The document defines an informal or friendly letter and discusses its key parts and language. It notes that a letter represents a company's public image and competence and is more formal than emails or memos. The main parts of a letter are identified as the heading, salutation, body, closing, and signature. The body includes an introduction to greet the recipient and state the purpose, a main section to develop the topic, and a conclusion to signal the end through invitations or greetings. Examples of openings, closings, and ways to signal the end of the letter are also provided.
This document discusses reading strategies for skimming and scanning. Skimming allows readers to quickly gather important information from a passage without understanding every word. Scanning is used to find specific information quickly by ignoring unrelated details. The document provides examples of when to use skimming and scanning and steps for how to skim and scan a text effectively. It also includes practice examples to demonstrate skimming and scanning techniques.

Dear Jenny,
I am currently staying with my aunt in Sengkang. I came to help her with some home renovations for a few days. Yesterday we painted the entire living room which was tiring work! Tomorrow we will be installing new flooring.
I've been enjoying exploring Sengkang in my free time. The parks here are lovely for taking walks. It's been nice catching up with my aunt too.
I will be taking the train back home on Saturday afternoon once we've
The document discusses the writing process and how it is recursive and iterative. It describes the five main stages of the writing process as: 1) prewriting to generate ideas, 2) drafting a first complete version, 3) revising to refine and improve the draft, 4) editing for grammar, spelling and punctuation, and 5) publishing the final version. Within prewriting, it outlines techniques like freewriting, brainstorming, questioning, clustering and Venn diagrams to develop topics.
The document discusses different types of phrases in English grammar. There are two main types: noun phrases and adjective phrases. A noun phrase is a group of words that acts as a subject, object, or complement and includes modifiers and determiners. An adjective phrase is a group of words that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun, consisting of an adjective and any additional modifiers. Common examples of phrases are provided such as "a blue shirt" and "the big red apples."
This document discusses exclamations and interjections in grammar. It defines exclamations as sentences used to express strong emotions like surprise or shock, often with an exclamation point. Common exclamation structures include those using "how" or "what". Examples are provided like "How beautifully she sings!" or "What amazing car!". Interjections are more common in speaking and express emotions briefly through sounds like "ouch" or "hooray". The document stresses that interjections are distinct from exclamations.
This document discusses different types of conjunctions. It defines conjunctions as words that connect sentences, clauses, or groups of words. The main types discussed are coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, correlative conjunctions, and conjunctive adverbs. Coordinating conjunctions give equal importance to the words or sentences they connect, while subordinating conjunctions introduce subordinate clauses and join them to main clauses. Correlative conjunctions connect two balanced clauses or phrases, and conjunctive adverbs connect two sentences together with added meaning. Examples of each type are provided.
A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one dependent clause. A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete thought and must be attached to an independent clause. There are two patterns for writing complex sentences: pattern one uses a comma to separate the dependent clause, which comes first, from the independent clause. Pattern two does not use a comma, with the independent clause coming first followed by the dependent clause. Common words like although, before, and when can make a clause dependent.

It explains that informal language is more casual and is appropriate for situations like talking with friends, family members, or peers, while formal language follows etiquette rules and is appropriate for situations like talking with people in positions of authority or people you don't know well. It provides scenarios asking the reader to consider what kind of language would be suitable.
An idiom is a commonly used expression that has a special meaning different from the literal meaning of the words. Some examples of English idioms included in the document are "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" meaning having something certain is better than taking a risk, "a blessing in disguise" meaning something good that isn't recognized at first, and "actions speak louder than words" meaning it is better to do something than just talk about it. The document provides explanations of over 30 common English idioms and their meanings.

An informal letter contains an address and date in the top right corner, followed by a salutation like "Dear" and the recipient's name with a comma. The content includes an introductory paragraph, 2-4 body paragraphs discussing the message or details, and a concluding paragraph that wraps up the main idea. The letter ends with a closing like "Love," or "Best wishes," followed by a comma.
A clause contains both a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence, while a phrase lacks both a subject and verb and cannot stand alone.
