What is Public Speaking?
7. Do’s and Dont’s in Public Speaking
DONT’S
Read from notes or screen at all times
Apologize
Turn back on audience
Slouch, hands in pockets
Frequent using of “uhmms”, “ahhs”, “ok”, “you
know”, etc.
Talk too fast and too slow
8. DO’s
Observe eye-to-eye contact.
Apply appropriate gestures.
Glance at notes, once in a while.
Involve audience.
11. 1. Eye Contact Count
Goal:
Learn to hold eye contact
Help speaker be grounded & connected to audience
Instructions:
Divide the group into groups of 5.
Each person speaks in front of the group about anything.
They can literally ramble if they want to. Each of the
listeners in the group holds both hands up for the person.
The listeners will count silently in their head (1,2,3,4,5)
and take one hand down once the speaker holds eye
contact for five seconds.
12. Eye Contact Count
Instructions:
Each hand = 5 seconds of continuous eye contact (each person has
2 hands, so each person will eventually be talked to for 10 seconds,
either in 2 x 5 seconds or 10 seconds at once).
If the person breaks eye contact by looking away, the hand stays up.
Audience attention should stay on the person.
The speaker can rotate as they choose between listeners (and they
will do so naturally) but they must keep continuous eye contact with
each person before a hand comes down.
13. 2. Jigsaw Story
Instructions:
1. Divide the class into small groups of 10.
2. Player 1 will start making an opening line of
the story.
3. Players 2, 3, and others will continue to
imaginatively tell the story by adding a single
or more sentences that connects the
previous sentence/s.
4. The jigsaw story will after two rounds of
taking turns.
14. 3. Questions Only
Goal:
To engage workshop participants with a fast, fun improve
game and encourage creative thinking at the start of a
session.
Instructions:
The basic rules for the game are:
1. Every question needs to be answered with another question
2. f you answer a question with something other than a question,
you're out of the game!
3. You can't simply repeat the question that was asked to you. For
example, "How are you doing today?" shouldn't be answered with
"How are YOU doing today?"
15. 3. Questions Only
4. Ask pairs to converge into small groups. Next, play the
game again as a set of four, going clockwise around the
group.
5. For example, if I asked you, "What did you have for
dinner?" you would have to respond with a Why, How,
When, Where, or Who question. You couldn't respond
with a What question, or you'd be out!
Play for another few rounds so that each person in the
group gets a turn at starting the conversation.

17. Manuscript- a verbatim reading of a
written message.
Advantage

of original words.
Disadvantage
• It’s typically an
uninteresting
way to present.
19. Memorized- the rote recitation of a written
message that the speaker has committed
to memory.
Advantages
• It enables the speaker to
maintain eye contact with
the audience.
• The speaker can move
freely around the stage
and use hands to make
gestures.
Disadvantages
• Monotone or a sing-
song repetitive delivery
pattern
• Lack of naturalness
• May forget the lines
and fail to find your
place and keep going
21. Extemporaneous- the presentation of a
carefully planned and rehearsed speech,
spoken in a conversational manner using
brief notes.
Advantages
• The speaker will be
perceived as
knowledgeable and
credible.
• It elicits better attention of
the audience.
Disadvantage
• It requires a great deal
of preparation for both
the verbal and the
nonverbal components
of the speech.
24. Impromptu- the presentation of a short
message without advance preparation.
Advantage
• It’s spontaneous
and responsive in
an animated group
