- Glass has been produced for thousands of years, with the earliest glass objects dating back to around 3500 BC in Mesopotamia. Glass production expanded during the time of the Phoenicians and the Assyrian Empire in the late 2nd millennium BC. Different types of glass developed for various applications including soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass, lead glass, and opal glass. Modern glass is composed mainly of silica, soda, lime, and sometimes boron or lead and is produced through melting and quenching or sol-gel processing. Glass has many uses including containers, flat glass for windows, fiberglass, specialty glass, optics, electronics, and more.
