The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Hueshi
Hanif Kueishi s Buddha of Suburbia depicts a young man called Karim Amir and his search for
identity in 1970s London. As the plot progresses, it becomes apparent that Karim does not fall
into a distinct category, defined by sexuality, class, or race. He is a young mixed race man with
fluid sexuality. He is a funny kind of Englishman a product of two old histories (Kureishi 3). He
is placed in the position of a hybrid because of his cultural background, and by the endless racist
encounters that occur in his life. He is not a traditional protagonist who fully belongs to one social
group or identity. The narrative ultimately brings Karim to a realization that it is impossible for him
to find a place in the society. Karim s character dismantles the normativemovement of adolescence
into a societally accepted adulthood, and the societal expectations that discriminate against him
because he is almost English. By residing in a queer space and time in the Buddha of Suburbia,
Karim not only subverts the conventional construction of adulthood, but also withstands the
hegemonies of race that affect him as a half Indian living in London. Often placed as the Other,
Karim rejects both extremes. He rejects England s racialized view of him, and normative ideas of
home, and family. He acknowledges his odd mixture of continents and blood, of here and there, of
belonging or not and sets out to look for trouble, which would distract him from his gloomy, slow
and heavy family life (3).

president. Polls can give us a general idea of the Nation s preference in terms of who will be
selected as the next president. This article uses the Bloomberg National Poll which showed
Obama having a thirteen point lead over Romney while the Associated Press Poll resulted in
Obama having a three point lead while the Pew Research Center had the president up by four
points. These polls ranged from a three point to a thirteen point lead which means that different
sampling will yield different results. Location, demographic, and whether the state is democratic
or republican plays an important part in the results you will get from the polls. According to the
article, small differences in methods between popular polls can result in large differences when
voter commitment is still uncertain (Tackett, 2012). During this election, polls were a great source
of information for voters to use in their decision making process. Bloomberg s poll surveyed 1,002
adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for the full sample. This means
that if the polls were conducted 100 times, the data would be within 3 points above or below the
reported percentage in 95 of 100 surveys (Tackett, 2012). The confidence interval is used as a type
of interval estimate of a sample population to indicate the reliability of the

Total Knee Replacement
Managing Mobility After a Total Knee Replacement
November 15, 2011
INTRODUCTION In Kindred Rehabilitation, the patient had a total knee replacement due to
osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes degenerative changes, within the joints causing bone stiffening
and reactive inflammation. My patient was admitted on 10/21/11 with osteoarthritis and a left total
knee replacement. Her PT and INR were a concern because she had developed mild
thrombocytopenia which resulted in the elevation and potential bleeding. The physician had to take
her off of Lovenox and switch her to an oral anti coagulant Xarelto at 10mg once daily. During her
care I was educated by the interdisciplinary teams managing mobility, safety, and the more... Show

The agenda was quite clear that during their observations the recovery showed needs were
decreased according to age and BMI. They stated older patients were in need of more assistance
and longer stay in the hospital as opposed to younger adults. I found it interesting that they saw
patients with bilateral knees had decreased needs and that unilateral were in need of more
assistance before discharge. Managing pain was their first priority during research and
rehabilitation, followed by instructing care of their own surgical wound. The aim of this study
was to actively reinforce assessment and management after this procedure and giving guidance to
those in health care. According to Su et all (2009), knee replacement is an effective way to find
relief of pain and improve mobility, but most importantly giving the patient education and skills
during early recovery. In comparison, all articles focused on the need of improving mobility after
surgery. Assessing the patient s abilities and the need for physical therapyand keeping an eye out
for complications. A main focus was pain relief and that recovery for each patient varies, but it is
important to get them ambulating with assistive devices soon after surgery. My patient at Kindred,
had continuous assessment and an interdisciplinary team that assisted in her road to

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies for Posttraumatic Stress...
Cognitive Behavioral Therapies for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Posttraumatic stress disorder
(PTSD) is classified as an anxiety disorder that can develop after an individual has observed and/or
experienced an extreme traumatic event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury to
one s self or another (APA, 2000). An extreme traumatic event can include, but is not limited to,
military combat, terrorist attacks, natural or manmade disasters, sexual assault, physical assault,
robbery, and torture (APA, 2000). The type of traumatic event could influence the way in which
medical and mental health care professionals assess, conceptualize, and subsequently treat the
individuals with a PTSD diagnosis. For this reason, sexual... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The purpose of psychoeducation is to legitimize the traumatic reaction, to help the client develop a
formulation of her or his symptoms, and to establish a justification for treatment (Harvey, Bryant,
Tarrier, 2003). Prolonged Exposure and/or In Vivo Exposure Prolonged exposure requires that the
client repeatedly, in a systematic manner, relive the memories of the traumatic event over an
extended period of time (Foa, Dancu, Hembree, Jaycox, Meadows, Street, 1999; Foa Rauch, 2004;
Harvey, Bryant, Tarrier, 2003). In prolonged exposure, the client is expected to (a) vividly call to
mind the traumatic event, with as much detail as possible, (b) recount the memory of the traumatic
event to the therapist in the present tense, and (c) have constant exposure to the memory until the
distress decreases (McDonagh, McHugo, Sengupta, Demment, Schnurr, Friendman, Ford, Mueser,
Fournier, Descamps, 2005). The therapist s role, in prolonged exposure, is to help the client
identify hot spots or the most distressing aspect of the memory. The therapist and the client then
develop a hierarchy of memories to address, from least to most distressing. These memories are
addressed one at a time until habituation of anxiety to the memory occurs, which is determined by

Indiana The Hoosier Research Paper
Indiana the Hoosiers
When people think of Indiana most just think about corn and that is true. Indiana is a state that
is all about farming and festivals and the social interaction of the people. When people are out in
Indiana one simply smiles and says hello even if they do not normally know one another. This is
just a normal occurrence in most parts of Indiana. If people go to another state, things may be
much different. People in other states may not hold doors open for one another and it is not
considered rude. Whereas in Indiana, if there is someone walking 30 feet behind, better hold that
door open for them or that is considered highly rude. Just like any large group of people living

36 hours, the Deepwater Horizon sank on the morning of 22 April 2010. As a result, the drilling

A Puerto Rican Childhood Analysis
Cautionary old wive s tales have long been an effective way to teach children morality and
values without boring them. In Judith Ortiz Cofer s A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican
Childhood (rpt. In Santi V. Buscemi and Charlotte Smith, 75 Readings Plus, 10th ed. [New York:
McGraw Hill, 2013] 67 71) it is clear how a good storyteller such as Mama can capture the
attention her audience. Cofer s grandmother often tells these cuentos to her daughters and
granddaughters over afternoon coffee. These stories are used as an indirect way for Mama to teach
her familythe values and lessons that she has learned throughout her life. With her family
members, Mama s presence demands a universal respect. Everyone in the room listens to what
Mama has to say, even if it s not what they want to hear. Mama is the absolute leader among the
women her family and her opinions are held in high regard. Cofer acknowledges this saying that
even her own motherdid not possess Mama s matriarchal power to command and keep everyone s
attention (68). All of the stories that Mama tells are individual experiences or things that she has

She hopes to pass on the wisdom that that she has gained to the women of her family. Each story
has a moral that Mama hopes to instill in her family. Often Mama would direct her tales at one

of Maria La Loca was told for the sake of her Aunt Laura who was engaged at young age: I
noticed how young Aunt Laura lowered her eyes, refusing to meet Mama s meaningful gaze (68).
Mama is obviously concerned for her daughter and doesn t want to see her make the same mistakes
as Maria La Loca. Although this upsets Laura, she still holds her mother in high regard and listens

Essay Summary of Thoreau
Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by
outlining his project: a two year and two month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden
Pond. He does this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He
easily supplies the four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously
records his expenditures and earnings, demonstrating his understanding of economy, as he builds
his house and buys and grows food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25.
Complementary Verses: This chapter consists entirely of a poem, The Pretensions of Poverty, by
seventeenth century English poet Thomas Carew. The poem criticizes those who... Show more

To him, the railroad symbolizes the destruction of the good old pastoral way of life. Following is
a description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling
and rumbling, cows lowing, whip poor wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and
cockerels crowing. Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary
and close to nature. He loves to be alone, for I never found the companion that was so
companionable as solitude, and he is never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes
there is no great value to be had by rubbing shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors:
Thoreau writes about the visitors to his cabin. Among the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian
woodchopper, whom Thoreau idealizes as approaching the ideal man, and a runaway slave,
whom Thoreau helps on his journey to freedom in Canada. The Bean Field: Thoreau relates his
efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of beans. He plants in June and spends his summer
mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells most of the crop, and his small profit of $8.71
covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the small town of Concord every day or two to hear
the news, which he finds as refreshing in its way as the rustle of the leaves. Nevertheless, he
fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to a gopher colony. In late summer, he is
arrested for refusing to pay

Vertigo Themes
Film Analysis 1: The Power of Vertigo I remember watching Vertigo for the first time back when
I was still very young, but at the time, I didn t really understand anything about the movie. As I
watched it again as I grew older, I learned to appreciate how great this movie really is and the
special narrativestyle that the movie presented. Vertigo, to me, was always known as Alfred
Hitchcocks best film.
Most of Hitchcock s well known films like Psycho or North by Northwest have unique title
sequences that were an important part of their respective themes and narratives. For Vertigo s title
sequence, it starts with an extreme close up of a woman s lips, which suggests the foreshadowing
of Judy s role in the movie. The intro then shifts to the person s eyes, while the eyes, referencing
the idea of looking and watching like what Scottie will do for the most part of the movie. Visual
motifs were presented during this sequence such as the spinning spiral patters. These were motifs
that are carried through into the narrative.
The film is about John Scottie Ferguson, a detective who suffers from acrophobia, which is
probably the reason for the title Vertigo . He has guilt complex over what happened in the
beginning of the movie when the police officer fell off and died. When he accepts to watch over
his friend s suicidal wife for his final job, he madly falls in love with her . Later on in the movie,
Scottie tries to save Madeleine from falling off a steeple, but was

about the same thing, but some of the characteristics and the themes are different. What are some of

many differences between the books and the film. In the book Percy Jackson: The lightning
thief, Percy Jackson and Annabelle are supposed to be 12 years old. Annabelle has curly blonde
hair and grey eyes. In the movie, Annabelle and Percy are 16 year old. I know this because on
the website : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qCJ1bzD_dQ, Percy meets Annabelle for the
first time, she has a totally different appearance in that part of the movie, then in the book.
Annabelle also ends up with straight brown hair and blue eyes. Another thing is that in the book
Percy does not own any type of electronic device, because they attract monsters. In the book,he
uses a glass ball to defeat Medusa. In the movie, Percy has an iPod tough. Medusa was seen
through the reflection of his iPod touch. In conclusion, The book and and the movie of Percy
Jackson: The lightning thief, have many similarities and differences. The book is more
descriptive, you can picture what is happening in your mind. In the movie, it is more realistic.
You don t have to guess what s happening, you can see it visually. The two are very interesting in
their own ways. They talk about boy named Percy Jackson who finds out that he is the son of the

Comparing Frankenstein, Aylmer, and Dr. Phillips Essay...
Comparing Frankenstein, Aylmer, and Dr. Phillips
Authors Mary Shelly, Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Steinbeck have all created scientists in at
least one piece of their work. Mary Shelly s character Frankenstein, from her novel Frankenstein, is
a man who is trying to create life from death. Aylmer, the main character in Nathaniel Hawthornes
short story The Birthmark, is a scientist who is trying to rid his wife of a birthmark on her almost
perfect complexion. In John Steinbeck s The Snake the main character Dr. Phillips is attempting to
mate starfish until a woman interrupts his work to buy a snake. While written in different times by
very different authors who have varying knowledge in science, the three characters ... Show more

Both scientists seem crazy and have a God Complex. Frankenstein states, A new species would
bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to
me (pg 155). They both attempt to undo God s work. Aylmer and Frankenstein worked
relentlessly on their experiments, completely disregarded the outside world and allowing no
one in while they worked. To Aylmer, his experiment was everything to him, it meant more to
him than his wife and therefore he had the ability to control her for the sake of his experiment.
Frankenstein spent his whole life trying to run away from his experiment, it controlled him.
Neither of them had any forethought and because of that, their subjects suffered. Aylmer and
Frankenstein exhibit similar qualities and at the same time show how very different they are.
John Steinbeck s character Dr. Phillips is a very different from the other two scientists but he
still shares some similar qualities. Like Frankenstein, Dr. Phillips shows how careless he is with
his work by missing a series of tests with mating starfish because he was busy watching the
woman watch her snake eat a rat in his laboratory. There was a woman in Dr. Phillips life too,
just like in Aylmer s. But in Dr. Phillips s case the woman controlled him and she was more
important to him than his experiment. He thought she was repulsive at first, but once she leaves for
good, he wants her back, which is a

Holocaust Concentration Camps The Holocaust nearly made the Jewish population and religion
disappear from the face of the Earth. From January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945; Adolf Hitler,
German politician and leader of the Nazi party, ran the Holocaust all over Germany and Eastern
Europe. Prisoners and victims of the Holocaust include: the majority of the Jewish population,
German Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats, Roma (Gypsies), Jehovah s Witnesses,
homosexuals, and people accused of socially deviant or socially unacceptable behavior. They
were sent to many different areas that had different purposes. The most used places they were
sent to are called concentration camps. Once they entered the concentration camps, there was no
escaping; those people officially became prisoners. There were 23 main concentration camps and
around 900 sub camps. Concentration camps tricked the Jewish people into coming into them by
offering them a better life on the welcoming signs outside. Some of the main camps had many
different inhumane uses. All of the camps are notorious for their cruel and evil ways of
everything that they did to prisoners, such as the genocide the Holocaust caused (Concentration
Camps, Killing Methods, Jewish Population). A lesser known camp, Westerbork, is located in the
Netherlands. This concentration camp was known as a Transit camp, which meant it wasn t the
end of the line for the prisoners who arrived there. These camps were a temporary accommodation
for the groups of prisoners that were being shipped throughout the country. Often these camps are
where families were split up by German Nazi soldiers. Westerbork was used from October 1939
through April 1945. This camp was shut down by Canadian liberation. Westerbork still stands as a
monument today (Concentration Camps). The next concentration camp, Dachau, is located in
Germany. This camp was the longest running major concentration camp throughout the Holocaust.
It started being used in March 1933 and was not shut down until April 1945. This was a forced
labor camp, so the majority of people survived when at this camp, but you didn t always get to stay
there unless you worked as hard as

Analysis Of The Poem Rip Van Winkle
Washington Irving was credited with introducing the short story as a new genre in American
literature, as William Hedges observes, yet I find it surprising that this story could have been taught
as utterly original. As Emerson and the Transcendentalists were able to synthesize the mystical
aspects of Puritan thought with the rational and secular facets of Enlightenment thinking, so Irving
weaves a new tapestry out of many existing threads of American experience. Rip Van Winkle
is a
mature version of Franklin s short fictional sketches, such as The Speech of Polly Baker, and if
one were to read isolated passages from Irving and Franklin aloud, it could be difficult to identify
the source, as both develop a muted sarcasm and rely heavily... Show more content on

The mythical elements of the narrative are most obvious when Gothic elements begin to creep in.
As Rip hears his name echoing in the woods, but can see nothing but a crow winging its solitary
flight across the mountain, Irving tugs gently on the thread of the Salem trials, suggesting that the
supernatural is afoot in the woods. The crow sighting is not incidental here, either, as Crow or
Raven would signal the onset of a trickster narrative in oral literature. Irving nudges readers
toward the mythical reading, in part, by endearing them to Rip, who could hardly be accused of
witchcraft. The choice, in other words, that Irving forces readers to confront is whether to make
fools of themselves by trying to explain the entire episode as factual history (thus perpetuating the
Salem nonsense) or sink into the metaphorical complexities of the story. And, like a good myth,
the story doesn t really leave much choice in the end, but casts its own spell that carries the reader
where it will.
From the postscript, readers know that the narrative is a synthesis of German folklore and Indian
legends. Irving explicitly demonstrates knowledge of the Trickster figure by citing the Manitou or
Spirit...who kept about the wildest recesses of the Catskill Mountains, and took a

Another writer who impacts Heinlein s novel is John W. Campbell Jr. due to the similarities
between Campbell s main policy of how technology affects the social economy and Heinlein s
setting of the novel surrounding a society where the discovery of Martians is possible and

explains that because Heinlein s novel presents so many varied ideas, readers may react and

government. In all, this source is not beneficial for the research essay because all of the ideas the

Applying Criminological Theory to Solve the Murder of...
Applying criminological theory to a suspect s anecdotal evidence can help to distinguish which
suspect could be the possible offender. In this certain case, poor Tigger has been murdered and
there are 3 possible suspects. Merton s Anomie Theory will be applied to suspect number 1:
Winnie The Pooh. Eysenck s Theory will be applied to suspect number 2: Piglet and Social Bond
Theory will be applied to suspect number 3: Eeyore. Merton s Anomie theory works around the
theory that a society or culture inadvertently bring out offending behavior through pressure between
the social norms and the compulsion to achieve them (Thio, 1975). There are 5 aspects of social
structure that associate with this theory (Merton, 1938). Conformity,... Show more content on

Psychoticism relates to certain personality traits such as being impulsive, hostile and aggressive
(Eysenck, 1992). This theory is relatively consistent with the anecdotal evidence about Piglet,
but has more evidence that suggests that Piglet was not the murderer. The anecdotal evidence
states that Piglet has a Generalized Anxiety disorder which ties in with Neuroticism (Cattell and
Scheier 1961). Eysenck and Gudjonsson (1989) had found offenders tend to score high on both
Psychoticism and Neuroticism, (Lykken, 1990) which Piglet does not. He is often described as
a generous animal, which does not tie in with the aggressive, non empathetic, and anti social
nature of Psychoticism (Woody and Claridge 1977). Hirschi s Social Bond Theory is a theory
that instead of being based on why people in society commit offences, it is based on why people
in society do not commit offences (Hirschi, 2002). Hirschi (2002) identifies 4 main social bonds
that can be used to determine the individual s likelihood to become involved in deviant crimes.
These 4 social bonds are attachment, commitment, involvement and belief (Roland 1971).
Altogether these social bonds are what make up the average mindset and behavior of a non
criminal (Gundy Yoder, 2007). So if a person was not to have a strong presence of these bonds, it
would then indicate deviant or offending behavior, and this is the case of Eeyore. The first of these

Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee Essay
The way that people understand their circumstances and surroundings is often directly correlated to
the way they perceive the world around them. An adult understands much more around him than a
child does because of the mature, more knowledgeable perception he has. Meanwhile, the child,
while not able to fully understand what she sees, often sees more than an adult because of the
knowledge hungry, curious perceptionshe has. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the characters
range in gender, age, and intelligence. The narrator herself is a young elementary age child. She
is extremely smart for her age, but because of her limited exposure to the world, does not fully
understand the seriousness and danger of the story unfolding around her. While the book To Kill a
Mockingbird covers many controversial topics, perception and the change certain characters
undergo that effects this perception are the key to connecting many of them. One of the main
characters in Too Kill a Mockingbird is Jem. He is Scout s older brother. As the story is told, he
ages, transitioning from a young boy into a teenager. His perception of the world around him
changes vastly as he ages, leaving curiosity behind for a better understanding. At the beginning of
the story, the reader is introduced to the unseen character of Boo Radley. According to the adults
around town, he is a recluse who never leaves his home. However, Jem, Scout, and their friend Dill
see him in a different light. Jem

Fashion And The World Of Fashion
The world of fashion is always changing and new trends are always emerging. The ways by which
trends and fashion news are communicated to the public has evolved as technology advances.
Before television and the internet, it was difficult for designers, photographers, and fashion brands
alike to spread word about the latest in fashionto a large mass of people. With the help of modern
technology, fashion has made its mark in the world by appearing on televisionnetworks, online
blogs, social media, and digital magazines. In the past, fashion was viewed as something to
which only privileged people could have access. It was hard to keep up with trends because it
was not mass communicated in the same way that it is today. Fashion shows were the best way to
see the newest styles and collections from high end designers. However, it is difficult do attend
these shows because the tickets go to celebrities, socialites, and other prominent people in the
fashion world. Harvard professor, Jeannie Suk, notes that the growing ease of travel and
communication has made the dissemination of fashion much easier (Harvard Magazine). Another
way fashion was accessible was through magazines. The most common way people stayed caught
up with fashion was through magazines because they were affordable and up to date. Suk also
employs that the mass production of newspapers and other forms of publication has helped fashion
trends spread rapidly (Harvard Magazine). Nowadays, technology is

Tenets Of Democracy In Zapatista
Democratic Theory In 1993 The Revolutionary Woman s Law was adopted into the Zapatistas
movement, this law challenged the norms and traditions of a patriarchy society (Basu 2010, 323).
The women collectively wrote the law based on their shared experiences. The women s request
were that they had the right to choose who to marry, when to marry, whether they would have
children, and how many, and how they would participate in society. This new law legitimized
women as equals with men. Rosalva Castillo states that, The emergence of an indigenous women s
movement with genderdemands is also the result of the Zapatista movement (Basu 2010, 322). This
was the beginning of a new democratic emergence political identity for women. What is
democracy? Political scientists argue that there are three major tenets of a democratic government:
popular sovereignty, equality, and liberty. Popular Sovereignty uses direct democracy; power of the

Analysis Of The Movie Silver Linings Playbook
A life interchanging from high to low, happy to sad, to the brink of exploding with euphoria to
the lowest low, is the life of a human living with Bipolar disorder. This roller coaster of emotions
is inevitable and almost unlikely to cure in terms of later onset. Living with any personality
disorder puts strain and hardship on your loved ones and is more then anyone would want to
deal with in their short lifetime. These disorders are more common than we know and the way
they are treated will determine the individual s psychological outcome. The movie Silver
Linings Playbook does a great job depicting a character with Bipolar disorder and the struggles
the main character Pat faces on a day to day basis through his road to recovery. Silver Linings
Playbook displays many types of psychological disorders that include Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, Bipolar disorder, and a slight sexual disorder. Bradley Cooper does an exceptional job
playing the role of Pat Solitano, a bipolar patient who has just been released from a psychiatric
ward after almost killing another man for sleeping with his wife. He plans to relive his past and
thinks that nothing has changed since he has been gone, a common occurrence of a subject with
bipolar disorder. On his journey he is set up with the character Tiffany, played by Jennifer
Lawrence. She is a recently widowed woman that uses sex as a way of coping with her loss. These
two characters connect throughout the movie and develop a relationship

Lost Colony Of Roanoke Essay
The Lost Colony of Roanoke
Queen Elizabeth I desired to establish a permanent English settlement in America, known then as
the New World. In the summer of 1587 a group of nearly 120 men and women from England
arrived on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks, off
the coast of what is now known as North Carolina. This group of settlers set sail from England with
the mission of making the Queen s wishes a reality.
John White was appointed Governor of the colony by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sometime later,
Governor White set sail for England to gather supplies for the colony. Before he had left for
England, White and the colonists had discussed leaving the settlement and founding the city of
Raleigh on the mainland, so the fact that the colonists were no longer in the settlement would not
have been surprising to White. The colonists also worked out signals to communicate with those
who were coming to their assistance. For example, if they left due to an attack, they were
supposed to carve a Maltese cross over their doorposts to signal that they were in distress.
Alternatively, if they left to try to find a more suitable place, they were supposed to carve the
names of the areas they would be traveling through so that White would be able to find them upon

The Beach Literary Analysis Paper
The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a paradise as their
final destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This
can be seen in Alex Garland s The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard,
Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise,
within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopialike society taking a turn for the
worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected.
Throughout the story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through
symbolism such as the cancer of traveling and the destruction that it brings. I... Show more content

Along the way, Richard left behind instructions on how to get to the island for Americans that they
met along the way. Mainly because it is in a secure area, it can be inferred that something bad will
eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The
spread of this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his
friends, who later shares it with other travelers. By the time they arrive on the island, Richard,
Etienne, and Francois discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that
cultivate marijuana which can also foreshadows negative events to happen.
For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states You
fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone s so friendly. It s such simple stuff, but... If I could
stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I d restart it like this. For everyone.
(Beach 106.) However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of
unfortunate events began to occur. A shark attack took place causing the severe injury in one
member and the death of another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the
man who was injured was later killed. Afterwards, a majority of the travelers in the community ate
raw food which led to more than half of them to undergo a serious illness. With the whole

Romanov Family Book Report
The Romanov Family
The book The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion and the Fall of Imperial Russia by Candace
Fleming is an eye opening biography about one of Russia s most famous families. Since 1613, the
Romanov family had ruled Russia, and were the last imperial dynasty to ever take the throne. Tsar
Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra had five children, consisting of only one eligible heir to Russia. The
author s purpose of writing this book was to explain the downfall of one Russia s most important
families. Candace Fleming wrote the book to give insight and share her knowledge on how the
Romanov family witnessed and committed horrible acts of violence and stupidity which
ultimately lead to their murders. On May 26, 1896, Nicholas Romanov was crowned Tsar of
Russia after his father, Alexander III, passed away. The day of his... Show more content on

Law and another being his cousin, decided to bring Rasputin s rule to an end. They start their by
plan by luring the Rasputin to one of their palaces. Beginning the official murder plot, the men
supposedly started poisoning the Starets food with cyanide. However, it seemed that this had
no effect on the Starets at all. Later in the night, Rasputin was shot in the back and presumed
dead. Leaving the dead Rasputin in a cellar, the men head upstairs to figure out where to bury
the body. Shortly after, Rasputin clearly alive, escapes and attacks one of the murderers. He
makes it halfway across the courtyard when he is shot two more times, one in the shoulder and
one in the head. After three fatal gunshots, the Starets is rolled up in a bag and tossed into a river
covered in ice. Three days later, his body was found, and it showed clear signs of struggle after
being wrapped up. This was a shocking part of history to read about because he murder was
panned out by Nicholas own kin. Also, it is very odd how the Starets didn t die after three fatal

Theological Reflection Essay
Many weeks have passed since I last wrote about my theological perspective at length. I began
the class with lots of questions, and I do not believe I can say for sure that they have been
answered, but I can say that I am now at peace with the idea that some of my questions may not
be able to be answered in this life. It amazes me that I have been able to grow so much in such a
short period of time. The growing pains were great, but the reward was greater. I feel that I am in
a much better place in my life now. In the past few months, I have tried to reclaim some of the
closeness to God that I feel I have been missing. It has not been easy for me to give up control of
my life. I have strong tendencies to be in control of what goes on, so that I have some
inclination of how to prepare to react. As a result of learning to let go, I feel much less fearful of
the future or my place in it. Not only has this class helped me come to terms with the idea that I
should not have total control over my life, but it has also reminded me of things I had forgotten
about. It truly left me pleasantly surprised with the content of the class. I cannot lie, much of the
curriculum contained information that I already had some knowledge of, but that is only a result of
my obsessive research in the pursuit of answers. However, something that I appreciated greatly was
the inclusion of the Apocrypha. Further, I appreciated that verses from Apocryphal books were
used in the same way that Canonical verses were used. This was one of the biggest problems I
had with the way Christianity has always been taught to me. Many exclude the Apocrypha as if
it does not even exist, much less as an original piece of the non canonical Bible. This fact,
colloquially stated, has always seemed sketchy to me. I was not even aware of its existence until
about a year ago. My foundations were shaken a little when I found out. I compare it to finding
out about a long held family secret. I could not find anything in what I read of the Apocrypha to be
too out there, so I did not understand why it was never mentioned in the first place. It seemed to me
that if they were so set on not mentioning it, there could be a whole array of other texts/writings that

The Government s Methods Of Intervention
The government s methods of intervention are to enhanced public/private collaboration, proposing
new cybersecurity legislations, established partnerships to secure technology, data information
sharing, protected consumers, and increase security on Federal networks (Fact Sheet). By detecting
common cyber dangers and obtain additional resources from the private sector assets can reduce the
risk of threats against our country. President Obama and his Administration has addressed the major
risk of cybersecurity facing our nation today. The government has executed an extensive variety of
regulations to improve upon cybersecurity, residential and globally, to enhance cyber defense
mechanisms and prevention measures. On February 13th, 2015, the White House held a
Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection Summit, and the President issued an Executive Order to
encourage the development of Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAOs) to serve as
the hubs for sharing critical cybersecurity information and promoting collaboration for analyzing
this information both within and across industry sectors (Fact Sheet). To boost cybersecurity for the
public good, file sharing policies and regulations should be implemented regarding data sharing
developed to uncover data about the dangers and vulnerabilities in its framework. By overseeing
file sharing regulations and additional regulations or policies, the government can improve
technology innovations to enhance cybersecurity. For

High School Reflection Essay
Have you ever just felt like high school was too easy? Well I have because I felt like the teachers
just passed you on. They didn t give me a challenge like I was supposed to have and from that
being, now I have to prepare myself for the college life and teach myself the things I was supposed
to be taught in high school. The schoolI came from didn t have a math teacher or a history teacher
all year so we just sat in the class rooms and played everyday all day and I still ended up passing
and that school was Albany Early College. They told me that I would finish high school with an
associate degree but all I got was a discombobulated school and an uncontrolled school. The next
school I went to didn t care either. They showed me that I can skip class everyday and still pass
with an A average. Despite all the things I didn t get taught in high school, I did learn some unique
aspects that I can reflect on and use for college. The skills I reflect on are annotating, using the
Cornell note taking system, and how to be on time for school.
To begin with, the first aspect I reflect on from high school is annotating. Annotating helped me a
lot when I was taking final exams and other test. This is one of the most I reflect on because I
can use this skill to help me in college. I first learned how to annotate in the 11th grade when I
was at Monroe Comprehensive High School. The way my teacher showed me how to annotate
was to number the paragraphs then summarize the paragraphs individually, after doing that it
helped me understand the passage better as if it was hard to comprehend. My teacher also told
me to underline any sentences that look interesting to me and circle any words that I am not
familiar with and go and look them up after I was done. But you don t just annotate and be done,
but you have to go back and study what you annotated so you can get a full understanding of
whatever you re annotating. Annotating is a big skill that I was taught because I can use it in
other subjects other than English such as: History, Science, and other classes, but I can t annotate
the same way in every subject. For example: If I annotate math the same way I do in History then
my notes would be messed up because I am learning two

Anonymous Monkey Ninja Essay
Brief and Possibly Unnecessary Author s Note:
I was having some trouble coming up with new ideas last week for my free write, so I decided
to write a scene from my book that I hadn t yet, and incorporate one of the themes into that.
However, I was unaware that I would actually have to finish the story, and It had to be 500 words
or less. Considering the climax and conclusion of my book were probably several thousand words
away from the free write segment, I decided I ought to tell a different story.
So here it is. Enjoy!

Can I get a second witness to the monkey ninja?
Dude, calm down. maybe you left them in your car. someone suggested.
He knew they weren t there, but he checked anyway. He was pretty desperate now.
If his desk was a dangerous forest, then surely his car was the site of a nuclear detonation. He
remembered then that he had meant to clean it before the date.
Nathan threw all his rage into organizing. He might as well do it now, since the keys were
nowhere in sight. He collected wads of paper and wrappers from the floor and unearthed ancient
artifacts from beneath the seats. He even took time to straighten the glove box.
When he stood back and looked at his work, he couldn t help but feel a little proud. At least, his
mother would be proud, he thought.
He was proud, that is, until the memory of his original task came back to smack him in the face.
He dashed back into the office, his mind blank of all places they could be.
I still can t find them!
You spent a while out there, man. I thought you might have.
No,
He thought he d take one last glance at his office. He was running out of time.
But as soon as he entered the cubicle, his eyes latched on to the very object he was looking for. The
way the bright metal reflected the buzzing fluorescent lights, at that moment, was beautiful indeed.
Found em! he shouted in triumph, holding the jingling key ring high above his head. The soothing
sounds those keys made was the finest of music.

the Los Angeles political establishments for his forceful approach. In response to a drive by

Operation Hammer, a military style plan to catch suspected criminals and shut down crack houses
through the use of motorized battering rams to unlawfully enter homes. Houses belonging to
women and children were wrongfully destroyed, Gates showed little to no remorse. 25,000 arrests
were made after the massive sweep of South LA had ended. The operation turned many innocent

In the United States Declaration of Independence, the statement Unalienable rights, that among
these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In that remark, life was the first right listed and
in circumstances like citizens not having free access to healthcare this right of Americans appears
contradictory. In the Preamble of Constitution of the United States, states to promote the general
welfare and acquiring healthcare fit for the people is general welfare (Kucinich). Success with
this system is seen inside and outside of a medical center. The NHS (National Health Service in
the United Kingdom) currently lists about 14,000 jobs available in a variety of different fields of

The Visual Encyclopedia Of Late Roman Art
from the visual encyclopedia of late Roman art to tell a story. In addition, pagans and Christians
both produced similar non verbal, iconographical images that pointed to a shared conceptual
backcloth in which both pagans and Christians had a prior agreement in a form of life. This form
is largely defined through the relationship between death and the afterlife. One such form involves
the iconographical depictions of events that occurred in the catacombs themselves refrigeria meals
(in the Christian case) to commemorate the apostles and future saints Peter and Paul, or even the
deaths of everyday Christians. These meals were events in which the living feasted in the presence
of the dead. However, the small, perforated piscinae... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The benefit of association provided by collective catacomb burial, as well as artistic depictions
of virtues on tombs, was one that crossed different religious and class groups; these associations
suggest that, at least up until the third century, these types of shared experiences were an
important way for an individual to connect their life (and death) to wider society as a whole.
This, in turn, helped people make sense of the world that both Christians and pagans lived in.
Thus, it is sufficient to say that Christian catacomb art, compared to pagan catacomb art, does
not necessarily reflect any distinctly more confident belief in the afterlife than the other; rather,
art served as a sort of consolation between the life one lived and how they hoped to be
remembered after death, especially in the lower class. Yet, just like burial, Christian art was a way
for Christians to find specific meaning in their collective Roman experience. The emergence of
Christian art reflected the emergence of a characteristically Christian social identity, one that
revolved primarily around the interpretation of biblical narratives. While it is true that both
Christians and pagans used similar artistic types, it is also true that even when similar
iconographical figures were depicted, Christians and pagans were attracted to icons that reflected
their specific religious beliefs. This duality will be shown in two ways: first, by analyzing how

Analysis Of The Plague Of Doves
Pluto, North Dakota does not exist. It is not a current town in the United States, nor are there any
records of any area in North Dakota referring to itself as Pluto. By inventing this setting for the
2008 novel The Plague of Doves, author Louise Erdrich gives herself incredible freedom to
develop a limitless narrative. Readers familiar with the general reputation of North Dakotawill
recognize many of the expectations. Erdrich s town of Pluto is rural and conservative, with
persistently palpable tension between the predominantly Caucasian population and the victimized
minority of ethnically Native Americans. Much about the plot and perspective of this novelseems to
rely on its structure around many narrators. The Plague of Doves is told from multiple perspectives
and the timelines jump indiscriminately, sometimes with plots separated by decades seeming to
exist in tandem. While these literary elements are remarkable, informative, and provide the novel
with a significantly unique identity, the importance of setting cannot be overlooked. As focus
oscillates between narrators and time periods, it is the fictional town of Pluto that remains the
foundational factor. Without this shared setting, the novel could unravel into disparate themes. Yet
readers subconsciously recognize the importance of place. As the crimes and social injustices
repeatedly occur in a central location, the novel becomes less about the people and more about the
legacy they inherit. The characters

Key Factors Of Successful Mitigation Projects Throughout...
Problem Statement Emergency managers in the United States have it easy compared to
individuals who work in the developing world. Although challenges like limited budgets or
political will may be universal problems, in places like Uganda, they are magnified. These areas
are home to the most vulnerable populations. Where poverty, little to no infrastructure or
government services, and a lack of access to education, create the potential for a disaster to inflict
deviating damage. Mitigation programs have the greatest potential for reducing the impact of such
events. However, unlike the United States, these countries often times don t have the resources to
establish and maintain many types of mitigation programs. As the world has started to become a
globalized community, many industrialized nations have recognized this need, and want to
provide aid to these countries. Because of the reality that this aid has its limits, and that every aid
dollar is precious, it is important to be able to maximize the return on this investment. This
Research project will identify key factors of successful mitigation projects throughout the
developing world in order to establish a set of guidelines for future projects. With these guidelines,
valuable time and resources will be saved and mitigation projects will have maximum impact on
the communities they serve. This is not only a way of developing low cost projects to developing
nations, but it is a way of insuring that investors in these types

  • 2. The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Hueshi Hanif Kueishi s Buddha of Suburbia depicts a young man called Karim Amir and his search for identity in 1970s London. As the plot progresses, it becomes apparent that Karim does not fall into a distinct category, defined by sexuality, class, or race. He is a young mixed race man with fluid sexuality. He is a funny kind of Englishman a product of two old histories (Kureishi 3). He is placed in the position of a hybrid because of his cultural background, and by the endless racist encounters that occur in his life. He is not a traditional protagonist who fully belongs to one social group or identity. The narrative ultimately brings Karim to a realization that it is impossible for him to find a place in the society. Karim s character dismantles the normativemovement of adolescence into a societally accepted adulthood, and the societal expectations that discriminate against him because he is almost English. By residing in a queer space and time in the Buddha of Suburbia, Karim not only subverts the conventional construction of adulthood, but also withstands the hegemonies of race that affect him as a half Indian living in London. Often placed as the Other, Karim rejects both extremes. He rejects England s racialized view of him, and normative ideas of home, and family. He acknowledges his odd mixture of continents and blood, of here and there, of belonging or not and sets out to look for trouble, which would distract him from his gloomy, slow and heavy family life (3). ... This article uses the Bloomberg National Poll which showed Obama having a thirteen point lead over Romney while the Associated Press Poll resulted in Obama having a three point lead while the Pew Research Center had the president up by four points. These polls ranged from a three point to a thirteen point lead which means that different sampling will yield different results. Location, demographic, and whether the state is democratic or republican plays an important part in the results you will get from the polls. According to the article, small differences in methods between popular polls can result in large differences when voter commitment is still uncertain (Tackett, 2012). During this election, polls were a great source of information for voters to use in their decision making process. Bloomberg s poll surveyed 1,002 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for the full sample. This means that if the polls were conducted 100 times, the data would be within 3 points above or below the reported percentage in 95 of 100 surveys (Tackett, 2012). Total Knee Replacement Managing Mobility After a Total Knee Replacement November 15, 2011 INTRODUCTION In Kindred Rehabilitation, the patient had a total knee replacement due to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes degenerative changes, within the joints causing bone stiffening and reactive inflammation. My patient was admitted on 10/21/11 with osteoarthritis and a left total knee replacement. Her PT and INR were a concern because she had developed mild thrombocytopenia which resulted in the elevation and potential bleeding. The physician had to take her off of Lovenox and switch her to an oral anti coagulant Xarelto at 10mg once daily. During her care I was educated by the interdisciplinary teams managing mobility, safety, and the more... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The agenda was quite clear that during their observations the recovery showed needs were decreased according to age and BMI. They stated older patients were in need of more assistance and longer stay in the hospital as opposed to younger adults. I found it interesting that they saw patients with bilateral knees had decreased needs and that unilateral were in need of more assistance before discharge. Managing pain was their first priority during research and rehabilitation, followed by instructing care of their own surgical wound. The aim of this study was to actively reinforce assessment and management after this procedure and giving guidance to those in health care. According to Su et all (2009), knee replacement is an effective way to find relief of pain and improve mobility, but most importantly giving the patient education and skills during early recovery. In comparison, all articles focused on the need of improving mobility after surgery. Assessing the patient s abilities and the need for physical therapyand keeping an eye out for complications. A main focus was pain relief and that recovery for each patient varies, but it is important to get them ambulating with assistive devices soon after surgery. Cognitive Behavioral Therapies for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is classified as an anxiety disorder that can develop after an individual has observed and/or experienced an extreme traumatic event that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury to one s self or another (APA, 2000). An extreme traumatic event can include, but is not limited to, military combat, terrorist attacks, natural or manmade disasters, sexual assault, physical assault, robbery, and torture (APA, 2000). The type of traumatic event could influence the way in which medical and mental health care professionals assess, conceptualize, and subsequently treat the individuals with a PTSD diagnosis. The purpose of psychoeducation is to legitimize the traumatic reaction, to help the client develop a formulation of her or his symptoms, and to establish a justification for treatment (Harvey, Bryant, Tarrier, 2003). Prolonged Exposure and/or In Vivo Exposure Prolonged exposure requires that the client repeatedly, in a systematic manner, relive the memories of the traumatic event over an extended period of time (Foa, Dancu, Hembree, Jaycox, Meadows, Street, 1999; Foa Rauch, 2004; Harvey, Bryant, Tarrier, 2003). In prolonged exposure, the client is expected to (a) vividly call to mind the traumatic event, with as much detail as possible, (b) recount the memory of the traumatic event to the therapist in the present tense, and (c) have constant exposure to the memory until the distress decreases (McDonagh, McHugo, Sengupta, Demment, Schnurr, Friendman, Ford, Mueser, Fournier, Descamps, 2005). The therapist s role, in prolonged exposure, is to help the client identify hot spots or the most distressing aspect of the memory. The therapist and the client then develop a hierarchy of memories to address, from least to most distressing. These memories are addressed one at a time until habituation of anxiety to the memory occurs, which is determined by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. A Puerto Rican Childhood Analysis Cautionary old wive s tales have long been an effective way to teach children morality and values without boring them. In Judith Ortiz Cofer s A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood (rpt. In Santi V. Buscemi and Charlotte Smith, 75 Readings Plus, 10th ed. [New York: McGraw Hill, 2013] 67 71) it is clear how a good storyteller such as Mama can capture the attention her audience. Cofer s grandmother often tells these cuentos to her daughters and granddaughters over afternoon coffee. These stories are used as an indirect way for Mama to teach her familythe values and lessons that she has learned throughout her life. With her family members, Mama s presence demands a universal respect. Everyone in the room listens to what Mama has to say, even if it s not what they want to hear. Mama is the absolute leader among the women her family and her opinions are held in high regard. Cofer acknowledges this saying that even her own motherdid not possess Mama s matriarchal power to command and keep everyone s attention (68). • 9. Essay Summary of Thoreau Synopsis Economy: This is the first chapter and also the longest by far. Thoreau begins by outlining his project: a two year and two month stay at a crude cabin in the woods near Walden Pond. He does this, he says, in order to illustrate the spiritual benefits of a simplified lifestyle. He easily supplies the four necessities of life (food, shelter, clothing, and fuel). He meticulously records his expenditures and earnings, demonstrating his understanding of economy, as he builds his house and buys and grows food. For a home and freedom, he spends a mere $25. Complementary Verses: This chapter consists entirely of a poem, The Pretensions of Poverty, by seventeenth century English poet Thomas Carew. The poem criticizes those who... Following is a description of the sounds audible from his cabin: the church bells ringing, carriages rattling and rumbling, cows lowing, whip poor wills singing, owls hooting, frogs croaking, and cockerels crowing. Solitude: Thoreau rhapsodizes about the beneficial effects of living solitary and close to nature. He loves to be alone, for I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude, and he is never lonely as long as he is close to nature. He believes there is no great value to be had by rubbing shoulders with the mass of humanity. Visitors: Thoreau writes about the visitors to his cabin. Among the 25 or 30 visitors is a young Canadian woodchopper, whom Thoreau idealizes as approaching the ideal man, and a runaway slave, whom Thoreau helps on his journey to freedom in Canada. The Bean Field: Thoreau relates his efforts to cultivate two and a half acres of beans. He plants in June and spends his summer mornings weeding the field with a hoe. He sells most of the crop, and his small profit of $8.71 covers his needs. The Village: Thoreau visits the small town of Concord every day or two to hear the news, which he finds as refreshing in its way as the rustle of the leaves. Nevertheless, he fondly but rather contemptuously compares Concord to a gopher colony. In late summer, he is arrested for refusing to pay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Vertigo Themes Film Analysis 1: The Power of Vertigo I remember watching Vertigo for the first time back when I was still very young, but at the time, I didn t really understand anything about the movie. As I watched it again as I grew older, I learned to appreciate how great this movie really is and the special narrativestyle that the movie presented. Vertigo, to me, was always known as Alfred Hitchcocks best film. Most of Hitchcock s well known films like Psycho or North by Northwest have unique title sequences that were an important part of their respective themes and narratives. For Vertigo s title sequence, it starts with an extreme close up of a woman s lips, which suggests the foreshadowing of Judy s role in the movie. The intro then shifts to the person s eyes, while the eyes, referencing the idea of looking and watching like what Scottie will do for the most part of the movie. Visual motifs were presented during this sequence such as the spinning spiral patters. These were motifs that are carried through into the narrative. The film is about John Scottie Ferguson, a detective who suffers from acrophobia, which is probably the reason for the title Vertigo . He has guilt complex over what happened in the beginning of the movie when the police officer fell off and died. When he accepts to watch over his friend s suicidal wife for his final job, he madly falls in love with her . Later on in the movie, Scottie tries to save Madeleine from falling off a steeple, but was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Annabelle also ends up with straight brown hair and blue eyes. Another thing is that in the book Percy does not own any type of electronic device, because they attract monsters. In the book,he uses a glass ball to defeat Medusa. In the movie, Percy has an iPod tough. Medusa was seen through the reflection of his iPod touch. In conclusion, The book and and the movie of Percy Jackson: The lightning thief, have many similarities and differences. The book is more descriptive, you can picture what is happening in your mind. In the movie, it is more realistic. You don t have to guess what s happening, you can see it visually. The two are very interesting in their own ways. • 12. Comparing Frankenstein, Aylmer, and Dr. Phillips Essay... Comparing Frankenstein, Aylmer, and Dr. Phillips Authors Mary Shelly, Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Steinbeck have all created scientists in at least one piece of their work. Mary Shelly s character Frankenstein, from her novel Frankenstein, is a man who is trying to create life from death. Aylmer, the main character in Nathaniel Hawthornes short story The Birthmark, is a scientist who is trying to rid his wife of a birthmark on her almost perfect complexion. In John Steinbeck s The Snake the main character Dr. Phillips is attempting to mate starfish until a woman interrupts his work to buy a snake. While written in different times by very different authors who have varying knowledge in science, the three characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both scientists seem crazy and have a God Complex. Frankenstein states, A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me (pg 155). They both attempt to undo God s work. Aylmer and Frankenstein worked relentlessly on their experiments, completely disregarded the outside world and allowing no one in while they worked. To Aylmer, his experiment was everything to him, it meant more to him than his wife and therefore he had the ability to control her for the sake of his experiment. Frankenstein spent his whole life trying to run away from his experiment, it controlled him. Neither of them had any forethought and because of that, their subjects suffered. Aylmer and Frankenstein exhibit similar qualities and at the same time show how very different they are. John Steinbeck s character Dr. Phillips is a very different from the other two scientists but he still shares some similar qualities. Like Frankenstein, Dr. Phillips shows how careless he is with his work by missing a series of tests with mating starfish because he was busy watching the woman watch her snake eat a rat in his laboratory. There was a woman in Dr. Phillips life too, just like in Aylmer s. But in Dr. Phillips s case the woman controlled him and she was more important to him than his experiment. • 14. Informative Effects Of Holocaust Concentration Camps Daelyn Sagert September 5, 2017 Comp 4th Informative essay Holocaust Concentration Camps The Holocaust nearly made the Jewish population and religion disappear from the face of the Earth. From January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945; Adolf Hitler, German politician and leader of the Nazi party, ran the Holocaust all over Germany and Eastern Europe. Prisoners and victims of the Holocaust include: the majority of the Jewish population, German Communists, Socialists, Social Democrats, Roma (Gypsies), Jehovah s Witnesses, homosexuals, and people accused of socially deviant or socially unacceptable behavior. They were sent to many different areas that had different purposes. The most used places they were sent to are called concentration camps. Once they entered the concentration camps, there was no escaping; those people officially became prisoners. There were 23 main concentration camps and around 900 sub camps. Concentration camps tricked the Jewish people into coming into them by offering them a better life on the welcoming signs outside. Some of the main camps had many different inhumane uses. All of the camps are notorious for their cruel and evil ways of everything that they did to prisoners, such as the genocide the Holocaust caused (Concentration Camps, Killing Methods, Jewish Population). A lesser known camp, Westerbork, is located in the Netherlands. This concentration camp was known as a Transit camp, which meant it wasn t the end of the line for the prisoners who arrived there. These camps were a temporary accommodation for the groups of prisoners that were being shipped throughout the country. Often these camps are where families were split up by German Nazi soldiers. Westerbork was used from October 1939 through April 1945. This camp was shut down by Canadian liberation. Westerbork still stands as a monument today (Concentration Camps). The next concentration camp, Dachau, is located in Germany. This camp was the longest running major concentration camp throughout the Holocaust. It started being used in March 1933 and was not shut down until April 1945. This was a forced labor camp, so the majority of people survived when at this camp, but you didn t always get to stay there unless you worked as hard as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Analysis Of The Poem Rip Van Winkle Washington Irving was credited with introducing the short story as a new genre in American literature, as William Hedges observes, yet I find it surprising that this story could have been taught as utterly original. As Emerson and the Transcendentalists were able to synthesize the mystical aspects of Puritan thought with the rational and secular facets of Enlightenment thinking, so Irving weaves a new tapestry out of many existing threads of American experience. Rip Van Winkle is a mature version of Franklin s short fictional sketches, such as The Speech of Polly Baker, and if one were to read isolated passages from Irving and Franklin aloud, it could be difficult to identify the source, as both develop a muted sarcasm and rely heavily... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mythical elements of the narrative are most obvious when Gothic elements begin to creep in. As Rip hears his name echoing in the woods, but can see nothing but a crow winging its solitary flight across the mountain, Irving tugs gently on the thread of the Salem trials, suggesting that the supernatural is afoot in the woods. The crow sighting is not incidental here, either, as Crow or Raven would signal the onset of a trickster narrative in oral literature. Irving nudges readers toward the mythical reading, in part, by endearing them to Rip, who could hardly be accused of witchcraft. The choice, in other words, that Irving forces readers to confront is whether to make fools of themselves by trying to explain the entire episode as factual history (thus perpetuating the Salem nonsense) or sink into the metaphorical complexities of the story. And, like a good myth, the story doesn t really leave much choice in the end, but casts its own spell that carries the reader where it will. From the postscript, readers know that the narrative is a synthesis of German folklore and Indian legends. Irving explicitly demonstrates knowledge of the Trickster figure by citing the Manitou or Spirit...who kept about the wildest recesses of the Catskill Mountains, and took a ... In this certain case, poor Tigger has been murdered and there are 3 possible suspects. Merton s Anomie Theory will be applied to suspect number 1: Winnie The Pooh. Eysenck s Theory will be applied to suspect number 2: Piglet and Social Bond Theory will be applied to suspect number 3: Eeyore. Merton s Anomie theory works around the theory that a society or culture inadvertently bring out offending behavior through pressure between the social norms and the compulsion to achieve them (Thio, 1975). There are 5 aspects of social structure that associate with this theory (Merton, 1938). Conformity,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Psychoticism relates to certain personality traits such as being impulsive, hostile and aggressive (Eysenck, 1992). This theory is relatively consistent with the anecdotal evidence about Piglet, but has more evidence that suggests that Piglet was not the murderer. The anecdotal evidence states that Piglet has a Generalized Anxiety disorder which ties in with Neuroticism (Cattell and Scheier 1961). Eysenck and Gudjonsson (1989) had found offenders tend to score high on both Psychoticism and Neuroticism, (Lykken, 1990) which Piglet does not. He is often described as a generous animal, which does not tie in with the aggressive, non empathetic, and anti social nature of Psychoticism (Woody and Claridge 1977). Hirschi s Social Bond Theory is a theory that instead of being based on why people in society commit offences, it is based on why people in society do not commit offences (Hirschi, 2002). Hirschi (2002) identifies 4 main social bonds that can be used to determine the individual s likelihood to become involved in deviant crimes. These 4 social bonds are attachment, commitment, involvement and belief (Roland 1971). Altogether these social bonds are what make up the average mindset and behavior of a non criminal (Gundy Yoder, 2007). So if a person was not to have a strong presence of these bonds, it would then indicate deviant or offending behavior, and this is the case of Eeyore. The first of these 4 social ... • 20. Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee Essay The way that people understand their circumstances and surroundings is often directly correlated to the way they perceive the world around them. An adult understands much more around him than a child does because of the mature, more knowledgeable perception he has. Meanwhile, the child, while not able to fully understand what she sees, often sees more than an adult because of the knowledge hungry, curious perceptionshe has. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the characters range in gender, age, and intelligence. The narrator herself is a young elementary age child. She is extremely smart for her age, but because of her limited exposure to the world, does not fully understand the seriousness and danger of the story unfolding around her. While the book To Kill a Mockingbird covers many controversial topics, perception and the change certain characters undergo that effects this perception are the key to connecting many of them. One of the main characters in Too Kill a Mockingbird is Jem. He is Scout s older brother. As the story is told, he ages, transitioning from a young boy into a teenager. His perception of the world around him changes vastly as he ages, leaving curiosity behind for a better understanding. The ways by which trends and fashion news are communicated to the public has evolved as technology advances. Before television and the internet, it was difficult for designers, photographers, and fashion brands alike to spread word about the latest in fashionto a large mass of people. With the help of modern technology, fashion has made its mark in the world by appearing on televisionnetworks, online blogs, social media, and digital magazines. In the past, fashion was viewed as something to which only privileged people could have access. It was hard to keep up with trends because it was not mass communicated in the same way that it is today. Fashion shows were the best way to see the newest styles and collections from high end designers. However, it is difficult do attend these shows because the tickets go to celebrities, socialites, and other prominent people in the fashion world. Harvard professor, Jeannie Suk, notes that the growing ease of travel and communication has made the dissemination of fashion much easier (Harvard Magazine). Another way fashion was accessible was through magazines. The most common way people stayed caught up with fashion was through magazines because they were affordable and up to date. The Cuban missile crisis has frequently been portrayed as the only time where the world stood in the point of nuclear war between the superpowers. In the summer of 1587 a group of nearly 120 men and women from England arrived on Roanoke Island, one of a chain of barrier islands now known as the Outer Banks, off the coast of what is now known as North Carolina. This group of settlers set sail from England with the mission of making the Queen s wishes a reality. John White was appointed Governor of the colony by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sometime later, Governor White set sail for England to gather supplies for the colony. Before he had left for England, White and the colonists had discussed leaving the settlement and founding the city of Raleigh on the mainland, so the fact that the colonists were no longer in the settlement would not have been surprising to White. The colonists also worked out signals to communicate with those who were coming to their assistance. For example, if they left due to an attack, they were supposed to carve a Maltese cross over their doorposts to signal that they were in distress. Alternatively, if they left to try to find a more suitable place, they were supposed to carve the names of the areas they would be traveling through so that White would be able to find them upon his ... I began the class with lots of questions, and I do not believe I can say for sure that they have been answered, but I can say that I am now at peace with the idea that some of my questions may not be able to be answered in this life. It amazes me that I have been able to grow so much in such a short period of time. The growing pains were great, but the reward was greater. I feel that I am in a much better place in my life now. In the past few months, I have tried to reclaim some of the closeness to God that I feel I have been missing. It has not been easy for me to give up control of my life. I have strong tendencies to be in control of what goes on, so that I have some inclination of how to prepare to react. As a result of learning to let go, I feel much less fearful of the future or my place in it. Not only has this class helped me come to terms with the idea that I should not have total control over my life, but it has also reminded me of things I had forgotten about. It truly left me pleasantly surprised with the content of the class. I cannot lie, much of the curriculum contained information that I already had some knowledge of, but that is only a result of my obsessive research in the pursuit of answers. However, something that I appreciated greatly was the inclusion of the Apocrypha. Further, I appreciated that verses from Apocryphal books were used in the same way that Canonical verses were used. This was one of the biggest problems I had with the way Christianity has always been taught to me. Many exclude the Apocrypha as if it does not even exist, much less as an original piece of the non canonical Bible. This fact, colloquially stated, has always seemed sketchy to me. I was not even aware of its existence until about a year ago. My foundations were shaken a little when I found out. I compare it to finding out about a long held family secret. I could not find anything in what I read of the Apocrypha to be too out there, so I did not understand why it was never mentioned in the first place. They didn t give me a challenge like I was supposed to have and from that being, now I have to prepare myself for the college life and teach myself the things I was supposed to be taught in high school. The schoolI came from didn t have a math teacher or a history teacher all year so we just sat in the class rooms and played everyday all day and I still ended up passing and that school was Albany Early College. They told me that I would finish high school with an associate degree but all I got was a discombobulated school and an uncontrolled school. The next school I went to didn t care either. They showed me that I can skip class everyday and still pass with an A average. Despite all the things I didn t get taught in high school, I did learn some unique aspects that I can reflect on and use for college. The skills I reflect on are annotating, using the Cornell note taking system, and how to be on time for school. To begin with, the first aspect I reflect on from high school is annotating. Annotating helped me a lot when I was taking final exams and other test. This is one of the most I reflect on because I can use this skill to help me in college. I first learned how to annotate in the 11th grade when I was at Monroe Comprehensive High School. The way my teacher showed me how to annotate was to number the paragraphs then summarize the paragraphs individually, after doing that it helped me understand the passage better as if it was hard to comprehend. My teacher also told me to underline any sentences that look interesting to me and circle any words that I am not familiar with and go and look them up after I was done. But you don t just annotate and be done, but you have to go back and study what you annotated so you can get a full understanding of whatever you re annotating. Annotating is a big skill that I was taught because I can use it in other subjects other than English such as: History, Science, and other classes, but I can t annotate the same way in every subject. For example: If I annotate math the same way I do in History then my notes would be messed up because I am learning two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition, pagans and Christians both produced similar non verbal, iconographical images that pointed to a shared conceptual backcloth in which both pagans and Christians had a prior agreement in a form of life. This form is largely defined through the relationship between death and the afterlife. One such form involves the iconographical depictions of events that occurred in the catacombs themselves refrigeria meals (in the Christian case) to commemorate the apostles and future saints Peter and Paul, or even the deaths of everyday Christians. These meals were events in which the living feasted in the presence of the dead. However, the small, perforated piscinae... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The benefit of association provided by collective catacomb burial, as well as artistic depictions of virtues on tombs, was one that crossed different religious and class groups; these associations suggest that, at least up until the third century, these types of shared experiences were an important way for an individual to connect their life (and death) to wider society as a whole. This, in turn, helped people make sense of the world that both Christians and pagans lived in. Thus, it is sufficient to say that Christian catacomb art, compared to pagan catacomb art, does not necessarily reflect any distinctly more confident belief in the afterlife than the other; rather, art served as a sort of consolation between the life one lived and how they hoped to be remembered after death, especially in the lower class. Yet, just like burial, Christian art was a way for Christians to find specific meaning in their collective Roman experience. The emergence of Christian art reflected the emergence of a characteristically Christian social identity, one that revolved primarily around the interpretation of biblical narratives. • 52. Analysis Of The Plague Of Doves Pluto, North Dakota does not exist. It is not a current town in the United States, nor are there any records of any area in North Dakota referring to itself as Pluto. By inventing this setting for the 2008 novel The Plague of Doves, author Louise Erdrich gives herself incredible freedom to develop a limitless narrative. Readers familiar with the general reputation of North Dakotawill recognize many of the expectations. Mitigation programs have the greatest potential for reducing the impact of such events. However, unlike the United States, these countries often times don t have the resources to establish and maintain many types of mitigation programs. As the world has started to become a globalized community, many industrialized nations have recognized this need, and want to provide aid to these countries. Because of the reality that this aid has its limits, and that every aid dollar is precious, it is important to be able to maximize the return on this investment. This Research project will identify key factors of successful mitigation projects throughout the developing world in order to establish a set of guidelines for future projects. With these guidelines, valuable time and resources will be saved and mitigation projects will have maximum impact on the communities they serve. This is not only a way of developing low cost projects to developing nations, but it is a way of insuring that investors in these types ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
