The Songhay Empire rose in the 15th century in West Africa and controlled trade in the western Sahara desert. While many urban elites converted to Islam, most people maintained traditional African beliefs. The Songhay Empire established control under leaders called "Caliphs of the land of the Blacks" and created a large administration dominated by Arab bureaucrats. However, the empire eventually declined as a result of the growing transatlantic slave trade.
