This document discusses reading strategies for skimming and scanning. Skimming allows readers to quickly gather important information from a passage without understanding every word. Scanning is used to find specific information quickly by ignoring unrelated details. The document provides examples of when to use skimming and scanning and steps for how to skim and scan a text effectively. It also includes practice examples to demonstrate skimming and scanning techniques.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

2. Skimming and scanning are very
rapid reading methods in which
you glance at a passage to find
specific information. These
reading methods make it easier
for you to grasp large amounts
of material, especially when
you're previewing. They are also
useful when you don't need to
know every word.
Skimming and scanning are especially valuable when there is
only one item of information that you need to find from a
particular passage.
3. Skimming is used to quickly gather the most important
information or ‘gist’. It’s not essential to understand each
word when you are skimming.
Run your eyes over the text, noting important information.
Use skimming to quickly get up to speed on a current business
situation.
4. Examples of Skimming:Examples of Skimming:
The Newspaper – to quickly get the
general news of the day
Magazines – to quickly discover which
articles you would like to read in more detail
Business and Travel Brochures – to
quickly get informed
5. How to Skim? How to Skim?
Working quickly…
1. Read the title if there is one.
2. Read the introduction or the first paragraph if there is one.
3. Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
4. Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
5. Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
6. Read the summary or last paragraph if there is one.

Choose a heading that best matches the
upcoming paragraph. Remember to
underline your key words.
• Parents are to blame for the state of
children today.
• A report with many conclusions and worries
about the United Kingdom.
• Growing up unhappy generation
• There are so many social problems young
people face today.

passage.passage.
In recent years, evidence has been collected which suggests that the
proportion of British children and teenagers who are unhappy is higher
than in many other developed countries around the world. For
example, a recently published report set out to measure ‘ well-being’
among young people in nineteen European countries, found that the
United Kingdom came bottom. The report was based on statistics and
surveys in which young people answered questions on a wide range of
subject. The United Kingdom is a relatively unequal country with a
relatively high proportion of young people living in households. With
less than half the national average income. This seems to have a negative
effect on how they feel about themselves.
So what’s our answer?
Choose the heading that best matches the previous paragraph.
a. Parents are to blame for the state of children today
b. A report with many conclusions and worries about the United Kingdom
c. Growing up unhappy generation
d. There are so many social problems young people face today

Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want
to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a
question in your mind and you read a passage only to find
the answer, ignoring unrelated information.
10. How to scanHow to scan
1. State the specific information you are looking for.
1. Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what
clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For
example, if you were looking for a certain date, you
would quickly read the paragraph looking only for
numbers.
1. Use headings and any other aids that will help you
identify which sections might contain the information you
are looking for.
1. Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.

6. How long does the offer last?
12. ConclusionsConclusions
Skimming and scanning is used when reading all
types of documents.
We skim to get the idea of what a document is
about and typically skim all documents before we
actually begin to read.
As we skim, we…
think about the topic
think about what we already know about the topic
start to guess or anticipate the details we are going
to read about.
We scan for specific information.
We work quickly when we skim and scan.
Editor's Notes
Hi … welcome to EPA Reading Module one. This is a ppt on skimming and scanning, a key reading comprehension skill
Notice the image of the stop watch. It’s there because skimming and scanning is about working quickly to get the information you need from a document.
AS you run your eyes over text, notice key vocabulary words, not worry about grammar words. What do the key words make you think about. Do you already know something abut this? When we skim, we prepare to read.
An example of skimming is…current business situation
Other examples
We skim all sorts of documents. Here are some tips on skimming. As you skim, make connections with the information – what do you know about this? Can you compare it to something you know? Think of it as preparing to read in depth. When a house is constructed, the builders need to have an idea about the house – they need to know what the house will look like before they start looking at the details of the plan.
You know what information you want before you start to read.
