Structure of the Greater Green River Basin The Greater Green River Basin is a basin located in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The mountains that surround the basin are the Wind River Mountains and Granite Mountains (Sweetwater Arch) to the north, the Uinta Mountains to the south, the Wyoming thrust belt to the west, and the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Rawlins Uplift to the East. During the Middle Ages between 3rd to the 13th century, the life and culture are primarily focused on the church and religion. However, towards the beginning of the 14th century, the power of the church began to greatly decline. This decline was the main reason for the development of humanism. As people become less interested about God, the afterlife, and the saints. They become more interested about themselves, their natural world and here in now. According to Mason, Joseph R., author of, The Oil Industry Supports Many Louisiana and Gulf Region Economies , we can see the statement, the moratorium would produce broad economic losses within the Gulf and throughout the nation as a whole . Duffy has found through the study of wills that Catholic views were still seen in a large section of the population. However, Doran suggests that long and relentless government persecutions forced many Catholics from their faith. This would indicate that there is uncertainty as to the Catholic threat domestically and Murphy would certainly argue that due to the increasingly hostile situation in Europe that the bigger Catholic threat came from abroad. When the Elizabethan Church Settlement was created Elizabeth attempted to return religious policy to the way it had been at the end of Henry VIII s reign; there is also an indication the settlement was driven by a need for political expediency. Thousands of films, books, and television shows are based upon the premise of the supernatural and eerie. In his novel, Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown presents a work that has chilled the spines of readers for over 200 years. Brown presented readers of the early nation a new genre of entertainment called Gothicism which was divergent from the literature of the past. With the new, emerging genre, Charles Brocken Brown provided a new perspective for readers to view characters, plot and setting. Instead of taking the safe route, and creating a set of God fearing characters that always do the right thing, Brown diverged from the reason and logic of Enlightenment thinkers of the 18th century and produced a story that shied away from rationality. In his novel Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown created a world that displayed characteristics of Gothicism as well as anti Enlightenment thinking. The early nation had been exposed to many classical and rigid writers who wrote to inform rather than to entertain. When Brown emerged as the first Gothic American novelist, he as well as many other early American authors wrote using devices such as moralization in order to upgrade fiction (Nutter lecture). • 32. The Role Of Chemical Reactions And Electricity And Centers... Electrochemistry, a branch of physical chemistry, is the study of the relationship between chemical reactions and electricity and centers upon the interrelation of chemical energy and electrical energy. Contributing to such crucial technological developments as the invention of batteries and fuel cells, corrosion protection and the study of metallurgy, electrochemistry is credited with a great deal of real life applications and has had widespread impact on mankind. One of the most common and fundamental applications of electrochemistry is producing an electric current from a spontaneous redox reaction through the help of a device called the electrochemical cell. For example, if zinc metal is dropped into an aqueous solution of copper ion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The electrode placed with the reducing agent is called anode, while the one placed with the oxidizing agent is called cathode. In this case, a strip of zinc metal should be placed in a solution of zinc nitrate and a strip of copper metal should be placed with copper nitrate. As the anode frees electrons where oxidation takes place, the electrons enter an electricity conducting wire and travel to the cathode where reduction takes place, thereby creating electrical energy. In the meantime of this process, a positive charge and a negative charge accumulate in the oxidation and reduction vessel respectively, due to the transfer of electrons. Since electrons do not have a propensity to travel from a positively charged region to a negatively charged region, a salt bridge containing a cation and an anion that do not play a role in the redox reaction, is required to keep this system operating. An U shaped tube connecting the vessels, the salt bridge releases its cations to the reduction vessel and its anions to the oxidation vessel to maintain the charge neutral. As scientific as this explanation may seem, battery, a ubiquitous product, is modeled after this cell system. A common example of an electrochemical cell is a standard 1.5 volt battery meant for consumer use .[ Electrochemistry. Wikipedia. Accessed January 21, 2016. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Summary Of Respecting The Holocaust By Howard Zinn In Respecting the Holocaust by Howard Zinn, he argues against the uniqueness of the Jewish Holocaust . In his essay, he provides positive and critical responses to the significance of the Holocaust. First, he starts by recalling when I was teaching in Boston University, I was asked by a Jewish group to give a talk on the Holocaust, but he chooses to recall events that happened in America. He elaborates on the death of hundreds of thousands of peasants in Guatemala and El Salvador. Zinn s point is to not focus on the Holocaust only, but enlarge the Holocaust to also include other events that happen in other parts of the world. He concludes his argument by stating that what happened to the Jews is only unique in its details, but it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By increasing our knowledge about other events that happen around the world, we learn more about other traditions and increase diversity without any discrimination in favor of any race, culture, or religion. For example, in the website (www.bbc.co.uk), France had many occurring attacks by Muslim extremists and terrorists in the last month because of differences in ideologies and beliefs. Some of these attacks occurred in the Bataclan concert hall, Casa Nostra pizza restaurant, and outside of the Stade de France soccer stadium. Some attackers were using guns and shooting people while suicide bombers took innocent lives with them. Doing so, terrorists were thinking that killing people is justified according to their beliefs (www.bbc.co.uk). These terrorists believe that anyone who does not agree with their beliefs or customs should be discriminated against and killed. I think that what happened in France was caused by the different ideologies and close mindedness toward other traditions and beliefs. The differences in ideologies that were the main causes for the attack on France share the same characteristics with the Holocaust in which both events are a result of different ideologies and un approval of other beliefs or customs. Therefore, I think that what occurred in France and is still happening in other parts of the world should receive the same importance as the Holocaust. Zinn in his essay (Respecting the Holocaust) agrees that we should acknowledge that humankind is all one, and there is no difference between colors, nationality, or religion and that all humans deserve equal rights which are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As a result of considering other events as well as the Holocaust, there will be more cultural integration without the base for discrimination against race, culture or religion as what happened during the Holocaust or ... • 35. Summary Of A Sunrise On The Veld And At The Pitt Rivers The short stories, A Sunrise on the Veld and At the Pitt Rivers , have nothing in common if you analyze them on a shallow literature level. A Sunrise on the Veld by Doris Lessing, highlights some of the reasons why life is so valuable. Lessing hints her readers that this short story is set somewhere in the desert by, ... the flesh of his soles contracted on the chilled earth, and his legs began to ache with cold... He slung the shoes over his shoulder... they would be necessary when the ground became too hot to bear, (Lessing, pg. 1212). Most deserts get heated by the sun by day, but loses the heat at night. The boy starts hunting, at first, but then is distracted by a wounded buck. Seeing this buck suffer, depicts him, especially sad. A boy is also the protagonist in At the Pitt Rivers by Penelope Lively. This boy spends his time in a museum, observing people and writing poems as the time passes. He keeps track of a couple he sees at the museum. The couple catches his attention because they are not his ideal of what a couple should look like. If a kindergartener reads these two short stories, he/she would find nothing in common with the stories. But, if the reader has the ability to analyze the text in more depth, he/she would find that they are more similar than the kindergartener would think. • 36. Discuss The Differences Between The Chesapeake And New... Starting in the 1600 s, the English began immigrating to the New World. While the settlers from both the Chesapeake and New England colonies were originally exposed to the same religion within the Anglican Church, as well as primarily the same intention within the government system, the colonies differed in how they would manage their societies once they were settled in the New World. The Northern New England areas economy was built upon rocks. Their soil was very rocky, farming was much harder than in chesapeake. The people who settled in this colony were families not single white men who were to be indentured slaves. These factors created the New England colonies. As far as the social aspect of the two colonies, there were significant differences in how the colonies were populated. New England came over with big families which they would use to begin small communities. The relationships that were already built between these settlers would go to benefit them and provide the means to creating the society in an organized and well thought out manner. When you are able to develop and rely on ones you trust making a wholesome community becomes easier, the supplies, the labor needed to be done and issues that need to be dealt with come at a faster pass with a trusted group of people (doc 1). • 37. The Death of Creative Power in Sonnet 73 Essay The Death of Creative Power in Sonnet 73 Most of the 127 sonnets Shakespeare wrote to one of his close male friends are united by the theme of the overwhelming, destructive power of time, and the counterbalancing power of love and poetry to create and preserve beauty. Sonnet 73 is no different, but it does present an intriguing twist on this theme. Most of these sonnets address the youth and beauty of his male friend, as well as poetry s power to immortalize them, but number 73 addresses the author s own mortality and the friend s love for him. Also, subtly woven into this turning inward is a lament that the creative vitality represented by the poems themselves is fading ... This is a straightforward complaint that, like autumn, the poet is moving gradually into old age, with the winter of death right around the corner. But Shakespeare s description of the tree limbs in their bare autumn dress is key to the whole poem. He calls them Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang. The barren tree branches are the choir, or the place where the choir sang. But the sweet birds are no longer there. Given that the entire sequence of poems is a sequence of songs, Shakespeare s lament can be seen as a lament that the songs themselves, the poems, will cease. He was one of the sweet birds, or his poems were. At his death, no longer will there be any new songs to praise his friend. The next quatrain lapses into a more mundane metaphor. The seeming proximity of sleep and death has long been a subject of English poetry. One noteworthy aspect of the metaphor here, though, is that Shakespeare doesn t use death to meditate on the melancholy aspect of sleep, but uses sleep to speculate on the restful aspect of death. The image which opens the quatrain, the sunset, is standard; his life is at the point of fading into darkness. But the sleep which night brings is not presented too fearfully here, because night brings Death s second self that seals up all in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Failure Of Failure After Failure As my first semester of college is coming to an end, I would like to reflect on my experience here within the Honors 120 and 121 class on Failure and the Question Wheel. I chose this class on failure because I have always held myself to such high standards that I hoped to be able to find a way to accept failure in some instances. Within our first week in class, we made claims about failure. My favorite claim was that every failure is in some way a success. Although this claim was not very debatable and incredibly generic, I was able to really let my mind explore what it was trying to say. Throughout the semester I experienced failure after failure, but that allowed me to see that success can still be achieved within failures. One major failure I experienced throughout the entire semester was my failure to speak up in class. In the beginning of the school year I failed to speak up mainly because I was shy and being around all new people whom I did not know made me feel very anxious. I thought that my anxiety about this class would lessen over time as I got to know my fellow classmates. However, as time went on I realized that while a majority of my classmates share these anxious feelings with me, the other students that had been speaking up are very strong willed and can be judgmental at times. I then realized that I was scared to speak up in class because I feared that my ideas were not deep enough or that the normal speakers would think I was stupid. I feared ...
