Virtualized storage is fast becoming the new norm.
Nobody can justify provisioning non-production environments the way they did up to now.
This presentation is about how Delphix removes the biggest bottleneck in IT operations, development, and QA by virtualizing data. It identifies the bottleneck and the impact on IT, then describes how Delphix removes it to enable DevOps continuous delivery.
QCon London Presentation - 3/8/16
Abstract:
On December 24th, 2012 ASW US-EAST1 experienced a region-wide failure that took down the Netflix service for almost 24 hours. Knowing that failure is inevitable in any complex system we evolved our cloud-based, micro-service architecture to support multi-region traffic management and failover capabilities. With that foundation in place we drove initiatives to achieve service ubiquity and rapid global expansion. The overarching theme is #NetflixEverywhere - an amazing, global, highly available movie and TV streaming experience for any member, anytime, on any device, anywhere in the world.
Building and evolving a pervasive, global service requires a multi-disciplined approach that balances requirements around service availability, latency, data replication, compute capacity, and efficiency. In this session, we’ll follow the Netflix journey of failure, innovation, and ubiquity. We'll review the many facets of globalization then delve deep into the architectural patterns that enable seamless, multi-region traffic management, reliable, fast data propagation, and efficient service infrastructure. The patterns presented will be broadly applicable to internet services with global aspirations.
This presentation aims to help developers become more efficient at understanding the causes of bugs and the benefits of zeroing in on bugs in a quick manner. Tony Brown, Technical Director at Space 48, will discuss general techniques, a specific debugging strategy, and walk through practical examples of how these techniques save time.
Simplicity, ease of use, clean syntax and clear semantics are the characteristics of a good DSL that enable the users to focus on the problem. It is non-trivial to define, develop and maintain a DSL, especially using traditional compiler techniques. The Ruby programming language solves this issue to a certain extent.
Topics Covered
* Fundamentals of DSLs.
* Introduction of Ruby features for writing DSLs.
* Writing a DSL - The speakers' experience, with examples.
* Challenges and Issues.

CPN208 Failures at Scale & How to Ride Through Them - AWS re: Invent 2012Amazon Web Services
At scale, rare and unexpected events will happen. Things eventually will go wrong. This talk dives into what can go wrong at scale and how to architect applications to ride through disaster obliviously. We’ll talk about AWS infrastructure design including Regions and Availability Zones and show how applications can be written and operated to best exploit this industry-unique infrastructure redundancy model. Believing that experience is one of the best teachers, we will go through some of the more interesting and educational industry post mortems including some experienced at AWS to motivate these application design decisions and show how they can mitigate the damage of the truly unexpected.

Description
Abstract: Although recent improvements of the Cog VM performance made it one of the fastest available Smalltalk virtual machine, the overhead compared to optimized C code remains important. Efficient industrial object oriented virtual machine, such as Javascript V8's engine for Google Chrome and Oracle Java Hotspot can reach on many benchs the performance of optimized C code thanks to adaptive optimizations performed their JIT compilers. The VM becomes then cleverer, and after executing numerous times the same portion of codes, it stops the code execution, looks at what it is doing and recompiles critical portion of codes in code faster to run based on the current environment and previous executions.
Bio: Clément Béra and Eliot Miranda has been working together on Cog's JIT performance for the last year. Clément Béra is a young engineer and has been working in the Pharo team for the past two years. Eliot Miranda is a Smalltalk VM expert who, among others, has implemented Cog's JIT and the Spur Memory Manager for Cog.
VoltDB and Erlang: two very promising beasts, made for the new parallel world, but still lingering in the wings. Not only are they addressing todays challenges but they are using parallel architectures as corner stone of their new and surprising approach to be faster and more productive. What are they good for? Why are we working to team them up?
Erlang promises faster implementation, way better maintenance and 4 times shorter code. VoltDB claims to be two orders of magnitude faster than its competitors. The two share many similarities: both are the result of scientific research and designed from scratch to address the new reality of parallel architectures with full force.
This talk presents the case for Erlang as server language, where it shines, how it looks, and how to get started. It details Erlang's secret sauce: microprocesses, actors, atoms, immutable variables, message passing and pattern matching. (Note: for a longer version of this treatment of Erlang only see: Why Erlang? http://www.slideshare.net/eonblast/why-erlang-gdc-online-2012)
VoltDB's inner workings are explained to understand why it can be so incredibly fast and still better than its NoSQL competitors. The well publicized Node.js benchmark clocking in at 695,000 transactions per second is described and the simple steps to get VoltDB up and running to see the prodigy from up close.
Source examples are presented that show Erlang and VoltDB in action.
The speaker is creator and maintainer of the Erlang VoltDB driver Erlvolt.

Art of refactoring - Code Smells and Microservices AntipatternsEl Mahdi Benzekri
Refactoring is the process of improving the code without creating new functionality or changing an existing functionality.
Writing simple and avoiding complexity is the key to a good software design, changing the code become easier.
Code smells are undesired patterns that negatively affect software.
A survey about bad smells in Microservices architecture is presented with relevant examples and solutions.

Launch Your Streaming Platforms in MinutesRoshan Dwivedi
The claim of launching a streaming platform in minutes might be a bit of an exaggeration, but there are services that can significantly streamline the process. Here's a breakdown:
Pros of Speedy Streaming Platform Launch Services:
No coding required: These services often use drag-and-drop interfaces or pre-built templates, eliminating the need for programming knowledge.
Faster setup: Compared to building from scratch, these platforms can get you up and running much quicker.
All-in-one solutions: Many services offer features like content management systems (CMS), video players, and monetization tools, reducing the need for multiple integrations.
Things to Consider:
Limited customization: These platforms may offer less flexibility in design and functionality compared to custom-built solutions.
Scalability: As your audience grows, you might need to upgrade to a more robust platform or encounter limitations with the "quick launch" option.
Features: Carefully evaluate which features are included and if they meet your specific needs (e.g., live streaming, subscription options).
Examples of Services for Launching Streaming Platforms:
Muvi [muvi com]
Uscreen [usencreen tv]
Alternatives to Consider:
Existing Streaming platforms: Platforms like YouTube or Twitch might be suitable for basic streaming needs, though monetization options might be limited.
Custom Development: While more time-consuming, custom development offers the most control and flexibility for your platform.
Overall, launching a streaming platform in minutes might not be entirely realistic, but these services can significantly speed up the process compared to building from scratch. Carefully consider your needs and budget when choosing the best option for you.
