Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 1. USING THE SPSS TO PRODUCE FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION TABLES
- 2. Data Entry Enter all the scores in one column of the data editor, probably var00001.
- 3. Data Analysis Click Analyze on the tool bar, select Descriptive Statistics, and click on Frequencies. Highlight the column label for the set of scores (var00001) in the left box and click the arrow to move it into the Variable box. Be sure that the option to Display Frequency Table is selected. Click OK.
- 4. SPSS Output The frequency distribution will list the score values in a column from smallest to largest. What are the other columns? The program does not group scores into class intervals. All values are listed.

- 11. Data Analysis Click Analyze on the tool bar, select Descriptive Statistics, and click on Descriptives. Highlight the column label for the set of scores (var00001) in the left box and click the arrow to move it into the Variable box. If you want summation of x as well as the mean, click on the Options box, select Sum, then click Continue. Click OK.
- 12. SPSS will produce a summary table listing : The number of scores (N) The maximum and minimum scores The sum of scores The mean The standard deviation
- 13. You can also do this… Click Analyze on the tool bar, select Descriptive Statistics, and click on Frequencies. Highlight the column label for the set of scores (var00001) in the left box and click the arrow to move it into the Variable box. Click on Statistics. Click on Mean, median, mode. Click percentile (if you need it). Click skewness. Click on Continue. Click OK.
- 14. For Nominal Data Assign a value for a label. Social Intelligence: 0 Loving: 1 Citizenship: 2 Appreciation of Beauty: 3
- 16. Go to View. Click on Variables. Click on Values. Fill up Value and Label, then click Add. Go to View and click Data.
