Essay about Abraham Lincoln
22 Aug. 2009
Abraham Lincoln Hero or Racist?
Abraham Lincoln is arguably one of the most interesting presidents in the history of the United
States. Any research done on Lincoln will show, whether you agree or disagree with his
philosophies, that he was, and still is, a fascinating historical figure. There have been numerous
discussions regarding Lincoln before the Civil War, during the war as Commander In Chief, or his
views on slavery and racial equality; furthermore, vast debates on his views, strategies, and solutions
regarding events that helped shape our nation. Abraham Lincoln is such an interesting person that
discussions and debates will lead to more questions open to more discussion and debate. What was
Lincoln s view on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He still did not think blacks should have the right to vote, hold political offices, or marry white
people. He also still believed physical differences between the two races would prevent them from
living together socially and politically (186). Lincoln was against whites benefitting from slave
labor and did feel that blacks should be able to benefit from the fruits of their own labor. According
to Dinesh D Souza in her article Abraham Lincoln: Tyrant, Hypocrite, or Consummate Statesman ,
he was not, however, an abolitionist. Abolitionists wanted an immediate end to slavery and
believed the rights of slaves should not be compromised and that they had a duty to defend
freedom, unreservedly, and careless of the consequences (3).
What was the reason behind the Civil War? According to Carter G. Woodson and Charles H.
Wesley, when the Civil War started, Lincoln, in order to stay on the good side of supporters who
had voted him into office, publicly stated that he did not want to interfere with the slavery in the
South ( The Negro in the Civil War 361). Contrary to claims that he did not approve of slavery,
Lincoln clearly compromised the rights of slaves to be free in order to appease supporters of
slavery by evading the subject of slavery in the South. D Souza also asserts that Lincoln stated in
correspondence to Andrew Stephens, the former vice president of the Confederacy, that while we
think it is wrong, and ought to be restricted, it was not his intention to get

The Factum Myth
Our universe is like a web that connects each plane with others and all the planes was created by
the Principium, an arcane object placed in the first plane. That object created all worlds, even
the one where our story begin: the Factum , create by the hand of the four great gods:Jaswal, god
of light and life; Malkridos, god of Dark and death(the keeper of souls after the death); Shian, god
of the earth and Nacaltaal creator of the Aether. They gave life to the other minor Gods, between
them ther was the Traitors that became daemons and attacked their parents: Odras, Phiilim and
Niro; after the war the Traitors lost and they got imprisoned in the abyss. The world s made by 4

Submission to Local Network
Submission to Local Network October 1, 2010 Dear Sir/Madam, As the signatory of the UN Global
Compact, Cadbury has implemented many initiatives in its CSR strategy and has done a lot to
implement the ten principles. In this report, I am writing on behalf of Cadbury to propose the
recommendations for the implementation of the following two in the ten principles of the Global
Compact. Principle one requires that business should respect human rights including those in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And businesses are asked to do something to undertake
more environmental responsibility under principle eight. As an established industry leader in the

Nestle, another big company in our industry, has also assessed the societal interests from different
ranges of stakeholders when making their decisions and create shared value across each stage of its
value chain. Overall, we believe if these recommendations are put into practice by our Network
members, they will be able to perform better in human rights and environment issues and win good
reputation for their business and this will bring good economic outcomes in the long term. Also, for
the Local Network, when more businesses do better in undertaking their responsibility in these
issues, the Principles of the Global Compacts will be implemented better. Of course, there will be
some challenges and risks when these recommendations are carried out. The possible challenges
may include the unclear responsibility between different departments in the company. For example,
our HRET should be carried out in the human resource department and departments with
procurement functions. So when put into practice, it did not go smoothly. To solve this problem,
we propose someone be appointed to act as a go between in different departments. Also, it should be
clear in the corporate policy that the cooperation between these departments is needed to address
the human rights and environmental problems.

Contingency Cost For A Maintenance Contract Based On...
In this study, a tool was developed to estimate contingency cost for a maintenance contract based
on historical records of the CO on the road maintenance activities. In order to develop the tool, the
Visual C# and the R program were selected as development platforms. As historical data, 614 road
maintenance contracts were received from Kenya Rural Road Authority (KeRRA) in Kenya. These
data were used for the validation of the tool developed during this study. The steps that were
required to develop the contingency estimation tool is given in Figure 1.
For the contingency estimation tool, a database system was designed and all the contracts data were
imported to the database. Similarly, the necessary input and output interfaces were prepared. The
contingency percentage is estimated based on the input parameters such as work category, road
surface type, road condition, accessibility, weather condition, location name, and the total activity
cost.
At the beginning of the prediction, this tool queries the historical data on CO in the database for
the selected activity. Then, this tool prepares an ANN model for the data prediction. The neural
network is prepared by the R program and these data are used to train the neural network model.
Then, for that activity, the contingency is predicted. This process is repeated for each of activities
and the contingency required for the contract is computed based on the cost weightage of the
activities.

The Space Race Essay
The years after World War II was a time of great scientific and technological advancements. With
these advancements came great tension and rivalry between the United States and the former
Union of Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR). The biggest rivalry between the two superpowers
was the advancement in space technology. In 1952, the International Geophysical Year (IGY)
was established in which scientists stated that in the time between July 1, 1957 and December
31, 1958, solar activity would be at a high point. The IGY made it so that both the US and the
USSR became determined to be the first to reach space, and so the space race was born. During
the space race, the USSR made many launches that were very advanced and superior to the US....

This launch was extraordinary because it put the first living mammal into space. This satellite was
much heavier than Sputnik 1, having two cabins, one for the equipment and controls and another
for Laika, the dog. Laika s cabin provided her with oxygen, food, water and allowed the dog
enough room to lie down and stand (Siddiqi). It was predicted that Laika would live for ten days,
but due to thermal problems inside the satellite she only survived for about two. At the time of
Sputnik 2, there was no mention of the US even trying to send any living organism into space
because they were still having trouble with regular satellite launches. This launch not only further
emphasized the Soviet Union s superiority to the United States, but it also provided scientists with
the first data of a living organism in space and foreshadowed the future in human space travel. By
the anniversary of Sputnik 1, it seemed like the United States were catching up to the Soviet Union
in terms of satellites launched. The US had now launched three Explorers and one Vanguard while
the USSR had launched three Sputniks. Although the US had launched more satellite than the
USSR, Sputnik 1 weighed more than all four of the US satellites combined and Sputnik 3 weighed
and astonishing 2,950 pounds. The three US launches couldn t compare to the Soviet Union s
launches because the Sputnik launches were so much more technologically advanced, once

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of MLIS
Needless to say, the course duration suggested herewith needs a perspicacious discussion by
erudite LIS professionals considering all the pros and cons to survive the LIS programme in the
present age with full dignity as a discipline. One thing is very clear that total two years course
duration for BLIS and MLIS or 2 year integrated MLIS is not enough to fully equip a LIS studentto
match with the job responsibilities at present age. The process seems to be rigmarole but it is
certainly not that because it only needs to bring the erudite LIS professional to sit in one place to

Hitler s Appointment
Adolf Hitler s appointment as Chancellor of Germany in 1933 played a vital role in the beginning
of World War II. It was caused by a number of long term causes such as the Treaty of Versailles,
strategic political activities and the Great Depression. Consequences also occurred as a result of his
appointment such as transition from Weimar government to Nazi dictatorship, positive economic
improvement, persecution of Jews and other cultural minorities.
CAUSES
The Treaty of Versailles
Indirectly, the Treaty of Versailles was a major long term cause of Hitler s appointment. The Treaty
of Versailles was signed in 1919 after World War I in an attempt to punish Germanyfor their actions

The Nazis began to spread their racial ideologies very soon after Hitler was appointed chancellor
in 1933. They believed that Germans were racially superior and that Jews and other minorities
were a threat to the survival of the German race. Amongst the persecuted were other minority
groups, such as Romani an ethnic group originating from the Indian subcontinent Africans,
homosexuals and the handicapped. However, Jews, who made up less than 1% of the German
population in 1933, were the primary target of the Nazis racially provoked hatred. They were
unfairly blamed for the country s economic depression and defeat in World War One. Following
Hitler s appointment as chancellor, laws were passed that declared Jews second class citizens,
segregating them from those of German descent and forcing them out of their jobs. The Nazis
either seized Jewish businesses or forced them to be sold at exceptionally low prices. Between
1933 and 1935, laws emerged that allowed Romani, Africans, homosexuals and the handicapped to
undergo medical procedures to be sterilized so that they were no longer able to produce children.
Between 1933 and 1939, those belonging to minority groups were arrested and imprisoned in
concentration camps, so that they were no longer able to partake in society. These concentration

Taking a Look at Frederick Banting
In the year 1891, on the 14th of November Frederick Banting was brought onto this world in a
town 60 kilometres north of Toronto called Alliston. He was the last born of five other siblings
and lived in a middle class family. Frederick Banting was an average student and had a hard time
in completion of high school. He decided to study arts, however he failed. Banting always dreamt
of becoming a doctor and in September 1912, the University of Torontos Faculty of Medicine,
accepted him as a student (Nobelprize.org the official web site of Nobel Prize). Banting took a
strong liking to the disease known as Diabetes. His studies and research, led him to understand that
insulinhas control over the metabolism of sugar in the blood (Nobelprize.org the official web site
of Nobel Prize). On the night of October, 31, 1920, Banting got an idea from a medical journal.
He believes that if you could extract the secretion made by the pancreas, then you can further
understand and advance in the treatment of diabetes ((Library and Archives Canada). Banting
made the decision of moving to the University of Toronto to reveal and discuss his idea with J.J.R.
Macleod. Macleod provided an opportunity for Banting and Charles Best (his assistant), to start the
work on May, 17, 1921 (Library and Archives Canada). Good timing and luck were the main factors
which led the Torontonian researches to announce their discovery first. This is due to the fact that

Plot Structure Of A Short Story
The story that I believe had the most effective plot structure would be The Bicycle by Jillian
Horton. The first reason I believe this is that the story was the longest one out of the other ones read
in class. This means that the author had more space to position the introduction, rising action,
climax, falling action and the conclusion in spots that made sense. After reading this short storyI
found that I understood what happen better than other stories I have read in class. The second
reason I believe this story had the most effective plot is the introduction to the story. The
introduction gets right to the point introducing all of the characters and describing the setting to the
readers. In the short story the narrator named Hannah tells

Societies Effects quot;the Love Song of J. Alfred...
Society gives us a set of unspoken rules and regulations that must be abided by or else society
becomes ones own worst enemy; thus is Eliot s message in his poem, The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock. This poem has been given a cynical voice in which Eliot tries to convey his
message of modern society and its expectations. He is in a position in which he knows what the
flaws in society are but does not have the courage or the ability to convey the message to the rest
of the people. He fears what they might say and how they will treat him, will ruin him if he
exploits society. Eliot gives evidence of the mockery society exhibits in line 41: They will say:
`How his hair is growing thin! (775) He knows that there are certain things... Show more content on

This establishes the theme and thus the tone of the poem. Towards the end of the poem the
reader gains a sense of irony and sarcasm that is expressed within the tone: Till human voices
wake us, and we drown (778). Human voices is supposed to represent a helping hand in which
any person in trouble can be helped by humanity. However, these human voices only cause the
person in need to drown in their words. This is ironic because, as indicated above, humanity is
the coexistence of a fellow human with the help (if necessary and available) of another fellow
human when he/she is in need of it. However, metaphorically speaking, the person in need in the
poem (Alfred) only receives negativity and hostility from society and his fellow men, thus
causing him/her to drown in the words of the human voices. This is the most important set back
of society conveyed by Eliot in his poem. It is the last line in the poem and is the key to the
poem. Also, Eliot uses other text such as that, which is in the lines, But though I have wept and
fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a
platter, I am no prophet and here s no great matter (777); as an allusion to indicate his inability to
convey his message. He explains that even though he has prayed (perhaps for society) and wept
and fasted, he still can not send the true message that has encompassed himself and his soul.

Listening Is A Key Part Of Encoding And Decoding The Message
What is active listening, it the process of information, which uses all of our senses to convey a
message through perceiving of sound? Our, hearing, smell, taste and touch are part of our senses
that we sometimes use without knowing we are doing it. Moreover, listening correctly, can be a
crucial part of encoding and decoding the message, for clarification and understanding what the
message is conveying. While deciphering messages, you get a sense of understanding what the
message is trying to express. Next, is trying to remember or recall what the message is so that
you can retain it. Also, evaluating what you hear and decoded or deciphered it is essential to
understanding what the message is. When we actively listen, there is some paraphrasing during
this process, where you have to restate the information given by the speaker into your own words.
Lastly, responding to the message with an answer, it could be for learning purposes, personal,
enjoyment or even employment, it is important to listen to ensure understanding actively. As we
respond, there is an answer and feedback given (DeVito 2016) as a response. RELATE Do you or

The Kite Runner, By Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini once said: there are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood. Rape in
Afghanistan is said to be an epidemic, but according to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the
term is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. Rape
in this country is viewed as something that is inevitable and cannot be stopped. Usually, rape also
involves domestic violence, hence the reason they re paired together. Contrary to common
misconception, men are raped as well as women, especially children of both genders. In the Kite
Runner, rape is a topic that is prevalent in and throughout the book. Bacha Bazi is even a part of
the Kite Runner.
Bacha Bazi is a phrase that is a significant piece of the plot of the Kite Runner. It alludes to the
rape of little boys. In the story, the protagonist, Amir, must go to Afghanistan to save his nephew
from being a bacha bazi sex slave. With Amir s decision to take action, he internally hopes that it
will rid him of the guilt he felt as a child when he saw Hassan, his brother, raped. His guilt
manifests over time because he did not support him by standing up for him. As part of the
practice, rich people who buy the boys as slaves sometimes them dress up in female clothing.
Sometimes they re forced to wear fake breasts. Prepubescent teens and even young children,
specifically the boys, are seen as a socially acceptable substitute for girls in this society. Afghanistan

Information Processing Techniques Office At D.a
Introduction
From its inception in the early 60 s the Internet was used to send information, this was pioneered by
the computer scientist J.C.R. Licklider of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He conceived
the idea of a network of interconnected computers which would allow data and other information to
be shared no matter the location. This led him to be appointed head of the Information Processing
Techniques Office at D.A.R.P.A. (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) then called
A.R.P.A. While there he convinced his successors and fellow M.I.T. researcher Lawrence G Roberts
that his work was important and that it should continue.
In 1964 Roberts and another M.I.T. Alumni Leonard Kleinrock devised a system of
communications using packets rather than circuits (this was the first step to actual computer
networking). In 1965 while working alongside Thomas Merrill, Roberts manged to connect his
computer in Massachusetts to another in California, thus creating the world s first W.A.N. (Wide
Area Network).
By 1966 Roberts went to D.A.R.P.A. and quickly set about devising the ARPANET with Licklider.
This was greenlighted and by the early 1970 s technology had caught up with the dreams of it s
visionaries. The ARPANET itself laid the foundations to which we now know as the Internetand
had pioneered the use of electronic mail, data transfer and networking between computers. Soon
similar systems became more readily available and were offered to N.A.S.A., the

Internet Impacts Society Negatives
How Rumors on the Internet Impacts Society Negatively?
The internet can a powerful tool to use for things like education. At the same time, it can also be a
weapon used to hurt another individual. When these type of rumors are discovered all over the
internet, most people may believe it to be false. Some examples come from the New York Times
that includes things like the Boston Marathon bombings and the conspiracy theory that the Obama
administration manipulated unemployment statistics. ( Nyhan, 2014) However, if the rumor has
indisputable facts, then it will be believable enough to make it true. Anyway, the point is that
rumors are very dangerous and can inflict physical, mental, and psychological pain to people.
People may spread rumors to gain power, seek revenge, improve their self image, gain attention,
or other types of reasons. Whatever the reason, rumors can happen to anybody ranging from
young adolescent teens to adults in the workforce. Here are some of the causes created by the
spreading of rumors that ultimately destroys the lives of people living in society. One cause of
spreading rumors over the internet is that people will lose their trust in someone. Teens seem to

Gender Roles Since High School Essay
Gender roles resurfaced as a pivotal factor in my life during my late adolescence. In our culture
different sports are considered to be male and female dominated respectively. Unfortunately little
is done to challenge or resist these societal norms and I experienced this first hand during my
senior year of high school. Volleyball, which is considered to be a sport primarily for girls and
women, was not offered to boys at my high school. Subsequently, I was forced to petition for
approval towards the creation of a male volleyball which ultimately went unsuccessful due to time
constraints and unwillingness to help from staff and administration. While this example pertained
to male exclusion countless female friends of mine struggled to participate in male dominated
sports throughout high school including wrestling and lacrosse. Part of what schools are supposed
to be doing under Title IX, and often are not doing, is regularly assessing girls interest, looking to
see what sports girls are playing and asking girls what they want to play that is currently not being
offered (Wallace). In this instance my districts athletic director directly impacted the sporting
experiences for the entire student body by failing to adhere to sufficient standards with respect to
gender norms. High school sports presented a unique culture with respect to sport. Trends
throughout my high school strongly reinforced dominant ideologies throughout society. Links

When it comes to juicer market, not all can be compared or compete with master brands like
Breville and Cuisinart. They have established and proved what their products are capable of. The
amount of spend on a juicer, must have a direct correlation with the benefit derived out of it.
Factors like large usage period, better quality and quantity of juice and ease of maintenance need to
be considered before purchasing a high quality juicer. For those who require all the above
mentioned criteria, Hurom HU 100 slow juicer would be an ideal choice.
The Hurom slow juicer performs functions similar to other juicers available in market. However,

By taking a look at the user reviews, it is obvious that Hurom has found a place in hear of
customers. One positive review stated by a customer shows how easy it is to clean this device.
While other branded juicers require some skill and effort to dis assemble and clean, Hurom can
be assembled and disassembled effortlessly. No diagrams or manuals are required to do this.
Another positive review proved the blade effectiveness. To break Almonds without soaking it
overnight is tedious. But Hurom does this effectively for morning milk with its effective blades.
The fineness of crushed almond portrays the outstanding quality of Horum slow juicers. Above all,
the lowest noise levels are a strong point. Compared to other available juicers, Horum HU 100
makes very less noise while juicing. Even with wheat grass, Horum does an efficient job which
customers cannot expect on juicers from top most or reputed brands.
Some of the common complaints on Horum are blade jamming. This is a situational defect. If
the customer tries to push the consumables too hard before it is crushed, then the blade would be
jammed. If the eatables are very hard, then users might need to cut it down to smaller pieces to
make the blade to rotate freely. However, this is not a fault with Horum juicer. Occasional breaks
can happen, which can be tackled by filing warranty claims. Breaks are very rare and do not tend
to happen frequently. This case is the same even for

Friar in Canterbury Tales Essay
Friar in Canterbury Tales Chaucer s attitude towards the friar is one of sarcasm. The friar is
wanton and merry, but this pleasant sounding description is actually packed with mockery. By
the 14th century, friars, who were supposed to give up all worldly things and live only by
begging for food and alms, were almost totally corrupt. They were known for flattering the rich
and deceiving the poor, and especially for seducing women in outright disregard for their vow of
celibacy. Chaucer s Friar, Hubert, is a limiter, one who is licensed to beg in a certain area. He s
married off women giving each of his young women what he could afford her which implies that he
seduced them first. He s highly believed and intimate with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He knows all the bars and is more familiar with barmaids and innkeepers than the lepers or

donate to the poor and sick any leftover money from begging. To make it more ironic, Chaucer says
it s not right for someone of Hubert s profession to be acquainted with lepers, since after all there s
no money there but when it comes to the rich and the food sellers, suddenly he s courteous and
humble. He couldn t care less about giving money to charity.
His holy how d ye do is so pleasant that he can always get a farthing from her . Here it is clear
that the Friar gets more money from his illegal takings than his legal calling. He wears clothes
better suited to a pope than to the cloistered scholars with thread bare habit hardly worth a dollar,
but much more like a Doctor or a Pope . He also meddles in civil disputes out of court, to arbitrate
disputes on settling days (for a small fee) . Friars were allowed to represent the poor, but had strict
orders not to interfere in such cases. Hubert even lisps to make his English sound more appealing,

Cesar Chavez Influence On Migrant Workers
Labor unions have been instrumental in the lives of workers throughout American history, and have
led to important advances in the American workforce. Throughout history there have been patterns
of exploitation of immigrant workers by businesses in order to increase profits; the Mexican
migrant workers of southern California are the most recent historical group to fall into this pattern
of exploitation mostly from their lack of organization. Cesar E. Chavez was a great organizer and
leader of the United Farm Workerslabor union. Robert Kennedy referred to him as one of the
heroic figures of our time. Chavez used his life experiences in order to better the lives of many
migrant workers in America. Key points in Chavez s life that had... Show more content on

Chavez wanted to help the community that he came from, as well as others like it. The migrant
worker community became his main focus, this resulted his creation of the UFW in 1962
(Chavez Foundation). His earlier life as a migrant worker would be a strong influence for
attaining better working conditions for those workers. Early in Chavez s life, he was exposed to
the hardships of migrant working. When Chavez was 10 his family was forced from their home in
Yuma, Arizona because of back taxes and because of the depression, his family couldn t pay the
payments (Castillo and Garcia, 7). Chavez began migrant work when he was 14, and the injustices
had a memorable effect. Migrant workers were often exploited because of their lack of organization
in a uniform union group, something that Chavez would eventually change. In future years the
UFW would give migrant workers a voice in the conditions under which they were living and
working. Strikes, boycotts, and other nonviolent protests were essential to the UFW s ability to
attain advancements in the Mexican American workplace. Though strikes previous to 1964 were
often unsuccessful because of the Bracero program that was implemented by both the United
States and Mexican governments. Farm owners encouraged this program because of labor
shortages during wartime, but by the 1950 s the Bracero workers were being used to undercut
wages and break strikes by the migrant workers. This caused

Judy Chicago Rejection Drawing Analysis
Judy Chicago s feminist artistic career ironically began with minimalist styled art. Minimalist
art is defined by the Tate (a highly respected institution in London that runs 4 separate museums)
as an extreme form of abstract art developed in the USA in the 1960s and typified by artworks
composed of simple geometric shapes based on the square and the rectangle . Its essence is best
condensed by artist Frank Stella when he describes his minimalist paintings as What you see is
what you see . Judy Chicago was trained as a minimalist artist and she explains in a lecture she

interested when a friend of hers told her about a gallery owner who would possibly be willing to
give Chicago a show in her hometown. Ultimately the gallery owner rejected her work and
turned her down and Chicago was devastated. The second drawing in the series Childhood
Rejection Drawing addressed the contradiction between Judy Chicago s rhetoric and art. She
calls it a gap and explains that the structure that masks her content stems from her time in
graduate school where artists would reject her work that lacked structure. Chicago realized that
she could not artistically be herself if she wanted her degree. She goes on to describe the rejection
she felt from her father because he disapproved of what she exposed. Female Rejection Drawing is
very profound in it she explains how male culture denies that women have separate experience.
She addressed the contradiction between her art and rhetoric and explains that it comes from her
attempt to use the male established art language to explain her female experience. She ends this

Lewis Cass And Andrew Jackson s The Cherokee Removal Act
The Cherokee Removal Act is believed to have been causation of prolonged engagement between
the settlers of Georgia, Alabama, and parts of North and South Carolina up until 1836, when
Andrew Jackson officially signed it into law. Andrew Jackson had a lot to say about the need for
removal of natives and two main reasons why it has been such a lengthy procedure. Another man
who also had something to say about the matter at hand was Lewis Cass who was Governor of the
Michigan Territory from 1816 1831. He was well known as one of the most experienced, and highly

Andrew Jackson in his state of the union address of 1830 had the pleasure to announce his long
fought battle in favor of removal had began coming to existence. Humanity and Philanthropy
were two of his main points for why this has been such a strenuous task put upon the nation by
the natives. Humanity has often wept over the fate of the aborigines of this country, and
philanthropy has been long busily employed in devising means to advert it. (127) Jacksonbrings
up the point regarding Americans moving west and humanity not weeping at the fact that they
leave but are rather joyful due to the freedoms of body and mind (128) America grants. Jackson
even goes far as asking the American public How many thousands of our own people would

removal procedure and about how the government can be fair and liberal if they agreed to the
laws of the states from which they are present or how the government can be harsh if the
alternative for removal isn t accepted by the natives. Both Andrew Jackson and Cass have similar
arguments relating to Philanthropy between Civilized people and the Indians believing it has

Nursing Assessment Of Respiratory System
CONCEPT 5: NURSING ASSESSMENT OF RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
This concept is taken from Block 4, Module 6 which is entitled as Assessment of respiratory system
. The respiratory system comprises of different organs used in respiration. Respiration involves
inhalation and exchange of oxygen and carbondioxide between living organisms and the
environment. The organs of respiration include; the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, 2 bronchi,
bronchioles, 2 lungs and muscles of breathing (the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm).
5.1 Personal context
Respiratory system assessment is the process of evaluating the functioning and condition of a
patient s respiratory system. During assessment of the respiratory system, the nurse takes the
patient s history and perform a physical examination on the patient. The nurse takes the patients
data which include personal history, family history, history of current and past respiratory problem,
allergy history or reactions to certain drugs, foods, allergens etc., and occupational history. The
nurse also objective data of the patient, these data will help her to know the respiratory condition of
the patient and factors that predisposes the patient to respiratory problems. The nurse also conducts
a physical examination which include inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. Findings
from the physical examination will help her in making diagnosis and to plan adequate nursing care.

Today, this is done without too much stress and strain on either side; usually this takes place in
meeting rooms in a very civilized manner with management, employees, and union negotiators.
Deals and concessions are made on both sides and once the final contract is agreed on, business
continues on. By paying dues and certifying affiliations, union employees gain the power in
numbers needed to ensure a better quality of life for themselves and their families. In most cases
relationships between management and employees continue on with mutual respect, and the
business continues to make a profit. It wasn t always this easy. In the beginning, the union was
initially considered a dangerous criminal act against businesses and instead of deals and
concession the negotiations consisted of murders and vandalism. In an early colonial America, as
society wrestled with massive economic and social changes, labor problems arose. Low wages,
long hours, as in dangerous work, and abusive supervisory practices led to high employee turnover.
This resulted in violent strikes and threats of social instability. John R. Commons founded and

Projections, Forecasts, And Estimates Essay
2.4 Projections, Forecasts, or Estimates The definition of projections, forecasts, and estimates are
all different and should not be used without knowing the exact meanings which are: Projection: the
familiar word for statements that are taken from mathematics and are based on inferences decided
in advance. Forcast: the statement that has the highest probability to happen in the future. Estimate:
is about specific statistics from the past or present statistics. o Estimates fill in the years between
two different census. 3.1.1 Typolography of projection Methods Subective projections are
assumptions, and they stay away from elaborate orderly and procedural methods. They can only
show impressions of predispositions of the later to come population. Objective projections take the
quantitative way of gathering data and use a quatitative strategy to attain a projected outcome.
Objection projections dependo n the selection of the right projection technique. The major
projection methods are: structual method, cohort component, and the trend extrapolation method.
3.4 Trend Extrapolation Methods Extending the application of past trends into the time beyond the
observation range is the essence of all the extrapolation methods. The extrapolation method is best
used for modest sized population projections that have low data needs , inexpensive, and able to be
used effortlessly. Sometimes data, such as population trends is easier to see and understand in

The Normal Distribution Is A Continuous, Unimodal And...
The normal distribution is a continuous, unimodal and symmetric distribution. For a typical normal
distribution, a mesokurtic (which means to have a moderate peak and tails for a graph), definition
is one that has a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1. While this is the case, there might be other
normal distributions with means that are not 0 and a standard deviationthat is not 1, for these cases,
we use their means and standard deviation. For example, if a normal distributionhad a mean of 2
and a standard deviation of 3, then in order to clarify that it is indeed a normal distribution, we
write N( 2,3). Among the normal distributions, we have a standard normal, exponential, uniform
and beta. These are varieties of distributions we can get within a normal distribution based on
factors like number of cases for example and where the cases were drawn from. At times when it
gets complicated to distinguish between the standard deviation of a variable and that of a sampling
distribution, there is a solution. The standard deviation for a sampling distribution is called a
standard error and this literally means that if a sampling distribution is normal, then 68% of its
samples will lie within one standard error of the mean and 98% within 1.98 standard error of the
mean. The normal distribution is useful not just due a random variable following a normal
distribution, but also because the Central Limit Theorem, which is a theorem that shows the
sampling distribution of the mean

Positive And Negative Effects Of Globalization
Globalization affected the economy in South Asia, specifically Bangladesh, Philippines, and
Afghanistan, in both good ways and bad ways. Bangladesh is one of the countries who have
been affected negatively. The Bangladesh government should enforce the labor law in
Bangladesh. The Philippines has been impacted positively, however they should still work on
business freedom. Afghanistan has also been impacted negatively, and the government should
inaugurate a free educational program for the struggling families. Bangladesh was impacted
negatively by Globalization. Bangladesh has been known to have had incidents where workers
have lost lives due to the poor labor conditions they were working upon. Workers are told to
work long shifts every day, receiving very little pay for the work that they did. In the article titled
Factory Collapses in Bangladesh , by The Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights, It states
how the standard shift for a worker is 13 14 ВЅ hours. This adds up to 90 100 hours/week, with
only 2 days off in the entire month. The money that the workers received ranged from 12 22
cents/hour, depending on the age of the worker. This means that Globalization caused the
factories to move to countries like Bangladesh to have more workers working for longer periods
of time and pay them as little money as possible. Bangladesh has one of the most lowest wages in
the world, Working in the factories means making less money because the owners ignore the laws.

There are many methods used to abort a fetus. Some are quite gruesome, while others are less
intrusive. The D C (Dilation Curettage) is occasionally used up to the twelfth week. The cervix is
dilated and a cruet is inserted into the uterus. The baby s body is then cut into pieces and removed
by suction. The uterine wall is then scraped, removing the placenta to empty the entire uterus. A D E
(Dilation Evacuation) can be performed up to eighteen weeks. The uterus is entered with a forceps

If it is born still alive, it is uncared for and left to die. The next type of abortion is called
Prostaglandin. This procedure can be used during the second half of the pregnancy. A compound

and pushes out the baby. The contractions are so severe, that many babies are crushed to death.
Again, if the baby is born still alive, they are then left to die. The RU 486 used in the seventh
week of pregnancy is a synthetic steroid that blocks the hormone Progesterone. Once given the RU

baby. There is another abortion drug named Ella that works the same way as the RU 486. The final
abortion procedure is that of Suction Abortion. After the cervix is dilated, a tube with a serrated tip

Factors to Determine the Validity of Information Sources...
Individuals such as university or high school students are, at one point or another in their

world today, which covers a vast amount of fields and all this information is readily available to
the public but it is often unclear to these students that all the information available may not always
be credible and actually reliable or even true. The negligence of these students often results in non

lead to inadvertent plagiarism too. This report focuses on what makes sources of information more
reliable and credible than others, with a specific focus on research reports.
Readers seek sources of information that is trustworthy. That the creator, author or researcher s
ideas are their own is substantiated mainly by evidence. When given the task to have a research
report written up, it usually entails doing research and finding information created by others, this
being the case, it is imperative that credible information should be used. Remember that if your
audience has found the source you have cited from as a non credible source it could result in the
relationship between you and your audience to suffer. There are various factors that determine the

There are also a number of downsides to the area because of economic impacts that the travel
and tourism industry bring that mostly affects the locals of the area. First is the increase in
living costs. As more and more tourists come to the area, tourism related facilities increase the
prices of their goods knowing that most tourists can afford their prices. A good example of this
negative impact is taxi drivers charging tourists more than the usual. Second is leakage.
Leakage is defined as the amount of money for supplies and services paid for outside an area or
in simple terms, money that does not benefit the economy of the area. The economic benefits of
the area can be lost if the goods and services are imported rather than for the local goods and
services to be used. Leakage can be avoided by sourcing local materials, using local products,
allowing local people to sell in resorts and hotels and employing more local people. Third impact
is the decline of traditional employment. As the tourism industry grows there is a bigger demand
for people to be employed in it. More and more people are attracted to this industry for it provides a
more attractive option rather than the harder, lower paid traditional jobs. This then results to the
traditional industries suffering for the younger generation no longer want to learn the skills of the

A Streetcar Named Desire Light Essay
In both The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams makes use of
very specific light cues. In his works, Williams uses lighting to declare relationships, portray
moods, and connect with the audience. Tennessee Williams uses light in The Glass Menagerie and
A Streetcar Named Desire to make the audience feel the characteristics of Blanche, Laura, and
Stanley, the relationships between characters, and to show that The Glass Menagerie is a memory
play.
Throughout A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche portrays herself as a women who is not confident
enough to show who she really is. Blanche cannot stand the presence of a bare light bulb, therefore
she covers it with a paper lantern. In fact, this references to the stage ... Show more content on

In fact, he rips the paper lantern off of the light to show truth and reality about Blanche. Stanley
states to Blanche, you cover the light bulb with a paper lantern, and lo and behold the place has
turned into Egypt and you are the Queen of the Nile, (Williams A Streetcar Named Desire 158).
He is basically stating that Blanche tries to transform herself to a better state, hiding behind one
big lie by using the paper lantern, and when he uncovers the light bulb, he is revealing the truth.
When Stanley talks about his physical interactions with women, he uses the reference of getting
the colored lights going, (Williams A Streetcar Named Desire 133). To add, by Stanley stating,
When we first met, me and you, you thought I was common...You showed me the snapshot of the
place with the columns. I pulled you down off them columns and how you loved it, having them
colored lights going! (Williams A Streetcar Named Desire 137), he is telling Stella that before he
became part of Stella s life she was like Blanche, trying to change what she wanted. However,
Stanley, with his physical interactions, shows her reality (Shvey 69). Stanley, through the use and
reference of light, is seen as a realist and negative

The Future Of Black English And Its Academic Impact On...
The Future of Black English and its Academic Impact on African American Children
Introduction
Language plays a key role in communication in any society, culture and organization. This medium
of social interaction is universal and has been passed down for centuries as a legacy. Therefore, it is
imperative that the purity of the language is kept within each framework of heritage. Culture also
plays a very important role in the evolution of language. It is the foundation of social engagement
and personal commitment. Verbal and non verbal communication can help define the way in which
intercultural communication is conducted, and is of significance as it allows for individuals to
learn the differences that exist in the language of various cultures. Communication of any
magnitude, if fully achieved can be one of the most rewarding experiences, since by learning the
language one becomes familiar with the culture.
Language in the Black culture has been evolving since the early days of slavery. In those earlier
days slaves were not taught to read or write, so they developed their own language. This was
advantageous because the language allowed them to communicate and helped lead to the success of
the Underground Railroad. For that reason, the Language of the Black culture plays a major role in
the journey through history. The term Black English is sometimes referred to as African American
Vernacular English (AAVE) or Black Vernacular English (BVE) and is spoken in a variety

Impact Of William Penn On Religious Freedom
William Penn s Influence on Religious Freedom
In March of 1681, William Penn was given the ownership of a large piece of land which we
today call Pennsylvania (Document A). As a teenager in the 1660s, Penn was kicked out of
Oxford for expressing his religious views and not attending the religious services that were
required. He then joined a radical religious group known as the Quakers who were persecuted in
England Only 13 years before he was granted Pennsylvania, Penn was held captive for his religious
beliefs and the King requested that Penn publicly deny his beliefs. William Penn, the founder of
Pennsylvania, established a colony based on the idea of religious liberty, equality, and self
government which served as the foundation of America s constitutional rights in a secular
government wherein all citizens have the rights to freely practice their religious beliefs; these ideas
still impact the government s inaction concerning citizens religious practices.
William Penn believed that the key principle of religious toleration was respecting religious liberties
and promoting peace. Penn believed that respecting these individual liberties would produce
economic prosperity and construct a strong government controlled by the people. Penn places these
ideas into real world practice by establishing the colony of Pennsylvania, and by making religious
tolerance not only a law but a key tenet in his colonial constitution. Penn recruited adventurers and
prosperous supporters

Ttc s Subway System
INTRODUCTION
This report uses operations research methods to prioritize the installation of transit accessibility
upgrades on the Toronto Transit Commission subway system.
The distance people with mobility challenges must travel to accessible stations was minimized
during incremental system improvements using nonlinear programming with binary decision
variables. The process was performed using Excel s Solver feature, and based on TTC data and
distance data scraped from Google Maps using the gmapsdistance R package. The result was a list
prioritizing the 30 stations currently without wheelchair accessibility.

SOLUTION EVALUATION
Excel s solver function was used to walk through all meaningful values for the resource constraint,
yielding a satisficing prioritized project schedule. The decrease in the objective function looks
approximately exponential, typical of a Pareto distribution. The formulation of the problem allows
low direct cost stations to be prioritized in the case that they lower the cost of adjacent stations. The
full prioritized schedule is shown in Table 2. These results show that improvements at
Islington, Coxwell, College, Sherbourne, Runnymede, and Rosedale would have indirect benefits
that make improvements more valuable than present day contributions to the objective function
suggest. Conversely, while those indirect benefits result in other improvements having lower than
expected utility. The stations affected are Royal York, Woodbine, Wellesley, High Park,
Greenwood, Castle
Frank, and Summerhill. Some of these stations are still high priority, such as Royal
York, but improvements will be less effective than expected based on ridership.
When comparing the plan the TTC currently has regarding the order of station to be upgraded with
accessible entrances is different when compared to the

Differences Between Good And Evil In The Demon King
As Eric Burdon stated, inside each of us, there is a seed of both good and evil. Eric was trying to
explain how individuals constantly debate which side will win, and how individuals struggle with
both sides. Even though one may have a crime backround, he or she could have understandable
reasons for the act committed. In the book The DemonKing by Cinda Williams Chima, the
differences between the clan people and the wizards clash. Han Cuffs Alister had a history as a
thief, and was part of a gangcalled the Raggers. The Cuffs in his name is meant for the
permenantly attached silver bracelets he wears on his wrists. Han lives among the clan, and is an
indigent individual. Han had stolen money and food for his family, but he also had a... Show more

Micah Bayar had been punished by his father because of using the amulet when he was not
properly trained or of the wizardry age. While Raisa, the princess, had been in the mountains
waiting for Micah with her mother, she saw the fire coming. This fire caused fear among the
Queen s Guard, and Captain Byrne, the royal captain of the soldiers. It also spread fear amongst
the rest of the royal individuals. Since that had set everybody off, people started questioning the
decisions of the Queen, specifically outsiders, and clan people. Another example, when Han had
escaped from the Southies, the day after, six Southies were found dead on the ground, and it didn
t look like the work of a knife. People threw accusations at the Raggers, Han included, even though
he had left the gang. To encourage demonstratation, Han had been walking in the night to
Southbridge Temple. Coated figures approached him. Rumors of these creatures had said they
were monsters, demons. They pressed Han into revealing Shiv s hideout, and that he would be
rewarded. Han was unharmed by these demons, as his cuffs protected him, with their magical
wonders, but the monsters had recognized him because of the cuffs. Now demons were after Shiv,
and Shiv was trying to have Han protect him, but Han didn t want to go deeper into the sea of
trouble and destruction. For this reason, the amulet truly made its mark with

Additionally, many of our existing allies, mainly Canada have to be involved. Working closely
with all of whom have an interest will help to mitigate costs through cost sharing, elimination of
redundancies and to leverage strengths of each partner. The Arctic endeavor should truly be a joint
effort as there are major benefits to work across the public private divide as private companies are
looking for economic growth, others may be looking for scientific opportunities, but all need to
ensure their security in the region.
Identifying the parties is the easy part, aligning and leveraging their capability is the difficult
part. As per General Jacoby, We need to identify what we re missing that is needed to meet the
requirements for Arctic security and defense. Until we have a full understanding of the strengths
and resources that are being brought forth by the identified joint effort, we will not be able to
align missions identifying the opportunities and the threats that will prevent us from reaching
them. It is imperative we create a forum of where all parties identified can be brought together to
perform the necessary evaluation to meet the stated objectives. This is the time to set the tone and
to remove (or at least manage) the FUD factor, fear of uncertainty and doubt. We have to set the
vision. The policy is well communicated and can be viewed more as the

Orphanages In The 1800s
Attachment is vital to development. John Bowlby (1988) states, Study after study attest that
healthy, happy, and self reliant adolescents ad young adults are the products of stable homes in
which both parents give a great deal of time and attention to children (p.2). This statement has
powerful implication for children and infants without parents who spend most, if not all of their
young life in orphanages; more specifically orphanages where attention is minimal. In 1729 the
first orphanage was established in the United States. In the 1800 s orphanages grew and in the mid
1800 s charitable groups established 56 institutions for children (Bremner, 1970, p. 5). Downs

Even in places where the minority population is small the amount of children removed from their
families was still large, in fact about three times as high as their proportion in the general
population. Bremner (1974) states, Although the rate of child welfare services to Negro children
was higher...behavioral and emotional problems were reported for a considerably smaller
proportion of Negro children... This raised the question for some professionals that whether
placement of minority group children is precipitated by poverty and lack of supportive resources,
rather than disruptive family relationships or perceived habits of the child (p. 8). The removal rate
of Native American children was high as well. Like African American children there were obvious
overlaps between removal from the home and poverty. As well during that time most social workers
were Caucasian and tended to have different cultural standards in terms of family life therefore
creating convolution. Like the circumstances of Native American children being taken from their
home in the turn of the century, Native American children, when taken from their home often lost

The Social and Political Influences Leading up to the...
The Social and Political Influences Leading up to the First World War Romanticism began in the
closing decades of the Eighteenth Century. Influencing all spheres of life, pervading the populace
of Europe and the first half of the Nineteenth Century with idealistic, yet unreal sentiment.
Contradicting any romantic or idealistic belief were the uniform followers of rationalism and
conservatism, descendents of Puritanism that arose in the Church of England during the early 17th
Century. The German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann quoted in retrospect infinite longing was the
essence of romanticism, if this definition is accepted, it may be said that it created in Europe, an
illicit hunt for a utopian society. This I theorize is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The southern Germanic states were forced to accept Prussian hegemony, and Germany as it is
known today was formed. Within the space of thirty years, Germany had gone from being a cluster
of insignificant states to the most powerful state in Europe full of nationalistic sentiment, patriotic
people and militaristic Kaisers. It is easily forgotten that Italy, similar to Germany is only a
recently created state. Little over a century ago Italy was divided into five main groups, all subject
to political arrangements made by their foreign rulers. It took 21 years of resistance in the name of
Irredentism, to oust the puppet Autocratic government. Liberal views were enough, Liberal views
and the invasion of Austria(1848), and for a second time in 1859, the invasions were used in order
to establish the nation, and to expel Austrian emigrants from northern Italy, the theme of unifying
ones nation through military action has been exemplified again. In order to determine a nation on
the global stage, an expansionistic foreign policy has been held by both Germany and Italy, and the
result has been successful each time fusing the populace closer together by attaining a sense of
achievement through hardship and therefore a joint heritage and culture. Now

drastic measures to find the light at the end of the tunnel. The unnamed narrator and protagonist
of Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk finds himself in this exact predicament after struggling to find
meaning and purpose in his ordinary and cyclic life. Due to the pressures of work the narrator
develops insomnia and disguises himself as a cancer patient in order to seek comfort and
attention at support groups such as the Remaining Men Together. (Palahniuk 18) While attending
these support groups the narrator notices a woman, Marla Singer, another fake patient who
reminds him of his weakness and loneliness and, as a result, he decides it is better to stay away

The most memorable and significant works are the ones that address problems within society,
and this 1996 novel is a prime example of the postmodern era that has left its mark nearly two
decades after its release(Choules). Although it is hard to attribute one definition to
postmodernism, it can be seen as a concept that arose after World War II, characterized by
portraying the capitalistic values of the Western world. (Philosophy) Turning to destruction and
violence to cope with the feelings of inequality, which are still a part of society today, are
cleverly included in the novel Fight Club. As the fight clubs grow the sudden commitment to this

Newspaper Bridge Project
The Newspaper bridge project is a project where students are given the challenge to make a bridge
using newspaper, straws, and tape. Each material has a price. 1 sheet of paper $10, 1 straw $1,
and 10 cm of tape $2. Students were given the challenge to make a bridge only using $25 of
materials. In this essay, I will be explaining the process which my group constructed our bridgefor
this project. And answer the question; How to construct a newspaper bridge that will hold the most
weight and is cost efficient with the given materials?
My group s bridge held a lot more weight than I thought. Our group tried different ideas for our
prototype. At first, we wanted to only use straws for our bridge. We first tried to weave straws

They were using all of the money but had a low cost effectiveness ratio. Since their bridge was
very heavy and was mostly made out of only newspaper their bridge was probably very weak
because it had no reinforcements. My group used straws to reinforce our rods the same way that
steel bars are used in concrete to reinforce it. Without the reinforcement, the beams would crack
because of the load causing the beam to be in tension. Their bridges were made with only paper
with tape holding it together. As compared to my group s bridge we tried our best to reinforce
our bridge with straws. With no reinforcements, their bridge collapsed under the weight put on it.
Other groups tried to make a bridge with the least amount of money hold the most weight. In the
future, I would try to make a bridge this way. An example of this would be the group of Tucker,
Hilary, and Jack in G band. They were runner up to us in the strength efficiency ratio with 1167 g
held/1g of mass, but their bridge only cost $14 and their cost effectiveness ratio was 1000g/$1.
The amount of paper they used caused their bridge to be a little bit heavier than ours. I find it
surprising how their bridge held so much since it was not like any of the other bridge. I think
making a bridge this way would be more of a challenge in the

The Importance Of The AP Literature Exam
What is the AP literature exam, and why should I care? Many high school students ask themselves
this question as they are drawing near to the date of their exam. The fact that this question is asked
constantly is exactly the reason that Mr. McGee has assigned this essay to the AP Literature class.
The AP Lit testconsists of two parts, and the first is the multiple choicesection. The second part, has
three free response essayquestions that must be answered in two hours.Of course, if a student
wishes to do well on a test they should have an understanding of how it is scored, and this AP
test is no different. Using the text Five Steps to a Five, and Crash Course, a student can develop
an idea of what the AP Literature Exam will look like. The first part of the AP Lit Exam is a
section comprised of fifty five multiple choice questions that thoroughly test a student s knowledge
about prose and poetry. Within these questions You can expect to see 4 5 excerpts of prose and
poetry, (Howell). These excerpts are without titles, authors or a date, the student is completely
reliant upon their knowledge to answer. Although the date of the texts are not given, one can expect
it to be between the 16th century and the 21st century, not that that helps at all. Most of these works
will be in English, but occasionally they will be written in a translated form. According to experts,
there are eight types of multiple choice questions that may appear on the test: reading

Capital Punishment Should Be Eliminated
Throughout the history of humanity, punishments have been in place for the wrongful acts of
citizens within governmental systems of all kinds. In America during the early days of the country,
the death penalty was a more viable solution than it appears today due to the quality of the prisons,
which couldn t sustain prisoners long term. (Von Drehle, 2015). Today, this is not an issue with
prisons that are provided both by the state and federal governments and that are fully capable of
holding offenders throughout the length of a life sentence (Von Drehle, 2015). However, many will
argue that capital punishmentshould be eliminated. Foes of the death penalty are split into two
groups with one that argues that capital punishment should and will cease based upon public
support, that it doesn t deter crime, and the current processes of executions are too costly and
problematic. The other will take a more humanitarian approach and claim that it is not the role of
the government to decide the fate of an individual, and that crimes punishable by death are not
justifiable. Determent, morals, severity of the crime, and revenge are among the many arguments
that are geared in favor of protecting a centuries old government system. These groups give more
pragmatic reasons as arguments. Currently, the United States is alone among other democracies by
not being in similar standing as western European countries, such as Germany and France, where
the death penalty has been completely

  • 2. Essay about Abraham Lincoln 22 Aug. 2009 Abraham Lincoln Hero or Racist? Abraham Lincoln is arguably one of the most interesting presidents in the history of the United States. Any research done on Lincoln will show, whether you agree or disagree with his philosophies, that he was, and still is, a fascinating historical figure. There have been numerous discussions regarding Lincoln before the Civil War, during the war as Commander In Chief, or his views on slavery and racial equality; furthermore, vast debates on his views, strategies, and solutions regarding events that helped shape our nation. Abraham Lincoln is such an interesting person that discussions and debates will lead to more questions open to more discussion and debate. What was Lincoln s view on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He still did not think blacks should have the right to vote, hold political offices, or marry white people. He also still believed physical differences between the two races would prevent them from living together socially and politically (186). Lincoln was against whites benefitting from slave labor and did feel that blacks should be able to benefit from the fruits of their own labor. According to Dinesh D Souza in her article Abraham Lincoln: Tyrant, Hypocrite, or Consummate Statesman , he was not, however, an abolitionist. Abolitionists wanted an immediate end to slavery and believed the rights of slaves should not be compromised and that they had a duty to defend freedom, unreservedly, and careless of the consequences (3). What was the reason behind the Civil War? According to Carter G. Woodson and Charles H. Wesley, when the Civil War started, Lincoln, in order to stay on the good side of supporters who had voted him into office, publicly stated that he did not want to interfere with the slavery in the South ( The Negro in the Civil War 361). Contrary to claims that he did not approve of slavery, Lincoln clearly compromised the rights of slaves to be free in order to appease supporters of slavery by evading the subject of slavery in the South. D Souza also asserts that Lincoln stated in correspondence to Andrew Stephens, the former vice president of the Confederacy, that while we think it is wrong, and ought to be restricted, it was not his intention to get ... Submission to Local Network Submission to Local Network October 1, 2010 Dear Sir/Madam, As the signatory of the UN Global Compact, Cadbury has implemented many initiatives in its CSR strategy and has done a lot to implement the ten principles. In this report, I am writing on behalf of Cadbury to propose the recommendations for the implementation of the following two in the ten principles of the Global Compact. Principle one requires that business should respect human rights including those in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And businesses are asked to do something to undertake more environmental responsibility under principle eight. Nestle, another big company in our industry, has also assessed the societal interests from different ranges of stakeholders when making their decisions and create shared value across each stage of its value chain. Overall, we believe if these recommendations are put into practice by our Network members, they will be able to perform better in human rights and environment issues and win good reputation for their business and this will bring good economic outcomes in the long term. Also, for the Local Network, when more businesses do better in undertaking their responsibility in these issues, the Principles of the Global Compacts will be implemented better. Of course, there will be some challenges and risks when these recommendations are carried out. The possible challenges may include the unclear responsibility between different departments in the company. For example, our HRET should be carried out in the human resource department and departments with procurement functions. So when put into practice, it did not go smoothly. To solve this problem, we propose someone be appointed to act as a go between in different departments. Also, it should be clear in the corporate policy that the cooperation between these departments is needed to address the human rights and environmental problems. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Contingency Cost For A Maintenance Contract Based On... In this study, a tool was developed to estimate contingency cost for a maintenance contract based on historical records of the CO on the road maintenance activities. In order to develop the tool, the Visual C# and the R program were selected as development platforms. As historical data, 614 road maintenance contracts were received from Kenya Rural Road Authority (KeRRA) in Kenya. These data were used for the validation of the tool developed during this study. The steps that were required to develop the contingency estimation tool is given in Figure 1. For the contingency estimation tool, a database system was designed and all the contracts data were imported to the database. Similarly, the necessary input and output interfaces were prepared. The contingency percentage is estimated based on the input parameters such as work category, road surface type, road condition, accessibility, weather condition, location name, and the total activity cost. At the beginning of the prediction, this tool queries the historical data on CO in the database for the selected activity. Then, this tool prepares an ANN model for the data prediction. The neural network is prepared by the R program and these data are used to train the neural network model. Then, for that activity, the contingency is predicted. This process is repeated for each of activities and the contingency required for the contract is computed based on the cost weightage of the activities. The tool that was developed during ... • 6. The Space Race Essay The years after World War II was a time of great scientific and technological advancements. With these advancements came great tension and rivalry between the United States and the former Union of Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR). The biggest rivalry between the two superpowers was the advancement in space technology. In 1952, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) was established in which scientists stated that in the time between July 1, 1957 and December 31, 1958, solar activity would be at a high point. The IGY made it so that both the US and the USSR became determined to be the first to reach space, and so the space race was born. During the space race, the USSR made many launches that were very advanced and superior to the US.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This launch was extraordinary because it put the first living mammal into space. This satellite was much heavier than Sputnik 1, having two cabins, one for the equipment and controls and another for Laika, the dog. Laika s cabin provided her with oxygen, food, water and allowed the dog enough room to lie down and stand (Siddiqi). It was predicted that Laika would live for ten days, but due to thermal problems inside the satellite she only survived for about two. At the time of Sputnik 2, there was no mention of the US even trying to send any living organism into space because they were still having trouble with regular satellite launches. This launch not only further emphasized the Soviet Union s superiority to the United States, but it also provided scientists with the first data of a living organism in space and foreshadowed the future in human space travel. By the anniversary of Sputnik 1, it seemed like the United States were catching up to the Soviet Union in terms of satellites launched. The US had now launched three Explorers and one Vanguard while the USSR had launched three Sputniks. Although the US had launched more satellite than the USSR, Sputnik 1 weighed more than all four of the US satellites combined and Sputnik 3 weighed and astonishing 2,950 pounds. The three US launches couldn t compare to the Soviet Union s launches because the Sputnik launches were so much more technologically advanced, once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of MLIS Needless to say, the course duration suggested herewith needs a perspicacious discussion by erudite LIS professionals considering all the pros and cons to survive the LIS programme in the present age with full dignity as a discipline. One thing is very clear that total two years course duration for BLIS and MLIS or 2 year integrated MLIS is not enough to fully equip a LIS studentto match with the job responsibilities at present age. The process seems to be rigmarole but it is certainly not that because it only needs to bring the erudite LIS professional to sit in one place to discuss. It was caused by a number of long term causes such as the Treaty of Versailles, strategic political activities and the Great Depression. However, Jews, who made up less than 1% of the German population in 1933, were the primary target of the Nazis racially provoked hatred. They were unfairly blamed for the country s economic depression and defeat in World War One. Following Hitler s appointment as chancellor, laws were passed that declared Jews second class citizens, segregating them from those of German descent and forcing them out of their jobs. The Nazis either seized Jewish businesses or forced them to be sold at exceptionally low prices. Between 1933 and 1935, laws emerged that allowed Romani, Africans, homosexuals and the handicapped to undergo medical procedures to be sterilized so that they were no longer able to produce children. • 11. Taking a Look at Frederick Banting In the year 1891, on the 14th of November Frederick Banting was brought onto this world in a town 60 kilometres north of Toronto called Alliston. He was the last born of five other siblings and lived in a middle class family. Frederick Banting was an average student and had a hard time in completion of high school. He decided to study arts, however he failed. Banting always dreamt of becoming a doctor and in September 1912, the University of Torontos Faculty of Medicine, accepted him as a student (Nobelprize.org the official web site of Nobel Prize). Banting took a strong liking to the disease known as Diabetes. His studies and research, led him to understand that insulinhas control over the metabolism of sugar in the blood (Nobelprize.org the official web site of Nobel Prize). On the night of October, 31, 1920, Banting got an idea from a medical journal. He believes that if you could extract the secretion made by the pancreas, then you can further understand and advance in the treatment of diabetes ((Library and Archives Canada). Banting made the decision of moving to the University of Toronto to reveal and discuss his idea with J.J.R. Macleod. Macleod provided an opportunity for Banting and Charles Best (his assistant), to start the work on May, 17, 1921 (Library and Archives Canada). Good timing and luck were the main factors which led the Torontonian researches to announce their discovery first. This is due to the fact that many scientists in Germany and Hungary would ... The first reason I believe this is that the story was the longest one out of the other ones read in class. After reading this short storyI found that I understood what happen better than other stories I have read in class. The Industrial innovations of the early 1900 s have left their mark on American society. President Woodrow Wilson had always been wary of his neighbors in Central and South America. The Tampico Incident led to the ABC Conference which had a goal of three unbiased nations, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, being the arbiter of the Incident. Society gives us a set of unspoken rules and regulations that must be abided by or else society becomes ones own worst enemy; thus is Eliot s message in his poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. This poem has been given a cynical voice in which Eliot tries to convey his message of modern society and its expectations. He is in a position in which he knows what the flaws in society are but does not have the courage or the ability to convey the message to the rest of the people. He fears what they might say and how they will treat him, will ruin him if he exploits society. Eliot gives evidence of the mockery society exhibits in line 41: They will say: `How his hair is growing thin! (775) He knows that there are certain things... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This establishes the theme and thus the tone of the poem. Towards the end of the poem the reader gains a sense of irony and sarcasm that is expressed within the tone: Till human voices wake us, and we drown (778). Human voices is supposed to represent a helping hand in which any person in trouble can be helped by humanity. However, these human voices only cause the person in need to drown in their words. This is ironic because, as indicated above, humanity is the coexistence of a fellow human with the help (if necessary and available) of another fellow human when he/she is in need of it. However, metaphorically speaking, the person in need in the poem (Alfred) only receives negativity and hostility from society and his fellow men, thus causing him/her to drown in the words of the human voices. This is the most important set back of society conveyed by Eliot in his poem. It is the last line in the poem and is the key to the poem. Also, Eliot uses other text such as that, which is in the lines, But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed, Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter, I am no prophet and here s no great matter (777); as an allusion to indicate his inability to convey his message. He explains that even though he has prayed (perhaps for society) and wept and fasted, he still can not send the true message that has encompassed himself and his soul. ... Rape in Afghanistan is said to be an epidemic, but according to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of the term is a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. Rape in this country is viewed as something that is inevitable and cannot be stopped. Usually, rape also involves domestic violence, hence the reason they re paired together. Contrary to common misconception, men are raped as well as women, especially children of both genders. In the Kite Runner, rape is a topic that is prevalent in and throughout the book. Bacha Bazi is even a part of the Kite Runner. Bacha Bazi is a phrase that is a significant piece of the plot of the Kite Runner. It alludes to the rape of little boys. In the story, the protagonist, Amir, must go to Afghanistan to save his nephew from being a bacha bazi sex slave. With Amir s decision to take action, he internally hopes that it will rid him of the guilt he felt as a child when he saw Hassan, his brother, raped. His guilt manifests over time because he did not support him by standing up for him. As part of the practice, rich people who buy the boys as slaves sometimes them dress up in female clothing. Sometimes they re forced to wear fake breasts. Prepubescent teens and even young children, specifically the boys, are seen as a socially acceptable substitute for girls in this society. Information Processing Techniques Office At D.a Introduction From its inception in the early 60 s the Internet was used to send information, this was pioneered by the computer scientist J.C.R. He conceived the idea of a network of interconnected computers which would allow data and other information to be shared no matter the location. This led him to be appointed head of the Information Processing Techniques Office at D.A.R.P.A. (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) then called A.R.P.A. While there he convinced his successors and fellow M.I.T. researcher Lawrence G Roberts that his work was important and that it should continue. In 1964 Roberts and another M.I.T. Alumni Leonard Kleinrock devised a system of communications using packets rather than circuits (this was the first step to actual computer networking). In 1965 while working alongside Thomas Merrill, Roberts manged to connect his computer in Massachusetts to another in California, thus creating the world s first W.A.N. (Wide Area Network). By 1966 Roberts went to D.A.R.P.A. and quickly set about devising the ARPANET with Licklider. This was greenlighted and by the early 1970 s technology had caught up with the dreams of it s visionaries. At the same time, it can also be a weapon used to hurt another individual. When these type of rumors are discovered all over the internet, most people may believe it to be false. Some examples come from the New York Times that includes things like the Boston Marathon bombings and the conspiracy theory that the Obama administration manipulated unemployment statistics. ( Nyhan, 2014) However, if the rumor has indisputable facts, then it will be believable enough to make it true. Anyway, the point is that rumors are very dangerous and can inflict physical, mental, and psychological pain to people. People may spread rumors to gain power, seek revenge, improve their self image, gain attention, or other types of reasons. Whatever the reason, rumors can happen to anybody ranging from young adolescent teens to adults in the workforce. Here are some of the causes created by the spreading of rumors that ultimately destroys the lives of people living in society. One cause of spreading rumors over the internet is that people will lose their trust in someone. Teens seem to gossip a lot about almost anything. They may usually do this because of wanting attention from people or because of hostility towards someone. Another reason may because they re simply bored. • 22. Gender Roles Since High School Essay Gender roles resurfaced as a pivotal factor in my life during my late adolescence. In our culture different sports are considered to be male and female dominated respectively. Unfortunately little is done to challenge or resist these societal norms and I experienced this first hand during my senior year of high school. Volleyball, which is considered to be a sport primarily for girls and women, was not offered to boys at my high school. Subsequently, I was forced to petition for approval towards the creation of a male volleyball which ultimately went unsuccessful due to time constraints and unwillingness to help from staff and administration. While this example pertained to male exclusion countless female friends of mine struggled to participate in male dominated sports throughout high school including wrestling and lacrosse. Part of what schools are supposed to be doing under Title IX, and often are not doing, is regularly assessing girls interest, looking to see what sports girls are playing and asking girls what they want to play that is currently not being offered (Wallace). In this instance my districts athletic director directly impacted the sporting experiences for the entire student body by failing to adhere to sufficient standards with respect to gender norms. High school sports presented a unique culture with respect to sport. Trends throughout my high school strongly reinforced dominant ideologies throughout society. The friar is wanton and merry, but this pleasant sounding description is actually packed with mockery. By the 14th century, friars, who were supposed to give up all worldly things and live only by begging for food and alms, were almost totally corrupt. They were known for flattering the rich and deceiving the poor, and especially for seducing women in outright disregard for their vow of celibacy. For a typical normal distribution, a mesokurtic (which means to have a moderate peak and tails for a graph), definition is one that has a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1. While this is the case, there might be other normal distributions with means that are not 0 and a standard deviationthat is not 1, for these cases, we use their means and standard deviation. For example, if a normal distributionhad a mean of 2 and a standard deviation of 3, then in order to clarify that it is indeed a normal distribution, we write N( 2,3). Among the normal distributions, we have a standard normal, exponential, uniform and beta. These are varieties of distributions we can get within a normal distribution based on factors like number of cases for example and where the cases were drawn from. At times when it gets complicated to distinguish between the standard deviation of a variable and that of a sampling distribution, there is a solution. The standard deviation for a sampling distribution is called a standard error and this literally means that if a sampling distribution is normal, then 68% of its samples will lie within one standard error of the mean and 98% within 1.98 standard error of the mean. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are also a number of downsides to the area because of economic impacts that the travel and tourism industry bring that mostly affects the locals of the area. First is the increase in living costs. As more and more tourists come to the area, tourism related facilities increase the prices of their goods knowing that most tourists can afford their prices. A good example of this negative impact is taxi drivers charging tourists more than the usual. Second is leakage. Leakage is defined as the amount of money for supplies and services paid for outside an area or in simple terms, money that does not benefit the economy of the area. The economic benefits of the area can be lost if the goods and services are imported rather than for the local goods and services to be used. Leakage can be avoided by sourcing local materials, using local products, allowing local people to sell in resorts and hotels and employing more local people. Third impact is the decline of traditional employment. As the tourism industry grows there is a bigger demand for people to be employed in it. More and more people are attracted to this industry for it provides a more attractive option rather than the harder, lower paid traditional jobs. This then results to the traditional industries suffering for the younger generation no longer want to learn the skills of the old jobs like weaving and thatchery resulting that ... The Future of Black English and its Academic Impact on African American Children Introduction Language plays a key role in communication in any society, culture and organization. This medium of social interaction is universal and has been passed down for centuries as a legacy. Therefore, it is imperative that the purity of the language is kept within each framework of heritage. Culture also plays a very important role in the evolution of language. In America during the early days of the country, the death penalty was a more viable solution than it appears today due to the quality of the prisons, which couldn t sustain prisoners long term. (Von Drehle, 2015). Today, this is not an issue with prisons that are provided both by the state and federal governments and that are fully capable of holding offenders throughout the length of a life sentence (Von Drehle, 2015). However, many will argue that capital punishmentshould be eliminated. Foes of the death penalty are split into two groups with one that argues that capital punishment should and will cease based upon public support, that it doesn t deter crime, and the current processes of executions are too costly and problematic. The other will take a more humanitarian approach and claim that it is not the role of the government to decide the fate of an individual, and that crimes punishable by death are not justifiable.
