Usage of wireless sensor network increasing and becoming cost effective now days. Many real-time applications using this network system. One of the example for such application is monitoring a highway or railway bridges which plays an important role in transportation. Many bridges in world collapse due to some internal and external factors, those factors must be monitored in order to avoid this collapse. This paper proposes automatic bridge monitoring system using wireless sensor networks. The proposed system consists of three sensors to monitor the bridge condition continuously i.e. Accelerometer to detect the jerks in the bridge or in pillar, flex sensor to detect the bend or orientation in the bridge, load cell to detect the overload on the bridge. This data from the sensors will be processed by controller (PIC18) and is transferred to the receiver node at the management center using the transmitter node at the transmitter end whenever the fault occurred. CC2500 module is used as a wireless node in this paper. At the receiver side raspberry pi is used to monitor the received data which can also store the database in it. Through the GSM an alert message is also sent to the operator along with the exact location where fault occurred in bridge. The proposed system can be used efficiently with low cost.

to help them perform various functions, like
digital processing

4. Smart sensors - Main functions:
The four main functions of smart sensors are
• Measurement
• Configuration
• Verification
• Communication
5. Measurements are taken by detecting physical signals
and converting them into electrical signals. This helps
measure and monitor things, such as traffic,
temperature, and industrial applications.
Configuration is an important feature because it allows
the sensor to detect alignment or installation errors,
Verification function has a variety of uses, such as
continuous supervision of the intelligent sensor’s
behavior, using a set of supervisory equipment/circuits
implemented in the sensor.
Finally, the communication feature enables the sensor
to talk to the main microprocessor or microcontroller.
6. Applications
With their monitoring and tracking capabilities, smart
sensors are used in a wide range of applications.
Various industries have turned to smart sensors to help them
with different monitoring tasks, including, but not limited

7. Different Types of Smart Sensors
Level sensors - used to measure the volume of
space taken up in a container.
• A vehicle's fuel gauge might be connected to a
level sensor that monitors the level of fuel in the
tank.
Temperature sensors - a sensor that can monitor
a component's temperature so a corrective action
can be taken if necessary.
• In an industrial setting, a temperature sensor can
be used to make sure machinery is not
overheating.

systems with smart ones for their efficiency,
ease of use, and advanced communication

10. How are smart sensors different from base
sensors?
Smart sensors include an embedded Digital Motion Processor (DMP)
A DMP is, essentially, just a microprocessor that is integrated into the sensor. It
enables the sensor to perform onboard processing of the sensor data. This might
mean normalizing the data, filtering noise or performing other types of signal
conditioning. In any case, a smart sensor performs data conversion digital
processing prior to any communication to external devices.
A base sensor is simply a sensor that isn't equipped with a DMP or other
compute resources that would enable it to process data.
Smart sensor produces output that is ready to use, a base sensor's output is raw
and must typically be converted into a usable format.
Smart sensors are generally preferred over base sensors because they include
native processing capabilities.
If an engineer is designing a device and needs complete control over sensor
input, then it will probably make more sense to use a base sensor than a smart
sensor.
Base sensors are cost effective than smart sensors because they contain fewer
components.
Although smart sensors are most often associated with industrial equipment, IoT
couldn't exist without smart sensors.
