Synopsis Of The Novel Train On Pakistan By Khushwant...
The well known novel Train to Pakistan initiates study on theme of partition. This story opens the
phase of political hatred, violence and sectarianism in a brilliant and realistic way. Related to those
decisive or fateful days, which were brought by the British Raj followed by destruction, death and
deracination for the north of the subcontinent; Khushwant Singh refers to the fact that India might
have gained independence then, but the price they paid for it was Partition . The strength and the
power of unity were deliberately divided between the two nations. It depicts the pitiful tale of
individuals and communities suffered in the revolution of Partition. Tran to Pakistan illustrates the
agony suffered on both sides of the political boundaries India and Pakistan after the partition.
In general, partition uprooted the whole country and it is described as one of the deadliest experience
the natives ever had of leaving their belongings behind and adapting the idea of new land, which was
not theirs. The harrowing and spine chilling events of 1947 had shaken the faith of the people in the
innate human beings. It had driven them into the state of wonder over what man has made of man. To
Khushwant Singh, this was a period of great disillusionment and crisis of values, a distressing and
disintegrating period of his life. The belief he had cherished all his life was shattered. Giving strength
to his inner struggle and agony, he says: I had believed in the innate goodness

Health And Globalization s Impact On Food And People
Health and Globalization s Impact on Food and People
Globalization has profoundly affected the movement of people, food production and dietary habits.
Political instability throughout the world has negatively impacted public healthcare systems, already
strained by limited funding, increased urbanization, and the emergence of new and previously
eradicated diseases that are resistant to available treatments. This paper explores how increased global
travel and changes in food production, distribution and consumption are interconnected, effecting
health at a global level. The paper acknowledges that globalization has both positive and negative
impacts on global health; and argues that opportunities to improve global health are limited by the ...

A total of eleven conferences were held, leading to the Office of International d Hygiène publique
(OIHP) established in 1907 and ultimately to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO)
in 1948 (WHO, 2016).
Throughout this time the globalization of trade, the movement of people and the spread of infectious
disease has grown, exponentially since the end of WWII. Where ocean going ships once dominated,
air travel and cargo transportation has grown to have a profound impact on global health. The
International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that eight million people travel by air every
day, surpassing the three billion mark annually, and creating abundant opportunities for infected
travelers to spread disease and antimicrobial resistance, in route to and at their destinations. Added to
this, is the estimated fifty million tons of air cargo transported annually, playing host to vector borne
diseases that can now travel across the globe in a matter of hours (IATA, 2013; Knobler, Mahmoud,
Lemon, Pray, 2006).
As a carrier of disease, air transportation poses a serious threat to global health. Government
regulations and air transportation industry practices attempt to control or at least limit the
opportunities for spreading infectious disease by monitoring aircraft and performing routine
disinsection by applying insecticides inside cabins and cargo areas. Despite these

Lady Of Shalott Gender Roles
During the Victorian era many common themes are depicted throughout the writings of that time. One
of the more important theme is gender roles. The theme of gender roles is very prominent in The Lady
of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Gender roles are also very noticeable in Jane Eyre by Charlotte
Brontë. In Alfred Lord Tennyson s The Lady of Shalott, the theme of gender role is obvious. The Lady
of Shalott is stuck in a tower and has been there for a long time. She feels alone and isolated while she
watched the world around her. This poem shows how women may have felt trapped in relationships.
The Lady wanted to leave and be with Sir Lancelot but was trapped. This symbolizes how women
want to leave a bad relationship but they are

The Ballad Of The White Horse
In The Ballad of the White Horse by G. K. Chesterton one of the main characters is King Alfred of
England, the legendary savior of England from the invading Danes. The book is set in the ninth
century AD. He is accompanied in battle by Eldred, a Saxon farmer, as well as Mark, a Roman, and
Colan, a Celt. While Alfred originally feels despair over his efforts to drive away the Danes, the
Blessed Virgin Mary appears to him in a vision and tells him that he is to continue. G. K. Chesterton
named the book after a symbol in England, a white horse cut out chalk that must constantly be cleaned
of encroaching weeds. To him, it symbolizes Christianity s struggle against eroding pagan forces. The
ballad questions and discusses the opposing worldviews ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One group of Danes, represented by Harold, went into battle and conquered in the hopes of gaining
earthly pleasures, without regard for others. Another group, represented by Elf, kept alive the old tales
of the gods, but despaired at the real presence of sin and inevitable destruction. Taking a dark spin on
this, Ogier believes in total destruction and hatred of creation as the forces that drive the world.
Guthrum rejects all three views, but does not know what to replace them with, revealing his lack of
understanding of the meaning of life. However, Alfred answers all three views in his harp song of the
Christian worldview. Harold s false pleasures are compared to the simple joy of the monk and Elf s
despair is opposed to the perseverance and ultimate hope of the Christians though defeated. In
addition, Ogier s idea of hatred of creation as the driving force of the universe is disproved by Alfred
quoting God calling creation good, and he is told that this destruction will lead to an end of the Danes,
because only Christians will protect civilization. King Alfred s song also compares King Guthrum to
himself, stating that

Ambition In Julius Caesar
The nature of the human mind is that if one doesn t like something, fix it. That statement applies to
everyday life, in finances, career choices, and relationships. The delicate relationship between a ruler
and his people balances on thin ice; be a leader and take charge, take the glory and power given and
run. Do not, however, exploit this glory and power to the point of upsetting the people. Julius Caesar,
like many rulers before and after him, worked tirelessly to strike this balance. However, his
assassination proved that those attempts were futile. Caesar was murdered by his own people, and
furthermore, his friends, for reasons really unknown to history. However, through pieces written
sometimes years later by others, historians are able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cicero in his piece Roman History says, Behold, here you have a man who was ambitious to be kind
of the Roman People and master of the whole world; and he achieved it! The man who maintains that
such an ambition is morally right is a madman; for he justifies the destruction of law and liberty and
thinks their hideous and detestable suppression glorious. Cicero here is simply explaining that the
power Caesar holds, and his wish to have power over everybody, is morally incorrect. His ways of
handling the law and ruling makes him a madman for all he has done. He is inserting the idea here that
Caesar s assassins had in mind this hunger for power Caesar held as a possible reason for his demise.
Once faced with the powers of a ruler, he is simply after more, leading him to argue that something
about that want of power is not right of a man. This argument is again attempted to be explained by
Nicolaus of Damascus in Life of Augustsus. In this, Nicolaus touches on many points of possible
contention, including the search for power Caesar had. He did not share his glory with others who
deserved it, taking all of the power that resulted for himself. Nicolaus eloquently ties up his point in
the statement, When he became exalted through many notable victories (which was fair enough) and
began to think himself superhuman the common people worshipped him, but he began to be
obnoxious to the optimates and to those who were trying to obtain a share in the government. The
point is made here that as Caesar grew in the ranks ad gained more power of the people, he became
less inclined to share this power with those attempting to also move up in government. Once given a
good deal of power, Caesar let that get to his head and affect how he lead his people, as

The Mongols And The Mongols
According to the background essay on the Mongols, The Mongols were a small tribe during the 13th
century. They were from the grasslands of Central Asia and conquered much of the known world. The
essay also said that They operate from the backs of horses and sometimes use siege weapons. It was
also explained how the Mongols were one of the several nomadic peoples who competed with one
another for pasture land and livestock. They also had no metal working, no written language, and no
permanent homes. The Mongols also were first led by Genghis Khan and did not have a good
reputation. The Mongols may have been successful, but it was due to mostly negative examples and
information. The Mongols were although positive in a way. For example their Yam System, to make
them go faster and farther. However, this example and many other positive examples are ways for the
Mongols to fight better and kill more people. The Mongols were barbaric because they were brutal
and ruthless.
The Mongols were first off very brutal people whose only focuses were to kill people to get what they
wanted, land. One reason why the Mongols were so brutal was because of their brutal leaders who told
them what to do and go for. According to the background essay on the Mongols Numerous chinese
cities fell, including where Mongol slaughter was so great the streets were said to be greasy with flesh.
This was all done under the leadership of Genghis Khan who launched this army. Therefore, Khan led

Billy Collins Figurative Language
There has been good poems written by good poets in history. Billy Collins has published a lot of good
poems. The poem Neither Snow is a good poem that was written by Billy Collins. I will be analyzing
this poem by using figurative language, figuring out the type of poem it is, and the dramatic situation;
what happens in the poem and what the poem is about. The poem Neither Snow has excellent
figurative language. Imagery comes up a lot during this poem. (2) The first line of the poem has
imagery, when all of a sudden the city air filled with snow. Visualizing the air filling up with white
snow could also be color symbolization. White can mean purity but it can also mean death. More

Essay on Human Factors in Long-Duration Spaceflight
A manned mission to Mars is an extremely dangerous excursion. Crewmembers can expect a six
month flight to the planet, one year of occupation, and a six month travel back. During this period,
numerous human factors challenges can complicate, and even ruin the entire mission. This paper will
identify human factors challenges the crew will face, describe why they are so dangerous, and finally,
identify ways to mitigate these challenges.
The first challenge in a long duration spaceflight is almost immediately apparent after lift off, leaving
the gravitational pull of Earth, and entering a micro gravity environment. Weightlessness can have
several different impacts on the human body. Astronauts who orbit the Earth on the ... Show more

One way to do this is with extensive exercise. Not just two or three times a week for 30 minutes.
Crewmembers must exercise six times a week for almost three hours at a time using equipment such
as the ergometer, treadmill, and the Resistance Exercise Device (RED) ( Use It or Lose It, 2004).
Another way to fight the effects of micro gravity is to create an artificial gravity. Creating artificial
gravity can be done using one of two techniques, a rotation or acceleration. The entire spacecraft could
rotate, or a single section of the spacecraft could do the rotation. This would give the astronauts the
opportunity to live or weight train in a non weightless environment (Hsu, 2010). High acceleration and
deceleration rates of the spacecraft could also provide a normal gravitational environment ( Space
Travel, n.d.).
Once the mission leaves the Earth s atmosphere and travels into space, the next challenge awaits. The
Earth s atmosphere and magnetic field act as a shield and deter a large portion space radiation. Space
radiation comes from our Sun in the form of solar radiation and also comes from outside our solar
system in the form of cosmic rays (Gray, 2013). Radiation may be the most dangerous phenomenon a
long duration spaceflight could face. Solar flares erupt from the Sun and send millions of tons of
charged particles into space at speeds

Evolution Of American Attitudes And Ideologies Apropos Of...
In this essay I explain the evolution of American attitudes and ideologies apropos of Britain from 1764
to 1776. I do so by, first, beginning with providing the context and explaining the state of the
relationship between America and Britain throughout the course of the years 1764 to 1774, which in
turn, consequently lead up to and instigated the creation of Thomas Jefferson s 1774 piece entitled A
Summary View of the Rights of British America. Next, second, I situate and analyze this very piece,
that being: Thomas Jefferson s A Summary View of the Rights of British America, which is was a tract
written before the Declaration of Independence, in which Thomas Jefferson (under his own personal
authority/discretion) lays out for the delegates of the First Continental Congress a set of grievances
directly against the King of England and his corresponding Parliament, and moreover, ultimately
radically forewarns and threatens specifically the King of England to fundamentally change, alter, and
lessen Britain s stronghold on America or else something will be done on behalf of America. Finally,
third, I reach to and evaluate another subsequent document, that being: the Committee of
Five/Continental Congress 1776 Declaration of Independence, which is a statement written by the so
called Committee of Five (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and
Robert Livingston) and the Continental Congress, which was to be adopted by the newly formed

Panem In The Hunger Games
Panem, the illusion of impeccable nation. Though, with a closer look, the true appearance of
crookedness becomes apparent. America, as well as its future is conforming into the corrupt society of
Panem. Life seen in Garret Ross s, The Hunger Games , shows kinship to a soon and daunting real
world future. In The Hunger Games , the difference between the less fortunate and the rich are easily
detectable. The twelve districts are in extreme poverty compared to the residents living in the Capital
of Panem. The Capital is very advanced in technology, built beautifully, and intense in color. The
people are dressed very bright and fashionable. They have big, colorful hair and they re city is high in

people around the world have always done this, even now. Back in Roman Times, residents would
gather around giant arenas and watch prisoners fight for their lives either against man eating lions or
other prisoners. Since then, society has become more civilized, but isn t far from that. For example.
boxing is an American favorite sport. Even though they re not fighting each other to the death, they
still bring pain to each other and it s watched as entertainment. In a less physical example, reality
shows are constantly showing heart breaking moments on Television (like when Kim Kardashian got a

A New Year Of Youth Group
To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just
gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with
every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped me
focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youth ministry efforts.
When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the church and
was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my processor s shadow of
high expectations because I feel like I m not good enough to have New Life want to pay me. This may
sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this semester. I didn t expect it to be
much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing with New Life for the past two
years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all youth workers expect: being able
to grow in my relationships with students in order to help these teens grow in their relationship with
God. If I ve learned anything from my experiences, though, I ve learned that you can never really
expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I brought into the practicum was two
years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me the advantage of already being
familiar with most of the people I worked with. I was given similar assignments and tasks by Ryan as

Benefits Of Extracurricular Activities
In high school there are extracurricular activities and clubs that educators and parents feel offer many
benefits to students. In contrary to this I do not believe that the school should make students
participate in afterschool activities against their will. Reasonings for this are: Many students have
work outside of school and have no time, Many students play sports which is already considered an
extracurricular activity, some students will resent extracurricular if they are forced to participate in
them. On the other hand, colleges require a well rounded student who has taken extracurriculars.
One reason that supports my claim is the fact that many high school students already work and they
don t have the time for extracurriculars. According to an article by NewsOK, it states, The U.S.
Census shows that more than 1 in 4 high school students age 16 and older work. This shows us that a
good amount of students are already occupied outside of school by work alone. Meaning that students
who work would not have the time to join extracurriculars and it would be unjust to force a student to
join one. A student who works and has school is already learning very valuable lessons and ideas
about the real world and what it takes to keep and maintain a job and they pick up many skills by
doing this. To force them into extracurriculars to learn lessons and values wouldn t make sense
because they are already learning everything they need to know to keep and maintain a job in the real

Single Film Sequence
Analysis of a Single Film Sequence I chose the segment from 15:00 to 18:00 of the film It Should

renting the billboard to put her name on it. The camera stayed focused on her when she talked. The
manager was first impatient and did not believe that the girl was serious about renting the billboard.
The diegetic sound of the interruptive phone ringing showed that he was busy. Without any mood
music, the viewer could feel a sense of unease in the dialogue between Gladys and the manager in the
office. However, after Gladys showed him her money. The manager changed his attitude. He went to
check the prices for renting the space. The director used panning to shift the camera slightly to focus
him when the manager was talking. The film zoomed in when Gladys was thinking and calculating the
price for renting the billboard, showing Gladys s excited facial expression when she finally made the
decision to rent the billboard. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

office. The music was light hearted. When Gladys finally saw the billboard with her name painting on
it, she became more contented. At the same time, the background music changed to be more cheerful

The Role Of Female Power In Carmilla And Snow, Glass Apples
Female power is suppressed by men in vampire literature. I will analyze the idea of women treated as
inferior by men through psychoanalysis mainly based on Freudian concepts. The topics of
psychoanalysis that I will be using to look at the texts are the monstrous feminine , the castration
complex, and masculine instinct. The two texts that will be analyzed are the short stories Carmilla and
Snow, Glass, Apples .
The short story Carmilla was written by Joseph LeFanu in 1871. This was during the Victorian Era
where strict laws of gender roles and sexuality were present. For example, Being forward in the
company of men suggested a worrying sexual appetite (web p 1). This information is important to the
story because the character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carmilla rebels against Victorian society gender roles and this concept of representing homosexuality
through a vampire monster shows that men fear women showing power through sexuality and feel the
need to destroy it.
The short story Snow, Glass, Apples was written by Neil Gaiman in 1994. The story is a re telling of
the fairy tale Snow White from the step mother s perspective. Gaiman is considered a feminist writer
and this is shown in Snow, Glass, Apples where he brings awareness to the removal of women s power
by men in vampire text. In 1990, third wave feminism had just begun. This wave involved eschewing
victimization and defining feminine beauty for themselves as subjects, not as objects of a sexist
patriarchy (Rampton 1). This differs from Carmilla because LeFanu supports oppression of females
while Gaiman is a feminist aiming to expose stereotypes of gender roles.
Female sexuality is condemned in Snow, Glass, Apples by displaying women who only take interest in
pleasuring men, and not themselves. In the story, the queen talks about her husband and says when he
wanted me he would send for me, and I would go to him, and pleasure him, and take my pleasure with
him (Gaiman 2). Also, when the stepmother becomes Queen and leads her people, it is because the
King died and not because she earned it. It is provocative that the Queen leads her people alone
because she is in control of her people, and does not receive a man s insight. When the Lord of the

Abstract
We are familiar with the problems that our environment face due to plastics, as these consumes
massive energy and other natural resources, depleting the environment in various ways. Moreover,
their disposal has always been a constant headache and problem for the society. But plastic s usage
can t be completely ostracized as it will result in depletion of other natural resources like paper, wood
at great extent. The light weight, cost effectiveness and strength of plastics can be put in to various
good uses. The softening point of plastic is achieved at about 160 degrees Celsius. These properties of
plastics will play a good role in construction of roads. The softened plastic can be laminated over hot
aggregates and can be used as an alternative to the very costly bitumen used as a binder in road
construction.
The main objective of this paper is to discuss the significance of plastic use in road construction in
terms of strength and cost reduction.

Power Hungry Athens
Whose Fault Was it Anyway: The Power Hungry Athenians?
If we do go to war, have no thought that you went to war over a trivial affair (Pericles, in Hunt 101¬).
With a sudden rise to power after the end of the Persian War, Athens became a naval superpower in
control of many other city states in the Delian alliance that struck fear into their rival, the Spartans,
who believed that the Athenians might destroy Sparta s control over their own alliance. Becoming as
powerful as Athens did, the city state became power hungry and led the Greeks into long years of
turmoil, leading to the end of the Golden Age. Sparta may have started the war, but Athens holds most
of the blame, for creating an empire through the Delian League, prospering economically, ... Show

They believ[ed] that their security depended on winning a competition for power (Hunt 79). Allied
with city states from northern Greece, the islands of the Aegean Sea, and along the Ionian coast, this
alliance was built on naval power. By controlling the seas and most coastal regions Athens created a
global super power that could rival Sparta s alliance in size and strength, intimidating the other nation.
It began as a democratic alliance... (Hunt 79), but Athens soon took complete control of the allies,
because the city state was allowed to command and set up all of the league s financial arrangements
for the naval fleet. Around three hundred city states paid dues according to its size to the Athenians,
who in turn were in charge of how the dues were spent. Most of the dues that were not already paid in
the form of triremes were spent on building the boat and paying the oarsmen. It was through this line
of work and amount of income, gaining both income and political influence, that the poor citizens
were eager to expand Athens s power over other Greeks (Hunt 80). This very fleet of triremes were
used by the Athenians to force disobedient allies to pay financial dues. With Athens becoming as
powerful as they did in a short amount of time the militant Sparta feared for their superiority in
controlling their own providences and

Nature with all her beautiful plants and animals along with humans lived happily ever after This

our planet s happily ever after story seems very distant and distraught. According to Convention of

Can similar valuation exercise lead to Canadian Boreal forests happily ever after?
Picture 2: Mining and gas wells within Boreal forests Photo credit: Green Peace
Firstly, economic valuation of ecosystem services can provide a logical reasoning to oppose
unwarranted industrial development in Boreal zone. For instance, a study conducted by Canadian
Boreal Initiative on Counting Canada s Natural Capital estimated the total economic value of boreal
ecosystem services (both market and non market values) in the year 2002 as 750 billion CAD which
would equate to 61 percent of the value of Canada s GDP (as of 2002). Furthermore, on comparing the
values, it was found that total non market value of boreal ecosystem services is 13.8 times greater than
the net market value of boreal natural capital extraction. The results imply that economic, ecological
and social benefits of boreal forest systems in their pristine state, may be significantly greater than the
market values derived from current industrial development forestry, oil and gas, mining, and
hydroelectric energy combined.
Secondly, the regeneration capacity of these forests are very low so the trees once destroyed, would
take much longer to grow back than forests in tropical regions. Fires in Canada s boreal forest are
common, burning an average of 2m ha every year. Insurance Bureau of Canada calculated the damage
from wildfire in Fort McMurray, Alta., as $3.58 billion, making it the most expensive disaster for

Gender Bias In The Elizabethan Era In England
The issue of gender bias has been in play in every society since the creation of man. After mankind
had sinned, eating the fruit, God punished man, woman and serpent. To the woman, He said Your
desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you. (Genesis 3:16b). In each society,
however, men and women played different roles. Although I don t necessarily disagree with the gender
bias that exists and has existed, I am still shocked at how differently people of different genders lived
differently in the past. My opinion is that people are making gender bias in the world today much
worse than it seems. This can be seen history, biblical events and personal experience.
In the Elizabethan Era in England, there was a great difference between the treatment of men and
women. Elizabethan women were to be subservient to men and relied on a male relative to support
them. After a marriage, the women were expected to run households and take care of children. On the
other hand, men dealt their jobs and were allowed to go around and have fun. Women in this era were,
although treated with respect, still somewhat looked down on and it was very difficult for a woman
without a male relative to live well. This is very different from today s society, as there are many
independent women living around the world. I am quite shocked at the way the Elizabethan women
had practically no say in things, as in many cultures, and that they had no choice over their marriage.

Re: Training Materials: Internal Revenue Agents
This is in reply to your request for information about internal revenue agents. The material will help
inform new employees about the demands and job requirements of an IRS agent. The information will
be separated into several categories; necessary qualities, prior experience, and daily duties. Mrs.
Angela Overstreet, IRS agent, happily helped our team gather information regarding the daily
demands of her job.
Necessary Qualities
Internal revenue agents not only need the basic skills required to perform auditing, but agents also
need important qualities such as integrity and commitment. A ... Show more content on

Documents will include complex amount of numbers with different meanings, and agents must be able
to identify problems through auditing.
Tax Law Books IRS agents must have prior experience with the various tax laws. However, a tax book
will be used extensively due to the vast amount of laws. Books will also be used to support claims of
fraudulent behavior.
Tax Returns The various amounts of tax returns, such as Form 706 and Form W 2, are used to
determine income tax. Returns will be compared with financial records to determine if the law is being
followed.
Financial Records Agents are given access to corporation s financial records in order to determine if
the law is being followed.

Dr Manette A Tale Of Two Cities
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (pg 3) For some of the characters in this story, it was
the best of times while for others, it was the worst of times. Dr. Manette s internal struggle is focused
more around his horrible past where he was forced by the Marquis family to help out a dying woman
and her stabbed brother. After being mentally scarred by what he had seen, he tried to write a letter to
the Minister of state explaining what he had witnessed, but then he was stopped by the Marquis family
and then wrongfully thrown into prison. This devastated him and left him with a wrecked mental state
and most of his memories of his family lost. Throughout the story, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles
Dickens, we see some characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manette plays a huge role in A Tale of Two Cities and has changed drastically which made him into a
better man than how he first started. When we first were introduced to Dr. Manette, he was in the top
of a wine shop making shoes. This time was most likely where his mental state was at its worse
because he had no idea that he wasn t in prison anymore. He was in such bad condition that he
referred to himself as cell 105 North Tower (Where he was kept in prison) and didn t recognize his
daughter when she came to find him. We start to see things get better for him after his daughter starts
to take care of him and take him away from the wine shop. She nurses him back to health but we still
see that he has trouble with his past. Even though he is almost back to normal and doing much better,
we still see that things can set him back to when he made shoes as a prisoner. An example of this is
when Charles Darnay talks to Dr. Manette about his love for Lucie. When having this conversation, he
starts to talk to him about his horrible past and Dr. Manette immediately stops him and becomes very
pale and stressed out about this past. My present name, though but slightly changed from my mother s,
is not, as you will remember, my own. I wish to tell you what that is, and why I am in England. Stop!
Said the Doctor of Beauvais. I wish it, that I may the better deserve your confidence , and have no
secret from you. The Doctor then proceeds to cover his ears and refuse to listen to Charles. Finally
when we see Charles Darnay tell Dr. Manette his past before his and Lucies wedding we see Dr.
Manette go back to making shoes and remember nothing that had happened in the time that had
passed, where he wasn t in the wine shop. We see Dr. Manettes mental stability jumps around
throughout the story, The second part of the story though is where we really see Dr. Manette develope

Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes
| Connections and Contrasts of Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes | | | |
The Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One s Reason and of Seeking Truth in the
Sciences is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the
evolution of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism. Descartes
modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of
reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any
preconceived notions. Whereas Francis Bacon s Scientific Method wanted to replace the deductive
reasoning by inductive reasoning. The important concept in this reformed ... Show more content on

It is still practiced in some universities and will be practiced up until the 18th century at least. Three
fundamental changes have occurred during the Renaissance; Aristotle portrayed the understanding of
the universe, Galen described the importance of medicine and to understand astronomy Ptolemy
described it.
In 200 years there has been a revolutionary change, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton have replaced
Ptolemy in astronomy. Galileo has replaced Aristotle in physics. Harvey has replaced Galen in
medicine. The three ancient authorities have been over thrown.
In Rene Descartes Discourse on Method he expresses his disappointment with traditional philosophy
and with the limitations of theology; only logic, geometry and algebra hold his respect, because of the
utter certainty which they can offer us. Unfortunately, because they depend on hypotheses, they cannot
tell us what is real, i.e. what the world is really like. Therefore Descartes suggests a method of thought
combining the consistency of mathematics but based on natural truths about what is real, basic
knowledge which could not be wrong (like the axioms of geometry). He calls into question everything
that he thinks he has learned through his senses but rests his entire system on the one truth that he
cannot doubt, namely, the reality of his own mind and the radical difference between the mental and
the physical aspects of the world.
What is crucial to Descartes is

Elephant Man

Joseph Carey Merrick was born on August 5, 1862 in Leicester to Mary Jane Merrick and Joseph
Merrick. His siblings were William, John, and, Marian. Joseph Carey Merrick was born with
deformities on his body, head, and even his hands. His parents said that it was caused by Mary being
knocked down by an elephant at the fairgrounds while she was pregnant with Merrick. That was how
Joseph Carey Merrick got his name that he is well known as, which is The Elephant Man. Merrick had
a close relationship with his mother until she died when he was only eleven. She died of Bronchial
Pneumonia.

Europe where he was beaten, robbed, and abandoned. In 1886 Joseph had made his way back to
London unable to speak. The police searched Merrick and found Fredrick Treves business card.
Treves brought Merrick to the London Hospital. Fredrick Treves decided to admit Merrick for his
physical condition. Francis Carr Gomm, supported Treves idea. Merrick s condition had worsened
over the past two years. The London Hospital was not equipped to take care of an incurable patient so
Carr Gomm talked to other hospitals and institutions no one would take Merrick. Carr Gomm put a
letter in the New York Times giving an outline of Joseph Carey Merrick s life. In result of this letter
the public gave much support. This support earned enough money to get Merrick a place to spend the
rest of his life in the hospital under watch by the nurses and staff. Merrick s case attracted many
people. Many people visited Merrick in the hospital and continued to give funds. One important
person out of the many that visited Merrick was the Princess of Wales Alexandra. Since Merrick had
so many supporters he was able to fulfill all of his desires before he died. A few thing she got to do
with the money from his supporters were going to the theatre and going on vacation many times in the
country. Merrick spent a lot of his time writing poetry and building a church out of playing cards.
Merrick stayed in the hospital most of the time. Over time Merrick s condition slowly worsened over
the four years that he was in the London Hospital. He got a lot of care from the staff and nurses. He
spent much of his time in the living quarters or in bed because of his decreased energy. His head
continued to grow larger and the deformities on his head grew larger. Joseph was five feet two inches

ABSTRACT In recent years, digital media are widely popular, their security related issues are
becoming greater importance. Watermarking is the process of hiding digital data in a carrier signal.
Embedding a digital signal such as audio, video or image with the information which cannot be
removed easily is called digital watermarking. Digital watermarking mainly used to verify the
authenticity, integrity of the carrier signal or to show the identity of its owners. In this paper, we
present a survey on various digital watermarking techniques. This paper mainly concentrates a
detailed survey of all watermarking techniques on image watermarking types in today s world.
Index Terms Digital watermarking, spatial domain, Least Significant Bit (LSB), Frequency domain,
Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and Discrete Fourier

Understanding Laser Shows
Attending a laser light show can be beautiful, fun, and maybe even dizzying. The audience may be
dazzled by the twisting and turning colors, but how much of the crowd actually knows how lasers
operate? Light, color, vision, and the electromagnetic spectrum can explain how lasers and the
captivating shows are possible.
In order to understand laser shows, you need to understand lasers. The first working laser was created
by Theodore Maiman, who placed a ruby rod, a fully reflective mirror on one end, a partially
reflective mirror on the other, with a high intensity lamp wrapped around the ruby rod into a cylinder
to create a laser beam. When the lamp was turned on, it excited the electrons in the ruby rod. Excited
electrons emitted photons,

Social Media and Social Protest
A growing body of literature examines the relationship between environmental protest and news
media representation with special emphasis on how these formations relate to and affect the public and
politics.
The nature of our research is such that we are going to use a multitheoretical approach. Space does not
permit to review all the work done on this matter, but we have selected various key perspectives
needed for understanding the mechanisms of framing and media bias in the reporting of protest events.
We briefly review the more relevant perspectives that have guided our assessment of the evidence and
that were endorsed in our findings.
Protest logic and mediation opportunity structure
Various Studies have showed that media display an inherent bias against social protests, reflecting
elite interests, primarily by focusing on incidents of violence rather than on the message these protest
groups try to convey. Eldridge argues that what is being presented as neutral reporting is in fact an
array of codes and practices which effectively rest upon a cultural imperative to hear the causes of
disputes in one way rather than another , meaning that Media are not neutral unselective recorders of
events (Oliver and Maney, 2000: 464) Mainstream media predominantly tend to focus on violence and
on the spectacular rather than on the message being conveyed . Protest groups

Iceland Is A Country Of Iceland
Iceland is a country that is misleading in many ways and is often underestimated. The name Iceland,
itself is often debated and joked about, however the origin of the name Iceland is credited to a story by
a Scandinavian sailor in the Book of Settlements (Shanin). Many often joke that the country of Iceland
is greener than one may be led to believe in more ways than one. The island was first inhabited by
Nordic people around 870 AD in what is now modern day Reykjavik (Valgardsson). The city of
Reykjavik is the heart of Iceland in more ways than one. The city is home to approximately 120,000
people this contributes to the 60% of the Icelandic population who live in the Reykjavik city area
(Scrivener). In addition to housing the largest population in the country, the city is also the home of
the Icelandic government, the country s biggest industries, and Icelandic culture (Valgardsson). This is
what makes Reykjavik so unique as the city itself is an embodiment of the country of Iceland as a
whole. And while it is the fastest growing urban area among Nordic countries, what sets it apart from
other homogeneous nordic cities is its approach to the environmental sustainability and its goal to be
carbon neutral by 2020. Reykjavik is consider one of the greenest cities in the world. What makes it so
significantly sustainable is how it harnesses energy. Almost all the energy Reykjavik uses is derived
from hydroelectric power and geothermal energy (Gipe). The use of geothermal and

Negative Effects Of Child Labour
Child Labour is a plague to society and the future of humanity if this continues. Child Labour
negatively impacts the future in various ways. The first being that it increases the rate of poverty
because children do not get paid significantly less, adults lose their jobs to children and the children
because children are easier to manipulate do not get the knowledge they need to attain better lifestyles.
The second reason it regresses the growth of society by having child labourers grow up without the
knowledge they need, Their ignorance of their rights and the growth of their families. Finally, child
labour negatively impacts society because of the effects on children themselves. Hurting them
physically, psychologically and depriving them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So they make the children think that what they are getting paid is significant and make them do very
dangerous task that could kill them, if they ever try to refuse the employer would just threaten them or
harass them in the end helping line the pockets for the employer and increasing poverty. Ultimately,
adults lose jobs because of child labour. Children, as stated in the Ethical Trading Initiative are
cheaper to pay... [and] less likely to complain than adults ( A Global, n.d.). This states that children are
less likely to question what they are doing for whatever money they can get and although there are
child labour rights they are not strict enough for employers to care. Whereas adults have way more
rights, can and will most likely try to fight against unfair working conditions and need to be paid more
leading most employers to lay off more adult workers in favour of child labourers which in return
reduce the amount of income for already poor families. In conclusion, child labour increase the
amount of poverty in society by having children get paid less, children unable to fight back and the
decrease of adult employment.
Secondly, Child labour helps regress society and stops it from growing by having Child labourers

Investing in the Stock Market
Investing in the Stock Market Matt Gonzales Abstract The purpose of this paper is to inform the
average investor of how to make money in the stock market. The stock market should be thought of as
a long term savings vehicle. Investing in the stock market should not be associated with gambling. By
investing in high quality U.S. companies, the investor in a company profits along with the company.
As a shareholder, when the company makes money, the investor also does. There are many ways to
invest in the stock market, but it is my opinion that investing in mutual funds is probably the most
appropriate way for the average person, without expertise in stock analysis, to make money. This

For example, if a person contributes $2,000 to their IRA, they will receive money back on their tax
return at the end of the year. If that person is in the 28% tax bracket, they will receive $560 back
($2,000 X 28%). The second type of IRA is known as Roth IRA. After tax money is contributed to the
Roth IRA, therefore the investor does not receive income tax money back at the end of the year, but
the beauty of the Roth IRA is that when the money is withdrawn at the time of retirement (age 70), the
profit is completely tax free, both state and federal (rothirarules.net, 2011). So, it is easy to see that the
Roth IRA is an excellent vehicle for retirement investing. It makes much more sense to use a Roth
IRA for retirement than a traditional one. With a 401k account, the money that is invested is referred

example of this would be if an individual earned $100 before it was taxed by the federal and state
governments, the entire $100 would be placed in the account to be invested. After tax money means
that the same $100 would first be taxed federally as normal income (usually 28%) and then taxed by
the state (usually 6%), to leave only $66 of the original $100 to now be spent or invested. In addition
to the tax advantage, the main benefit of the 401k is

INTRODUCTION
The word yoga comes from yuj in sanskrit, which means unity or Yoke the relative meaning is to
concentrate attention or use . Asana is one of the most significant tools of yoga helping to position the
body in various positions with the total participation of the mind and self to establish communication
between our inner and outer self (Iyengar, 2001). Yoga practices assume a critical part in the support
of human systems. Yoga perfect builds up the body as well as produces intellectual capacities.
Moreover, yogis procure dominance of the involuntary muscles of their body (A.M. Moorthy and J.
David Manual Raju, 1983). In this study we try to discover the effects of aerobic dance and yogic
practice on blood lipid profiles among university students. Yoga provides techniques (physically,
mentally, intellectually and emotionally) for this growth. These techniques are also therapeutically
useful for many of the stress related problems. Sound health is an adjusted advancement of a person s
identity and enthusiastic dispositions, empowering him to live in harmony with his condition. It is
only a great adjustment to the biological balance in our body and this can be achieved by doing yogic
practices and exercises: Yoga has a total message for mankind, has a message for the human body, has
a message for the human personality and has a message for the human soul. Swami Kuvalayananda 2

Why Bother By Michael Pollen Essay
Michael Pollan has recognized that there is an issue in today s society, and that issue is climate
change. Within the article of, Why Bother , by Michael Pollan, he talks about an effect that society
itself may have inflicted upon themselves. But looking at the actual reasoning behind why the climate
is changing is baffling. In the text of Why Bother , Michal Pollen talks about climate change is on us,
yet before reading the text, I assumed that maybe climate change was just destiny, and continues to

Pollan does a great job in filling in the gaps on feeling the urge to do something and actually acting
upon those feelings. He even shares of ways of how we could be a help and have an impact on culture.
He gave an great example on gardening. Gardening may seem small, yet has many benefits, such as
saving carbon and also we somewhat teaches us to be self sufficient. Rather than depending on society
for every little and big thing, we become reliable on ourselves and begin to show respect to the
climate, mother Earth. Also another big thing is that we are now providing our own food for ourselves,
our families, and others who may even pay to get your produce. Pollan says, as we began to garden,
we will reduce the power of the cheap energy mind by personally overcoming it s most debilitating
weakness: it s helplessness and the fact that it can t do much of anything that doesn t involve division
or subtraction. I believe the big lesson that the garden teaches us is that as long as the sun is up and we
can still plan an even plant, that there are ways we can accommodate ourselves and not weaken our

Substance Abuse And Bipolar Disorder
Separately, substance abuse and bipolar disorder are two very serious conditions, and both have been
proven to be caused in part by heredity. Shockingly, co occurrence of both disorders in a single person
is a very common combination, and it can be very dangerous. People who have both bipolar disorder
and an addiction are understood to have a dual diagnosis or genetic overlap . Often, each condition can
worsen the symptoms of the other; having both problems increases the risk of mood swings,
depression, suicide, and other violent behavior. Studies are still being done to determine the linkage
between these two genetic ailments, but it is obvious that there has to be some relationship. The
genetic heredity of both bipolar disorder as well as substance abuse have already been proven through
data from families, adoption, and twin studies, and I m sure a positive link amongst the two conditions
can be proven as well. The National Institute of Health has gathered information about people with
these problems who actively seek help. They cite various studies from 1988 1996 that state 60.7
percent of people with bipolar I disorder had a lifetime diagnosis of a substance abuse disorder, and 48
percent of those with bipolar II disorder also had a substance abuse problem. Compare that to the 27
percent of unipolar depression patients who also have substance dependencies, and you begin to see a
greater relationship appear. Those numbers are amazing to me, and definitely

Similarities Between The Hobbit And The Sword In The Stone
Final Essay
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit, writes J.R.R. Tolkien. Within Tolkien s famous novel The
Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, thirteen dwarves, and a wizard named Gandalf embark on a journey to reclaim
the dwarves long forgotten gold. Although the story seems to be completely original and made of fresh
ideas, it is actually influenced by previous literature, like other common novels. Many legends of King
Arthur, with unknown authors, influenced J.R.R. Tolkien s The Hobbit. Several points and ideas in the
Arthurian story The Sword in the Stone are also reflected in The Hobbit. One theme in this story is
that one shouldn t have a bias towards who can do something and who cannot. For instance, in The
Hobbit, the dwarves believe that Bilbo can t be a good burglar and help them with their task because
he is a hobbit. When Bilbo had attempted to steal something that could ve saved them, Bombur said,

In both of these stories, it begins with all parties being merry. In the first tale, it is the dwarves who are
merry, because they are giddy at the thought of regaining their gold. In the Arthurian tale, they are
joyous because it is Christmastime. In both fantasy tales, the hero is always expected to defeat the
largest foe. In The Hobbit, the hero s trouble is that no one wanted to defeat Smaug. In Sir Gawain and
the Green Knight, the problem is that none of the knights wanted to stand up and face the Green
Knight. One last similarity is that because of being chivalrous, nothing horrible happened to the hero
in the end. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain faced three testing temptations, but still
fulfilled his promise. In The Hobbit, Bilbo shows chivalry by bringing the Arkenstone to Bard and the
Elvenking as his plan. Thus, The Hobbit and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are

The Pros And Cons Of Christian Science
For most of the world s population, a disease is understood to be a physical issue, aside from mental
illnesses. Viruses and bacteria are responsible for infections, tumors stem from an abnormal growth of
cells, a poor diet may result in comorbidities, and so on. However, imagine a specialist explaining to
you, the patient, that your symptoms of a cough, chest congestion, and fatigue are merely illusions
created in the mind, to which the cure is overcoming your mental belief that you are sick at all. This
alternative idea of disease and treatment comes from the religion of Christian Science, and along with
its highly controversial healing practices, the church demonstrates two bioethical issues: are people
seeking treatment in the church due to frustration with the current medical system, or are members
afraid to seek professional medical help due to disapproval from the church? In examining these
issues, first, the Christian Science doctrine must be understood, then the history surrounding the
religion s creation, and finally how the two tie into today s bioethical problems. To begin, the
Christian Science religion shares some similarities with the other Judeo Christian religions in that they
utilize the same Bible, and claim to follow the same God. However, the Christian Science religion
contrasts sharply in most other aspects, especially in the ideas surrounding the perfection of God s
creation. For example, in the Protestant denominations, man is considered flawed due

Titanic Persuasive Speech
85 years. 85 years is the average lifespan of a human, according to the Social Security Administration.
Humans as individuals are not around for an exorbitant amount of time. The heartwarming, yet
devastating 1997 film Titanic, by James Cameron, as well as, the spunky and rebellious quote, If you
obey all the rules, you miss all the fun , by Katherine Hepburn, reflect the idea that even though life a

freezing water, Never let go. With fear he may not make it she replied, I ll never let go Jack, I ll never

gave each other the rule to never let go, and that is a rule they will always follow since it unfortunately
followed them to the grave. While Rose and Jack were able to reach this level of maturity, Hepburn s
quote does not indicated any possible maturity, only rebellion. Her quote focuses on having fun, and
not caring what rules try and stop her. There are some rules, that need to be followed simply for
reasons, such as safety and respect. Her quote, however, shows no remorse for breaking rules. While
this is a good thing in some cases, others in is not. Unlike Rose and Jack, it is uncertain based on the

victory regardless of the cost. Most importantly the state s policies involved appealing to the people s
sense of nationalism and patriotism rather than loyalty to Marxist Lenninst principles, Modernisation
One of the key reasons for the Soviet success was that the military leaders were willing to learn from
the Germans particularly in relation to more sophisticated and mechanised equipment and weaponry
and the tactics of modern armoured warfare. The Soviet army was modernised and this transformation
resulted in better performance in battle with fewer losses in 1941 six or seven Soviet tanks were lost
for every German one; by 1944 the ratio was down to one to one. (Mastering 20th Century Russian
History) The military achieved significant success with the introduction of communication systems
radios and radar for the air force, radios in tanks and field telephone systems. This equipment allowed
them to plan and execute complex operations and was vital to the success in the encirclement of
Stalingrad. Industrialisation To ensure the army s ability to fight the war it was vitally

Bank Solutions Inc. Security Plan Essay
Introduction Bank SolutionsInc. is in need of a tailored IT security plan for strategic advantage,
regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation. As an organization that relies on IT for innovation and
technical advantage, it is essential to invest in necessary security controls. This will ensure the
infrastructure supports a layered security posture to detect, deter, eliminate or reduce as many
vulnerabilities and exposure as possible. It is the responsibility of executive management to determine
the amount of exposure and risk their organization is willing to accept.
Objectives
The main objectives of this security plan are to describe a security strategy and identify recommended
technologies to ensure Bank Solutions has the ability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To ensure that these technologies are implemented and administered properly, it is essential that
policies be written and training provided for an effective security program. Here are the following
recommended technologies that Bank Solution s should incorporate into its security plan.
Vulnerability Scanning
Vulnerability Scanning is the art of using one computer to look for weaknesses in the security of
another computer (Houghton, 2003). Just like any other security tool or software available, there are
many forms of vulnerability scanning. Each of these methods provides a specific task to help an
organization determine the security of their networks. These forms of vulnerability scanning are
called:
External
Internal
Active
Passive
These forms of vulnerability scanning are then applied by two types of vulnerability scanners that scan
an organization s network, they are:
Network based
Host based
Finally, the most important thing to understand about vulnerability scanning is that it is a requirement
for Bank Solutions to conduct these scans to meet compliance with Federal regulations.
Costs
The costs for vulnerability scanners run from free to tens of thousands of dollars. It is up to the CISO
and the IT staff to assess what services they require and to choose a scanner that best fits their

Monarch Butterflies Population Decline
The population numbers of the beloved Monarch Butterfly are rapidly decreasing, and scientists are
working hard this September to save the species. Monarch butterflies depend solely on the milkweed
plant to survive. Milkweed, however, has been disappearing like crazy due especially to increased use
of the weed killer Roundup over the past ten to twenty years. That, combined with more general trends
of habitat loss, various effects of climate change, and challenges like the drought in California, has
spelled out around a ninety percent population decline for monarchs in the past twenty years.
Scientists currently estimate a global population of around 33 million monarch butterflies, down from
over one billion in the past. Monarch Migration Season ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning mix/wp/2015/08/05/are monarch butterflies really
being massacred a new study says its a lot more complicated than it seems/) Monarch butterflies are
one of the only two way migratory species other than birds. Every spring, they embark on a 3,000 mile
journey north from the mountains of Mexico and return in the fall. The migration can make it a little
harder to accurately estimate population numbers; even so, the severity of the decline is no accounting
slip up. September marks the start of the southbound butterfly migration season, and scientists are
capitalizing on the timing to bring awareness to the species. There have been petitions in the past to
include the monarch butterfly on the endangered species list, and though they aren t currently on it
(which is good), their status is carefully

Canterbury Tales Henry Analysis
Garnel Severe 5/31/1It start as an antechamber of the royal palace in London, where the Archbishop of
Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely(which is me) are discussing a bill, waiting for twelve years past,
which will prieve the Church of many people. They also comment on their new monarch, Canterbury
remarking that although Henry V s youth presaged little good, he is now a model ruler. All he says in
praise of the King s wisdom, is confirmed by the Bishop of Ely, who adds that just as strawberries
grow beneath the nettle, the King s virtues have ripened and developed under cover of his wildness,
ere he inquires how Henry views the bill they have discussed? Canterbury replies that although the
King seemed almost indifferent, an offer the Church

Causes And Effects Of Coral Reefs
Ground water contamination, damage to coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove ecosystems,
salinization of soils and damage to vegetation, tsunami generated waste and debris, impacts on sewage
collection and treatment systems, damage to protected areas, coastline erosion and inundation,
changes in river hydrology, and loss of livelihoods based on natural resources or ecosystem services
are all examples of damage caused by a tsunami.
Coral reefs are natural breakwaters for a tsunami wave as it moves towards the coastline. The
December 2004 Indonesian earthquake tsunami devastated coral reefs around Indian Ocean coastlines.
Four years after the tsunami, the healthy corals were still regenerating. Due to the increase of
sedimentation, it doesn t allow light from the sun to penetrate through the water. It is crucial for coral
reefs to get sunlight for reproduction. Another major issue is the amount of debris from land bulldozes
habitats. Within minutes, most of the seawater that destroyed coastal communities returned to the
ocean, bringing untold tons of stuff with it; all the remnants of humanity including pieces of buildings,
cars, trees, garbage, huge amounts of plastics, eroded soils and likely a wide variety of pollutants from
those soils, homes, factories, stores, etc. Then there are the plastics and non biodegradable junk that
will initially pollute the coastlines and will then move out to sea, eventually reaching the north Pacific
and the western shores of North

Negative Benefits Of Technology
In today s society, technology is looked at in usually two different ways. It can be looked down upon
or highly praised by many. Back then authors predicted and wrote about some technological
advancements that are either portrayed as a helpful or detrimental. Two prime examples of this are
There Will Come Soft Rains and Fahrenheit 451 , both pieces of literature written by Ray Bradbury.
Technology is usually praised by the masses due to the countless medical advancements, its positive
effect on the education around the world, and its assistance with certain tasks. However, some people
might think otherwise. On the technological advancements in the medical viewpoint, there are many,
benefits to society. The most obvious one is the curing or the treatment of diseases. Vaccines are one
of the greatest advancements to mankind. Visiting your Doctor is an advancement of itself, but
vaccines are very helpful to our society. Some diseases that were life threatening in the past are no
longer an issue. Furthermore, some diseases basically faded out of existence. Other technological
advancements are the machinery that hospitals use on their patients. For example, a linear accelerator
is used to perform radiotherapy on patients that have some sort of cancer. Speaking about medical
machinery, in the book Fahrenheit 451 Montag s wife Mildred overdosed on pills and was suicidal. As
a result of this, the ambulance appeared to help Mildred with her problems. Mildred got her

The Ilulissat Declaration
In the 2008 Ilulissat Declaration, the five coastal states of the Arctic Circle met to discuss the Arctic
Ocean, climate change, protection of the marine environment, maritime safety, responsibility in
relation to the prospect of new shipping routes through the Arctic Ocean, and to settle overlapping
territory claims. It should be noted that the other Arctic states, the Arctic Council, and none of the
indigenous population were involved in the meeting. Although this is declaration is supported by the
United States, the UNCLOS III still is not, which puts the two pieces of legislation at odds with one
another. The other issue with the Ilulissat Declaration is that it once again brings up the question of
who really rules the Arctic Circle. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some question how an Antarctic Treaty System could be so direct and successful in protecting the
area, while the Arctic groups and legislation struggle to determine power, rights, and ruling
jurisdiction. The most obvious differences between the two territories are that the Antarctic is a
continent surrounded by water with no permanent residents, while the Arctic is a body of water
surrounded by land with an indigenous population. Although some argue that they have very similar
environments, the difference in physical geography and topography is what results in such
monumental differences in their treatment in international politics. The political geography of the
Arctic Circle contributes to the application of the Law of Seas (UNCLOS III), whereas in the
Antarctic there are no sovereignty claims and therefore no single country or combination of countries
can claim jurisdiction over parts of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.
To round out the Antarctic Treaty, three more international treaties were created to fully protect the
Antarctic environment and the waters surrounding it, this includes the 1972 Convention for the
Conservation of Antarctic Seals, the 1980 Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living
Resources, and the 1988 Convention on the Regulation of Antarctic Mineral Resource Activities
(Koivurova, 2005, 209). The organization, conciseness, and explicit goals of the treaties for the
Antarctic are the reasons why they are so effective and the Antarctic region is protected so

America s Role In The Syrian Independence Movement
Syria is a Middle Eastern country bordering the Mediterranean sea, in between Lebanon and Turkey.
The population of about 17,000,000 consists of all different religions and languages. Most of the
population speaks Arabic. Armenian and Kurdish are also often spoken as well. Syrian government
has the influence of Islamic laws. The country s capital is Damascus. In 1918, British forces sent
leader Emir Feisal and Arab troops to capture the capital of Syria, Damascus. The resulted in the end
of the Ottoman empire ruling. The Ottoman empire was in control of Syria for four hundred years
before Arabs took over. The Treaty of Versailles played a role in the Syrian independence movement.
Emir Feisal attended the conference. He supported the idea of Arabs self ruling Syria. This idea was in
play until the 1920s, where the San Remo conference took place. San Remo is a country in Italy. At
this meeting, Britain won mandates over Palestine and Iraq. A mandate allows more developed
countries like France and Britain, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
World War I was a time of revolution for the Syrians. They took this time to finally fight against the
Turkish rulers. On May 6th 1916, Syrian leaders were executed on the spot due to disagreement of the
Ottoman authority. Today, this event is celebrated in Syria and Lebanon as Martyrs Day. In the early
1900s, British troops were sent into Damascus, Syria to ally with the Syrian army to defeat four
hundred years of Ottoman rulers. As an independent country, they were under the power of King
Faisal I. Britain and France were on different terms within the idea of the Middle East. The two
countries split up the Middle Eastern countries. As a result, Syria was placed under French mandate. A
mandate is the allowance of larger, more developed countries to control smaller, less advanced
countries until they are able to support themselves. This mandate was officially in place by the
supervision of The League of

  • 2. Synopsis Of The Novel Train On Pakistan By Khushwant... The well known novel Train to Pakistan initiates study on theme of partition. This story opens the phase of political hatred, violence and sectarianism in a brilliant and realistic way. Related to those decisive or fateful days, which were brought by the British Raj followed by destruction, death and deracination for the north of the subcontinent; Khushwant Singh refers to the fact that India might have gained independence then, but the price they paid for it was Partition . The strength and the power of unity were deliberately divided between the two nations. It depicts the pitiful tale of individuals and communities suffered in the revolution of Partition. Tran to Pakistan illustrates the agony suffered on both sides of the political boundaries India and Pakistan after the partition. In general, partition uprooted the whole country and it is described as one of the deadliest experience the natives ever had of leaving their belongings behind and adapting the idea of new land, which was not theirs. The harrowing and spine chilling events of 1947 had shaken the faith of the people in the innate human beings. It had driven them into the state of wonder over what man has made of man. To Khushwant Singh, this was a period of great disillusionment and crisis of values, a distressing and disintegrating period of his life. The belief he had cherished all his life was shattered. Giving strength to his inner struggle and agony, he says: I had believed in the innate goodness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Health And Globalization s Impact On Food And People Health and Globalization s Impact on Food and People Globalization has profoundly affected the movement of people, food production and dietary habits. Political instability throughout the world has negatively impacted public healthcare systems, already strained by limited funding, increased urbanization, and the emergence of new and previously eradicated diseases that are resistant to available treatments. This paper explores how increased global travel and changes in food production, distribution and consumption are interconnected, effecting health at a global level. The paper acknowledges that globalization has both positive and negative impacts on global health; and argues that opportunities to improve global health are limited by the ... A total of eleven conferences were held, leading to the Office of International d Hygiène publique (OIHP) established in 1907 and ultimately to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 (WHO, 2016). Throughout this time the globalization of trade, the movement of people and the spread of infectious disease has grown, exponentially since the end of WWII. Where ocean going ships once dominated, air travel and cargo transportation has grown to have a profound impact on global health. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that eight million people travel by air every day, surpassing the three billion mark annually, and creating abundant opportunities for infected travelers to spread disease and antimicrobial resistance, in route to and at their destinations. Added to this, is the estimated fifty million tons of air cargo transported annually, playing host to vector borne diseases that can now travel across the globe in a matter of hours (IATA, 2013; Knobler, Mahmoud, Lemon, Pray, 2006). As a carrier of disease, air transportation poses a serious threat to global health. Government regulations and air transportation industry practices attempt to control or at least limit the opportunities for spreading infectious disease by monitoring aircraft and performing routine disinsection by applying insecticides inside cabins and cargo areas. • 4. Lady Of Shalott Gender Roles During the Victorian era many common themes are depicted throughout the writings of that time. One of the more important theme is gender roles. The theme of gender roles is very prominent in The Lady of Shalott by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Gender roles are also very noticeable in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. In Alfred Lord Tennyson s The Lady of Shalott, the theme of gender role is obvious. The Lady of Shalott is stuck in a tower and has been there for a long time. She feels alone and isolated while she watched the world around her. This poem shows how women may have felt trapped in relationships. The Lady wanted to leave and be with Sir Lancelot but was trapped. This symbolizes how women want to leave a bad relationship but they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Ballad Of The White Horse In The Ballad of the White Horse by G. K. Chesterton one of the main characters is King Alfred of England, the legendary savior of England from the invading Danes. The book is set in the ninth century AD. He is accompanied in battle by Eldred, a Saxon farmer, as well as Mark, a Roman, and Colan, a Celt. While Alfred originally feels despair over his efforts to drive away the Danes, the Blessed Virgin Mary appears to him in a vision and tells him that he is to continue. G. K. Chesterton named the book after a symbol in England, a white horse cut out chalk that must constantly be cleaned of encroaching weeds. To him, it symbolizes Christianity s struggle against eroding pagan forces. The ballad questions and discusses the opposing worldviews ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One group of Danes, represented by Harold, went into battle and conquered in the hopes of gaining earthly pleasures, without regard for others. Another group, represented by Elf, kept alive the old tales of the gods, but despaired at the real presence of sin and inevitable destruction. Taking a dark spin on this, Ogier believes in total destruction and hatred of creation as the forces that drive the world. Guthrum rejects all three views, but does not know what to replace them with, revealing his lack of understanding of the meaning of life. However, Alfred answers all three views in his harp song of the Christian worldview. Harold s false pleasures are compared to the simple joy of the monk and Elf s despair is opposed to the perseverance and ultimate hope of the Christians though defeated. In addition, Ogier s idea of hatred of creation as the driving force of the universe is disproved by Alfred quoting God calling creation good, and he is told that this destruction will lead to an end of the Danes, because only Christians will protect civilization. King Alfred s song also compares King Guthrum to himself, stating that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Ambition In Julius Caesar The nature of the human mind is that if one doesn t like something, fix it. That statement applies to everyday life, in finances, career choices, and relationships. The delicate relationship between a ruler and his people balances on thin ice; be a leader and take charge, take the glory and power given and run. Do not, however, exploit this glory and power to the point of upsetting the people. Julius Caesar, like many rulers before and after him, worked tirelessly to strike this balance. However, his assassination proved that those attempts were futile. Caesar was murdered by his own people, and furthermore, his friends, for reasons really unknown to history. However, through pieces written sometimes years later by others, historians are able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cicero in his piece Roman History says, Behold, here you have a man who was ambitious to be kind of the Roman People and master of the whole world; and he achieved it! The man who maintains that such an ambition is morally right is a madman; for he justifies the destruction of law and liberty and thinks their hideous and detestable suppression glorious. Cicero here is simply explaining that the power Caesar holds, and his wish to have power over everybody, is morally incorrect. His ways of handling the law and ruling makes him a madman for all he has done. He is inserting the idea here that Caesar s assassins had in mind this hunger for power Caesar held as a possible reason for his demise. Once faced with the powers of a ruler, he is simply after more, leading him to argue that something about that want of power is not right of a man. This argument is again attempted to be explained by Nicolaus of Damascus in Life of Augustsus. In this, Nicolaus touches on many points of possible contention, including the search for power Caesar had. He did not share his glory with others who deserved it, taking all of the power that resulted for himself. Nicolaus eloquently ties up his point in the statement, When he became exalted through many notable victories (which was fair enough) and began to think himself superhuman the common people worshipped him, but he began to be obnoxious to the optimates and to those who were trying to obtain a share in the government. The point is made here that as Caesar grew in the ranks ad gained more power of the people, he became less inclined to share this power with those attempting to also move up in government. Once given a good deal of power, Caesar let that get to his head and affect how he lead his people, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Mongols And The Mongols According to the background essay on the Mongols, The Mongols were a small tribe during the 13th century. They were from the grasslands of Central Asia and conquered much of the known world. The essay also said that They operate from the backs of horses and sometimes use siege weapons. It was also explained how the Mongols were one of the several nomadic peoples who competed with one another for pasture land and livestock. They also had no metal working, no written language, and no permanent homes. The Mongols also were first led by Genghis Khan and did not have a good reputation. The Mongols may have been successful, but it was due to mostly negative examples and information. The Mongols were although positive in a way. For example their Yam System, to make them go faster and farther. However, this example and many other positive examples are ways for the Mongols to fight better and kill more people. The Mongols were barbaric because they were brutal and ruthless. The Mongols were first off very brutal people whose only focuses were to kill people to get what they wanted, land. One reason why the Mongols were so brutal was because of their brutal leaders who told them what to do and go for. • 9. Essay on Human Factors in Long-Duration Spaceflight A manned mission to Mars is an extremely dangerous excursion. Crewmembers can expect a six month flight to the planet, one year of occupation, and a six month travel back. During this period, numerous human factors challenges can complicate, and even ruin the entire mission. This paper will identify human factors challenges the crew will face, describe why they are so dangerous, and finally, identify ways to mitigate these challenges. The first challenge in a long duration spaceflight is almost immediately apparent after lift off, leaving the gravitational pull of Earth, and entering a micro gravity environment. Weightlessness can have several different impacts on the human body. Astronauts who orbit the Earth on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One way to do this is with extensive exercise. Not just two or three times a week for 30 minutes. Crewmembers must exercise six times a week for almost three hours at a time using equipment such as the ergometer, treadmill, and the Resistance Exercise Device (RED) ( Use It or Lose It, 2004). Another way to fight the effects of micro gravity is to create an artificial gravity. Creating artificial gravity can be done using one of two techniques, a rotation or acceleration. The entire spacecraft could rotate, or a single section of the spacecraft could do the rotation. This would give the astronauts the opportunity to live or weight train in a non weightless environment (Hsu, 2010). High acceleration and deceleration rates of the spacecraft could also provide a normal gravitational environment ( Space Travel, n.d.). Once the mission leaves the Earth s atmosphere and travels into space, the next challenge awaits. The Earth s atmosphere and magnetic field act as a shield and deter a large portion space radiation. Space radiation comes from our Sun in the form of solar radiation and also comes from outside our solar system in the form of cosmic rays (Gray, 2013). Radiation may be the most dangerous phenomenon a long duration spaceflight could face. Solar flares erupt from the Sun and send millions of tons of charged particles into space at speeds ... • 10. Evolution Of American Attitudes And Ideologies Apropos Of... In this essay I explain the evolution of American attitudes and ideologies apropos of Britain from 1764 to 1776. I do so by, first, beginning with providing the context and explaining the state of the relationship between America and Britain throughout the course of the years 1764 to 1774, which in turn, consequently lead up to and instigated the creation of Thomas Jefferson s 1774 piece entitled A Summary View of the Rights of British America. Next, second, I situate and analyze this very piece, that being: Thomas Jefferson s A Summary View of the Rights of British America, which is was a tract written before the Declaration of Independence, in which Thomas Jefferson (under his own personal authority/discretion) lays out for the delegates of the First Continental Congress a set of grievances directly against the King of England and his corresponding Parliament, and moreover, ultimately radically forewarns and threatens specifically the King of England to fundamentally change, alter, and lessen Britain s stronghold on America or else something will be done on behalf of America. Finally, third, I reach to and evaluate another subsequent document, that being: the Committee of Five/Continental Congress 1776 Declaration of Independence, which is a statement written by the so called Committee of Five (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston) and the Continental Congress, which was to be adopted by the newly formed United States of ... • 12. A New Year Of Youth Group To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped me focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youth ministry efforts. When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the church and was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my processor s shadow of high expectations because I feel like I m not good enough to have New Life want to pay me. This may sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this semester. I didn t expect it to be much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing with New Life for the past two years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all youth workers expect: being able to grow in my relationships with students in order to help these teens grow in their relationship with God. If I ve learned anything from my experiences, though, I ve learned that you can never really expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I brought into the practicum was two years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me the advantage of already being familiar with most of the people I worked with. • 15. Benefits Of Extracurricular Activities In high school there are extracurricular activities and clubs that educators and parents feel offer many benefits to students. In contrary to this I do not believe that the school should make students participate in afterschool activities against their will. Reasonings for this are: Many students have work outside of school and have no time, Many students play sports which is already considered an extracurricular activity, some students will resent extracurricular if they are forced to participate in them. On the other hand, colleges require a well rounded student who has taken extracurriculars. One reason that supports my claim is the fact that many high school students already work and they don t have the time for extracurriculars. According to an article by NewsOK, it states, The U.S. Census shows that more than 1 in 4 high school students age 16 and older work. This shows us that a good amount of students are already occupied outside of school by work alone. Meaning that students who work would not have the time to join extracurriculars and it would be unjust to force a student to join one. A student who works and has school is already learning very valuable lessons and ideas about the real world and what it takes to keep and maintain a job and they pick up many skills by doing this. • 17. The Role Of Female Power In Carmilla And Snow, Glass Apples Female power is suppressed by men in vampire literature. I will analyze the idea of women treated as inferior by men through psychoanalysis mainly based on Freudian concepts. The topics of psychoanalysis that I will be using to look at the texts are the monstrous feminine , the castration complex, and masculine instinct. The two texts that will be analyzed are the short stories Carmilla and Snow, Glass, Apples . The short story Carmilla was written by Joseph LeFanu in 1871. This was during the Victorian Era where strict laws of gender roles and sexuality were present. For example, Being forward in the company of men suggested a worrying sexual appetite (web p 1). This information is important to the story because the character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carmilla rebels against Victorian society gender roles and this concept of representing homosexuality through a vampire monster shows that men fear women showing power through sexuality and feel the need to destroy it. The short story Snow, Glass, Apples was written by Neil Gaiman in 1994. The story is a re telling of the fairy tale Snow White from the step mother s perspective. Gaiman is considered a feminist writer and this is shown in Snow, Glass, Apples where he brings awareness to the removal of women s power by men in vampire text. In 1990, third wave feminism had just begun. This wave involved eschewing victimization and defining feminine beauty for themselves as subjects, not as objects of a sexist patriarchy (Rampton 1). This differs from Carmilla because LeFanu supports oppression of females while Gaiman is a feminist aiming to expose stereotypes of gender roles. Female sexuality is condemned in Snow, Glass, Apples by displaying women who only take interest in pleasuring men, and not themselves. In the story, the queen talks about her husband and says when he wanted me he would send for me, and I would go to him, and pleasure him, and take my pleasure with him (Gaiman 2). Also, when the stepmother becomes Queen and leads her people, it is because the King died and not because she earned it. With a sudden rise to power after the end of the Persian War, Athens became a naval superpower in control of many other city states in the Delian alliance that struck fear into their rival, the Spartans, who believed that the Athenians might destroy Sparta s control over their own alliance. Becoming as powerful as Athens did, the city state became power hungry and led the Greeks into long years of turmoil, leading to the end of the Golden Age. Allied with city states from northern Greece, the islands of the Aegean Sea, and along the Ionian coast, this alliance was built on naval power. By controlling the seas and most coastal regions Athens created a global super power that could rival Sparta s alliance in size and strength, intimidating the other nation. It began as a democratic alliance... (Hunt 79), but Athens soon took complete control of the allies, because the city state was allowed to command and set up all of the league s financial arrangements for the naval fleet. Around three hundred city states paid dues according to its size to the Athenians, who in turn were in charge of how the dues were spent. Most of the dues that were not already paid in the form of triremes were spent on building the boat and paying the oarsmen. It was through this line of work and amount of income, gaining both income and political influence, that the poor citizens were eager to expand Athens s power over other Greeks (Hunt 80). For instance, a study conducted by Canadian Boreal Initiative on Counting Canada s Natural Capital estimated the total economic value of boreal ecosystem services (both market and non market values) in the year 2002 as 750 billion CAD which would equate to 61 percent of the value of Canada s GDP (as of 2002). Furthermore, on comparing the values, it was found that total non market value of boreal ecosystem services is 13.8 times greater than the net market value of boreal natural capital extraction. The results imply that economic, ecological and social benefits of boreal forest systems in their pristine state, may be significantly greater than the market values derived from current industrial development forestry, oil and gas, mining, and hydroelectric energy combined. Secondly, the regeneration capacity of these forests are very low so the trees once destroyed, would take much longer to grow back than forests in tropical regions. • 21. Gender Bias In The Elizabethan Era In England The issue of gender bias has been in play in every society since the creation of man. After mankind had sinned, eating the fruit, God punished man, woman and serpent. To the woman, He said Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you. (Genesis 3:16b). In each society, however, men and women played different roles. Although I don t necessarily disagree with the gender bias that exists and has existed, I am still shocked at how differently people of different genders lived differently in the past. My opinion is that people are making gender bias in the world today much worse than it seems. This can be seen history, biblical events and personal experience. In the Elizabethan Era in England, there was a great difference between the treatment of men and women. Elizabethan women were to be subservient to men and relied on a male relative to support them. After a marriage, the women were expected to run households and take care of children. On the other hand, men dealt their jobs and were allowed to go around and have fun. Women in this era were, although treated with respect, still somewhat looked down on and it was very difficult for a woman without a male relative to live well. This is very different from today s society, as there are many independent women living around the world. I am quite shocked at the way the Elizabethan women had practically no say in things, as in many cultures, and that they had no choice over their marriage. Everything ... Dr Manette A Tale Of Two Cities It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (pg 3) For some of the characters in this story, it was the best of times while for others, it was the worst of times. Dr. Manette s internal struggle is focused more around his horrible past where he was forced by the Marquis family to help out a dying woman and her stabbed brother. After being mentally scarred by what he had seen, he tried to write a letter to the Minister of state explaining what he had witnessed, but then he was stopped by the Marquis family and then wrongfully thrown into prison. This devastated him and left him with a wrecked mental state and most of his memories of his family lost. Throughout the story, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, we see some characters ... He was in such bad condition that he referred to himself as cell 105 North Tower (Where he was kept in prison) and didn t recognize his daughter when she came to find him. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Three fundamental changes have occurred during the Renaissance; Aristotle portrayed the understanding of the universe, Galen described the importance of medicine and to understand astronomy Ptolemy described it. In 200 years there has been a revolutionary change, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton have replaced Ptolemy in astronomy. Galileo has replaced Aristotle in physics. Harvey has replaced Galen in medicine. The three ancient authorities have been over thrown. In Rene Descartes Discourse on Method he expresses his disappointment with traditional philosophy and with the limitations of theology; only logic, geometry and algebra hold his respect, because of the utter certainty which they can offer us. Unfortunately, because they depend on hypotheses, they cannot tell us what is real, i.e. what the world is really like. Therefore Descartes suggests a method of thought combining the consistency of mathematics but based on natural truths about what is real, basic knowledge which could not be wrong (like the axioms of geometry). He calls into question everything that he thinks he has learned through his senses but rests his entire system on the one truth that he cannot doubt, namely, the reality of his own mind and the radical difference between the mental and the physical aspects of the world. Social Media and Social Protest A growing body of literature examines the relationship between environmental protest and news media representation with special emphasis on how these formations relate to and affect the public and politics. The nature of our research is such that we are going to use a multitheoretical approach. Space does not permit to review all the work done on this matter, but we have selected various key perspectives needed for understanding the mechanisms of framing and media bias in the reporting of protest events. We briefly review the more relevant perspectives that have guided our assessment of the evidence and that were endorsed in our findings. Protest logic and mediation opportunity structure Various Studies have showed that media display an inherent bias against social protests, reflecting elite interests, primarily by focusing on incidents of violence rather than on the message these protest groups try to convey. Eldridge argues that what is being presented as neutral reporting is in fact an array of codes and practices which effectively rest upon a cultural imperative to hear the causes of disputes in one way rather than another , meaning that Media are not neutral unselective recorders of events (Oliver and Maney, 2000: 464) Mainstream media predominantly tend to focus on violence and on the spectacular rather than on the message being conveyed . However, imagine a specialist explaining to you, the patient, that your symptoms of a cough, chest congestion, and fatigue are merely illusions created in the mind, to which the cure is overcoming your mental belief that you are sick at all. This alternative idea of disease and treatment comes from the religion of Christian Science, and along with its highly controversial healing practices, the church demonstrates two bioethical issues: are people seeking treatment in the church due to frustration with the current medical system, or are members afraid to seek professional medical help due to disapproval from the church? In examining these issues, first, the Christian Science doctrine must be understood, then the history surrounding the religion s creation, and finally how the two tie into today s bioethical problems. To begin, the Christian Science religion shares some similarities with the other Judeo Christian religions in that they utilize the same Bible, and claim to follow the same God. However, the Christian Science religion contrasts sharply in most other aspects, especially in the ideas surrounding the perfection of God s creation. For example, in the Protestant denominations, man is considered flawed due ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Titanic Persuasive Speech 85 years. 85 years is the average lifespan of a human, according to the Social Security Administration. Humans as individuals are not around for an exorbitant amount of time. The heartwarming, yet devastating 1997 film Titanic, by James Cameron, as well as, the spunky and rebellious quote, If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun , by Katherine Hepburn, reflect the idea that even though life a short, why not make it a good time? James Cameron in his film, Titanic, portrays two characters, Jack and Rose, who long for adventure. Jack Dawson is a young, penniless artist, who has nothing to his name except the clothes on his back, his sketchpad, and a couple bucks in his pocket. After spending time drawing his way through Europe, Jack ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of them being, Rose and Jack throughout the movie come to reach a level of maturity and find that some rules should indeed be followed. After the Titanic goes down, but before Jack s tragic and untimely death, Jack and Rose made each other a promise. Jack pleaded to Rose as he hung in the freezing water, Never let go. With fear he may not make it she replied, I ll never let go Jack, I ll never let go. In that moment Rose and Jack realized the only way to have fun is not to break rules. They gave each other the rule to never let go, and that is a rule they will always follow since it unfortunately followed them to the grave. While Rose and Jack were able to reach this level of maturity, Hepburn s quote does not indicated any possible maturity, only rebellion. Her quote focuses on having fun, and not caring what rules try and stop her. There are some rules, that need to be followed simply for reasons, such as safety and respect. Her quote, however, shows no remorse for breaking rules. While this is a good thing in some cases, others in is not. Unlike Rose and Jack, it is uncertain based on the quote if Hepburn ever reached that level of maturity to know when rules should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition Stalin ignored intelligence concerning the German invasion plans. Thus the issue here is to reflect on just how the Russians managed to become one of the victor nations. Among the factors one would include: the central organisation of resources which gave the nation the ability to resist; the large scale mobilisation of resources, especially the placing of women in the workforce to release males for army service; the partial reconciliation with the Church; Stalin s rapid use of his ... The Soviet army was modernised and this transformation resulted in better performance in battle with fewer losses in 1941 six or seven Soviet tanks were lost for every German one; by 1944 the ratio was down to one to one. • 44. Monarch Butterflies Population Decline The population numbers of the beloved Monarch Butterfly are rapidly decreasing, and scientists are working hard this September to save the species. Monarch butterflies depend solely on the milkweed plant to survive. Milkweed, however, has been disappearing like crazy due especially to increased use of the weed killer Roundup over the past ten to twenty years. That, combined with more general trends of habitat loss, various effects of climate change, and challenges like the drought in California, has spelled out around a ninety percent population decline for monarchs in the past twenty years. Scientists currently estimate a global population of around 33 million monarch butterflies, down from over one billion in the past. Monarch Migration Season ... • 47. Causes And Effects Of Coral Reefs Ground water contamination, damage to coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove ecosystems, salinization of soils and damage to vegetation, tsunami generated waste and debris, impacts on sewage collection and treatment systems, damage to protected areas, coastline erosion and inundation, changes in river hydrology, and loss of livelihoods based on natural resources or ecosystem services are all examples of damage caused by a tsunami. Coral reefs are natural breakwaters for a tsunami wave as it moves towards the coastline. The December 2004 Indonesian earthquake tsunami devastated coral reefs around Indian Ocean coastlines. Four years after the tsunami, the healthy corals were still regenerating. Due to the increase of sedimentation, it doesn t allow light from the sun to penetrate through the water. It is crucial for coral reefs to get sunlight for reproduction. Another major issue is the amount of debris from land bulldozes habitats. Within minutes, most of the seawater that destroyed coastal communities returned to the ocean, bringing untold tons of stuff with it; all the remnants of humanity including pieces of buildings, cars, trees, garbage, huge amounts of plastics, eroded soils and likely a wide variety of pollutants from those soils, homes, factories, stores, etc. Then there are the plastics and non biodegradable junk that will initially pollute the coastlines and will then move out to sea, eventually reaching the north Pacific and the western shores of North ... • 48. Negative Benefits Of Technology In today s society, technology is looked at in usually two different ways. It can be looked down upon or highly praised by many. Back then authors predicted and wrote about some technological advancements that are either portrayed as a helpful or detrimental. Two prime examples of this are There Will Come Soft Rains and Fahrenheit 451 , both pieces of literature written by Ray Bradbury. Technology is usually praised by the masses due to the countless medical advancements, its positive effect on the education around the world, and its assistance with certain tasks. However, some people might think otherwise. On the technological advancements in the medical viewpoint, there are many, benefits to society. The most obvious one is the curing or the treatment of diseases. Vaccines are one of the greatest advancements to mankind. Visiting your Doctor is an advancement of itself, but vaccines are very helpful to our society. Some diseases that were life threatening in the past are no longer an issue. Furthermore, some diseases basically faded out of existence. Other technological advancements are the machinery that hospitals use on their patients. For example, a linear accelerator is used to perform radiotherapy on patients that have some sort of cancer. It should be noted that the other Arctic states, the Arctic Council, and none of the indigenous population were involved in the meeting. Some question how an Antarctic Treaty System could be so direct and successful in protecting the area, while the Arctic groups and legislation struggle to determine power, rights, and ruling jurisdiction. The most obvious differences between the two territories are that the Antarctic is a continent surrounded by water with no permanent residents, while the Arctic is a body of water surrounded by land with an indigenous population. Although some argue that they have very similar environments, the difference in physical geography and topography is what results in such monumental differences in their treatment in international politics. The political geography of the Arctic Circle contributes to the application of the Law of Seas (UNCLOS III), whereas in the Antarctic there are no sovereignty claims and therefore no single country or combination of countries can claim jurisdiction over parts of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean. To round out the Antarctic Treaty, three more international treaties were created to fully protect the Antarctic environment and the waters surrounding it, this includes the 1972 Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals, the 1980 Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, and the 1988 Convention on the Regulation of Antarctic Mineral Resource Activities (Koivurova, 2005, 209).
