There is growing interest in alternative energy sources due to limited fossil fuel reserves. Research estimates that at 2009 consumption rates, proven oil reserves would be depleted in 55 years, natural gas in 63 years, and coal in 119 years. While probable and undiscovered reserves may extend these timelines, renewable energy is seen as the long-term solution. Solar energy in particular holds promise as the sun is the most abundant energy source. Photovoltaic solar systems convert sunlight directly into electricity, with global PV capacity increasing from 40 GW in 2010 to 139 GW in 2013. New systems aim to improve solar energy efficiency through the use of sensors, motors and mirrors to optimally position and focus sunlight on solar panels.
