Building event-driven (Micro)Services with Apache Kafka
This talk begins with a short recap of how we created systems over the past 20 years, up to the current idea of building systems, using a Microservices architecture. What is a Microservices architecture and how does it differ from a Service-Oriented Architecture? Should you use traditional REST APIs to integrate services with each eachother in a Microservices Architecture? Or is it better to use a more loosely-coupled protocol? Answers to these and many other questions are provided. The talk will show how a distributed log (event hub) can help to create a central, persistent history of events and what benefits we achieve from doing so. Apache Kafka is a perfect match for building such an asynchronous, loosely-coupled event-driven backbone. Events trigger processing logic, which can be implemented in a more traditional as well as in a stream processing fashion. The talk shows the difference between a request-driven and event-driven communication and answers when to use which. It highlights how a modern stream processing systems can be used to hold state both internally as well as in a database and how this state can be used to further increase independence of other services, the primary goal of a Microservices architecture.

This document describes the Delta architecture, which unifies batch and streaming data processing. Delta achieves this through a continuous data flow model using structured streaming. It allows data engineers to read consistent data while being written, incrementally read large tables at scale, rollback in case of errors, replay and process historical data along with new data, and handle late arriving data without delays. Delta uses transaction logging, optimistic concurrency, and Spark to scale metadata handling for large tables. This provides a simplified solution to common challenges data engineers face.

Windows Server 2012
A server is a network computer that shares resources with and responds to requests from other computers on the network. When installing Windows Server 2012, there are three installation options: Server Core, Server with a GUI, and Minimal Server Interface. Server Core requires less disk space and has a smaller attack surface while Server with a GUI includes more graphical tools for management. The installation process involves inserting the installation media, selecting an installation option, and completing the setup process which reboots the server.

Recently Microsoft has been very active in its support for, and use of, REST as a mechanism for implementing services. This event will cover recent and forthcoming technologies for building services with SOAP and REST, and we’ll explain REST for the uninitiated.

Session 1: The SOAP Story
In this session we’ll do a lighting quick re-cap of what SOAP is, what specs surround it before looking at how far the SOAP programming model has come in Microsoft’s latest-and-greatest stack – Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) V3.5. We’ll talk about different approaches to building services and we’ll take a good look at the integration between WCF V3.5 and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) V3.5 which opens up a whole new way of implementing services.
Session 2: Time for a REST
Web applications have evolved; using technologies like AJAX and Silverlight they have rich client-side code that wants to consume services, but they prefer JSON, “plain xml” and REST. In this session we’ll introduce REST for the uninitiated, and we’ll demonstrate some of the new and forthcoming technology that Microsoft has for working with REST: WCF 3.5, Web3S, Windows Live Data, and Codename “Astoria”.

Microservices are a true hype these days. Netflix, Amazon, eBay, … are all using microservices, but why? The idea is simple; split your application into multiple services which can evolve autonomously through time. The name suggests to keep these services small. Conceptually this seems not all that different from a classical Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Nonetheless, microservices do offer a new perspective. A monolithic application is divided into a couple small services which can be independently developed, deployed and scaled. Flexibility is increased, but using this model also has some pitfalls.This session sheds a light on the microservices landscape; the key drivers for using the pattern, tooling to support development and maintenance, and the pros and cons that go with it. We’ll also introduce some key design principles that can be used in creating and modelling these modular enterprise applications.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
