NORMAL
CONSISTENCY
AIM
To Determine the normal
consistency of the given cement paste
appratus
 The Vicat appratus
 Ordinary portland cement
 Weighing balance
 Measuring cyclinder
PROCEDURE
 Take about 500grms of cement.
 Add weighed quantity of water {say about 25% by
weight of cement} for the first trial and prepare a
paste in a standard manner.
 Fill the paste into vicat mould with in 3 to 5
minutes
 Shake the mould to expel air and level the top
surface of the paste
 A Standard plunger 10mm diameter and 50mm
length is attached and brought down to touch the
surface of the paste and quickly released allowing
it to sink into the paste by its own weight.
 By taking reading by noting the depth of
pentraction of the plunzer.
 Conduct a second trial by adding water of 27%
by weight of cement and findout the depth of
penteraction of plunzer.
 Similarly conduct trials with higher percentages of
water till such time the plunzer penatrates for a
depth of 33 to 35mmfrom top of mould
 That perticular percentage of water which allows
the plenzer to penatrate only to a depth of 33 to
35mm from top of mould is know as the
percentage of water required to produce a cement
paste of standard consistency . This percentage is
usually denoted as ‘P’
RESULT
 The standard consistency of the given cement
sample is ________
