The renewable energy industry is one of the fastest
growing industries today worldwide. According to
the 2010 Global Status Report, global sales were
estimated at $150-$200 billion dollars. The industry
on a global scale is growing at such a rapid pace that
industry experts forecast global sales of $615 billion
dollars by 2015. Advancements in old technology
have helped to facilitate in the increased growth of
the industry. Examples of this can be seen with solar
photovoltaic (PV) panels and wind turbines. 45-years
ago solar PV technology was barely available, the
panels were big, bulky and very expensive. Today,
you can buy the same size panel at double the watts
and at less than half the price.

This is due to the increase in
market demand, and the
advancements made in
manufacturing to increase
quality, efficiency and reduce
costs. The wind turbine is
another technology that has
made remarkable advancements.
The concept of the wind turbine
dates back to biblical times when
wind wheels were used for
milling grain and to draw water.
Today, solar and wind
technology are considered to be
the most efficient at producing
clean and abundantenergy out
of all the renewable energy
technologies. The future of
renewable energy technology is
changing and scientists,
engineers and everyday ordinary
people are finding unique and
creative ways to produce energy.
In the future, we believe we will
see the description of renewable
energy technology expand to
include biomass, waste and other
earth-based elements as forms of
renewable energy. We have seen
amazing developments in the
areas of waste to energy
production. To simplify the
technology, waste products are
gathered, which include human,
animal waste and garbage and
are processed into three
categories, a gas, a liquid fuel,
and a solid, and all three states
can be used as a fuel to provide
energy. Although, this technology
releases small amounts of carbon
into the environment, it does
provide energy in the finished

Fire is an interesting element as it is nature’s
element that can create anddestroy all things in our
natural environment. Fire in the form of the Sun is
so powerful, that it only takes eight minutes for the
heat and light energy to reach earth. This abundant
energy is responsible for everything that we depend
on to survive. This element provides us with heat to
stay warm, light so we can see the world, and food
for our plants that feed wildlife and all of human
kind.
In this natural process, we also get wind and rain
because of the heat from the sun, which causes air to
rise and move about and rivers, lakes and oceans to

We are going to explain to you how a basic solar PV
system works in a residential grid tie set up. The
above graphics depicts a simplified system without
all the racking, mounts, wires, over current
protection and loads that you would see in an actual
in home system installation. Additionally, the
system does not reflect an accurate scale of the size
of each component. The system components
consists of the following equipment:
(0) Solar PV Panels (1) AC/DC Inverter
(2) Electrical Panel (3) Digital Meter
(4) Utility Power (5) Typical Household Load
(0) The Solar PV Module converts the Sun’s energy
into electrical energy. The Solar Module converts
this energy into DC (direct current) electricity,
sending it to the inverter. (1) The inverter
transforms the electricity into AC (alternating
current) which is the type of current that most of
your household needs. Your existing electrical panel
then distributes the solar electricity and the (4)
utility power to all your (5) loads such as your

washer and dryer, television, computer and lights.
The (3) digital meter records the electricity
production and consumption from both the solar
PV and the (4) utility power for billing purposes for
the utility company. Some individuals might prefer
to have additional back up power and add a (6)
battery bank into the system, which is an option.
With this option, the (1) inverter will regulate the
charge of the battery to prevent over charging and
to ensure you have a fully charged (6) battery bank.
The electricity that is stored in the (6) battery bank
can be used at night or during blackout periods. The
valuable feature with this Solar PV system set up is
the ability to connect with the existing power grid.
Furthermore, as an owner of this type of system,
you can sell your excessive electricity back to the
utility with a plan known as net metering. At times
when you are not using all the electricity that you
are generating from your system, your meter will
spin backwards selling the electricity back to the (4)

product, and removes from the
waste stream and eliminates
contaminates from entering
our landfills and waterways.
Water as a fuel, in our opinion
is an area that requires further
investments. We know the
technology works and when
hydrogen is separated from
water a powerful gas is
produced. If we can find a safe
way to store the gas or make it
and use it only when needed,
we could eliminate the fears
around the safety aspect of
hydrogen. We already have the
technology in place to use this
fuel in the combustion engine
and gas stations can easily be
retrofitted if need be.
(Continued on page 6)
Furthermore, hydrogen emission
would only produce water vapor,
which is not toxic to the
environment. We believe that all
renewable energy technologies are
good, and everyone should try to use
them in one form or another and
adopt the technology into their
lifestyle. In our opinion, there is no
such thing as bad renewable energy
technology, as the technology only
promotes a healthier planet, and a
healthy planet means a healthy life
for you and I. If you are considering
buying a renewable energy product,
I would suggest that you research
how that specific technology suits
you best with your current situation.
For example, if you are considering
between a solar system and a wind
turbine to provide power for your
home. You will need to research or at
least ask the questions, do I get
adequate sunlight throughout the
year at my current location, are there
buildings, trees, or any other
obstructions that will prevent me
from receiving the most amount of
sunlight per year? Do I get enough
wind at my location? Does my
municipality allow me to have a
wind turbine? Researching these
types of question will allow you to
determine the best renewable energy
system for your particular
application. The right system for the
right application will provide you
with the best results. Other things to
consider when shopping for the right
renewable energy technologies, the
quality of system, the quality of the
renewable energy provider, and
manufacturing quality of the
products that will make up the
system are what will determine the
quality of the entire system that you
receive.

evaporate and condense. In the centre of our planet
also lies earth’s core, which is extremely hot and
causes earth’s many layers to move, contract and
expand. Earth’s core is also the reason behind the
shifting of our landscape and is what makes our
mountains and valleys. So you see, the element of
Fire is significant to our survival and to our way of
life as we know it.
You may be asking yourself, what does Fire have to
do with renewable energy and why are we telling
you about it? That is a valid question, and the
reason why we tell you about it, is to keep you
informed and educated on its importance in today’s
world.
Many people do not know or care about their daily
consumption of electricity. Most of us just use
electricity without even thinking of where it comes
from, what it is made of, or even know that there is
a shortage of it in the world today.
Many of you may not realize that the fuel that we
use in our vehicles and the fuel that we use to warm
our homes in the form of oil, gas and coal, come
from fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels come from the remains of prehistoric
plants and animals that originally gained that
energy from the Sun. This formation process takes
millions of years to form and that is why it is non-
renewable.
The extraction of these fuels and the burning of it, in
the scale that we are burning them are
unsustainable. While we deplete these resources, we
also contribute in the destruction of the
environment. The harmful effects of the extraction
process, refining, mining, distribution and
consumption are too much on our planet and will
eventually destroy our precious ecosystem.
Currently, countries around the world fight and
often go to war over this energy. Governments
make up rules and policies that affect others all in
the name of energy security and independence.
Many private businesses profit from this energy
resource and in the process destroy the surrounding
environment and local communities. As Canadians,
we participate in this too. Only through awareness,
education, participation and technology
advancements can we help ourselves and solve this
global epidemic.
This is a problem that exists today all around the
world, including here in Canada. This may not
personally effect you now, but it in due time, this
will effect you too.
So now that you have a good understanding of why
we write this article, perhaps you can help by
participating. All we ask of you is to be more aware
of the issues, learn all that you can about the
environment and participate in a cleaner, healthier
and responsible lifestyle. If you can afford it, source
out and utilize the available alternative power
technologies that are available today, that will
definitely cut down on your carbon footprint and
save you money in the long run. Be part of the
growing number of Canadians thatare helping to
do their part for our planet. Please don’t forget to do
the three R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Here at APEC, we will be doing our part by
