Socialization is the lifelong process by which individuals learn the values, beliefs, and norms of their society and take on roles to become functioning members. It begins in infancy through various socializing agents like family, school, peers and continues throughout life. The main goals of socialization are to help individuals adjust to social transitions, function in society, understand norms on a personal level, and facilitate cultural change from one generation to the next. Socialization can occur naturally, through planned teaching, and in positive or negative ways that influence a person's development and behavior.
