TRENDS IN RESEARCH WRITING
The Past The Future
The Past and Future of Academic Publishing
You must publish in English
• International language of
academics
• Become an effective
communicator
• Funding
• International reputation
• Advance your career
Why?
6
• Global spending on research and development (R&D),
totaling US$1.1 trillion in 2007, double the amount in
1996
• Between 2000 and 2010, the number of science and
engineering graduate students rose 30 percent, and the
number of postdocs increased 45 percent
• 24,000+ peer reviewed journals, 2000+ publishers,
1.5 million+ papers published per year, 3 million+ papers
submitted per year: increased 44% since 2001
More money more people

In 1911, Rutherford discovered that atoms have a nucleus – a breakthrough
discovery
In 2012, evidence was found to prove the existence of the Higgs boson
The experiment was completed by Rutherford,
1 post doc, and 1 undergraduate
The experiment was completed by
2500+ physicists around the world

CONSEQUENCES
In the News
About 30 retractions in 2000 to over 400 retractions in 2011
Scientific fraud: 67% of 2000 retractions in Pubmed were due to misconduct
• 43% due to fraud
• 14% due to duplication publication
• 10% due to plagiarism
Possible reasons:
• Increased competition for funds
• Grants becoming a metric for research assessment
• Strong publication record = large publication record
• Journal emphasis on novel and exciting results
• Inadequate checks
12
This system produces researchers who:
Are passionate about their work
• Shinya Yamanaka, the recent Nobel prize winner
Treat research as a task for career progression
• A professor who is more interested in teaching than research but
must show a good publication record to be promoted
Are forced to research
• In China, doctors must produce 2 papers each year
Researcher goals

Build HabitsCreate your
own writing
ritual
Read and
Write
every day
Practical Habits
Writing Rituals
• Earnest Hemmingway wrote standing up at his typewriter
– James Joyce wrote lying down in bed
• Maya Angelou leaves her house at 5am and goes to a hotel to
write
• Demosthenes of Ancient Greece shaved half of his head while he
was writing, so that he wouldn’t be tempted to go out and
socialize.
• Victor Hugo (Les Miserable) threw away his clothes so he couldn’t
leave the house even if he wanted to
• Honore de Balzac drank 50 cups of coffee per day
What do they all have in common?
Writing Rituals cont’d
The big secret to writing rituals and self-
discipline in general:
Intentionally limit the number of decisions
that have to be made.
• All the energy and willpower we use
deciding where and when to write can be
used for actual writing.
Write (and read) every day
• Keep two (2) journals
– One digital (for scientific writing and exercises)
– One long hand (for noting down common vocabulary and
expressions as you read journal articles in your field).

Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the
source. They must match the source document word for word and must be
attributed to the original author.
Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own
words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source.
Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking a
somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly.
Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words,
including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute
summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter
than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.
Quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing

A compound-complex sentence has at least three clauses, at
least two of which are independent.
Information and communication technology is reaching out
to help people in the poorest countries improve their lives;
for example, fishermen on the Bay of Bengal can now receive
online weather reports that tell them when it is safe to go
out.
The worldwide reach of the Internet is also providing
employment opportunities in developing countries, and as
greater numbers of people learn the technology these
opportunities will expand.

Incorporating Sadistics Statistics
Writing with Statistics
1. Never use a statistical
procedure you don't fully
understand
2. Present only as much
information as needed so that
your reader can make his or her
own interpretation of your data
3. Use graphics and tables
97
Overview of common statistical tests:
http://www.graphpad.com/support/faqid/1790/
1. If you used a statistic, you need to provide your audience with
additional information including where the statistic came from
• Poor example: The ten largest cities in the U.S. comprised 54% of
the total U.S. population.
• Better example: According to the United States Census Bureau, in
2000, the ten largest cities in the U.S. comprised 54% of the total
U.S. population.
2. When using inferential statistics, try to speak as plainly as possible, and
put the statistics at the end of the sentence (with significance level)
Writing with Statistics
• Statistical procedures that we use to describe the population we are
studying. The data could be collected from either a sample or a
population, but the results help us organize and describe data.
• Descriptive statistics can only be used to describe the group that is being
studied. That is, the results cannot be generalized to any larger group.
• Descriptive statistics are useful and serviceable if you do not need to
extend your results to any larger group. However, much of social sciences
tend to include studies that give us “universal” truths about segments of
the population, such as all parents, all women, all victims, etc.
• Frequency distributions, measures of central tendency (mean, median,
and mode), and graphs like pie charts and bar charts that describe the
data are all examples of descriptive statistics.
Descriptive Statistics
Descriptive statistics
Usually there is no good way to write a statistic. If you are citing several
statistics about the same topic, it may be best to include them all in the same
paragraph or section.
• The mean of exam 2 is 77.7. The median is 75, and the mode is 79. Exam
2 had a standard deviation of 11.6.
• Overall, the company had another excellent year. We shipped 14.3 ton of
fertilizer for the year, and averaged 1.7 ton of fertilizer during the
summer months. This is an increase over last year, where we shipped
only 13.1 ton of fertilizer, and averaged only 1.4 ton during the summer
months. (Standard deviations were as follows: this summer 0.3 ton, last
summer 0.4 ton).
Some fields prefer to put means and standard deviations in parentheses like
this:
• Group A (87.5) scored higher than group B (77.9) while both had similar
standard deviations (8.3 and 7.9 respectively).
100
• Concerned with making predictions or inferences about a population from observations
and analyses of a sample. That is, we can take the results of an analysis using a sample
and can generalize it to the larger population that the sample represents.
• To make generalizations it is imperative that the sample is representative of the group to
which it is being generalized.
• To address the issue of generalization, there are tests of significance. A Chi-square or T-
test, for example, can tell us the probability that the results of our analysis on the sample
are representative of the population that the sample represents.
• These tests of significance tell us the probability that the results of the analysis could
have occurred by chance when there is no relationship at all between the variables we
studied in the population we studied.
• Examples of inferential statistics include linear regression analyses, logistic regression
analyses, ANOVA, correlation analyses, structural equation modeling, and survival
analysis, to name a few.
Inferential Statistics
Inferential Statistics
In general, you should always 'translate' your statistics into
some understandable form for your reader.
• Poor example: A t-test (t = 3.59) showed that the two
groups were significantly different (p<0.01).
• Better example: Women scored higher than men on
the aptitude test (t = 3.89, p < 0.01).

Cooperative Congressional Election Study.34 Based on 13 questions
related to policy preferences asked on this survey, the policy
preferences of the top 2 percent of income earners (a group that
might be thought to be “truly wealthy”) are much more highly
significantly related with the policy preferences of the top 10 percent
of earners than with the policy preferences of the average survey
respondent (r5.91 versus .69).35 Thus, the policy preferences of our
moderately high-income “affluent” respondents appear to fully
describe useful information about the policy preferences of the truly
wealthy.

  • 97. Writing with Statistics 1. Never use a statistical procedure you don't fully understand 2. Present only as much information as needed so that your reader can make his or her own interpretation of your data 3. Use graphics and tables 97 Overview of common statistical tests: http://www.graphpad.com/support/faqid/1790/
  • 98. 1. If you used a statistic, you need to provide your audience with additional information including where the statistic came from • Poor example: The ten largest cities in the U.S. comprised 54% of the total U.S. population. • Better example: According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2000, the ten largest cities in the U.S. comprised 54% of the total U.S. population. 2. When using inferential statistics, try to speak as plainly as possible, and put the statistics at the end of the sentence (with significance level) Writing with Statistics
  • 99. • Statistical procedures that we use to describe the population we are studying. The data could be collected from either a sample or a population, but the results help us organize and describe data. • Descriptive statistics can only be used to describe the group that is being studied. That is, the results cannot be generalized to any larger group. • Descriptive statistics are useful and serviceable if you do not need to extend your results to any larger group. However, much of social sciences tend to include studies that give us “universal” truths about segments of the population, such as all parents, all women, all victims, etc. • Frequency distributions, measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), and graphs like pie charts and bar charts that describe the data are all examples of descriptive statistics. Descriptive Statistics
  • 100. Descriptive statistics Usually there is no good way to write a statistic. If you are citing several statistics about the same topic, it may be best to include them all in the same paragraph or section. • The mean of exam 2 is 77.7. The median is 75, and the mode is 79. Exam 2 had a standard deviation of 11.6. • Overall, the company had another excellent year. We shipped 14.3 ton of fertilizer for the year, and averaged 1.7 ton of fertilizer during the summer months. This is an increase over last year, where we shipped only 13.1 ton of fertilizer, and averaged only 1.4 ton during the summer months. (Standard deviations were as follows: this summer 0.3 ton, last summer 0.4 ton). Some fields prefer to put means and standard deviations in parentheses like this: • Group A (87.5) scored higher than group B (77.9) while both had similar standard deviations (8.3 and 7.9 respectively). 100
  • 101. • Concerned with making predictions or inferences about a population from observations and analyses of a sample. That is, we can take the results of an analysis using a sample and can generalize it to the larger population that the sample represents. • To make generalizations it is imperative that the sample is representative of the group to which it is being generalized. • To address the issue of generalization, there are tests of significance. A Chi-square or T- test, for example, can tell us the probability that the results of our analysis on the sample are representative of the population that the sample represents. • These tests of significance tell us the probability that the results of the analysis could have occurred by chance when there is no relationship at all between the variables we studied in the population we studied. • Examples of inferential statistics include linear regression analyses, logistic regression analyses, ANOVA, correlation analyses, structural equation modeling, and survival analysis, to name a few. Inferential Statistics
  • 102. Inferential Statistics In general, you should always 'translate' your statistics into some understandable form for your reader. • Poor example: A t-test (t = 3.59) showed that the two groups were significantly different (p<0.01). • Better example: Women scored higher than men on the aptitude test (t = 3.89, p < 0.01). 102
