Introduce myself and what I do: Toastmaster journey; International connections; Instructional Designer
Acknowledge audience: connected we do amazing things; where are you located; what amazing connections;
TM prepares us to deliver great speeches and to practice the art of good leadership:
structure, flow, impact and delivery of speeches ( opening, body, conclusion – praise, point of improvement, praise)
How to be a connected leader
Briefly explain the focus points and the call to Action
Publish poll results to whiteboard
My experience with Toastmasters: Advanced Communicator Gold and Advanced Leader Bronze – aiming for Silver and DTM
My story of FLL : and how I joined TM
Explain motto and how that has guided my mission as a mentor, and how I would wish to be remembered.
How could this resonate for other connected educators and mentors?
Explain acronyms
TI 90th year celebrations in 2014 eg October events (clubs and districts)
New improved website – note Leadership Central and Where Leaders Are Made
Leadership roles within
a club: club officers – president, vp education, vp membership, treasurer, secretary, sergeant-at-arms
a district: district officers – area governors, division governors, district governors,
a region: regional advisors,
Note: Keynote George Saltsman at GEC Nov 18 – talked about global competencies for leaders
Recommend tapping into TI to improve leadership skills – esp. useful for connected educators who ‘share their voice’ publicly
Importance of belonging to a TM club, show how to find clubs. Demonstrate using a volunteered capital city.
Note: challenges for attending training for TMs in regional areas eg Area 43, each more than 40km apart (200-300km), need for more online opportunities.
Are you regionally based? Are you limited to conference or training opportunities?
What does Speechcraft mean to you?
Explain purpose: background experiences with Speechcraft programs; need for flexibility; need for tailoring to suit the audience; one size does not fit all.
Explore and Explain target participation: experienced Toastmasters delivering Speechcraft; tutors and mentors supporting students’ presentation projects; speakers in general who need speech training; Coaches in public speaking;
Role of Toastmasters International; inclusion of Speechcraft at TI – learning at reasonable cost – easy entry to TM clubs
What was your experience like? What did the participants gain from the experience?
Relate recent Speechcraft experiences for club in formation Indigo Valley Speakers
Call for contribution from the audience.
Focus on options for being flexible with learning opportunities:
Ask for any experience from members of audience.
Describe how Speechcraft workshop programs are usually scheduled in your area?
Describe my recent experience with promoting a four session model for newbies.
Explain what might be done using Model 4. More details later.
Let’s explore Models 1, 2 and 3 first.
Explain outcomes: 3 speeches prepared and delivered; evaluated and supported by advisors,
Recommended schedule: best done over 4 consecutive weeks for specific groups
Educationals: delivered by experienced TMs – shared teaching model
Assignments: some homework required between sessions
Guest Speakers, Evaluators and Presentations in final session.
Explain outcomes: 5 speeches prepared and delivered; evaluated and supported by advisors,
Recommended schedule: best done over 6 consecutive weeks for specific groups – may have gaps between levels
Educationals: delivered by experienced TMs – shared teaching model
Assignments: some homework required between sessions
Guest Speakers, Evaluators and Presentations in final session.
Explain outcomes: 6 speeches prepared and delivered; evaluated and supported by advisors,
Recommended schedule: best done over 4 months for specific groups – build breaks between levels
Educationals: delivered by experienced TMs – shared teaching model
Assignments: some homework required between sessions
Guest Speakers, Evaluators and Presentations in final session.
This model would fit with clubs that meet twice a month
Sessions would be abbreviated to fit time allowed.
Selected educationals to suit the group goals
Participants have chance to schedule their practice speeches in the third meetings scheduled in March and June.
Speech meetings devoted to the development of new members.
Discuss the current print based resources:
Coordinators’ Guide: useful as guides for workshops; provides outlines for 4, 6 an 8 week models; plus sample promotions
Not customisable
Workbook: useful guides for homework guidelines; speech outlines and evaluation pages
* Not customisable
Explain : - LMS, open courses, self-paced
Discuss use of videos in learning: the Netflix generation
Discuss the need for more online accessible and customisable content to suit individual learners.
Describe how the MOODLE LMS provides a customisable site for content, activities, guidelines and communication
Research has begun. Gathering of a team next on agenda. You could be part of that team.
Discuss the importance of forums for collaboration
The power of being connected in FB
Ask for comments in text chat.
Virtual Tour of each:
Toastmasters Channel – https://www.youtube.com/user/Toastmasters
TEDx Channel – https://www.youtube.com/user/TEDxTalks
Speechcraft Online - http://www.coachcarole.net/courses/course/view.php?id=89
Explain how these resources can be incorporated into Speechcraft Online.
Note: a simple way to incorporate TED talks for one off activities: use the TED Ed – create a lesson tool. Ed.ted.com
Speechcraft facilitators: wealth of experience; wider sharing proposed; collaboration/networking [ same time potential ]
Speechcraft participants: provide any time information; videos and online lessons; collaboration/networking [any time ]
Global Toastmasters: guidance and feedback; opportunities for TM projects: collaboration/networking [ webinars ]
Typical pathway for a new TM:
Joins in January – connects to an online discussion group – could be easy-Speak or FB;
Connects in February – adds to discussion forums – ask questions or contribute ideas
Accesses videos in March – learns what to look for in speeches
Reads and researches information in April – learns about the requirements of each speech
Practices at a club in May – requests speeches for a special meeting and delivers a speech
Practices at a club in June– requests roles for a special meeting and evaluates a speech
Proposal for my clubs – especially those struggling for membership
Now Your opportunity for collaborating on the design and development of an online course for Speechcraft Facilitators
This is my latest brainwave project for another HPL.
You can look over my shoulder as it develops at above address – guest password is speechcraft
A place to gather the wisdom of the crowd
I have made a start using my favourite MOODLE LMS – its what I do as an instructional designer
Basing it on a model I chose for easy-Speak Made Easy – an online course for easy-Speak facilitators
Use of ebooks – sequential steps with practical examples, promotional templates and videos
I have made a start with first set of helpful resources for Planning Speechcraft Workshops
Explain how I use Trello for my connected collaborative project teams.
Demonstrate: navigation and management
I am gathering a team who can help with the design and development using a collaborative tool called TRELLO.
This is open to the public, and you can also look over our shoulders or join the team on request.
The other piece of the collaboration is just beginning at Facebook. This new group will help others learn about Speechcraft online.
I used the same tactic for developing community discussions for the easy-Speak Made Easy course. This is now a thriving FB community where learners can ask questions and get immediate help.
