Small Town Essay
Crafting an essay on the theme of a "Small Town" is no simple feat. At first glance, one might
assume that delving into the nuances of a small community would be straightforward, perhaps
even easier than tackling broader subjects. However, the challenge lies in capturing the essence
of these seemingly tranquil locales, where every cobblestone and every face holds a story.
To begin with, small towns are multifaceted microcosms. It's not just about describing the quaint
charm or picturesque landscapes; it's about peeling back the layers to reveal the intricate social
fabric that binds the community. This requires a keen eye for observation and an ability to
decipher the unspoken connections between residents.
Moreover, the task extends beyond mere portrayal. A successful essay on a small town demands
an understanding of the subtle dynamics that shape its identity. One must navigate through the
complexities of local traditions, interpersonal relationships, and the shared history that often
forms the backbone of these close-knit societies.
The writing process involves striking a delicate balance between romanticizing the simplicity of
small-town life and acknowledging the challenges that may lurk beneath its idyllic surface. It's
about capturing the paradoxical nature of these communities, where everyone knows everyone,
yet secrets linger in the whispers of the wind.
Additionally, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and stereotypes that often plague
discussions about small towns. It requires presenting a fresh perspective that transcends the
conventional narratives, offering readers an authentic glimpse into the heart and soul of these
often overlooked corners of the world.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of a small town is a formidable task that demands a
blend of observational prowess, cultural sensitivity, and narrative finesse. It's an exercise in
weaving a tapestry of words that does justice to the complexity and beauty of these miniature
societies.

The Sentimental Education of Frederic Henry
(Hemingway’s...
Ernest Hemingway s protagonist Frederic Henry says A Farewell to Arms with a
double meaning. The novel title is word play reflective of first, Frederic s desertion
of the war. His second farewell is to the arms of his beloved, Catherine Barkley after
her death in childbirth. Wandering stoically through life, looking for some natural
progression, Frederic lets one circumstance lead him to the next. At first, Frederic
exhibits the hedonistic aspirations of a college fraternity pledge, motivated only by
drinking and sex. His selfish motives take him into a courtship with Catherine and
they fall in love. He displays apathy and has no passion or conviction until the

Frederic knows he doesn t love her and is playing a game, like bridge, in which you
said things instead of playing cards (30). Craig Kleinman studies Catherine s
participation of a yes no yes...dialectical bouncing. Her approach is like a seductive
game (54). Yet, Frederic pursues her knowing she is vulnerable from the loss of
her long time boyfriend, a casualty of war. They begin seduction in mutual gain. He
wants to gain a clean partner to engage in sex with and she wants comfort from her
sorrows. He reluctantly goes to see her one night after drinking but she has a
headache and can t see him. He has an epiphany of his feelings towards her then,
but when I could not see her there I was feeling lonely and hollow (41). The affair
becomes serious when Frederic is wounded at the front and sent to the hospital in
Milan. Catherine is his nurse and offers him direct care. She has previously been
initiated into the cruelties and absurdities of life through her previous loss. As a
type of survival tactic Catherine instantly falls in love with Frederic at the hospital
(Spanier). He is wounded but alive, which is enough for her. Frederic adds his love
of Catherine to his list of coping methods as he describes, I was not made to think,
I was made to eat. My God, yes. Eat and drink and sleep with Catherine (233). He
notes the internal change when, after deserting, he is riding in a train car with a

Disadvantages Of Wireless Technology
No doubt, in last few decades technologies involved in the communication systems
have been developed exponentially along with attractive features and facilities.
Wireless communication system is one of the biggest inventions of the century and
its developments can be processed in different terms of generation having approx.
10 years for each one. At every step of each generation is to provide to link with
persons at every corner of globe with set of quality services. Today we are in Fourth
Generation; it is categorized based on its characteristic services and features like
transmission signals, data transmission rate, bandwidth frequency and nature of the
services provided. First generation (1G) is introduced in 1980, so each generation
had been comes at the end of every decade. First generation used analog signals,
circuit switching and FDMA with 30 kHz channels occupying the 824MHz 894MHz
frequency band .First generation supports only voice transmission .The data was not
reliable; there were interrupted communication and few other problems in First
Generation [1]. Second Generation (2G) technology was established in 1990, which
used digital signals for transmission and two digital modulationschemes TDMA and
CDMA with circuit switched network . Second Generation uses the existing radio
spectrum to provide the services. It was developed to overcome the previous
generation s drawbacks, and to have data and voice transmission. But this generation
also has few drawbacks like
Sports are Entertaining and Fun Essay
Sports are Entertaining and Fun
Sports in society today can be entertaining to watch and also fun to play for both
men and women of all ages. I am a person that takes sports very seriously in my life.
I enjoy playing sports as much as I enjoy watching them on television. I started
playing baseball when I was seven years old, and played up until I graduated high
school. I also played basketball from fifth grade to a junior in high school. I think
that I am so involved in sports because my family takes sports very seriously, and
they got me involved in them at an early age. My Dad, Mom, brothers and cousins
have all been active members of sports throughout their lives. We all enjoy doing
anything involved with sports. It could be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I want to find out which sports are the most popular overall by men and women. I
want to find out how men and women react when they are watching their favorite
sporting event on television, or in person. I want to see if they get really excited
during the game, or if they just sit there and watch closely. I want to see what
traditions or pre game rituals that people have before watching or participating in a
sport. I want to find out what sports people played in high school, and if they are still
involved with that sport in any way today.
The three primary research methods that I chose were: surveys, interviews, and
observations. I thought that these three primary research methods would be the most
beneficial in finding out most of the answers to all of my questions. I made a survey
of ten questions related to sports. Some of the basic questions that I asked were:
What is your gender? How well do you like sports? Did you play sports in high
school? Do you watch sports on television? Some of the more in depth questions
that I asked were: When watching your favorite sporting event, how excited do
you get? What is your favorite sport to play? What is your favorite sport to watch
on television, if any? Have you ever been to a professional sporting event? How
many hours of sports, on average a week do you watch? Do you think that sports are

Disproportionate Dwarfism
Dwarfism is short stature that results from a genetic or medical condition.
Dwarfism is generally defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches (147 centimeters)
or less. The average adult height among people with dwarfism is 4 feet (122 cm).
Many different medical conditions cause dwarfism. In general, the disorders are
divided into two broad categories: Disproportionate dwarfism. If body size is
disproportionate, some parts of the body are small, and others are of average size or
above average size. Disorders causing disproportionate dwarfism inhibit the
development of bones. Proportionate dwarfism. A body is proportionately small if all
parts of the body are small to the same degree and appear to be proportioned like a

So the head, trunk and limbs are all small, but they re proportionate to each other.
Because these disorders affect overall growth, many of them result in poor
development of one or more body systems. Growth hormone deficiency is a
relatively common cause of proportionate dwarfism. It occurs when the pituitary
gland fails to produce an adequate supply of growth hormone, which is essential
for normal childhood growth. Signs include: Height below the third percentile on
standard pediatric growth charts Growth rate slower than expected for age Delayed
or no sexual development during the teen years When to see a doctor Signs and
symptoms of disproportionate dwarfism are often present at birth or in early infancy.
Proportionate dwarfism may not be immediately apparent. See your child s doctor if
you have any concerns about your child s growth or overall
Mark Twain Influences
The Father of American Literature
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, more commonly known as Mark Twain, is not just a
name most people know. It is a man of history who is said to be the Father of
American Literature. Although there are other great authors of this time, Mark Twain
used many different styles of writing within his work that helped to create the
mastermind of a writer he once was and so that it would live on to be talked about
today. Twain used a very relaxed style of writing that hadn t been used by any other
author during this point in time. With his writing of amazing stories about Tom
Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, the mighty Mississippi River, and many more Mark Twain
created adventure for the average American with his humor, attention to details, and
the realism he used. These stories along with many others help prove he is the
greatest influence to American Literature.

He moved to the nearby town Hannibal at the age of four which is nestled on the
banks of the Mississippi River, and a known location of some of his stories. His
father died when he was at the young age of twelve, so life became tough which
drove him to take multiple jobs in order to help his struggling family. Mark twain
was a writer from the very beginning. He was a printer s devil for the Missouri
Courier, and then in 1851 he became a typesetter and editorial assistant at the
Western Union, a local paper owned by his older brother (Trout). This is where
Mark published his first known sketch. In 1857, he boarded a steam boat and
headed to New Orleans at the age of twenty two. Several years later in 1864, Twain
left the city to move to San Francisco to work for various newspapers. When his
short story, Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog was published and circulated in 1865

What Role Does Diophantus Play In The Evolution Of
Algebra
Algebra is the basis of all math and its advancement took place in three major steps.
The first stage of algebra is rhetorical algebra dating back to before 275 BCE.
Rhetorical algebra was a form of algebra that contained no symbols so to them +, ,
and*, did not exist. It was usually explained orally or written on scribes. They were
able to do things such as find squad and cubed roots, solve linear equations, and
explain fractions. As well as recognizing irrational numbers and identifying that
quadratics had two answers. The next phase in algebras evolution was Syncopated
math. This was most popularly used between 275 BCE 1600. Diophantus played a
crucial role in this stage by being the first to develop algebraic notations and
abbreviations.
Building Consent Application For Demolition
Introduction
In this report I will examine a reflection on a building consent application for the
demolition of Riverside one as called or Shell Store , which is a non listed building
in a conservation area, and is part of the restoration project of the lost 19th century
Lower Barrier ditch of Chatham Lines. This is in the perspective view of the partial
and broader regeneration of the town environments and riverfront. The decision of
demolition of this listed building, was taken from an idealistic Masterplan organized
by Medway Council in 2010 for the restoration of the Chatham Gun Wharf site, in
respect of broader communal benefits, equally physical and intellectual, to the
nationally important historic defences.
The strategic location of the barrier ditch at Gun Wharf provides the southern point of
entry to the militarized zone and together with the neighbouring site of Fort Amherst,
provide the gateway to Chatham Dockyard s heritage area. In that respect the
already standing building called Riverside one or Shell Store , constructed over the
ditch, would require demolition as to provide access and therefore allow re
presentation of the section of Chatham Lines to the west of Dock Road to give a
sense of its original 19th century form.
Some Historic Background about the Gun Wharf ditch and the Riverside One building
In 1860 the Lower Barrier Ditch was partially filled after the end of the Gun Wharf
section. The changes in military needs forced the site to

Music Week Magazine Article On The Music Industry
Music Week magazine article
In the Music Industry there are four main areas:
1.Live Performance
2.Record Companies/Labels
3.Publishing Companies
4.Artist Management
It is vital to know how these four main areas of the music industry operate to this date,
what is happening around you and the impact it has on the world. Also, it is
important to understand their business mechanism, their role within Music Industry
and the relationships between the areas and how they link.
Live Performance:
Live performance in the music industry is big because this is where the most
money is made and how people get their most publicity. Since smart phones, and
the Internet has become such a huge deal, buying CD s is not as common as it was
anymore, which is why live performance is where a lot of the money is made. The
reason behind this is because a lot of the artists/bands fan bases much prefer watching
them live as to listening to an edited, highly compressed electronic version.
The live performance area consists of many different people with many different roles
in the music industry, which are booking, planning, managing, promoting, setting up
and performing. All roles in live performance are all just as important as each other
and cannot be done without one another.
The people that book and secure venues, also known as booking agents mainly book
the artists/bands a venue for a specific time and date. But it is not the booking agents
that decide on when and where to book for the
14 Year Olds-Personal Narrative
One stormy dark night me and 3 of my friends were about to the unthinkable for a
bunch of 14 year olds. My friend Dave was wearing a black shirt with a black beanie
black pants and a backpack filled with things we were gonna need for what we
were about to do. My other friend joe was wearing the same thing as Dave. And my
other friend Zane was wearing the same thing as Dave and Joe. we all pretty much
wearing the same thing.
There was a reason for wearing all black. It s because their was no trespassing on
the property so that way if the cops came driving around near the house we could
easily hide. We were about to step foot on the most frightful house of all time.
We were gonna go into the old fowler house. It was supposedly haunted by one of
the old fowler residents. the house was over 100 years old so we had no problem
believing that the house was haunted. The house was hidden in the forest behind the
dancing trees. As we approached the front door of the house we immediately heard a
loud thud coming from inside the house. My friends jumped as we heard the loud
noise.
I was the brave one out of the group. I turned the doorknob to the front door so we
could enter. I could tell my friends were hesitant about going in the house. We heard

Way of the Peaceful Warrior Essay
Sometimes the longest and toughest journeys are inside one s mind; and although
others cannot notice them instantly, they change personalities profoundly. Dan, the
main character, is a gymnast student for Berkley University, California. His life
seems perfect, he has everything he wants: friends, girls, good grades, his talent and
passion for gymnastics and the strive to go to the Olympics. Until he meets
Socrates. Socrates is a gas station attendant who leaves a mark in Dan s memory
right from the beginning. When they start to get to know each other, Dan
understands that he s nothing but a fool, and that he needs Socrates s guidance to
wake up and reach a deeper state of knowledge, a state of enlightenment.

But the most important out of body experience in his journey was one of the last
times he met Socrates, on the mountain. When Soc helps him reach enlightenment
and he finds himself dead (in an out of body experience), on the floor of a cave on
the top of the mountain he had climbed right before with Socrates and realizes that
his life, too, had been an illusion, a problem, nothing more than a humorous incident
when Consciousness had forgotten itself . His out of body experiences are
fundamental for the outcome of his journey, they allow him to look at his weaknesses
and learn about himself, understand that he has a long way to go.
Parables throughout the book provide Dan images and ideas for meditation or
introduce him to a new change in his journey. The moment when he understands
Socrates is only towards the end, when his teacher goes in the mountains to rescue
and help him with his final task, climbing the mountain, symbol for his ego and
adversities. He remembers a parable he had never understood before that moment: A
saintly woman was walking along the edge of a cliff. Several hundred feet below,
she saw a dead mother lion, surrounded by crying cubs. Without hesitation, she
leaped off the cliff so that they would have something to eat . This shows what
Socrates would figuratively be willing to do to help Dan growing up. Sometimes one
thinks they know their friends, but they don t really understand how
My Views On My Life
I am a female, I am upper middle class, these two aspects have shaped my
experiences in school and the way I view my life. These two aspects come with
enormous expectations that contributed to the way I view and act upon daily
situations. My economic social class I have have grown up in has opened many
doors, some that are positive and some that are negative. Next, being a female in
today s society is like being on a roller coaster, some situations are fantastic, other
situations I wish that I was a male. My identity in society and my gender have had
a great affect on my viewpoint of the world and how I chose to live my life. My
identity has shaped my school experience significantly. I come from an affluent
school that is predominantly white, being in the upper middle classI fit in perfectly. I
could walk down the halls confidently knowing that I wouldn t be discriminated,
because my social classstatus gave me all the privileges of being able to fit in .
Without the higher end of the social class it would be impractical to feel like you
fit in, because of all the expectations that come with going to a wealthy school.
From the costly brands of clothes, to keeping up with the in season fashion, the
ridiculous expectations for the standard student forbid the lower end of the social
class to feel welcomed into the school. These expectations come with a great deal
of stress. Teachers expected me to be at the top if the class because of my social class
status. Also, I was

So in my Justice 301 class we have been learning about the theorist Marx, Rawls,
Nozick, Hobbes, Locke, Kant, Bentham, Walzer, Harrington, Bernstein and Young
and many more other theorists. These people mentioned were the main ones we
focus in class more as to how our system has change from classical liberalism,
Modern Liberalism, democratic socialismand Marxism. The theorist I mentioned had
views on injustice which the four philosophical traditions viewed were justice,
freedom, state economic and lastly as to the individual. I would be explaining to
you my understanding of every system to how each of the theorists had a role in it
covering there four philosophical traditions. First of all one of the first systems we
learned in class was about Classical Liberalism which Kant, Nozick, Locke, and
Hobbes were in favor of this system. My interpretation of what classical Liberalism
means was the social contract similar of what the constitution provides that every
individual has freedom of speech, and religion therefore, it consisted of protecting
individuals rights with the rule of law, similarly what our founding fathers of the
constitution had planned. Classical liberalism also wanted freedom of the state which

Narrative and Genre Features in the Opening Sequence of Pulp Fiction
A narrative is the story itself and generic features are elements expected to be

Pulp Fiction is labeled as a gangster film; however gangster films follow very precise
generic elements such a death, contraband s, violence, wealth and strong family
loyalties.
Pulp Fiction doe follow the above mentioned elements but the locations of the action

This illustrates they are breaking conventions.
In a traditional narrative we expect to see characters that have prominent roles in the
film to be in the opening sequence; also you d expect the story contained in the
opening sequence to be followed up. This is not the case in Pulp Fiction. We leave
the opening scene in a moment of action. Therefore we are set up with the
expectation of what happens next? In a traditional linear narrative this is a question
which is likely to be answered. However in Pulp Fiction the next scene contains
different characters and a different plot. We do not return to the opening story till the
end of the film.
The next scene contains the opening credits. The music is upbeat and compliments the
emotional intensity of the two thieves situation. The music also suggests we are still
with the two thieves story.
In the middle of the title track we hear a radio changing dial and a new track plays
Jungle Boogie. This suggests unpredictability. This is also a subversion of traditions
in itself as it doesn t happen in any other film.
We enter the next scene mid way into a conversation. We do not know of they re

Sexual Impacts And Influence Of The Mass Media
Mass media has become a vital source from which young millennials get their daily
substance of entertainment. The growth of media availability has intensified the
images and sounds appearing to the youth of this generation. With the massive
growth of media usage and music streaming amongst the youth, there has been more
sexual trends and influence of popular culture during this time. The presence of
sexual content in mediahas intensified and became more omnipresent within the past
decade. Mass mediaimages has been dominating public spaces with sexualised
representations and messages that are impossible to avoid (Buckingham, Willett,
Bragg, Russell, 2010; Burke, Gridley, Pham, 2008; Flood, 2009; Levin Kilbourne,
2008; Papadopoulos, 2010; Rush La. Nauze, 2006a, 2006b; Zurbriggen et al., 2007).
Especially with young girls relying on the media for constant trends, we often don t
consider what these messages and sounds are portraying. These advancements in
media have expanded enormously to the sexual content and musicappearing in media
and sites today. Previously conducted content analysis of selected media showed that
music contained at least 40% more sexual content than any other medium, with 15%
of music s sexual content focusing solely on intercourse or sexual content, compared
to a 3% and 4% focus within television and movies, respectively (Pardun, L Engle,
Brown, 2005).

ABSTRACT
The deep web is a network infrastructure that is set in a mesh topology, much like the
surface web. The difference between the dark web and the surface web is the content,
internet protocols and users. Most of the information that is served through the dark
net is illegal. Law enforcement is working on coming up with better ways to track
and shut down certain sites offering services such as red rooms, but their efforts are

Information that is secure enough to stay hidden from web crawlers to index, lay

The Influence of Greek Thought on Modern Science and Mathematics
Parallels can be drawn from Greek thought and compared to today s modern world
views. This comparison also brings forth the influences of the Greek philosophies to
the world s contemporary aspects. More specifically, mathematics and science elicit
the relationships of the ancient Greek beliefs and the existing theories and truths.
Mathematics, as it relates to the Greek era and the present time, had created and still
creates a very new approach to the thoughts of the mechanics of nature. For instance,
Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and philosopher, believed the physical world
would be explained by numbers. He used his theory of numbers and applied them to

The theory of relativity is the theory of measurement; therefore, Einstein uses
numbers in relation with the fundamental laws of physics. Physics is the mechanics
of nature, which can be calculated through use of numbers. The application of
Pythagoras theory to Einstein s relativity is obviously not directly related; however,
the relevancy of mathematics used with the accordance of nature has influenced
many intellectuals, which in turn directly assisted Einstein s theory. Some of these
intellectuals are Aristotle, Ptolemy, and Newton.
The field of science during the times of the Greeks have greatly influenced the
modern world as one perceives it in the present day. The atomic theory has much
responsibility for the relation of Greek thought and modern beliefs. Democritus was
one of the fir4st Greek philosophers to explain the theory of the atom. He said that it

Religious Experience Analysis
In William James s The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human
Nature and Г‰mile Durkheim s Elementary Forms of Religious life, the societal
implications of religion are examined and analyzed. James and Durkheim possess
fairly similar methodologies in their approaches to religion. Both scholars examine
religious phenomena based on the experience on the participants. For both of them
the religious experience is the point of departure for formulating a theory of religion
(Joas). James refutes medical materialism (James, 19) and argues that it is the
extreme cases of religious fervor where true religious experiences will be found and
Durkheim introduces his theory on collective effervescence (Durkheim, 226) and the

One of Durkheim s key concepts is found in his analysis of moral life and that the
most fundamental structure for human belief was the distinction between the sacred
and profane (Lynch). The sacred things set apart and forbidden and the profane
mundane, ordinary, quotidian represent Durkheim s demonstration society s
tendency to develop categories for concepts and organizations in life. A version of
the sacred and profane can also be found in James s philosophy within his discussion
of solemnity . James says the sort of happiness in the absolute and everlasting is
what we find nowhere but in religion. It is parted off from all mere animal
happiness, all mere enjoyment of the present, by that element of solemnity of which I
have already made so much account. Solemnity is a hard thing to define abstractly,
but certain marks are patent enough. A solemn state of mind is never cruel or simple
it seems to contain a certain measure of its own opposite in solution (James 45) These
shared collective representations and beliefs about the existence of certain notions are
what define societies and demonstrate collective individual will (Seligman). This
concept of the individual contained within the
Raising The Percentage Of Junk Food In America
A problem with junk food in America is obesity. According to the LA County
Department of Public Health, 42% of children are obese or overweight. States should
have an extra tax on junk food or other unhealthy foods. Raising the tax could
decrease the percentage of obesity by making Americans pay more money. Another
reason why is that junk foodis very unhealthy. Finally, taxing the products could
increase the amount of money the government gets for taxes. Obesity is a big
problem in America, and the percentage rate has gone up consistently over the past
years. Mostly, all states have a percentage of obesity over 30%. If the states raised
the taxes, people might not buy as much junk foodas before. The number could
decrease. Many foods
Middle School Essay
Many 6th graders go to middle school at age 11 or 12. Seventy five percent of 6th
graders are sent to middle school, without any development of schedules and dress

When 6ths graders are sent to middle school early, they don t know the schedule and

Islam In Black America Summary
Justice and equality by any means necessary was said in one of the most
controversial speeches in history by a Nation of Islam superior named Malcolm
X. The pursuit of peace and justice has been sought after in almost every major
religion and culture. The meaning of peace and liberation within the Nation of
Islam is no different than any other oppressed or mistreated group of people.
However the way the Nation of Islam was said to market its strategy for peace and
justice of mostly African Americans was by preaching violent and even oppressive
behavior to its followers. Leaders such as Louis Farrakhan and Malcolm Xwere the
front runners of the controversial undertone of the Nation of Islam during the civil

Alienation, A Theme in John SteinbeckВґs The Grapes of
Wrath
Grapes of Wrath: Alienation
In Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck reveals the assumptions and moral values of
Californian society in the 1930s by narrating the tale through the eyes of Tom Joad.
Tom and his family are evicted from their homes by the bank because the drought had
diminished the profitability of the land. They join numerous other migrants on Route
66, hoping for a better life in California. Both the rich Californian landowners and the
Californian workers alienate the migrant families, showing a blatant disregard for
human life in pursuit of preserving their own self interests.
Migrant families were subject to being alienated and called names. The first time Tom
hears the term Okie he asks someone what it means, and he learns that, Okie use ta
mean you was from Oklahoma. Now it means you re a dirty son of a bitch. Okie
means you re scum (Page chapter 18). This quote shows the hatred Californians had
for the migrant families who were looking for a new start. Okie became a derogatory
term used by Californians who feared that the people migrating from the Midwest
would take their jobs. Californians alienated and dehumanized migrants by labeling
them. The implication that a migrant is a dirty son of a bitch further serves to
dehumanize migrants by relating them to filthy street dogs. The word scum is also
demeaning, and by comparing migrants to dirt Steinbeck shows that Californians
thought that the migrants were worthless. Paranoid Californians did
Costs Of Production And Their Short Run Influences
Costs of production and their short run influences
Total Cost
The total cost of production of Sony s new product is the addition of both fixed and
variable costs. Fixed costs are assets within a business that are not used up or sold
during the typical production course e.g. buildings and machinery. Variable costsare
costs that fluctuate in time with the production output or sales revenue of a company
such as Sony e.g. raw material and labour costs. Figure 1.1 shows how the total cost
is composed of both fixed and variable costs.
Figure 1.1 Total Cost of Diagram
The influence that total cost has on short run production cause variable costs to
increase or decrease mirroring the total costs that incur as total costs are equal to
variable costs. As production increases also, total costs will persist to increase as
well. This occurs due to the fact that an increase/decrease in variable costs is required
when raw materials, output and/or labour increases/decreases.
Average Cost
The average costs of production of Sony s new product is the total costs (the
addition of fixed and variable costs) divided by the output which is the quantity of
goods or services that are produced during the production run.
The influence that average cost has on short run production is that when the output
of a production run is small the average cost will be higher as the fixed costs are
spread across a small number of units of output. Therefore as the production
Lao-Tzu And The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
While Thoughts From The Tao te Ching by Lao Tzu and The Prince by Niccolo
Machiavelli are both pieces of work that serve as ground rules or guidelines for a
ruler on how to rule a country, the two authors prepositions vary tremendously. One
author takes on a susceptible viewpoint, while another takes on a much more
conservative outlook. There are many factors as to why they differ so much. Even
though Lao Tzu and Machiavelli both provide intricate structures as to how rulers
should run their state, there are extreme differences between the two. The most
obvious difference between Lao Tzu and Machiavelli are their moral perspectives
and beliefs. Lao Tzu is very mellow and easygoing person. He believes that the best
government is one that runs itself, in the sense that the government should have
very little control. Lao Tzu is very passive. In his section titled Thoughts of the Tao
te Ching, Lao Tzu says, The world is sacred. It can t be improved. If you tamper
with it, you ll ruin it. If you treat it like an object, you ll lose it (208). This quote
strengthens the claim that Lao Tzu believes in a government with little control.
This is most accredited to his religion. He is a person of the Tao, and he is very
reliant on the Master , or the god of Taoism. He believes that the Master controls
everything, yet does nothing in the sense that people hardly are aware that the
Master exists. Because of his knowledge of the Tao and the expectations of the

The Youngest US President ever to Take Office
John F. Kennedy was voted into office during the election of 1960. To date, Kennedy
is the youngest person to be elected President. Surprisingly, at the start of the
campaign, Kennedy was a long shot to win the Democratic nomination. Without a
distinguished presence in the political world and the stigma of being Roman
Catholic, Kennedy had a lot of ground to conquer. In not just politics, but society,
religion is and was a controversial issue. Kennedy, who was Catholic, struggled
against critics who were anti Catholicism. It was often insisted that Kennedy would
turn to the pope for orders and therefore run our country based upon the Church.
Kennedy overcame this obstacle by reassuring voters he would not act according to

As a nation that is expected to be the leaders of other nations, he would not settle

Soviet Union was far ahead of the United States in its space program. With Project
Apollo, Kennedy was determined to play catch up and asked congress to invest
more that twenty two billion dollars into the project. The end goal was to have an
American man on the moon before the end of the decade. Neil Armstrong was that
man in 1969. Not only was the Soviet Union viewed as a threat with their space
program being more advance, but they also had nuclear missile sites being built.
An American spy plane secretly photographed evidence that both Cuba and the
Soviet Union were building nuclear missile sites. President Kennedy remained
collected and directed that a naval blockade was placed around Cuba which would
prevent the Soviets from obtaining more military supplies. On the brink of what
could have been a nuclear war, there was an agreement made, the Soviets agreed to
dismantle their weapons sites in exchange for a pledge from the United States not to
invade Cuba. Tension slowly began to lessen as time passed and the agreement
remained respected. Another one of Kennedy s problems he was confronted during
Presidency was racial discrimination. In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that
segregation in public schools would be no longer

Examples Of Giles Corey
The Salem Witchcraft outbreak of 1692 has intrigued and fascinated historians for
nearly 400 years. Every major player of the outbreaks in 1692 Massachusetts has
been scrupulously analyzed and studied, with different views coming from
different historians. One of these key players in the witchcraft outbreak was Giles
Corey, a well to do farmer and churchgoer. At age 81, he was known for being a good
farmer, but a slow learner and a simple man. In The Devil in Massachusetts, author
Marion L. Starkey paints a picture of Giles Corey as a victim, and that it was because
he believed the word of a pack of lying girls, (205) that he testified against his wife
Martha, as well as getting himself pressed to death in September of 1692. This essay

When the outbreak first began, Giles wanted to watch the examinations and trials
of the accused witches, but his wife wanted him to have nothing to do with them.
She took the saddle from his horse and hid it (Starkey 64) because his life had been
punctuated by lawsuits and worse (64). When his wife Martha began to publicly
question the accusations and credibility of the young girls, she herself was
accused as a witch and brought in for trial. Giles Corey was brought in to testify
against his wife and, being a great blundering husband (Starkey 75), attempted to
provide as many facts to the judges as possible, not understanding the power of his
words. Thinking back to when his wife denied him from witnessing the
examinations, Giles started to wonder if the girl s accusations might actually have
some truth behind them. In Giles Corey v. Martha Corey, he recounts several
examples of how his wife behaved in ways he could not explain. His first example
was one night when she asked him to go to bed, I told I would go to prayr. when I
went to prayer I could nott utter my desires w th any sense, not open my mouth to

Gabriel Frankl and Elsa Frankl from Marovia. He was the second born in a family

This led to his refining of his particular brand of Viennese psychology. He earned his

His family and friends are also kept as prisoners in the prison (Frankl, 2004). They
suffer so much in the prison because of the mistreatment by the prison guards. In the
prison, life is harsh and many people do not cope with the conditions. In the story,
the life of the prisoners is described to have three phases that include
depersonalization, apathy and disillusionment. Depersonalization is experienced
when the prisoners are liberated and do not seem to recognize their presence in the
prison. They enjoyed their liberty in the prison as they could eat and sleep only.
Deformation comes in when they are subjected to suffering and mistreatment in
the prisons. This is depicted by the fact that these prisoners are mistreated by other
prisoners and the prison wardens. Disillusionment is also depicted as the life that
the prisoners experienced after prison. They faced rejection from the outside
world and did not face the kind of life they expected to face when in prison. The story
is all about the experience Victor Frankl had in his life. It expounds on his life in
prison and back to the world where he chases his dream and achieves his goal in life.
He pursued his career and got married later.
Frankl arrived at the conclusion that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to
which man can aspire when he was in prison. This was during his suffering in prison.

Some bombs open up (Multi dispensers), and other eject out the submunitions (Single
dispensers).
Submunitions are classified as bomblets, grenades, or mines. They are small
explosive filled or chemical filled items designed for saturation coverage of a large
area that can expand from several football fields to hundreds of acres. They may be
antipersonnel (APERS), antimateriel (AMAT), antitank (AT), dual purpose (DP),
incendiary, or chemical.
Most submunitions are used to destroy an enemy/vehicle in place (impact
submunitions). They are designed to go off when they hit the ground.
For example, the ball type submunitions used during the Laotian conflict are called
APERS. They are very small (of the size of a tennis ball) and are delivered by the
hundreds for each bomb. If not detonated upon impact, they will lie hidden like a
land mine, and will not blow up until pressure is put on it. When it hits the ground, a
small fragmentation ball shoots up and detonates about 6 feet above the ground.
The AMAT and/or AT submunitions are designed to destroy hard targets such as
vehicles and equipment. They are dispersed from an aircraft dropped dispenser and
function when they hit a target or the ground. The fin assembly stabilizes these
submunitions in flight so they hit their targets straight on. The submunitions are also
used to destroy hard targets such as vehicles and
Modern Art And Postmodernism
A Japanese postmodern artist Yayoi Kusama, had an art technique of drawing and
painting dots. Her art form was influenced by her psychological problems in which
she expressed herself in an artistic form of painting dots. Both literature arts and the
visual arts uses different techniques to express themselves whether it be modern or
postmodern. Postmodern art use a lot of different techniques to express themselves
and manipulate the audience in an entirely different way like how Kusama had
expressed herself in a different way than artists have previously done before.
Postmodernismstarted after WWII and used a happier and sometimes an ironic tone in
their creations. Modernismstarted in the 20th century and were sometimes difficult to
understand the pieces of art and writing. It is the departure of traditional arts and a
movement in the arts to create new styles and techniques. The new form of art often
causes conflict and sorts of negative reaction to those viewing because of its new art
form that questions many people. The new form of art are subjective and creates
different reactions that often tends to question what art really is in general. Both
modernism and postmodernism uses many of the similar authorial techniques but
uses different tones in the writings. Many of the authorial techniques they use are
imagism, fragmentation, motifs, mutations, and many other techniques to create an
effect.
Although modernism uses similar techniques as postmodernism, modernism tends
A Comparison Of The Three Punic Wars
The three Punic Wars was a series of battles fought between Carthage and Rome
that lasted almost a century from 264 BC to 149 BC. As Carthage had the leading
power of Western Mediterranean and Rome s control over the peninsula of Italy.
However, both of the two states had different intensions over the island of Sicily
leading to the battles of the Punic Wars that soon later ended in a total defeat for
Carthage. With the desire of controlling the island of Sicily, Carthage would still
have the dominance power over the Mediterranean and as for Rome, it would
strengthen its land defense policy and expand its Republic. In 264 BC, the first
Punic War started when Rome wanted to expand their Republic by taking control
of Sicily which at the time was under Carthage. Carthage had the advantage, as they
avoided land based battles and continued to fight using their strong navy. Rome,
however, had built their navy over time and developed strategies that allowed its
trained soldiers to take part in naval ship to ship battles. In the end, Rome had won
the first Punic War between Carthage in 249 BC. As a result, Carthage not only had
to surrender Sicily to the Romans but also signed a peace treaty agreeing to pay
tribute. In the second Punic War, there were three major battles that was fought in
the beginning between 218 BC to 202 BC. These battles were led by a great military
leader and son of the previous Carthage leader who is now in command, Hannibal.

Catcher In The Rye Analysis
An Alternate View In the novel the Catcher in the Rye, author J.D. Salinger writes
about the life of a 17 year old boy who drastically differs from the rest of the
teenager population because of his alternate point of view on life. This non typical
teenager with the name of Holden Caulfield has a negative perspective on
everything he and others do, and does not attempt to find the light in certain
situations. While teenagers may not attempt to find the best in a certain outcome,
they tend to have a positive outlook on specific things in their life. Holden appears
to only switch between 3 emotions throughout the book, and never gives anything
his all, or consideration. As a result of this, he does not act like a typical teenager
would. However, Holden does have a limited amount of traits that classify him as a
typical teenager: his need for connections to others and learning to be independent
on his own. He also has distinct traits that isolate him from the others, making him
out to be this negative, apathetic character. A typical teenager is someone who
conforms to what others are doing, but Salinger creates Holden to be a non typical
teenager who sees everything differently and executes what has to be done in his
own unique way. In the beginning of the book, Salinger writes Holden to be looking
down at the football game while he stands on the top of Thomsen Hill, watching and
taking pity on those who are attending the game. Holden observes, But you could hear

Mythos), Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke (author of 2001: A Space Odyssey
), Ray
Bradbury (author of the Martian Chronicles), Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of the
Tarzan, Mars, and Pellicidar series), Lester Dent (author of the Doc Savage series),
Walter Gibson (author of the Shadow series), Erle Stanley Gardner (author of the
Perry Mason novels), Robert Heinlein (author of Starship Troopers, Stranger in a
Strange Land), Robert E. Howard (author of the Conan stories), Robert Heinlein,
Daishell Hammett (author of the Maltese Falcon and the Thin Man), Steven Crane,
and Tennessee Williams. Such famous authors of great American literature took their
roots from these supposedly tawdry magazines.
Pulp magazines faded for a combination of reasons. The first reason was the
development of comic books as an alternative to the pulp magazines, drawing away
the juvenile group from the pulps. World War II paper shortages almost halted the
printing of the pulps. The development of the paperback book offered the population
high quality writing at a cheap price. Because of these reasons, eventually all the

Differences In The Outsiders Movie And Novel
The Outsiders movie and novel are both great. After finishing both I found out
they are very similar , but they also have some differences. The movie and novel
both share similarities that are very alike. For example , both have the same
characters , the church burns down , and the greasers and Socs both hate each
other. They might have these major similarities ,but they have a lot of very minor
differences. In The Outsiders there are a lot of similarities . For example , the
church that Ponyboy and Johnny stayed in burnt down . The story takes place in
Tulsa Oklahoma . They might be similar , but they have some differences as well . A
major differenceis that in the book the greasers live on the East
Multiculturalism in the United States Essay examples
Multiculturalism in the United States The side in opposition to multiculturalism
firmly believes that it weakens America by keeping immigrants from adequately
assimilating to the core values of America s Anglo Protestant identity. This side
believes that multiculturalism weakens the social bond of the United States by
denying that immigrants need to assimilate to the language and values of the country
s dominant culture. The rise of non English speaking communities is seen as a
detrimental factor in the goal of achieving unity in American culture. Opponents state
that immigrants coming to the United States must always lose their previous culture
from their country of origin, to be able to completely assimilate to and fully embrace

Elan Journo explains in his article, Multiculturalisms War on Education :
Multiculturalism seeks to obliterate the value of a free, industrialized civilization by
declaring that such a civilization is no better than primitive tribalism. We are opposed
to this Some opponents argue that multiculturalism is actually racism in disguise. In
their opinion, the meaning of multiculturalism is that an individual s identity and
personal worth are determined by ethnic/racial membership not by his own choices
and actions (Rand). This leads to the impression that a person s identity is determined
by skin color, and therefore people separate into ethnic groups. Those in opposition to
multiculturalism believe that college students have become racial separatists, that
they form self segregated dormitories and choose friends based on ethnicity. The
supporting side also believes that multiculturalism in education is an essential part of
college. Studies have found that appreciation for diversity is lacking on college
campuses. Evidence shows that among the growing tensions on college campuses,
multiculturalism remains the most unresolved issue on campus [in the US] today
(Bikson Law p. 91). Frequent campus reports of racially motivated hate crimes imply
that this remains a huge issue. Proponents
The Role of a Journalist
Role of Journalist Australian writer/journalist Karl Karus said it best when he said,
corruption is worse than prostitution. The latter might endanger the morals of an
individual, the former invariably endangers the morals of the entire country. For
decades, the United States has been one the most notable countries to come under fire
with reports of government corruption. During the dawn of the new millennium the
Transparency Corruption began to publish their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI),
a culmination of assessments and opinion surveys by experts which rank countries
based on their perceived corruption. In 2012, the U.S ranked 19 out of 174
countries. Its often questioned how this report would vary had it been published
decades before when whistle blowers and journalist were striving to shed light onto
government corruption in the 50s , 60s, and 70s. Throughout the history of the
United States its been the responsibility of journalist and whistle blowers to report
dishonesty and injustice created by those in power. In a letter to Virginia statesman
Edward Carrington, President Thomas Jefferson shared his views on the press and
government. The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very
first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we
should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government,
I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. Its been this

Small Town Essay. My Village Essay Essay on My Village for Students and Children in ...

  • 1. Small Town Essay Crafting an essay on the theme of a "Small Town" is no simple feat. At first glance, one might assume that delving into the nuances of a small community would be straightforward, perhaps even easier than tackling broader subjects. However, the challenge lies in capturing the essence of these seemingly tranquil locales, where every cobblestone and every face holds a story. To begin with, small towns are multifaceted microcosms. It's not just about describing the quaint charm or picturesque landscapes; it's about peeling back the layers to reveal the intricate social fabric that binds the community. This requires a keen eye for observation and an ability to decipher the unspoken connections between residents. Moreover, the task extends beyond mere portrayal. A successful essay on a small town demands an understanding of the subtle dynamics that shape its identity. One must navigate through the complexities of local traditions, interpersonal relationships, and the shared history that often forms the backbone of these close-knit societies. The writing process involves striking a delicate balance between romanticizing the simplicity of small-town life and acknowledging the challenges that may lurk beneath its idyllic surface. It's about capturing the paradoxical nature of these communities, where everyone knows everyone, yet secrets linger in the whispers of the wind. Additionally, the challenge lies in avoiding clichГ©s and stereotypes that often plague discussions about small towns. It requires presenting a fresh perspective that transcends the conventional narratives, offering readers an authentic glimpse into the heart and soul of these often overlooked corners of the world. In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of a small town is a formidable task that demands a blend of observational prowess, cultural sensitivity, and narrative finesse. It's an exercise in weaving a tapestry of words that does justice to the complexity and beauty of these miniature societies. If you find yourself grappling with the intricacies of such a topic or any other essay, there are resources available to assist you. Wandering stoically through life, looking for some natural progression, Frederic lets one circumstance lead him to the next. At first, Frederic exhibits the hedonistic aspirations of a college fraternity pledge, motivated only by drinking and sex. He has an epiphany of his feelings towards her then, but when I could not see her there I was feeling lonely and hollow (41). The affair becomes serious when Frederic is wounded at the front and sent to the hospital in Milan. Catherine is his nurse and offers him direct care. She has previously been initiated into the cruelties and absurdities of life through her previous loss. As a type of survival tactic Catherine instantly falls in love with Frederic at the hospital (Spanier). He is wounded but alive, which is enough for her. Frederic adds his love of Catherine to his list of coping methods as he describes, I was not made to think, I was made to eat. My God, yes. Eat and drink and sleep with Catherine (233). He notes the internal change when, after deserting, he is riding in a train car with a group of

I am a person that takes sports very seriously in my life. I enjoy playing sports as much as I enjoy watching them on television. It is a man of history who is said to be the Father of American Literature. Although there are other great authors of this time, Mark Twain used many different styles of writing within his work that helped to create the mastermind of a writer he once was and so that it would live on to be talked about today. Twain used a very relaxed style of writing that hadn t been used by any other author during this point in time. With his writing of amazing stories about Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, the mighty Mississippi River, and many more Mark Twain created adventure for the average American with his humor, attention to details, and the realism he used. • 8. What Role Does Diophantus Play In The Evolution Of Algebra Algebra is the basis of all math and its advancement took place in three major steps. The first stage of algebra is rhetorical algebra dating back to before 275 BCE. Rhetorical algebra was a form of algebra that contained no symbols so to them +, , and*, did not exist. It was usually explained orally or written on scribes. They were able to do things such as find squad and cubed roots, solve linear equations, and explain fractions. As well as recognizing irrational numbers and identifying that quadratics had two answers. The next phase in algebras evolution was Syncopated math. This was most popularly used between 275 BCE 1600. Diophantus played a crucial role in this stage by being the first to develop algebraic notations and abbreviations.
  • 9. Building Consent Application For Demolition Introduction In this report I will examine a reflection on a building consent application for the demolition of Riverside one as called or Shell Store , which is a non listed building in a conservation area, and is part of the restoration project of the lost 19th century Lower Barrier ditch of Chatham Lines. This is in the perspective view of the partial and broader regeneration of the town environments and riverfront. The decision of demolition of this listed building, was taken from an idealistic Masterplan organized by Medway Council in 2010 for the restoration of the Chatham Gun Wharf site, in respect of broader communal benefits, equally physical and intellectual, to the nationally important historic defences. The strategic location of the barrier ditch at Gun Wharf provides the southern point of entry to the militarized zone and together with the neighbouring site of Fort Amherst, provide the gateway to Chatham Dockyard s heritage area. Since smart phones, and the Internet has become such a huge deal, buying CD s is not as common as it was anymore, which is why live performance is where a lot of the money is made. The reason behind this is because a lot of the artists/bands fan bases much prefer watching them live as to listening to an edited, highly compressed electronic version. The live performance area consists of many different people with many different roles in the music industry, which are booking, planning, managing, promoting, setting up and performing. All roles in live performance are all just as important as each other and cannot be done without one another. When Soc helps him reach enlightenment and he finds himself dead (in an out of body experience), on the floor of a cave on the top of the mountain he had climbed right before with Socrates and realizes that his life, too, had been an illusion, a problem, nothing more than a humorous incident when Consciousness had forgotten itself . His out of body experiences are fundamental for the outcome of his journey, they allow him to look at his weaknesses and learn about himself, understand that he has a long way to go. Parables throughout the book provide Dan images and ideas for meditation or introduce him to a new change in his journey. The moment when he understands Socrates is only towards the end, when his teacher goes in the mountains to rescue and help him with his final task, climbing the mountain, symbol for his ego and adversities. He remembers a parable he had never understood before that moment: A saintly woman was walking along the edge of a cliff. Several hundred feet below, she saw a dead mother lion, surrounded by crying cubs. Without hesitation, she leaped off the cliff so that they would have something to eat . This shows what Socrates would figuratively be willing to do to help Dan growing up. Sometimes one thinks they know their friends, but they don t really understand how

Alienation, A Theme in John SteinbeckВґs The Grapes of Wrath Grapes of Wrath: Alienation In Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck reveals the assumptions and moral values of Californian society in the 1930s by narrating the tale through the eyes of Tom Joad. Tom and his family are evicted from their homes by the bank because the drought had diminished the profitability of the land. They join numerous other migrants on Route 66, hoping for a better life in California. Both the rich Californian landowners and the Californian workers alienate the migrant families, showing a blatant disregard for human life in pursuit of preserving their own self interests. Migrant families were subject to being alienated and called names. The first time Tom hears the term Okie he asks someone what it means, and he learns that, Okie use ta mean you was from Oklahoma. Now it means you re a dirty son of a bitch. Okie means you re scum (Page chapter 18). This quote shows the hatred Californians had for the migrant families who were looking for a new start. Okie became a derogatory term used by Californians who feared that the people migrating from the Midwest would take their jobs. Californians alienated and dehumanized migrants by labeling them. The implication that a migrant is a dirty son of a bitch further serves to dehumanize migrants by relating them to filthy street dogs. The word scum is also demeaning, and by comparing migrants to dirt Steinbeck shows that Californians thought that the migrants were worthless. Paranoid Californians did

Fixed costs are assets within a business that are not used up or sold during the typical production course e.g. buildings and machinery. Variable costsare costs that fluctuate in time with the production output or sales revenue of a company such as Sony e.g. raw material and labour costs. One author takes on a susceptible viewpoint, while another takes on a much more conservative outlook. There are many factors as to why they differ so much. Even though Lao Tzu and Machiavelli both provide intricate structures as to how rulers should run their state, there are extreme differences between the two. The most obvious difference between Lao Tzu and Machiavelli are their moral perspectives and beliefs. Lao Tzu is very mellow and easygoing person. He believes that the best government is one that runs itself, in the sense that the government should have very little control. Lao Tzu is very passive. In his section titled Thoughts of the Tao te Ching, Lao Tzu says, The world is sacred. It can t be improved. If you tamper with it, you ll ruin it. If you treat it like an object, you ll lose it (208). This quote strengthens the claim that Lao Tzu believes in a government with little control. This is most accredited to his religion. He is a person of the Tao, and he is very reliant on the Master , or the god of Taoism. He believes that the Master controls everything, yet does nothing in the sense that people hardly are aware that the Master exists. • 34. Examples Of Giles Corey The Salem Witchcraft outbreak of 1692 has intrigued and fascinated historians for nearly 400 years. Every major player of the outbreaks in 1692 Massachusetts has been scrupulously analyzed and studied, with different views coming from different historians. One of these key players in the witchcraft outbreak was Giles Corey, a well to do farmer and churchgoer. At age 81, he was known for being a good farmer, but a slow learner and a simple man. In The Devil in Massachusetts, author Marion L. Starkey paints a picture of Giles Corey as a victim, and that it was because he believed the word of a pack of lying girls, (205) that he testified against his wife Martha, as well as getting himself pressed to death in September of 1692. When the outbreak first began, Giles wanted to watch the examinations and trials of the accused witches, but his wife wanted him to have nothing to do with them. She took the saddle from his horse and hid it (Starkey 64) because his life had been punctuated by lawsuits and worse (64). When his wife Martha began to publicly question the accusations and credibility of the young girls, she herself was accused as a witch and brought in for trial. Giles Corey was brought in to testify against his wife and, being a great blundering husband (Starkey 75), attempted to provide as many facts to the judges as possible, not understanding the power of his words. Thinking back to when his wife denied him from witnessing the examinations, Giles started to wonder if the girl s accusations might actually have some truth behind them. In Giles Corey v. Martha Corey, he recounts several examples of how his wife behaved in ways he could not explain. His first example was one night when she asked him to go to bed, I told I would go to prayr. when I went to prayer I could nott utter my desires w th any sense, not open my mouth to speake, (Boyer and Nissenbaum 259 260), but that once she came towards him, he was able to speak and pray

Some bombs open up (Multi dispensers), and other eject out the submunitions (Single dispensers). Submunitions are classified as bomblets, grenades, or mines. They are small explosive filled or chemical filled items designed for saturation coverage of a large area that can expand from several football fields to hundreds of acres. They may be antipersonnel (APERS), antimateriel (AMAT), antitank (AT), dual purpose (DP), incendiary, or chemical. Most submunitions are used to destroy an enemy/vehicle in place (impact submunitions). They are designed to go off when they hit the ground. For example, the ball type submunitions used during the Laotian conflict are called APERS. They are very small (of the size of a tennis ball) and are delivered by the hundreds for each bomb. If not detonated upon impact, they will lie hidden like a land mine, and will not blow up until pressure is put on it. When it hits the ground, a small fragmentation ball shoots up and detonates about 6 feet above the ground. The AMAT and/or AT submunitions are designed to destroy hard targets such as vehicles and equipment. They are dispersed from an aircraft dropped dispenser and function when they hit a target or the ground. The fin assembly stabilizes these submunitions in flight so they hit their targets straight on. The submunitions are also used to destroy hard targets such as vehicles and

Salinger writes about the life of a 17 year old boy who drastically differs from the rest of the teenager population because of his alternate point of view on life. This non typical teenager with the name of Holden Caulfield has a negative perspective on everything he and others do, and does not attempt to find the light in certain situations. While teenagers may not attempt to find the best in a certain outcome, they tend to have a positive outlook on specific things in their life. Holden appears to only switch between 3 emotions throughout the book, and never gives anything his all, or consideration. As a result of this, he does not act like a typical teenager would. However, Holden does have a limited amount of traits that classify him as a typical teenager: his need for connections to others and learning to be independent on his own. He also has distinct traits that isolate him from the others, making him out to be this negative, apathetic character. A typical teenager is someone who conforms to what others are doing, but Salinger creates Holden to be a non typical teenager who sees everything differently and executes what has to be done in his own unique way. In the beginning of the book, Salinger writes Holden to be looking down at the football game while he stands on the top of Thomsen Hill, watching and taking pity on those who are attending the game. Holden observes, But you could hear them all

  • 43. Impact of Pulp Magazines on American Culture Essay Impact of Pulp Magazines on American Culture The story is worth more than the paper it is printed on. Frank Munsey s words symbolized the history of the pulp magazine. Frank Munsey started the pulp magazine craze with his first magazine, the Argosy, in 1896. The Argosy was a revamping of his children s magazine, the Golden Argosy, shifting its focus from children to adults. The Argosy offered large amounts of fiction for a low price, because these stories would be printed on cheap pulpwood scraps, thus gaining the name pulp magazine . Such famous authors of great American literature took their roots from these supposedly tawdry magazines. Pulp magazines faded for a combination of reasons. The first reason was the development of comic books as an alternative to the pulp magazines, drawing away the juvenile group from the pulps. World War II paper shortages almost halted the printing of the pulps. The development of the paperback book offered the population high quality writing at a cheap price. Because of these reasons, eventually all the pulps

Elan Journo explains in his article, Multiculturalisms War on Education : Multiculturalism seeks to obliterate the value of a free, industrialized civilization by declaring that such a civilization is no better than primitive tribalism. We are opposed to this Some opponents argue that multiculturalism is actually racism in disguise. In their opinion, the meaning of multiculturalism is that an individual s identity and personal worth are determined by ethnic/racial membership not by his own choices and actions (Rand). This leads to the impression that a person s identity is determined by skin color, and therefore people separate into ethnic groups. Those in opposition to multiculturalism believe that college students have become racial separatists, that they form self segregated dormitories and choose friends based on ethnicity. The supporting side also believes that multiculturalism in education is an essential part of college. Studies have found that appreciation for diversity is lacking on college campuses. Evidence shows that among the growing tensions on college campuses, multiculturalism remains the most unresolved issue on campus [in the US] today (Bikson Law p. 91). The latter might endanger the morals of an individual, the former invariably endangers the morals of the entire country. For decades, the United States has been one the most notable countries to come under fire with reports of government corruption. During the dawn of the new millennium the Transparency Corruption began to publish their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), a culmination of assessments and opinion surveys by experts which rank countries based on their perceived corruption. In 2012, the U.S ranked 19 out of 174 countries. Its often questioned how this report would vary had it been published decades before when whistle blowers and journalist were striving to shed light onto government corruption in the 50s , 60s, and 70s. Throughout the history of the United States its been the responsibility of journalist and whistle blowers to report dishonesty and injustice created by those in power. In a letter to Virginia statesman Edward Carrington, President Thomas Jefferson shared his views on the press and government. The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.
