Almost all the knowledge is already available on the web.
All you need is someone to guide you to it.

What is the impact of the social web on how we learn?
Different social networks have created a bubble of knowledge around everybody. This bubble feeds you
daily chunks for knowledge to learning from. This means articles, videos, idea’s and opinions etc.
Social Learning = Receiving & sharing knowledge
Social Media:
- Twitter
- LinkedIn
- Facebook
- Quora
- etc.
These networks and how you use them can be different for everybody.
But what do we do with this information?
Social Networks:
- Twitter
- LinkedIn
- Facebook
- Quora
- etc.
Productivity Tools:
- Evernote
- Pocket
- Dropbox
- Google Drive
- etc.
The power of learning from the web is not only the social networks themselves. It’s what we can do
with this information. Different productivity tools have increased the way we can create value with
this information.
Knowledge
- Tweet
- Blogpost
- Workshop
- Specific groups
In social Learning is sharing knowledge just as important as receiving. The knowledge you
consume inspires you to create something new. Everybody has something to teach and now we
have the tools to create even more value.
What is Social Learning
- Personal bubble of knowledge created by different social networks.
- Combination of receiving and sending.
- Casual/informal learning (no testing, repeats, or control).
- A personal and a bit chaotic process.
- Continuous & small chunks.
The key aspects of Social Learning on a individual level.
Learning, working and personal tools are merging. Personal and
professional learning is under control of the individual.
— Jane Hart
This has happend over the last few years and it is becoming more and more relevant for
organisations to adapt to this style of learning…
Social Learning in a company or organization?
Organisations need to embrace the personal knowledge bubbles of their employees and find ways
to share these with the company.
“Dropbox Hack Week is an event where Dropboxers get back to their roots
and explore their wildest, most innovative ideas.”
“Once a month, we give a day back to employees to think creatively, work
on innovative projects, and invest in their careers. We call this InDay.”
So,… should everybody do Hack-days?
Hack-days are a great way to create an a low barrier environment for your employees. Here they
can share the knowledge from their personal bubble. By letting them experiment with what they
learned and continue to build their skill-sets. But might not be the best fit for every company.
Social Learning in a company
- Use the personal knowledge bubbles of your employees.
- Make knowledge accessible.
- A bit of chaos is ok, it’s not about control here.
- Community/culture driven
- Create a stage online/offline: events, hack-days,
presentations, blogs… a Gibbon library ;-)
When implementing Social Learning in your organization, here are some key aspects to keep in
mind.
5 tips, to create a Social Learning environment:
1. Remove al barriers to share knowledge.
2. Allow learning within the daily workflow
3. On demand. Create the flexibility to learn when you are ready.
4. Lots of social interaction. The ability to bounce ideas and thoughts.
5. Create stages to share knowledge without hierarchy
