Norma Rae Leadership
Abstract
Norma Rae is a true story set in a Southern mill town in the summer of 1978. Norma Rae and the
mill workers were victimized by the mill owners low, unfair wages, and poor health conditions
from the work in the textile mill. During this time Norma was fearful for her family s health and
becomes aware of a labor organizer trying to bring the union to the mill. Norma decides to join
forces with the union organizer, Reuben Warshosky. Management saw her as a threat and ordered
her out of the mill, but not before she inspired the mill workers. It is greatt leadership that finally
brings the mill workers together and they vote in and start a branch of the Textile Workers Union of
America. The film is a real testament to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Reuben is more sophisticated and not from the working class culture Norma is, he is
extremely sympathic to their plight. In some ways Reuben sees himself as one of them. Reuben
doesn t use his intellectual to hoard over the workers, and Norma isn t at all intimidated by Reuben.
At one point Norma tells Reuben about her sexual escapades. her first affair and the fact she lost
her virginity in the back of a Cadillac with her legs hanging out the window. Reuben in turns tells
Norma he lost his virginity by being seduced by his music teacher. Norma then says she sleeps
with traveling salesmen, gets married for the second time, and cavorts with her friends at local
bars. He then tells her he sleeps with a Harvard attorney and reads the Sunday New York Times
with her.
Back at the mill Norma sees a racist leaflet put on the bulletin board for management.
Management is trying to incite the white mill workers. Norma calls Reuben to ask what she
should do. He responds by correcting Norma s grammar. Reuben admires Norma s courage and
discipline. Reuben is at the entrance to the mill passing out flyers, Norma passes him and tells him
he is using too many big words. As their relationship grows you can see the gap bridged between
intellual Rueben and the working class Norma. Norma and Reuben form a friendship that moves
beyond a sexual relationship, they actually listen to each

Censorship Violates Our First Amendment Right
In the pursuit of education, students strive to learn and develop their understanding of the world
that surrounds them. Accordingly, it is the responsibility of the school administration to provide the
means to that end. Yet, there is a polarized divide among schools and their interpretation of
freedom of speech. This occurrence is experienced primarily at the university level but can be seen
at all levels of education. At the epicenter of this dispute is the notion of censorship, specifically
whether or not it is feasible to restrict what can and cannot be said by faculty and students alike.
Advocates of freedom of speechassert that censorship violates our First Amendment right, a liberty
that is inalienable. Proponents also argue that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In defense of Shurtz, the use of blackface falls within the realm of freedom of speech, as it does
not cause harm, but does create discomfort because if its historical significance. Garcia argues
that regardless of the intention of the user, the use of blackface is inherently racist because of its
historical context. The lack of knowledge as to why such actions are considered racist is more
detrimental than the action itself. However, the case of Nancy Shurtz is not a singular
occurrence, but a common American experience. Garcia describes Shurtz as a symptom, and we
make a grave, possibly fatal error when we treat only the symptom and leave untreated the
underlying malady (Garcia). Therefore, executing a quick suspension of Shurtz does not resolve
the large issue at hand, which must be dealt with in order to see significant progress within our
society. Allowing academic dialogues about controversial issues, such as racism and sexual
violence, within our education system is paramount because only through the understanding of
other perspectives will we begin to remedy the underlying disease that has plagued our nation
since its inception. An increasing trend among college campuses is the use of safe spaces and
trigger warnings. The term safe space refers to an area where discriminatory and offensive notions
are barred and a person can feel secure. A trigger warning is a forewarning of content that could

desktop fabricators have paved the way for engineers by making the impossible possible. They are
the new wave parts manufacturing because of their intelligent manufacturing process and part by
part building applications. desktop fabricating also known as 3D Printing or Additive

uploaded digitally into the computer. The thing we can build today with 3d printing were not even

With desktop fabricating, surgeons can produce mockups of parts of their patient s body which
needs to be operated upon. desktop fabricating makes it possible to make a part from scratch in
just hours. It allows designers and developers to go from flat screen to exact part. Nowadays
almost everything from aerospace components to toys are getting built with the help of desktop
fabricators. desktop fabricating is also used for jewelry and art, architecture, fashion design, art,
architecture and interior design. For more personal printing, recreational item for hobbyists are
made. Things like missing board game pieces, plastic cups, other home essentials, and cool
collectibles impossible to build conventionally like asymmetrical tops. Most domestic desktop
fabricators are priced from 250$ 2000$ and is definitely a worthy investment for hobbyists and
inventors. The best part is that any person can learn desktop fabricating and CAD (meaning
Computer Aided Design). It only takes weeks to get familiar with the processes involved using
tools like Sketchup and Blender. So 3D printing becomes a very viable option for manufacturers
everywhere, but is this not always good.
As with all technology 3D printers have risks associated with them. A big factor in these risk is
how it is digitally orienting allowing for downloads and digital transfers of blueprints. Thats all
well and good but what about illegal transfers and stealing designs? It has

Research Paper On Ankle Sprains
Bright lights shine down onto the gym floor and the crowd is on their feet. The ball is moved
down the court in the players right hand. Seconds are left on the shot clock. The player crosses
onto the other side of the court. His expression calm, like the pressure of 1000 tons that weighs on
his shoulders at this moment is nothing. He approaches the defender and crosses the ball to his left
hand staring down his opponent. At this moment it is him and the defender. Everything is quiet and
everyone s focus is on this match up that would decide the game. The players suddenly rushes
towards the basket. The defender stumbles backward off balance. The player stops on a dime. 3!
He takes his time 2! and shoots the ball towards the hoop. The ball 1! has perfect spin as it
approaches the hoop. Swish. 0! The buzzer goes off and pandemonium explodes into existence.

Ivan Pavlov Essay
During the 1890s Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov was looking at salivation in dogs in
response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he
entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food . At first this was something of a
nuisance In his experiment, Pavlov used a bell as his neutral stimulus. Whenever he gave food
to his dogs, he also rang a bell. After a number of repeats of this procedure, he tried the bell on its
own. As you might expect, the bell on its own now caused an increase in salivation. So the dog
had learned an association between the bell and the food and a new behavior had been learnt.
Because this response was learned (or conditioned), it is called a conditioned response.
(simplypsychology.org) The neutral stimulus has become a conditioned stimulus. Pavlov showed
the existence of the unconditioned response by presenting a dog with a bowl of food and the
measuring its salivary secretions. Pavlov knew that somehow, the dogs in... Show more content on

Questions On Initial Reactions And How It Can Your Views...
1.What were your initial reactions to how this group is set up? How have your views changed at
this point, if at all?
I believe for me my initial reactions to how this group was set up is that everyone is in the same
boat. By that I mean nobody (except for the professor) knew what to expect or what could
happen. As I recall one of the initial conversations started at the beginning of the first class was
about a complaint regarding smoking. This seemed to me a half hazard attempt at starting an
easy conversation, but gave little in the way of development of group interaction. This was more
of a vent and didn t strive to develop relationships within the group but rather express a baseline
opinion on what was annoying them that day. We saw that again in this last class when the first
initial conversation had to do with issues about parking. I have noticed a definite change as time
has progressed in how much information people appear to be giving out. My hopes for this
class is that we can avoid going turning this into a complaint forum and get into the grit of each
other s personal lives. Discussing things like deepest fears, or worse things that have happened to
individuals and how they coped with them would be more in line with what I would hope to
expect from this group. My views are that the group is slowly opening up, but in a class that only
meets once a week it is not moving fast enough.
2.What is one quality of communication in our group, if any, that you would like

What Is The Theme Of Father And Son By Bernard Maclaverty
Father and Son is a short story written by the Irish Bernard MacLaverty in 1978. The short story
takes place in Northern Ireland where we meet a father and his son and get a glimpse into their life.
The narrator alternates between father and son and is mostly conversations and thoughts.
The story is basically based on the relationship between the son and the father and you do not get
much told from the past. However there is told, that the son has been in London, which is clear
because the father says he has not heard from his son for two years, and talks about reading about
London in the papers and seeing scenes from London on the news. We are also told that the father
is a widow which is clear when the father asks the questions Is it my ... Show more content on

The atmosphere is always pressured between the father and son and none of them sleeps at
night. They used to be close to talk, laugh and do a lot of things together among them, go
fishing. Now the son is very stuffy and shares nothing with his father, he doesn t tell him where
he goes, not even when the father asks. The son s anger and bad relationship with the father is
obvious by his way of act, thinking and talking to his father. He shouts and calls him a nosey old
bastard and an old woman that cries (page 116, line 10) (page 115, line 3 4). The father is calmer
he loves his son very much but he is worried and frustrated about his son. He miss the time when
they could do anything together, he want his son to talk to him the way he hear him talk to the
people in the door, want to laugh with him and know what he is thinking. One day after an
ordinary quarrel the father would go up to apologize, when he opens the door he sees his son
pushing a gun under the pillow and when he asks what is his son shouts, It s non of your fucking

Elie Wiesel Holocaust Survivor Essay
Elie Wiesel Holocaust Survivor
As war broke out in Europe during 1939, no one could either imagine or believe the terror that
Adolf Hitler would soon bring to the lives of Jewish people. Drawing from his paranoia and a
drive for a world Nazi power, Hitler singled out the Jews as the cause for problems in Germany
and began to carry out his plan for the destruction of a part of humanity. Hitler not only persecuted
the Jews of Germany, but he also targeted the Jews in Poland and other parts of Europe, such as
Transylvania, which was the home of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.
Breaking his self imposed vow of silence in 1958, Elie Wiesel published Night which details his

Moesh solemnly told Elie of what really went on in Galicia; after exiting the trains, the Jews
were forced to dig massive graves and then wait in line to be murdered. Even children were tossed
into the air as prey for the guards machine guns. Moesh had escaped only because he was injured
and presumed dead.
During the following days and nights, Moesh spread his story throughout the community in an
effort to warn his people of the impending terror, but no one believed him. Some said, He s just
trying to make us pity him. What an imagination he has. 2 Many people thought Moesh had just
simply gone mad, and even Wiesel denied the stories of his friend.
The Jews not only denied the warnings of Moesh, but also disbelieved that Hitler planned to
exterminate them. Wiesel summarized the general feeling of the community by stating, Could he
exterminate a population scattered throughout so many countries? So many millions! What
methods could he use? And in the middle of the twentieth century! 3 Other reports indicate that the
Jews did not believe that Hitler s attempted genocide was occurring. Newspaper articles about the
murders were shrugged off as panic inducers because killing such large numbers was
incomprehensible; many believed that the deportees were sent away to do agricultural work, but
they would soon learn otherwise.4

Apple s Mission Statement For Apple
The successful company that I have chosen is apple. Apple was established in 1976 by Steve Jobs,
Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. Apple is one of the leading innovators in technology that
designs and markets electronics, computer software, and personal computers. Apple products are
one of the most dependable devices out there. Apple is an American company. The company s best
known hardware products include the Macintosh line of computers, the iPod, the iPhone and the

Apple is known for their strategic innovative management practices.
Steve Job s mission statement for Apple in 1980 was: To make a contribution to the world by
making tools for the mind that advance humankind. I don t think his mission statement is too far
from what it now. It lengthy but is give the same concept. I basically use most of Apples
products. From my Ipad to my Iphone and it does make life easier. Apple has more programs as
far as business purposes that make life a lot easier. Their products are compatible with each

I further explain all the required information, we have to understand that a club operates
differently as compared to a normal business/enterprise. The most imperative difference between a

which the owner is entitled to because the owner is the person who provides the start up capital.

specific corner where refreshments and snacks are sold for the convenience of its members.
This is not the main activity of the club, yet, is a small trading activity that generates funds for
the club. Western Cape Soccer Club prepares a Refreshment Trading Account to account for the
profit or loss arising from such an activity. The money that the club receives from this activity
will serve as a portion of the income. When the physical refreshments are bought, this is
recorded in the REFRESHMENTS ACCOUNT which is an asset account. If there are
refreshments left over at the end of the financial period, these have to be recorded in the account
called REFRESHMENTS ON HAND and these will be used in the next financial period.
Refreshments account will increase on the Debit side and if the refreshments are sold, the
account decreases on the Credit side (as it is an asset account). The profit made will be accounted
for with a contra account PROFIT ON SALE OF REFRESHMENTS. I have illustrated how

Analysis Of Livvie, And Girl By Eudora Welty
Separate spheres is an ideology that defines separate spheres for women and men. This ideology
surfaced during the Industrial Revolution, although the idea of gendered separation of spheres is
much older. The notion of separate spheres dictates that men, based primarily on their biological
makeup as well as the will of God, inhabit the public sphere the world of politics, economy,
commerce, and law. Women s proper sphere , according to the ideology, is the private realm of
domestic life, child rearing, housekeeping, and religious education (Kuersten, pp. 16 17). The
theme in Livvie by Eudora Weltyand in Girl by Jamaica Kincaiddepicts how women are instructed
to take care of the home through experience and submission which is defined by the sphere
ideology. EudoraWelty has made significant contributions to the cause of American literature
using themes that share the ideology of separate spheres. The story in question, Livvie , in
principal is the renewal of the main character s life, from the realm of death. The story revolves
around the life of Livvie, who is married to a much older man, Solomon. Although the married life
provides some personal security and regularity, it lacks in passion. This makes her feel that she is
entrapped in the relationship. While this sort of conflict had been explored and presented by many
female writers of the last century, Eudora Welty s offering is not so prominent by the narrative
method but by the story s thematic

Sammy Sosa was a baseball player for the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and the Chicago White

not win the bet, Sammy was not a sore loser. Sammy Sosawas the right fielder for the Chicago Cubs

mom, Mireya Sosa, was born in the Dominican Republic, and she couldn t work for herself, all
the money went to her family. She married at a young age, but it ended in a divorce. She took
her son Louis, and left to find a job. She later on took the job as a maid. Sammy was the fifth
child, and he got the nickname Mikey from his grandmother. Sammy s stepfather had died of
massive bleeding in the brain. He had worked for his family ever since then, and he never did
give up. Even though he did not have a mitt or ball, Sammy had used a milk carton as a mitt, and
rolled up socks as the ball. (Susan Korman 13 14)
Sammy had played with two American leagues, then a national league. He had first played with the

Turing, Searle, and Artificial Intelligence
The conditions of the present scenario are as follows: a machine, Siri*, capable of passing the
Turing test, is being insulted by a 10 year old boy, whose mother is questioning the appropriateness
of punishing him for his behavior. We cannot answer the mother s question without speculating as
to what A.M. Turing and John Searle, two 20th century philosophers whose views on artificial
intelligence are starkly contrasting, would say about this predicament. Furthermore, we must
provide fair and balanced consideration for both theorists viewpoints because, ultimately, neither
side can be correct in this scenario. But before we compare hypothetical opinions, we must

The answer is no because we cannot accurately determine, from the given information, whether
Siri* understands what she is saying on a deep, emotional level, one requirement for personhood
that both Turing and Searle deem necessary (Searle; Turing). We have no method of measuring
Siri* s level of understanding outside of the Turing test, which Searle rejects as an accurate
measurement of linguistic understanding. And again, he also rejects the idea that any electronic
machine can possess such understanding whatsoever, so Siri* s response is essentially
meaningless. Part D: Answering to Amy In response to Amy s initial question, it would be
unwise to immediately present either Turing s or Searle s answer as a correct response.
Similarly, it would be unwise to declare a winning philosophy in this scenario, as the correct
philosophy depends on the correct judging criteria, which we lack. Clearly, if Siri* is a person, or
judged to be a person based on certain criteria, then Turing is correct in his assessment; Amy
should punish her child. If Siri* is not a person, then Searle is correct, and Amy would not have
significant reason for punishment. But in this scenario, no judgment criteria are explicitly being
applied, nor is one school of thought clearly more appropriate than the other. Therefore, our only
hope of declaring which of the two theories is correct in this scenario, thereby correctly answering
Amy s initial question, is to hypothesize judging

Bullies In The Workplace
In schools, you will come across bullies in one form or another. In fact, bullies are commonplace
in American schools. The bullies will mock, look down, pressurize and ostracize you. They may
sometimes even cause physical harm to you. But is it possible that being bullied at school can
actually prepare you for the workplace? I believe so, as bullyingcan actually teach us to cope with
office politics and give us motivation to work harder and better in the workplace.
Firstly, being bullied in school can actually teach us how to cope with office politics in the
workplace. When students are being bullied, students are given immense stress, as they are
mentally tortured and feel depressed and stressed. You would have to learn how to cope with
bullying to survive. As in the workplace, there are office politics which you would have to cope
with, where people are constantly being stressed to outperform others to keep their job, and how to
cope with the tricks and manipulation techniques other people use to keep their job or climb the
ranks, things you have to constantly keep deal with. This coupled with the stress of working itself
gives the worker quite some stress. Being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cognitive Load Theory Intersects With Human Cognitive...
Cognitive load theory intersects with human cognitive architecture by addressing working memory
as limited to three to seven elements of information when the learning of new information is a
requirement (Blissett, Cavalcanti, Sibbald, 2012). Yet, where there is familiarity of information,
both capacity and duration limits of working memoryare eliminated (Paas Ayres, 2014). Cognitive
loadtheory introduces the prominence of cognitive schemas as a strategic approach toward the
organizing and storage of knowledge using the concept of chunking multiple elements of
information within a single element with a specific purpose (Paas Ayres, 2014). Cognitive schemas

Extraneous cognitive load occurs as a result of the inappropriate selection of instructional design
(Yuling et al., 2015; Leppink et al., 2013; Kalyuga, 2011, Sweller, 2015). Germane cognitive load
refers to the design of effective learning processes allowing individuals to use their cognitive
resources to cope with intrinsic cognitive load introduced by learning tasks (Yuling et al., 2015;
Leppink et al., 2013; Kalyuga, 2011, Sweller, 2015). When thinking about cognitive load, it may
be useful to think about the total amount of mental effort used in working memory. The
cognitive load placed on working memory is considered to be a critical factor in determining
learning and problem solving efficiency, and instructional design requires an alignment with the
individual learner s cognitive capacity and expertise (Sweller, 2012; Sweller, Ayres, Kalyuga,
2011). Working memory is generally considered to have limited capacity (Schmeck, Opfermann,
van Gog, Paas, Leutner, 2015; Sweller, van Merrienboer, Paas, 1998). Cognitive load theory
recommends instruction organized in such a way to ensure limited working memory resources
focus on intrinsic as opposed to extrinsic cognitive load (Choi et al., 2014). Cognitive load theory
(Sweller, van Merrienboer, Paas, 1998; 2011) incorporates a lens through which such an
investigation can occur. The theory argues that the cognitive load placed on working memory is a
critical factor in determining learning

Regardless of the era, people who belong to it will dance at least once in their lifetime. One can go

Gonna Make You Sweat, or also known as Everybody Dance Now, is a song by C+C Music

Tsa Should Use Full Body Scanners
After the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, TSA (Transportation
Security Administration) was created and have since then beefed up their security. Because of all
the new security devices and rules taking place now, the wait time at in the security line is longer,
but for a good reason. On an average day, TSA screens 1.1 million bags. Of those 1.1 million bags,
around 50,000 of them have to be checked thoroughly due to suspicious items inside the bags. The
wait time at airport securitylines has increased because of new threats. Because of an increase in the
wait time at the securityline, some people find it very frustrating and think that all the precautions
are unnecessary. Those people are wrong though. In the past years since TSA was created,
multiple bomber attacks have been attempted but have yet to succeed due to TSA keeping up
with its safety requirements. In 2010, TSA started to use full body scanners. Some people are
uncomfortable with the idea that when going through the body scanners, they are almost viewed
completely naked and worry that those photos will be leaked. In Emily Holbrook s article,
Airport Security: privacy vs. safety, she makes an interesting pint when it comes to body
scanners by quoting Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who said, you don t need to look at my wife and 8 year

Classism And Lack Of Personal Awareness
Classism and Lack of Personal Awareness Will Persist
Both Julian in Flannery O Connor s Everything That Rises Must Converge and Cassio in
Shakespeare s Othello have been raised to act and to believe that they are exceptional among their
peers. This ingrained belief that they are better than others presents itself in the way they think and
speak to those around them, who they choose to associate with, and how their lack of personal
awareness negates any good intentions they may have.
Both Cassio and Julian s breeding are the root causes of each man s unique brand of classism.
Cassio was born a Florentine and brought up to be a gentleman. In the days of Shakespeare it was
essential that a gentleman possess the skills of flirtation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are numerous areas in both literary works where Julian and Cassio display blatant classism
towards those around them. Cassio provides a fantastic example of classism when he says, The
Lieutenant is to be saved before the Ancient. This is because of the beliefthat your positions in life
were designated by God and therefore would be reflected in heaven as well. Cassio even
exhibits anger and a determination to defend his honor when Roderigo corrects his manners. A
knave teach me duty? I ll beat the knave into a twiggen bottle. Cassio considers it to be
ridiculous and insulting to be corrected by Roderigo, a lesser class of man. While Shakespeare s
Cassio displays unconcealed classism, Flannery O Connor s Julian is a more subdued example, as
the majority of his classism is relegated to the judgements of others within his internal monologue.
As his aggravation with his mother reaches its breaking point he verbalizes his classism by
saying, You haven t the foggiest idea where you stand now or who you are. Believing he is
superior to his mother, Julian feels entitled to speak condescendingly to her on more than one
occasion. He withdraws into his mind which is

social network sites experience in a web article titled The Impact of Facebook on Our Students that
they recently published for the National Association of Independent Schools. The web article
attempts to explain why many students post embarrassing, humiliating, threatening, and hurtful
content in text, blogs, photos, and videos. The fact that most users feel anonymous and secure in
their home, leads to a false sense of privacy. Various adults are looking at student profiles,

Summary Of Lev Vygotsky
Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky, dedicated his studies to cognitive development. His theory, the
Social Constructivist, or Social Development Theory, stresses the importance of social influences,
especially through instruction, on children s cognitive development. This theory suggests that
social interaction and community play a large role in making meaning. Vygotsky displays his
theory using his Zone of Proximal Development, or ZPD. The Zone Proximal Development is a
term used to describe the range of tasks that are too difficult for a child to master alone, but can
be learned with guidance or assistance from adults or more skilled children. The lower limit of
the Zone of Proximal Development is the level reached by children when working by
themselves, without assistance from others. Contrary, the upper limit is the level in which tasks
become too difficult for a child to work independently, and additional help from a more skillful
adult or peer is needed. The purpose of the ZPD is to recognize where students lie in terms of
ability of certain cognitive tasks and skills. It allows monitoring of student progress using
scaffolding. Scaffolding is a term that is used to describe the level of support or guidance that is
being offered to a student when learning a task. Scaffolding is a large factor of Vygotsky s theory;
when a child is learning a new task, the level of guidance from a more skilled person is high, often
through direct instruction. The child begins to

IT projects offshore outsourcing: an inevitable trend
Outsourcing, especially offshore outsourcing, is not a new topic, but a continuing controversial
global trends for the industry of manufacturing, and information technology. As Corbett said,
outsourcing is the practice of transferring non core competitiveness jobs to other suppliers rather
than doing it self. Many experts are arguing that offshore outsourcing will harm the U.S. economy
than it will benefit the American people in the long run, while advocates can also list a bunch of
benefits over adverse. However, the practice of offshore outsourcing has been going on for decades,
and it wasn t resulting as opponents claimed. Instead, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Corbett, trace back to the early 1990s, outsourcing came into practice for the first
time. It was a time when severe depression covered around the U.S. and even those most
competitive of its businesses suffered significantly. Companies used outsourcing then to help
streamline their operations and to regain their competitive strength. The result was an
unprecedented period of economic growth during the latter half of the 1990s. as we enter the mid
2000s, today s challenges may be even more pressing than those of a decade ago. (Corbett, 15) It is
the general result rather than a snapshot combined by a few specific evidences. This short revision
objectively indicates that offshore outsourcing is not that threatening as proponent claimed.
Organizations has benefited from this practice. And that is the reason offshore outsourcing
continued and developed. History is a giant that people can stand on its shoulder. In the background
of Globalization, information technology plays an important role. In the past, offshore outsourcing
has contributed to the growth and development in the manufacture industry, as a sub category of

Justice In Medieval Europe
All through history, many complex and non complex questions come about. Many of these
questions like, what is justice? These questions are very complex and are hard to answer. This
is because the answers change because of many factors like time, evidence, place and ideas. For
example, your idea of justice may be different then someone from a different culture or place as
you. Although, overall there is no definite answer to the questions. The answer may be generally
the same. For example, what is justice? Justice is the maintenance or administration of what is just
especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards
or punishments. This can differ from person to person based on their beliefs, but overall be
generally the same. Justice in Medieval Europe is primarily based on evidence left behind, such as

Justice in Medieval Europe started from the fall of the Western Modern Empire, it became very
difficult to manage law and order situations in the smaller kingdoms initiated by the Barbarians.
The spread of religious movements of Christianity and Islamism made it even more challenging.
To give protection of the kingdom, kings transferred power to knights and barons. The lower
class of ordinary people like peasants and serfs accepted their rule to attain protection against
invaders and rival kingdoms. This gave rise to feudalism and their overall justice system.

Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog...
Burrowing owls often live in occupied prairie dog colonies. Researchers have proposed several
theories regarding why this occurs. One reason may be that owls avoid predation because they
share many of the same predators with black tailed prairie dogs and the presence of the prairie
dogs helps to reduce predation. Another theory is that the burrowing owls live in active prairie dog
colonies in order to listen to the prairie dogs for cues on when a predator is near. This behavior has
been documented between other groups, usually mammals or reptiles responding to birdalarm calls.
This study aimed to show whether burrowing owls responded differently to prairie dog predator

The burrowing owls reactions were recorded on camera in order to analyze the number and rate
of responses to the different recordings. Only birds within 30 meters of the speakers were
included in the data. Alert responses were measured for the first 10 seconds of the stimulus
broadcast to verify that the bird continued to react beyond initial startling. Behaviors that were
considered to be alert behaviors included head turning, stretching to look up, vocalizing, and head
bobbing. Relaxed behaviors included sleeping, preening, yawning, and foraging. The behaviors
were all noted during the broadcast then categorized for data analysis. Statistical tests were
performed to ensure that the order of the sounds didn t affect results. The researchers also tested
connections between nest identity and observation location. Finally, they verified whether trials
could be looked at individually when the same nest was tested because the same individuals may
have been observed more than once. After all these statistical tests, the trials were adjusted to
include the best results that showed no confounding variables. The results showed that burrowing
owls did increase alert behaviors following a prairie dog alarm call. The alarm call produced a
faster reaction than the biological control sound of cows mooing and the reaction was sustained for
a longer time period.

8th Grade Singing
Hello,
There are quite a few pedagogical reasons why Rachel and I have decided to combine both
choirs. Below are just a few. My 8th grade boys were having a hard time singing do to voice
changes. I tried to keep the boys up in their falsetto and while this worked for a few boys the
others we not able to produce certain notes. When boys voices start to change it can result in them
only being able to sing a very limited amount of notes. We worked on high trills, sliding, humming,
yawning, held long tones, among many of other to help support their changing voices. After our
first concert I talked with my boys and they had mentioned that they felt very discouraged about
singing because some of them simply are not producing notes or can only sing in a low rumble.
Rachel mentioned to me that her boys were just starting to transition and she was noticing large
gaps in her group as well. Combining both groups would result in a higher confidence level, tone
production, and create a full choir sound. This is one of the reasons why we combined the groups. ...

A Brief Note On The Mother Of God Standing On A Hillside...
Connor Monahan Dr. Stringer Huma 201 J 17 October 2015 Medjugorje: A Mother s Call to Her
Children In June of 1981, six children clamed to see Mary the Mother of God standing on a
hillside of Medjugorje, a small town in south east Yugoslavia. These children, four girls and two
boys, claim to continue to have Marian apparitions every day, to this day. Thousands of pilgrims
each year travel to Medjugorje each year to witness the visionary s appropriations. These
apparitions are not approved by the Catholic Church yet. These apparitions are real and there is
Biblical and physical proof for it. Many come to Medjugorje and claim to witness miracles, such
as healings and other miraculous events. Some claim that these miracles are actually satanic
and led people father away from Jesus. These claims are absolutely false, and hundreds are

Freud s Theory Of Instincts And The Individual Psyche
In Sigmund Freud s Civilization and its Discontents , we are introduced to a new outlook in the
way we view our lives due to his analysis of civilization and how it has affected our happiness.
Freud uses his theory of instincts in order to explain what encourages us as well as how our
behavior is all linked together and is motivated by our instincts. He explains why humans seek
happiness and how it is one of the toughest things to achieve. Towards the end of his book he also
gives an insight on how the individual psyche which consist of the id, ego, and super egoleads us to

The pleasure principles goal is to avoid pain, which Freud later states it is not always a good thing
because the longer things follow the pleasure principle the happiness received begins to decrease
and no longer has the same affect. Overall, this makes it harder for individuals to stay happy. Along
with the pleasure principle, Freud states there are three main things that also make us unhappy
which are our body, the external world, and our relations with others. And out of all these three, the
worst comes from our relations with others, we hurt one another more than anything else on earth.
Freud states, happiness ... is a problem of the economics of the individual s libido libido meaning
sexual desires, he demonstrates how an individual s sexual desires and being able to fulfill them
leads them to their happiness. At the same time, Freud s use of libido can also represent a
person s desires and pleasures as a whole and not limiting itself to sexual pleasure. Libido
connects to Freud s theory of instincts. Freud believes that our instincts influence our behavior,
and our behavior is caused by our desires. Satisfaction of instinct spells happiness for us , this
implies that if our desires are satisfied, our behavior is better and we will be happy. However,
there seems to be a problem when it comes to Freud s theory of instincts and civilization. Freud
states that civilization

Criticism of Capitalism in The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald...
Criticism of Capitalism in The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald
In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates an artificial world where money is the object of
everyone s desire. The characters, the setting, and the plot are very deeply submerged in a
Capitalism that ends up destroying many of them. Fitzgerald s criticism of Capitalism can be
seen as a move to subtly promote Socialism, an ideology in which value is placed on the inherent
value of an object rather than its market value. In a late collection of notes, Fitzgerald himself
proclaims that he is essentially Marxist. [i] Marxism is a specific branch of Socialist theory.
Fitzgerald makes Gatsby a novel that is not inherently Marxist or even Socialist, but one that is ...

This is a Capitalist ideal; because the characters have this value and they are corrupt, Fitzgerald is
criticizing Capitalism as a system through its values.
This class division is painfully apparent throughout the novel. In chapter five, some of the people
at Gatsby s party are singing a popular tune of the 1920 s, which includes the lyrics: the rich are
getting richer/and the poor are getting children/ain t we got fun? (101). The flippancy of the
lyrics implies a general attitude of the upper classes toward the lower class. Later in the novel,
Gatsby describes a young Daisy, who appears gleaming like silver, safe and proud above the hot
struggles of the poor (157). This sentence captures the main argument of Marx s The Communist
Manifesto. In the Manifesto, he describes the constant conflict between classes, but says that the
real struggle is on the part of the lower class. In this book, the upper class is portrayed as being
extremely artificial and corrupt. The reason that Gatsby works so hard to become a member of
the upper class is to impress a girl who he places a market value on and he becomes a member of
that class through illegalities. When Gatsby buys his house to impress Daisy, he is not simply
purchasing property; he thinks he is buying a dream. [ii]
At one point in the novel, Nick says that human sympathy has its limits (143). Even the narrator of

Variations of the Game of Cricket
Trobriand cricket, engaged by Trobriand Islanders, has been referred to as a distinct variation of
standard cricket. Christian missionaries originally introduced cricket to the islands as a sport to
discourage war among the populace. The sport has been extensively modified by the Trobriand
society through increasing the amount of players, dancing, chanting, and adjusted bats and balls.
As the game of cricket substituted war among the people of the island when war was forbidden, it
has incorporated most of the older traditions linked with war for the Trobriand nation. The sport
also reflects the objective of pride instead of ceremonial tradition, which was introduced to islands
by their British conqueror and the American soldier during World War II.
The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea were usually horticulturists who demonstrated and achieved
prestige and manhood throughout contest. These rivalries included the ability to plant yams, the
skill of making good trades and acquiring valuables, and maintaining the strength of a fighter.
Conversely, when Europeans missionaries occupied the island, the Trobrianders were required to
give up their tradition of warfare. When this happened, they lost a cultural outlet necessary to

Should Foreign Language Be Taught In Schools
The United States is the only industrialized country that routinely graduates students from high
school who lack knowledge of a foreign language. Whereas 52.7% of Europeans are fluent...in at
least one other language, only 9.3% of Americans are fluent in...another language (Indian River
High School n.p.). In most schools in the US, knowing more than one languageis not required.
Currently, there is no law that clearly states that a foreign tongue must be taught, so it is up to each
county, state, and schoolwhether or not a foreign language should be taught. Although there are
many benefits of learning new languages, the government is doing nothing about this. Therefore,
there should be a law passed in the United States for all schools to... Show more content on

Research shows that foreign learners have better listening skills and sharper memories than their
monolingual peers (qtd. in NEA Research 3). As the students learn the new vocabulary and
grammar rules of a new language, they develop better memories and good skills that are very
useful in later life when they have more responsibilities in their lives. The monolingual people will
be at a disadvantage when it comes to succeeding in life. Being articulate in foreign tongues can
bridge the gap between cultures, contribute to international diplomacy [and] promote... world peace
(Indian River High School n.p.). When different cultures know the native tongues of other cultures,
it will help communication between them. The two cultures can then understand problems more
easily and resolve them quicker. Also, knowing another language can help countries speak out
their needs and other countries to be more aware of them and make them more able to help. All
people are aware that children are the future of the world, and in order to make good leaders out
of these children, we need to instill a sense of helping others. A way to do this is to give an
understanding of other cultures to students

Essay on Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United...
Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United States Abstract Over the past years, gasoline and
electricity have been the leading energy resources. The search for an alternative source of energy
has become a complicated problem for scientists and an economic dilemma for America s public.
Scientists have been trying to recognize geothermal energy as the next leading source of energy. In
this research paper, I account for the inexpensive costs and different methods of gathering the
geothermal energy of America. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy resource which can heat
and cool buildings. Although there are some by products, using a particular type of system can help
stop their emission. In conclusion, the use of geothermal energy... Show more content on

The pipes hold water, or glycol, transferring the heat inside buildings, which is known as heat
exchange (Solar4Scolars, para. 2 and 3). Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United States 3
Government funded research into obtaining geothermal energy was greatly dynamic in the 1970s
and early 1980s. However, as oil prices declined in the mid 1980s, alternative energy sources
declined, thus, funding for geothermal energy research greatly reduced. Consequently, this
monetary difficulty stifled any advancement on geothermal technology. Now that energy concerns
have resurfaced, an opportunity exists for the U.S. to pursue the EGS [Enhanced Geothermal
Systems] option aggressively to meet long term national needs, as observed by MIT Professor
Jefferson Tester (MIT, January 22, 2007, para. 19). Based on previous studies, there is evidence that
geothermal energy has a hopeful future in helping the United States. To study the potential use of
geothermal energy, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found from experimental
procedures that mining heat stored as thermal energy can supply electricity at competitive prices
and cause little detriment to the environment. The study showed that drilling wells that reached hot
rock and connecting them to regions of fractured rock stimulated water flow. Relating to geothermal
energy, this exchange of heat produced large amounts of steam and hot water to run

Alternative Dispute Resolution And The Different Types Of It
In this essay I will address what alternative dispute resolution is and the different types of it. ADR
stands for Alternative dispute resolution is something that provides an alternative way of settling
civil disputes than the traditional way using the courts. The main forms of Alternative dispute
resolution are being arbitration, adjudication mediationand conciliation, however in the United
Kingdom the most commonly used alternative dispute resolutions are arbitration and mediation but
adjudication is becoming rapidly more popular. Adjudication is another form of alternative dispute
resolutionthat stems from Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act (Construction Act).
This Act was introduced in 1996 in the United Kingdom. Even though the Act was created to ensure
that the process remains informal, this has recently changed where parties that are in dispute are
now serving official documents such as witness statements, expert reports etc. Though recently The
Alternative Dispute Resolutionfor Consumer Disputes (Competent Authorities and Information)
Regulations 2015 was passed and deals with how consumer disputes are handled.
Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution that aims to solve disputes outside the courts
by a third party called arbitrators. The arbitrators review the case facts and evidence and gives out
a verdict that is legally binding and therefore enforceable. Both parties agree beforehand to abide by
the decision that the arbitrators

Summary Of The Sandwich Generation

Sandwich Generation, G.

The Sandwich Generation
After reading the article The Sandwich Generation: Who is Caring for you? by Ruth Tarantine I
have learned what the Sandwich Generation is and how to assist individuals in this generation. The
Sandwich Generation was originally used to describe baby boomers that were women in their
30s and 40s who cared for their parents and their own children. This term was coined by Dorothy
Miller. As time passed, the term changed to include both male and females and the age range is
now 40 to 65 years old. Almost 50% of adults 40 50 years old care for a parent and child. Caring
for a parent and child can stress a caregiver. Adding a chronic disease to either parent or child can
put additional stress on the caregiver. To help relieve some of this stress a caregiver will seek
outside help, such as hospitalization, which in reality can do more harm than good for the
caregiver. The caregiver will think that having their parent hospitalized will relieve this stress, but
instead this will cause them to feel guilty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were plenty of options provided in the article but I decided to cover the ones I believed
would be most helpful to anyone. The first step you can take is to take care of yourself. Many
times when helping others we forget about ourselves. We put things off to the side or don t pay
attention to our own needs. We can forget to eat right, sleep, get regular checkups, or even take a
break. When you are constantly taking care of someone you may go to a local fast food place
because you don t have time to cook a healthy meal. Some caregivers will turn to drugs or alcohol
to relieve stress. This can complicate their lives even more and make them more irritable. All of
these factors can add up and decrease your quality of

  • 3. Censorship Violates Our First Amendment Right In the pursuit of education, students strive to learn and develop their understanding of the world that surrounds them. Accordingly, it is the responsibility of the school administration to provide the means to that end. Yet, there is a polarized divide among schools and their interpretation of freedom of speech. This occurrence is experienced primarily at the university level but can be seen at all levels of education. At the epicenter of this dispute is the notion of censorship, specifically whether or not it is feasible to restrict what can and cannot be said by faculty and students alike. Advocates of freedom of speechassert that censorship violates our First Amendment right, a liberty that is inalienable. Proponents also argue that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In defense of Shurtz, the use of blackface falls within the realm of freedom of speech, as it does not cause harm, but does create discomfort because if its historical significance. Garcia argues that regardless of the intention of the user, the use of blackface is inherently racist because of its historical context. The lack of knowledge as to why such actions are considered racist is more detrimental than the action itself. However, the case of Nancy Shurtz is not a singular occurrence, but a common American experience. Garcia describes Shurtz as a symptom, and we make a grave, possibly fatal error when we treat only the symptom and leave untreated the underlying malady (Garcia). Therefore, executing a quick suspension of Shurtz does not resolve the large issue at hand, which must be dealt with in order to see significant progress within our society. Allowing academic dialogues about controversial issues, such as racism and sexual violence, within our education system is paramount because only through the understanding of other perspectives will we begin to remedy the underlying disease that has plagued our nation since its inception. An increasing trend among college campuses is the use of safe spaces and trigger warnings. The term safe space refers to an area where discriminatory and offensive notions are barred and a person can feel secure. A trigger warning is a forewarning of content that could ... • 6. Ivan Pavlov Essay During the 1890s Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov was looking at salivation in dogs in response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food . At first this was something of a nuisance In his experiment, Pavlov used a bell as his neutral stimulus. Whenever he gave food to his dogs, he also rang a bell. After a number of repeats of this procedure, he tried the bell on its own. As you might expect, the bell on its own now caused an increase in salivation. So the dog had learned an association between the bell and the food and a new behavior had been learnt. Because this response was learned (or conditioned), it is called a conditioned response. I believe for me my initial reactions to how this group was set up is that everyone is in the same boat. By that I mean nobody (except for the professor) knew what to expect or what could happen. As I recall one of the initial conversations started at the beginning of the first class was about a complaint regarding smoking. This seemed to me a half hazard attempt at starting an easy conversation, but gave little in the way of development of group interaction. This was more of a vent and didn t strive to develop relationships within the group but rather express a baseline opinion on what was annoying them that day. We saw that again in this last class when the first initial conversation had to do with issues about parking. I have noticed a definite change as time has progressed in how much information people appear to be giving out. My hopes for this class is that we can avoid going turning this into a complaint forum and get into the grit of each other s personal lives. Discussing things like deepest fears, or worse things that have happened to individuals and how they coped with them would be more in line with what I would hope to expect from this group. My views are that the group is slowly opening up, but in a class that only meets once a week it is not moving fast enough. 2.What is one quality of communication in our group, if any, that you would like ... During the following days and nights, Moesh spread his story throughout the community in an effort to warn his people of the impending terror, but no one believed him. The Jews not only denied the warnings of Moesh, but also disbelieved that Hitler planned to exterminate them. Wiesel summarized the general feeling of the community by stating, Could he exterminate a population scattered throughout so many countries? So many millions! What methods could he use? And in the middle of the twentieth century! 3 Other reports indicate that the Jews did not believe that Hitler s attempted genocide was occurring. • 13. Analysis Of Livvie, And Girl By Eudora Welty Separate spheres is an ideology that defines separate spheres for women and men. This ideology surfaced during the Industrial Revolution, although the idea of gendered separation of spheres is much older. The notion of separate spheres dictates that men, based primarily on their biological makeup as well as the will of God, inhabit the public sphere the world of politics, economy, commerce, and law. Women s proper sphere , according to the ideology, is the private realm of domestic life, child rearing, housekeeping, and religious education (Kuersten, pp. 16 17). The theme in Livvie by Eudora Weltyand in Girl by Jamaica Kincaiddepicts how women are instructed to take care of the home through experience and submission which is defined by the sphere ideology. EudoraWelty has made significant contributions to the cause of American literature using themes that share the ideology of separate spheres. The story in question, Livvie , in principal is the renewal of the main character s life, from the realm of death. The story revolves around the life of Livvie, who is married to a much older man, Solomon. Although the married life provides some personal security and regularity, it lacks in passion. This makes her feel that she is entrapped in the relationship. While this sort of conflict had been explored and presented by many female writers of the last century, Eudora Welty s offering is not so prominent by the narrative method but by the story s thematic ... Turing and John Searle, two 20th century philosophers whose views on artificial intelligence are starkly contrasting, would say about this predicament. The answer is no because we cannot accurately determine, from the given information, whether Siri* understands what she is saying on a deep, emotional level, one requirement for personhood that both Turing and Searle deem necessary (Searle; Turing). We have no method of measuring Siri* s level of understanding outside of the Turing test, which Searle rejects as an accurate measurement of linguistic understanding. And again, he also rejects the idea that any electronic machine can possess such understanding whatsoever, so Siri* s response is essentially meaningless. Part D: Answering to Amy In response to Amy s initial question, it would be unwise to immediately present either Turing s or Searle s answer as a correct response. Similarly, it would be unwise to declare a winning philosophy in this scenario, as the correct philosophy depends on the correct judging criteria, which we lack. Clearly, if Siri* is a person, or judged to be a person based on certain criteria, then Turing is correct in his assessment; Amy should punish her child. If Siri* is not a person, then Searle is correct, and Amy would not have significant reason for punishment. But in this scenario, no judgment criteria are explicitly being applied, nor is one school of thought clearly more appropriate than the other. Cognitive load theory intersects with human cognitive architecture by addressing working memory as limited to three to seven elements of information when the learning of new information is a requirement (Blissett, Cavalcanti, Sibbald, 2012). Yet, where there is familiarity of information, both capacity and duration limits of working memoryare eliminated (Paas Ayres, 2014). Cognitive loadtheory introduces the prominence of cognitive schemas as a strategic approach toward the organizing and storage of knowledge using the concept of chunking multiple elements of information within a single element with a specific purpose (Paas Ayres, 2014). Extraneous cognitive load occurs as a result of the inappropriate selection of instructional design (Yuling et al., 2015; Leppink et al., 2013; Kalyuga, 2011, Sweller, 2015). Germane cognitive load refers to the design of effective learning processes allowing individuals to use their cognitive resources to cope with intrinsic cognitive load introduced by learning tasks (Yuling et al., 2015; Leppink et al., 2013; Kalyuga, 2011, Sweller, 2015). When thinking about cognitive load, it may be useful to think about the total amount of mental effort used in working memory. The cognitive load placed on working memory is considered to be a critical factor in determining learning and problem solving efficiency, and instructional design requires an alignment with the individual learner s cognitive capacity and expertise (Sweller, 2012; Sweller, Ayres, Kalyuga, 2011). Working memory is generally considered to have limited capacity (Schmeck, Opfermann, van Gog, Paas, Leutner, 2015; Sweller, van Merrienboer, Paas, 1998). Cognitive load theory recommends instruction organized in such a way to ensure limited working memory resources focus on intrinsic as opposed to extrinsic cognitive load (Choi et al., 2014). Tsa Should Use Full Body Scanners After the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, TSA (Transportation Security Administration) was created and have since then beefed up their security. Because of all the new security devices and rules taking place now, the wait time at in the security line is longer, but for a good reason. On an average day, TSA screens 1.1 million bags. Of those 1.1 million bags, around 50,000 of them have to be checked thoroughly due to suspicious items inside the bags. The wait time at airport securitylines has increased because of new threats. Because of an increase in the wait time at the securityline, some people find it very frustrating and think that all the precautions are unnecessary. Those people are wrong though. In the past years since TSA was created, multiple bomber attacks have been attempted but have yet to succeed due to TSA keeping up with its safety requirements. In 2010, TSA started to use full body scanners. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea that when going through the body scanners, they are almost viewed completely naked and worry that those photos will be leaked. In Emily Holbrook s article, Airport Security: privacy vs. safety, she makes an interesting pint when it comes to body scanners by quoting Rep. Cassio even exhibits anger and a determination to defend his honor when Roderigo corrects his manners. A knave teach me duty? I ll beat the knave into a twiggen bottle. Cassio considers it to be ridiculous and insulting to be corrected by Roderigo, a lesser class of man. While Shakespeare s Cassio displays unconcealed classism, Flannery O Connor s Julian is a more subdued example, as the majority of his classism is relegated to the judgements of others within his internal monologue. As his aggravation with his mother reaches its breaking point he verbalizes his classism by saying, You haven t the foggiest idea where you stand now or who you are. His theory, the Social Constructivist, or Social Development Theory, stresses the importance of social influences, especially through instruction, on children s cognitive development. This theory suggests that social interaction and community play a large role in making meaning. Vygotsky displays his theory using his Zone of Proximal Development, or ZPD. The Zone Proximal Development is a term used to describe the range of tasks that are too difficult for a child to master alone, but can be learned with guidance or assistance from adults or more skilled children. The lower limit of the Zone of Proximal Development is the level reached by children when working by themselves, without assistance from others. Contrary, the upper limit is the level in which tasks become too difficult for a child to work independently, and additional help from a more skillful adult or peer is needed. The purpose of the ZPD is to recognize where students lie in terms of ability of certain cognitive tasks and skills. It allows monitoring of student progress using scaffolding. Scaffolding is a term that is used to describe the level of support or guidance that is being offered to a student when learning a task. Scaffolding is a large factor of Vygotsky s theory; when a child is learning a new task, the level of guidance from a more skilled person is high, often through direct instruction. One reason may be that owls avoid predation because they share many of the same predators with black tailed prairie dogs and the presence of the prairie dogs helps to reduce predation. Another theory is that the burrowing owls live in active prairie dog colonies in order to listen to the prairie dogs for cues on when a predator is near. This behavior has been documented between other groups, usually mammals or reptiles responding to birdalarm calls. Behaviors that were considered to be alert behaviors included head turning, stretching to look up, vocalizing, and head bobbing. Relaxed behaviors included sleeping, preening, yawning, and foraging. The behaviors were all noted during the broadcast then categorized for data analysis. Statistical tests were performed to ensure that the order of the sounds didn t affect results. Finally, they verified whether trials could be looked at individually when the same nest was tested because the same individuals may have been observed more than once. After all these statistical tests, the trials were adjusted to include the best results that showed no confounding variables. The characters, the setting, and the plot are very deeply submerged in a Capitalism that ends up destroying many of them. Fitzgerald s criticism of Capitalism can be seen as a move to subtly promote Socialism, an ideology in which value is placed on the inherent value of an object rather than its market value. This is a Capitalist ideal; because the characters have this value and they are corrupt, Fitzgerald is criticizing Capitalism as a system through its values. This class division is painfully apparent throughout the novel. In chapter five, some of the people at Gatsby s party are singing a popular tune of the 1920 s, which includes the lyrics: the rich are getting richer/and the poor are getting children/ain t we got fun? (101). The flippancy of the lyrics implies a general attitude of the upper classes toward the lower class. Later in the novel, Gatsby describes a young Daisy, who appears gleaming like silver, safe and proud above the hot struggles of the poor (157). This sentence captures the main argument of Marx s The Communist Manifesto. In the Manifesto, he describes the constant conflict between classes, but says that the real struggle is on the part of the lower class. In this book, the upper class is portrayed as being extremely artificial and corrupt. The reason that Gatsby works so hard to become a member of the upper class is to impress a girl who he places a market value on and he becomes a member of that class through illegalities. As the game of cricket substituted war among the people of the island when war was forbidden, it has incorporated most of the older traditions linked with war for the Trobriand nation. The sport also reflects the objective of pride instead of ceremonial tradition, which was introduced to islands by their British conqueror and the American soldier during World War II. The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea were usually horticulturists who demonstrated and achieved prestige and manhood throughout contest. These rivalries included the ability to plant yams, the skill of making good trades and acquiring valuables, and maintaining the strength of a fighter. Conversely, when Europeans missionaries occupied the island, the Trobrianders were required to give up their tradition of warfare. In most schools in the US, knowing more than one languageis not required. Currently, there is no law that clearly states that a foreign tongue must be taught, so it is up to each county, state, and schoolwhether or not a foreign language should be taught. Although there are many benefits of learning new languages, the government is doing nothing about this. Therefore, there should be a law passed in the United States for all schools to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research shows that foreign learners have better listening skills and sharper memories than their monolingual peers (qtd. in NEA Research 3). As the students learn the new vocabulary and grammar rules of a new language, they develop better memories and good skills that are very useful in later life when they have more responsibilities in their lives. The monolingual people will be at a disadvantage when it comes to succeeding in life. Being articulate in foreign tongues can bridge the gap between cultures, contribute to international diplomacy [and] promote... world peace (Indian River High School n.p.). When different cultures know the native tongues of other cultures, it will help communication between them. The two cultures can then understand problems more easily and resolve them quicker. Also, knowing another language can help countries speak out their needs and other countries to be more aware of them and make them more able to help. All people are aware that children are the future of the world, and in order to make good leaders out of these children, we need to instill a sense of helping others. A way to do this is to give an understanding of other cultures to students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Essay on Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United... Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United States Abstract Over the past years, gasoline and electricity have been the leading energy resources. The search for an alternative source of energy has become a complicated problem for scientists and an economic dilemma for America s public. Scientists have been trying to recognize geothermal energy as the next leading source of energy. In this research paper, I account for the inexpensive costs and different methods of gathering the geothermal energy of America. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy resource which can heat and cool buildings. Although there are some by products, using a particular type of system can help stop their emission. In conclusion, the use of geothermal energy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pipes hold water, or glycol, transferring the heat inside buildings, which is known as heat exchange (Solar4Scolars, para. 2 and 3). Feasibility of Geothermal Energy in the United States 3 Government funded research into obtaining geothermal energy was greatly dynamic in the 1970s and early 1980s. However, as oil prices declined in the mid 1980s, alternative energy sources declined, thus, funding for geothermal energy research greatly reduced. Consequently, this monetary difficulty stifled any advancement on geothermal technology. Now that energy concerns have resurfaced, an opportunity exists for the U.S. to pursue the EGS [Enhanced Geothermal Systems] option aggressively to meet long term national needs, as observed by MIT Professor Jefferson Tester (MIT, January 22, 2007, para. 19). Based on previous studies, there is evidence that geothermal energy has a hopeful future in helping the United States. To study the potential use of geothermal energy, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found from experimental procedures that mining heat stored as thermal energy can supply electricity at competitive prices and cause little detriment to the environment. The study showed that drilling wells that reached hot rock and connecting them to regions of fractured rock stimulated water flow. Relating to geothermal energy, this exchange of heat produced large amounts of steam and hot water to run ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Alternative Dispute Resolution And The Different Types Of It In this essay I will address what alternative dispute resolution is and the different types of it. ADR stands for Alternative dispute resolution is something that provides an alternative way of settling civil disputes than the traditional way using the courts. The main forms of Alternative dispute resolution are being arbitration, adjudication mediationand conciliation, however in the United Kingdom the most commonly used alternative dispute resolutions are arbitration and mediation but adjudication is becoming rapidly more popular. Adjudication is another form of alternative dispute resolutionthat stems from Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act (Construction Act). This Act was introduced in 1996 in the United Kingdom. Even though the Act was created to ensure that the process remains informal, this has recently changed where parties that are in dispute are now serving official documents such as witness statements, expert reports etc. Though recently The Alternative Dispute Resolutionfor Consumer Disputes (Competent Authorities and Information) Regulations 2015 was passed and deals with how consumer disputes are handled. Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution that aims to solve disputes outside the courts by a third party called arbitrators. The arbitrators review the case facts and evidence and gives out a verdict that is legally binding and therefore enforceable. Both parties agree beforehand to abide by the decision that the arbitrators ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Summary Of The Sandwich Generation David Kopec Application Activities #1, Sandwich Generation, G. 9/22/17 The Sandwich Generation After reading the article The Sandwich Generation: Who is Caring for you? by Ruth Tarantine I have learned what the Sandwich Generation is and how to assist individuals in this generation. The Sandwich Generation was originally used to describe baby boomers that were women in their 30s and 40s who cared for their parents and their own children. This term was coined by Dorothy Miller. As time passed, the term changed to include both male and females and the age range is now 40 to 65 years old. Almost 50% of adults 40 50 years old care for a parent and child. Caring for a parent and child can stress a caregiver. Adding a chronic disease to either parent or child can put additional stress on the caregiver. To help relieve some of this stress a caregiver will seek outside help, such as hospitalization, which in reality can do more harm than good for the caregiver. The caregiver will think that having their parent hospitalized will relieve this stress, but instead this will cause them to feel guilty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were plenty of options provided in the article but I decided to cover the ones I believed would be most helpful to anyone. The first step you can take is to take care of yourself. Many times when helping others we forget about ourselves. We put things off to the side or don t pay attention to our own needs. We can forget to eat right, sleep, get regular checkups, or even take a break. When you are constantly taking care of someone you may go to a local fast food place because you don t have time to cook a healthy meal. Some caregivers will turn to drugs or alcohol to relieve stress. This can complicate their lives even more and make them more irritable. All of these factors can add up and decrease your quality of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
