1) Medieval Ghana, also known as the Ghana Empire, existed from the 8th to 13th centuries in West Africa and was located approximately 500 miles north of present-day Ghana.
2) The empire began in the 8th century under the leadership of Dinga Cisse and lasted until about 1076 AD.
3) The rulers of the empire were called "Ghanas" and the empire was known for its gold trade, though it eventually declined as traders moved to other kingdoms, weakening Ghana.
