In the 1800 s there were very few major towns in the Ozarks and many of the
people relied on the mills and church to hear about news and to tell their own
stories. Wright harnesses this key factor of the Ozarks to set up several scenes
with Jed Holland and Young Matt. The mill is also the place where Young Matt
shows off to the people and gives Wash Gibbs motivation to get back at him and
his close friends (Chapter 10). This wouldn t be possible without the idea of an
entire community coming together to gather at the mill and show off to one
