I Have a Rendezvous With Death- Alan Seeger
I Have a Rendezvous with Death written by Alan Seeger works primarily as an expression of
differentiating between the conventional view of death, versus the author s intake. All elements of this
poem rhyme scheme, personification, diction and imagery work to this effect. With the aid of these
elements, the author is able to enlighten his readers that even though foreseeable and capricious, death
is not something that we should feared; rather we should come to terms that it is an inevitable part of
life and perhaps even anticipate it.
To begin analyzing this poem and its nature, we first must understand the context and time period in
which it was written. Alan Seeger was twenty six when World War One broke out in Europe. Due to

It is also debatable that spring in addition to death, spring is being personified. In the seasons, spring is
something longed for and vastly anticipated. In this instance the narrator states, When Spring comes
back with rustling shade/ and apple blossoms fill the air ... I have a rendezvous with death . (5 7). This
is a great illustration in which the author uses juxtaposition, by placing death and spring side by side
in order to sharply compare and contrast them. In turn this creates a sharp contrasts between the
unpredicted, sudden end of a life, in a disputable barricade, (2) versus the much anticipated spring,
which would symbolize happiness, life and prosperity. This initiates a train of thought from the reader,
perhaps the end of life is not quite as foreboding to the author as we often expect. This is exemplified
again when the author mentions his rendezvous with death, and the coming of spring, When Spring
brings back blue days and fair (6).
Diction is employed thoroughly in order to direct the connotations of the reader towards his views on
death and to evoke contradicting meanings. This creates almost an emotive tone within the calming
sound of the poem if it were to be read aloud. In turn this again demonstrates calmness and peace next
to a generally disagreeable situation (death). For instance this is demonstrated with the recurrence of
the line, I have a rendezvous with Death. The word, rendezvous coming

were still playing but were told to stop and put their handicaps back on. During all of this Hazel was
watching it on the TV and George went to the kitchen to get a beer when Harrison was shot so when
he came back in the living room Hazel was crying and he asked her what happened but she could not
remember so they just went on with life not knowing what happened. Despite the effort Harrison was
dead and there was absolutely no hope in being free from society and the government because no one

Michael Bruce s A Man Of Logic
Bruce had always preferred wandering to the confines of four walls. Although, if SHEILD had their
way, General Ross in particular, he would ve been imprisoned a long time ago. Somewhere where the
sun doesn t shine. Locked away, and probably left to rot, in one of SHIELD s many undisclosed
correctional facilities. But there was something to be said about sleeping beneath the stars. To be
reminded how insignificant you really were. A man of logic, philosophy had never been a fascination
for Bruce. His mind prone to working out problems from a scientific standpoint than an emotional
one. But left with time to spare over the years, Bruce came to realize how ironic his life has been. At
how better off the world would have been if his father had succeeded in killing him all those years
ago. Bruce deserved nothing less than the cave he caged himself in. Spending a great deal with
himself had left Dr. Banner questioning his existence, more so in the light of recent events. And
already in a struggle for his own identity, philosophy only twisted his sense of insignificancy.
So it didn t seem possible that he d ever seen the stars again.
Self exile didn t stem from just one reason, but a number of them. Each one weaving in and out of
Banner s thoughts until he felt control slipping through his grasp. The Scarlet Witch had done more
than simply cast an illusion that killed dozens of people. She created in Bruce a sense of reproach, a
part of him second guessing his role in the

The Quality Of A Balance Scorecard
A balance scorecard is an instrument managers use to gauge performance based on significant
performance measures chosen by the manager. Each performance measure can be tailored to meet the
specific needs of any organization. According to Cardinaels and Veen Dirks, firms either have a list of
measures or groups of measures separated into categories to evaluate performance. There are four
common categories that are used to group and describe the different performance measures. The four
categories are financial, customer, internal business, and learning and growth (Cardinaels M.G. van
Veen Dirks, 2010). Cardinaels and Veen Dirks said the financial category concentrates on financial
data like sales margin percentages and sales growth per store. The customer perspective concentrates
on repetitive sales and customer satisfaction. Internal business concentrates on returns to suppliers and
the amount of orders completed. Learning and growth concentrates on the development of employees
how happy employees are with their job. Customer, internal business, and learning and growth
measures are considered to be non financial measures (Cardinaels M.G. van Veen Dirks, 2010).
According to Cardinaels and Veen Dirks, placing performance measures into categories help the
reader make decisions by being able to focus on individual areas rather than each individual measure
to make an overall decision on the performance of the organization as a whole. One good thing about

The Great Gatsby thesis statement
Abstract The Great Gatsby is written by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story takes place
in the roaring twenties . The characters in the novel have dreams and goals and not one dream ends
well. That is why my thesis statement is: The Great Gatsby is really about unattainable dreams. The
dreams I am discussing is Gatsby´s American dream, Daisy s dream and Nick s dream. The dreams are
based on the love story between Daisy and Gatsby. The final piece in Gatsby s American dream would
be if he got Daisy to wed him. Daisy dreams of Gatsby but chooses between him and her current
husband Tom. Nick wants Gatsby s life to be a happy life and he cares a lot about him. His dream is
for the story to end well. When Daisy does not choose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wishes that Gatsby s life should contain a happy ever after. There are a lot of dreams in the book
but I want to distinguish these three main dreams and how none of them gets fulfilled. Gatsby s
American dream The first dream that does not get fulfilled is the one of Gatsby. He starts off as an
underprivileged boy and struggles his way to the top. We make his acquaintance when he is on the top
of his life. He is enjoying his big house and his vast wealth. The one thing he cannot have is his lovely
Daisy. Gatsby s story reflects the classical American dream: Anyone can make anything of
himself/herself with just elbow grease, spirit and a whole lot of confidence. Jay loves Daisy and,
sadly, she is the one thing which he cannot procure to his perfect life . His wealth is shown clearly, for
instance when he throws huge parties just to have the chance of meeting or seeing Daisy. This
behavior is not feasible if you do not have that kind of money which leads us to the conclusion that he
is wealthy. The symbol that portrays the American dream is the green light. The light symbolizes
wealth but also Daisy, the latter because there is a green light at the end of Daisy´s dock. He reaches
out for it just like he reaches out for his dream. His material world reflects Daisy. Daisy is sometimes
a symbol of the American dream. Her voice is full of money... That was it. I d never understood
before. It was full of money that was the inexhaustible

order to make sure all relevant information was included, to check for grammar and spelling mistakes

Argumentative Essay On Mexican Migrant Workers
The phenomenal growth farming, minding, railroad construction, and commercial fishing all have a
story of transnational families and shattered dreams. With the coming of the Mexican Revolution in
1910, many mexicans fled north to the United States in order to escape the bloodshed in search of new
lives. Sadly their dream for a better life did not come true. Migrant workers work for low wages in
extreme conditions such as extreme heat, discomfort, and danger, as well as struggling to have a stable
life for their families. The disastrous great depression left many people unemployed. As a result, a
large number of caucasian people took over many migrant workers jobs in California. This left many
Mexicans and Filipinos desperate and willing to do anything for money. Farm workers were often
unpaid and were denied the right to unionize, a right that all other American workers enjoyed. Migrant
workers are from different ethnicities such as Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Europeans, but most of
the population is made up of Mexican migrant workers. Migrant workers lived a very harsh work
environment as well as a harsh society interactions. Mexican farm workers were offered a legally
binding work contract, but the majority suffered gross abuses of their labor rights and racial
discrimination. Migrant workers have always played a vital role in the US economy, so they should
not be treated as illegal or undeserving individuals. People have always harassed migrant workers and

Criminal Justice System Essay
1. Some developments in American policing and the criminal justice system during the colonial period
that were influenced by the English police experience were the idea of self defense and protecting
yourself (p.9). The United States had a sheriff who was important to the police force, just like the
English. In the U.S the sheriffs were paid more like the thief takers, which were paid fees for each
arrest they made (p.9). During the Colonial period they used the English s idea of constables and night
watchmen, which was similar to the watch and ward (p.9). In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
they had constables and watchmen just like the English at first. Then the United states took the
English s idea of creating their own police department. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sir Robert Peel was an important person who had a significant influence on development and shape of
the twentieth century American policing. He drafted the first police bill, the Act for Improving the
Police in and near the Metropolis. Once Parliament passed the act in 1829, then the first large scale,
uniformed, organized, paid, civil police force in London was formed (p. 6). A second important person
was Henry Fielding and his half brother, Sir John Fielding. They laid the foundation for the first
modern police force. They went around to pawn shops and asked the owners to notify if stolen
property was brought into the pawnshops. The Fielding s came up with the idea of the first official
crime report, which we use today (p. 6). The third important person was Stephen Austin. He hired a
dozen bodyguards to protect the Texicans from the Native Americans and bandits. They were
officially named the Texas Rangers. The Texas Rangers became the first United States state police
agency (p. 16). The fourth important people were the thief takers. The thief takers were private
citizens who got paid for every criminal they arrested and got off of the streets. They were paid for
every conviction they made. They helped get the bad highwayman off of the streets (p.

Compare And Contrast The Book And Book
Quoting Joseph Conrad s famous statement as a storyteller My task which I am trying to achieve is, by
the powers of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel it is, before all, to make to see.
Sixteen years later, D.W Griffith, a filmmaker echoes the same thoughts The task I m trying to achieve
is above all to make you see . George Bluestone s Novels into Film claims that between the percepts
of the visual image and the concept of the mental image lies the root difference between two media. It
is true that a novel and film are both raw form of artistic creativity and it helps us to see a whole new
world or imagination. However what is written and what is on screen, there will always be a

It must be similar. In The Company of Wolves they seems to believe that werewolves are evil. The
narrator mentions that the wolf is carnivore incarnate it is rather like a machine function to murder and

clear that there is no point pitying the human side of werewolves as they chose it themselves and it is
through the child s pity that moves her to join the company of the wolves . In both text and films, the
themes being explored are sexuality and the loss of innocence. Which are told brilliantly in both forms

I m First Here About Ainslie Rachlin Model
2. Procrastination. That is one of my terrible habits that I would love to be able to change. My final
would be a great example to talk about when it comes to procrastination! Now, here I am doing my
final on Wednesday night at 10:43 p.m. I m first going to speak about Ainslie Rachlin model and how
if I had applied this model to my behavior, I wouldn t be in this predicament right now. Ainslie
Rachlin: focuses on the fact that the preference between smaller sooner and larger later rewards can
shift over time (Powell). With the Ainslie Rachlin model, it s described as the shift change of smaller
sooner and larger later. This is where I told myself I would be doing my final two days ago. I found
myself doing other things, such as working. That would be a reversal of preference . As the days went
by, the smaller sooner reward became imminent. I knew that when I finished this final I would
officially be done for the semester, you would think that would be a big enough reward to have done
my final early?  The Ainslie Rachlin model is based on the assumption that the value of the reward
is a hyperbolic function of its delay. In simple terms, what it means is that the delay for the curve for
the reward which is describes the relationship between reward value and time delay. Decreasing
delays producing larder and larder increments in value. In other words, the value of a reward increases
more and more sharply as delay decreases and reward becomes imminent (Powell)

What Was The Role Of Women In The 18th Century
The Women present during the time period 1650 1800 were definitely the unsung heroes who not only
revolutionized France, but also made several contributions to Western and several other societies.
Women made several contributions mainly in literature, politics, visual arts, and society. Women
during 18th century made a remarkable contribution to literature, which involved the philosophes
assisting Diderot in the creation of the Encyclopedie in France, which has 72,000 entries that involve a
wide variety of information on specific subjects such as political theory (Fiero, 144). Additionally,
Chatelet produced an annotated French translation of Newton s Principia which was regarded as a
monumental achievement (Fiero, 144). On the political spectrum, Mary Wollstonecraft, from Britain,
pushed for the equality of women by writing the Vindications of the Rights of Woman, which in turn,
challenged the female stereotypes made by misogynistic males and proved that women are equal to
men. Additionally, Wollstonecraft ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for French society to strive by holding meetings in salons where women would gather to talk about
several topics such as politics and science, which in turn, these women were given the French title of
philosophes and made it possible for Paris to be considered a center of intellectual life .
During the 17th and 18th century women also challenged the status of women in order to prove that
they are equals and should also be respected. As noted earlier, Mary

Overview Of Erikson s Psychosocial Model Of Development
Since the development of Erik Erikson s psychosocial model of development in the 1960s, it has
become one of the most widely used measurements for studying emotional and personality
development across the human lifespan (Dunkel Harbke, 2017). Erikson s model contains eight
developmental stages, beginning in infancy and progressing until old age, and as a person ages they
begin to pass through the stages, with a new psychological crisis arising at each stage (Svetina, 2014).
Whitbourne, Sneed and Sayer (2009) describe how the outcome of each crisis is met with identity
attainment and new personal adaptations (positive outcome), or with an incoherent identity (negative
outcome). Additionally, each new stage allows for the reassessment of previous achievements, and in
some cases, failures (Dunkel Harbke, 2017). Erikson s model is commonly recognised as a
developmental ladder each previous stage lays a foundation before an individual can progress toward
the next stage (Malone, Liu, Valliant, Rentz Waldinger, 2016). It is important to note that whilst they
are referred to as stages , they should be viewed as being on a continuum rather than fixed categories
(Dunkel Harbke, 2017). The current paper will focus on three key stages of Erikson s model industry
vs. inferiority, intimacy vs. isolation, and generativity vs. stagnation. Applying each to selected
characters from the 2003 romantic comedy Christmas film, Love Actually. This film follows the lives
of eight unique couples, each dealing with both their love lives and personal development.
Interestingly, each of the eight stories are loosely interrelated. The film picks up five weeks before
Christmas, playing out a weekly countdown to the annual holiday, concluding with an epilogue that
takes place a month after Christmas. Whilst the film follows eight couples, the current paper will only
focus on three individuals Sam, Sarah, and Billy Mack. Each of whom are in different stages of
Erikson s model. Erikson s theory of psychosocial development is suited to analyse this particular film
as each character, including ones beyond this analysis, are all in different stages and outcomes of the
model. It is this that allows for direct examples of how

The Black Religious Community, Gospel ( Christian ) Rap
To an entire segment of the Black religious community, Gospel (Christian) Rap has found its way to
the footsteps of the church. The rapid emergence of this music and its subculture has left the church
and clergy alike asking the question why? Especially since much of what I would call secular Rap is
off the hook these days. How so, do you ask? There is a surplus of gratuitous violence, and sexually
explicit Rap lyrics, that currently ride the airwaves and is uploaded into countless IPODs, MP3s, and
Myspace.com websites. And what should we say about the continual overexposure and repetitious
degradation of young Black women, half naked in booty shorts; subliminally suggesting to many that
to treat all women like bitches and hoe s is ok. It also seems to promote a certain image of street
machismo or hembra which suggests that adopting a pimp or criminal type lifestyle with a gold
jeweled cup filled to the rim with Remy Marty VSOP or Gin and juice is the ultimate form of fun, and
that true happiness is wrapped inside a Maybach Mercedes Benz with 24 inch rims and a house
worthy of a write up on MTV Cribs. Finally, this dream life would be nothing without mentioning the
bank account that can only be accessed while visiting the Cayman Islands. Hip hop is now a culture
much like the Beatnik or Hippie of yesteryear and now to include churches. Like those references,

Analysis Of Barbara Kingsolver s Flight Behavior
Climate change, also known as global warming, is one of the biggest environmental challenges
affecting the planet the world is getting warmer, and humans activity is primarily to blame. Climate
change is the leitmotif of Barbara Kingsolver s novel Flight Behavior. Set in Appalachia, rural
Tennessee, Flight Behavior tells the story of Dellarobia Turnbow a 28 year old unhappy housewife,
stuck in a marriage brought on by a teenage pregnancy. Dellarobia was on her way to commit adultery
when she stumbled on what she believed was an act of god a colony of monarch butterflies whose
migration flight was disrupted. Kingsolver uses monarch butterflies as a device to illustrate the
consequences of climate change. In the novel, Flight Behavior, ... Show more content on

Dellarobia has all these questions, yet the answers are always insufficient: too young, too late, why
now, why here. The word choice in this passage shows how distraught and confused Dellarobia is
about the phenomenon s occurring in her life. Diction such as Why the butterflies, why now. Why
here? This repetition creates a real emphasis, and adds to the mood of this passage of exasperation and
uncertainty. The author s tone is shared with Dellarobia. The tone is irritated and disgruntled. The
author uses diction and language to convey this tone. The sentence length has an immense effect on
the reader. This passage contains for the most part long sentences with the exception of the last few
sentences. The long sentences are used here to investigate the core nature of Dellarobia more
thoroughly; the short sentences, however, are used to pack more punch and emphasis compared to the
previous, more lengthy sentences. To amplify her writing, Kingsolver uses a simile in this passage.
She compares the word why with one silver dollar on the floor of a wishing well, begging to be
plucked up but strategically untouchable. In sublime language, Kingsolver is saying that everybody
wants to know the answer to the question why? but that that like a coin in a wishing well, the answer
is simply unattainable no matter how much one may want to

Buchi Emecheta and African Traditional Society Essay
Buchi Emecheta s literary terrain is the domestic experience of the female characters, and the way in
which these characters try to turn the table against the second class and slavish status to which they
are subjected either by their husbands or the male oriented traditions. Reading Buchi Emecheta
informs us of the ways fiction, especially women s writing, plays a role in constructing a world in
which women can live complete lives; a world that may provide women with opportunities for

(xii) Emecheta s first novels which are set in Nigeria, The Salve Girl, The Bride Price and The Joys of
Motherhood work like a double edged sword. On the one hand, they are portraits of female bondage
(Frank 749), describing African women in their total submergence and enslavement. On the other, they
depict the structures and institutions which empower women and increase their participation in the
socio political, economic and spiritual activities in their community. In these three novels she gives a
picture of women in contemporary society as well as those in the past. The realistic picture provided
by the writer destroys women s contentment with the present state of affairs while giving insights into
the strategies that enable women to survive the oppressions of patriarchal society. Two types of
women are presented in these novels: those that concede to oppression and domination of the
patriarchal society and those who try hard to exploit the existing institutions of their society for their
best. It is mainly in these three novels that the writer intends to show the positive possibilities offered
to women in the traditional African society which helps them have some degrees of authenticity and
also remind the readers of colonialism s responsibilities in depriving women of these rights and thus
aggravating the subjugation. In an Igbo society there are

Taking a Look at Inductive Interference
An example of inductive inference would be the assumption that if you meet someone in public and
they are nice, and you have no reason to judge the next person, then they will be nice as well.
Inductive inferences are an unconscious way to process events in a way that supports positive
morality; without inductive inferences, people would be left to deal with only truths and although the
truth is normally a good thing, it may not be best for everyone to know. With inductive inferences,
people can live their lives making positive assumptions which put the mind at ease versus knowing
negative things that can ultimately lead to overstress.
The previous example of inductive inference relies on SPI because the inference is based on your
perception thus far of the scenario; if your perception of random people is that they are nice, then per
the SPI, you can only assume the next person will be as well because it is the only information you
have.
Based solely on experience, one cannot be justified in accepting the SPI because they would not be
making a real inference; their experiences do not necessarily entail truth in their conclusion. One
would also not be justified on the basis of deductive inference because that method means that the
conclusion is only factual to the premises it was formed from; in other words, you can only assume
everyone will be nice if there are no mean people to begin with. Lastly, assuming SPI will always
yield a correct conclusion is also not

The Mining Of Marcellus Shale Industry
The Marcellus Shale Industry in Pennsylvania Despite it s long history of coal, oil, and gas
development, Pennsylvania has seemingly been overcome by the rapidity and scale of production
demonstrated with the recent boom of Marcellus Shale industry, which has companies, workers,
environmentalists, etc. flocking to its northern tier. However, controversy seems to have followed as
the economic criticism of the drilling industry is that it booms and then busts, generating few local
jobs and leaving little lasting economic benefit (Schwartz). Thus making it critically important not
only the economic impact, but also those of social, institutional and environmental now and in the
years to come ( Marcellus Shale ).
Marcellus Shale is geologically defined as a sedimentary rock that is located at least a mile below the
surface and developed approximately 380 million years ago, during Devonian times, in a region
referred to as the Appalachian Basin, which explains its prominence in the northeastern region of the
United States ( What ). But, more importantly, Marcellus is a specific example of natural gas that
contains a substantial concentration of methane, trapped in low permeability shale, which requires the
hydraulic fracturing or fracking ( Marcellus Formation ). The natural gas occurs within the Marcellus
Shale in several ways, including: the pore spaces of the shale, the vertical fractures that break through
the shale, and adsorbed on mineral grains and organic

Ben Hall was an Australian bushranger born on the 9th of May 1837 in Maitland, New South Wales.
He died on the 5th of May 1965 after being shot to death by police. He roamed an area of New South
Wales from Bathurst to Forbes. What makes Ben Hall different from many other bushrangers is that he
was never directly responsible for anyone s death. His parents were Benjamin Hall and Eliza Somers.
Both of them had been convicted for minor stealing offences and transported to New South Wales
from England. They married in 1834 and had multiple children. Ben was the fourth child. After his

Comparing Shintoism And Feuerbach s Definition Of Religion
Throughout history, a wide variety of differing cultures and religions have developed and created a
unique way of life for the people that practice them. One in particular is a Japanese tradition,
specifically Shintoism. The primary belief is that its followers must pray to the gods or their ancestors
in times of trouble in order to reach their own personal fulfillments. This religion demonstrates how
god assists those who ask for help, or in other words, gives them some sense of hope during rough
times. A statement about religion that relates to this is Ludwig Feuerbach definition of religion, God, I
have said, is the fulfiller, or the reality, of the human desires for happiness, perfection, and
immortality. By including this quote it develops a comparison between Shintoism belief and
Feuerbach s definition. Both which provide a deeper understanding of religions today. ... Show more

Shinto religion calls this other realm. Here is where both gods and spirits take action towards those

Essay on Picasso
Art represents beauty. It represents the soul and spirit of the artist. It s a form of communication that
the artist can use as a substitution for words. Art has flourished the world for thousands of years and it
has no intentions on stopping. One of quot;the most important figure s in modern art quot; (Selfridge,

us to see many abstract creations through his artwork alone. (Selfridge, 20) Born on October 25, 1881,
Picasso was a miracle right from the start. There were complications with birth and everyone was sure

Thematic Symbols In The Film Silence Of The Lambs
One of the most successful horror films of all time, Silence of the Lambs has always been something
of a mystery. Themes of government sponsored brainwashing in the creation of serial killers are so
expertly hidden in plain sight. It is for this reason that Silence of the Lambs may be considered one of
the most rebellious and thrilling movies ever made. Perhaps the first image people encountered, when
the movie premiered in 1991, was the poster. It shows Jodie Foster s face with a moth covering her
mouth. Her eyes, usually blue, are red. Close examination of the faux skull markings on the moth s
head, reveals the skull to be made up of seven naked women. The moth and its cousin the butterfly are

A convenience sample is made up of people who are easy to reach.
The main types of probability sampling methods are simple random sampling, stratified sampling,
cluster sampling, multistage sampling, and systematic random sampling. The key benefit of
probability sampling methods is that they guarantee that the sample chosen is representative of the
population. This ensures Simple random sampling. Simple random sampling refers to any sampling
method that has the following properties.
The population consists of N objects.
The sample consists of n objects.
If all possible samples of n objects are equally likely to occur, the sampling method is called simple
random sampling.
Stratified sampling. With stratified sampling, the population is divided into groups, based on some
characteristic. Then, within each group, a probability sample (often a simple random sample) is
selected. Cluster sampling. With cluster sampling, every member of the population is assigned to one,
and only one, group. Each group is called a cluster. A sample of clusters is chosen, using a probability
method (often simple random sampling). Only individuals within sampled clusters are surveyed.
Multistage sampling. With multistage sampling, we select a sample by using combinations of different
sampling methods. Systematic random sampling. With systematic random sampling, we create a list of
every member of the population. From the list, we randomly select the first sample element from the

The Shoelace By Charles Bukowski And Walking In The Blue
Literature is Insanity When it comes to literature, many students have difficulty trying to understand
the main reason the author wrote it. This is very evident in poems. Poems are verbal compositions
designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a specific and creative way. They are
characterized by the use of the way they are formatted and use literary techniques such as metaphors,
similes, rhyme, and personification. With the many rules and forms that poems can have, a lot of them
are hard to interpret. In this essay, I want to breakdown two poems meaning by comparing their
similar underlying message by the authors similar styles and experiences. The two poems are The
Shoelace by Charles Bukowski and Walking in the Blue by Robert Lowell. The Shoelace and Walking
in the Blue are both poems that deal with the topic of understanding insanity. In Charles Bukowski s
The Shoelace, he discusses the topic in a more typical and conventional view of insanity. While on the
other hand, Robert Lowell focuses on the view of insanity from the view of noticeable and rough
familiarities in his poem Walking in the Blue.
The definition of insanity is the state of being mentally ill and a direct cause of insanity is mainly
stress. Charles Bukowski s poem revives the known feeling of losing it and going into a state of
madness. Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his works. He used his poetry
to show the wickedness of urban life and the oppression in the

Humans have been innovators, from the first shapers of stone and wood into crude implements, to the

Today innovation is based not only on the challenges, problems, and needs but also on the social,
political, and cultural conditions prevailing in the prospective market. People fear the unknown Ăł

The triangle of technology, innovation, and society is one of the central spheres of modern activities.

Revelation is a book unlike the rest of the Bible; it is mostly a record of a vision that John received
from the Lord about the days to come. There are many other books in the Bible written about things to
come, the minor and major prophets, but Revelation stands alone in the realm of solely containing
vision and not a mixture of sermon style teachings. Revelation has a reputation of being solely about
doom and gloom and scary creatures and the end of the world, but in reality it is just a God sized
vision given to a human brain that could not fully understand what it was being given. This human

Gender In The Color Purple
The overarching trauma of this novel is highlighted by Celie s relationship with Shug Avery. Though
the brutality continues, Celie still manages to find an escape allowing her to come closer to the line of
thriving. For Celie her first notion of Shug comes from her abusive husband s obsession with the
singer. Her growing sense of imagination and curiosity began to develop a more nuanced character.
The reader is given a new looking at the character; Celie crosses the threshold of survival to thriving
only for a few fleeting seconds. Our first encounter of this diminishing joy unfortunately encapsulated
a well rounded sense of author s purpose. And then I think about Shug Avery. I know what he doing to
be done to Shug Avery and maybe she like it. I put my arm around him (Walker, 12). There are several
key elements that the author has intentionally created. The first being the motif of sex, for Celie sex
has been a brutal massacring for her body, which resulted in two heartbreaking children. While these
children were taken from her and killed, Walker highlights the wedding night sex scene shifting from
brutal to sad. The reader can clearly see that the idea of Shug is what allows Celie to escape from her
horrid reality. As Charmaine Eddy notes in his paper entitled Marking the body: the material

sexual desire in Celie, this imitation must be seen as a transvestism, a drag

Beauty When The Other Dancer Is The Self, By Alice Walker
Some may confine to societies expectations, rebel, or even enforce them; however, Alice Walker
dances over the categories that society has believed she should be placed in to find something more
meaningful and significant about herself. Alice Walker, known for her numerous awards and 1983
Pulitzer Prize winning work, The Color Purple, is an American novelist, poet, and activist. Her essay,
Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self, is an autobiographical account of an incident that caused
her to go blind in one eye when she was eight years old. Walker s thoughts, feelings, and emotions,
which were cultivated by the standards and pressures of society, are described in her story. While
some may overlook its purpose, the metaphor of dance is significant because it represents her
individual liberation of societal standards and categorization, which in turn influences readers to
consider their oppressors and realize their self worth.
The societal expectations for beauty are an ingrained concept amongst the minds of almost every
individual, who in turn project these standards on each other and their own children. Throughout her
adolescence, Walker seeks for validation of her beauty through others. When I rise to give my speech I
do so on a great wave of love and pride and expectation. (Walker 2). Walker was seeking a reaction
from her audience as she read her Easter speech to her church; a reaction of approval and admiration,
which then confirmed her cuteness . The emotional toil brought upon by the accident caused Walker to
go into a dark place of unacceptance of herself. She did poorly in school, was bullied in school, and
kept her head down for several years of her life because of the shame she felt from the appearance of
her eye. I tell it I hate and despise it. I do not pray for sight. I pray for beauty. (Walker 5). At twelve
years old, Walker talks about the eye that has gone blind and development of her self unacceptance
can be seen here. The lack of concern she had about the function of her eye, but rather the aesthetics,
shows how dependent Walker was on in achieving societal standards.

Analysis Of Sherman Alexie s Lone Ranger And Tonto...
In all mediums of storytelling alike, there is always the question of if the author is being truthful about
the information they are giving. This includes the lessons told through the story of morality in fiction,
historical fiction, or anything related to such topics. Consequently, most books read in popular culture
have a lesson; novels are a form of education. An example of this has been shown through Sherman
Alexie s Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. In this novel, he attempts to shed light on the

However, all of the stories listed with moral lessons are for children. That brings a question; do adult
and young adult novels all have similar lessons to be taught?
Many novels, like 1984 by George Orwell as well as Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by
Sherman Alexie, focus on the time frame and culture the novel was written in. 1984 is a book that
focuses on a dystopian society in Oceana. Big Brother controls every citizens thoughts, actions,
memories, etc., in order to achieve a perfect dictatorial society. Though it was written in 1944, during
World War II, where the dictatorship of Stalin (who Big Brother was based off of) was prevalent, it is
still read to this very day. Most would argue that it is read simply for the classical aesthetic purpose,
but while that still may be true, it is still read due to the fact that society has not learned the lessons
taught in the novel. In the month of January, 1984 shot to No. 1 on Amazon s best seller list [that]
week... (Kakutani, Why 1984 Is a 2017 Must Read) after Sean Spicer describes lies and the facts that
went against the evident truth as Alternative Facts . This struck something in many people that brought
them to draw a connection to the novel in discussion. What this novel teaches is the dangers in total
power and control, as well as the early signs of a dictatorship. These two topics are prevalent in today
s society and political culture, meaning the lessons exemplified in this book can still be

Public Shaming In The Scarlet Letter
Should Public Shaming be left in the Past? Wahh, Wahh, Wahh. Christina is crying as a result of
public humiliation. Public humiliation can hurt someone long term. In The Price of Public Shame
Monica Lewinski was hurt badly by public shaming, and she did not know if she could fight the
constant threats to her. Also, in Is the Internet a Mob without Consequence? Someone tweeted
something bad and in just a couple hours the responses to the tweet was very harsh. Finally in, The
Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne made a mistake and she got publically humiliated for one mistake that
she made. This one mistake ruined her life. Because public shaming can ruin someone s life for one
little mistake they made, it should be left in the past due to the lack of a social life, and potentially
ruining their professional life.
The first component of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humiliation can cause someone to feel lonely, and as a result of this will make that person have the
feeling that no one wants to be there friend. When someone is humiliated that person does not want to
show their face in public, which is a reason why they lack a social life. As stated in , The Scarlet
Letter, it states, Measured by the prisoner s experience, however, it might reckoned a journey of some
length; for, haughty as her demeanor was, she perchance underwent an agony from every footstep of
those that thronged to see her, as if her heart had been flung in the street for them all to spurn and
trample upon. This quote means that Hester is walking through the streets of her town and no one is
saying anything to her or making eye contact with her at all. She is being completely shunned for one
mistake that she had made. This must make Hester feel very sorrowful that no one is talking to her.
That indicated that public shaming can lead to the absence of a social life because no one is talking to
Hester at all because of what she did. Also, stated in The Price of Public

HINTS an Organization Helping People with Cancer Essay
HINTS is an organization that conducts surveys to random people around the United States. The
surveys are mainly on topics relating to cancer and how those people are familiar to cancer related
information. This information is helpful to see the pattern of change in people s knowledge and
potential opportunities to inform the public of common or uprising health issues. The surveys want to
know how adults, from the ages 18 and older, obtain information, mainly about cancer topics, either
for their own use or for a relative or friend. With this information available, HINTS can find better
opportunities to spread knowledge of cancer prevention and hopefully reduce the number of people
diagnosed with this lethal disease. HINTS has Three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

reveal their occupation. Only one person refused to reveal if he or she has ever been diagnosed with
cancer and it was a retired person. One disabled person did not know if they have ever been diagnosed
with cancer. From this crosstabulation, it seems as retired people have the highest rate of getting
cancer and students have the least possibilities of having cancer. The Pearson Chi Square value is

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Cooperatives
14.31 Workers co operatives
In large public companies, management and ownership are separate. By contrast, in workers co
operatives employees will have contributed towards the capital of the organisation and may elect
managers at annual meetings.
The advantage of workers co operatives is that all workers can take part in discussions regarding their
firm. Therefore, there is a strong incentive for workers to work harder and increase profitability if they
anticipate receiving higher dividends from their shares.
Another advantage is that taking part in the decision‐making process helps to motivate workers.
However if the co operative becomes bankrupt then the workers will lose both their jobs and the value
of their shares. It may then be difficult to persuade employees to put more capital into the business.
The objectives of co operatives are usually to provide goods and services to consumers at reasonable
prices and to pay fair wages to the workers.
Whilst there have been workers co operatives for a considerable time there has been a noticeable
increase in their number in recent years. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to avoid people having shares in order to pay the advantages of windfalls, the Nationwide
Building society, which is the largest, has a clause that new shareholders i.e. almost anyone who has
deposits agrees to forgo the windfall and the money would instead go to a trust. The logic of this
clause was otherwise, since there is one member one vote so called carpetbaggers would have small
deposits in the mutual organisations and would then try to get a vote on getting the organisation to
become a company since they would get a disproportionate return if the building society could be

Police Brutality And The Riot
During 1992 in South Central Los Angeles, a riot started after the news of four white Los Angeles
police officers beating Rodney King was published on TV. It became daily news. The riot caused
many crimes to occur; participants of the riot burned down business stores, destroyed properties, and
some activities involved guns that have led to many deaths. Many South Central residents were
unsatisfied with police brutality and the way their community were being treated. Although the riot
only lasted for about a week, about 52 people were killed (Kivisto and Rundblad 82). The whole
neighborhood were ruined and destroyed. Ever since that riot, there were over 1 million property loss
(Kivisto and Rundblad 82), and over 700 businesses were burned down (Bergesen and Herman para.
1). Many people lost their jobs because their workplace were destroyed.
There were many different reasons that may have caused the 1992 riot in Los Angeles to occur.
However, not all of them were the main reasons of the riot. There were many side causes, for instance,
after the video of Rodney King being beaten was shown on television, residents of South Central Los
Angeles started to act up. They were affected by how King was being mistreated and how police
brutality played a big role in the video and their society. King s incident was very similar to many
other cases. For example, Anna Deavere Smith mentioned a case about Michael Zinzun from her book
Twilight Los Angeles 1992, Zinzun witnessed a police

The Fall Of A City By Alden Nowlan
The birth of a child is a truly magical occurrence. Once a baby s gender is determined, either through
ultrasound, or from the brief examination of a doctor, this small branch of a family s inheritance, has
already been designated with countless burdensome requirements to follow within their limited world.
In regards to historical stereotypes, timid, little girls wear pink skirts and hair bows. These girls grow
up to become housewives, who cook, clean and babysit the children. Meanwhile, boisterous young
boys have the whole world to conquer and rule. The multiple responsibilities of a man are deemed as
very important since he is the person who earns the family income. In contrast, Teddy, the main
character of The Fall of a City by Canadian author Alden Nowlan, is a very inventive and quiet child,
who uses his imagination to build himself a utopian escape in his dark, gloomy attic. He uses scrap
paper to create the citizens of Upalia and cardboard to fabricate the radiant city of Theodoresburg.
Eventually, Teddy s aunt worries about what Teddy is constantly doing, hidden away from his family.
His uncle heads to the attic only to discover the shocking revelation that Teddy has been playing with
paper dolls and a doll house. Teddy s uncle laughs and teases Teddy mercilessly, culminating in Teddy
to go against his accomplishments and lose an important part of his individuality. Furthermore, the
conflict between Teddy and his uncle is a manifestation of how many adults, such as

Tragic Events Of World War II
World War II
World War II, such a tragic event. It left many people homeless and dead. Many people wonder what
happened, before the war, during the war, life after the war, and lastly, current foreign affairs? On one
side of the world was the Great Depression and on the other side the rise of Hitler was beginning.
Lives for the Jewish people began changing soon after World War I ended. Hitler was rising to power.
Hitler rose to power because he blamed the Jews for the loss in World War I and used them as a
scapegoat until he became the Fuhrer of Germany. After Hitler became Fuhrer he began to persecute
the Jews for their actions in World War I. Many Jews began to flee from Germany and into
surrounding countries. Lives for the Germans was

Essay on Rites of Passage
Rites of Passage
Although there are many different types of rites of passage they differ in many ways, some much more
extreme than the others. There are so many different cultures that have a ton of different ways of
expressing rites of passage. The three different cultures that will be discussed are the United States of
America, Malaysian, and Balinese adolescents. Some of the things that will be discussed are the
different forms of rites of passage, the different ages that they take place at, and how they affect all the
different societies.

Although it is all meant to be fun and games sometimes they are taken too far and really need to be
thought out better so that crazy things like that do not happen any longer. (Chicago tribune) The more
normal rites of passage that occur in the United States are much less extreme such as Sweet Sixteen
parties, marriages, and funerals. They all have a very different meaning at each point in someone s
life. Sweet Sixteen parties usually symbolize somebody becoming an adult although most of the time
nowadays people really aren t considered an adult until they re at least 18 and in most cases even older
than that. Marriage is sort of your next stage in life when you and another person join together and
start a family and hopefully have great lives together. Then there is a funeral which is a much less
enjoyed time in everyone s lives when you put a loved one to rest. For a lot of people their loved ones
will go to Heaven but that changes with every individual on what they believe in if they even believe
in an afterlife at all.
There are quite a few important rites of passage in the Malay society starting with the birth of the
baby. After the birth the baby and the mother are put in a confinement period of forty four days in their
homes. There are also two other common ceremonies that they practice during the infant years niak
buaian, which is a ceremony to introduce the baby to their cradle and potong jambul which is an event
when the child s

Mainstreeter Law Case Paper
When starting a new law firm, there are a variety of expenses. Some are a one time start up fees, and
others will be reoccurring. By far the biggest expense will be purchasing an office building. The office
space Mainstreeter Law hopes to purchase is a two story house in which the entire first floor has been
converted into a traditional 3 office layout. The second floor is a 2 bedroom apartment that is totally
separated from the first floor offices and includes its own entrance in the back. The location and size
of this office are ideal. It is in downtown Sauk Centre, and the 3 offices allow Mainstreeter Law room
to grow. At $159,000, it is a substantial investment, however, because Mainstreeter Law is buying
instead of renting, they will be able to build equity with each payment. The monthly mortgage
payment on a 15 year fixed loan with a rate of 4.18% would be $1,196 per month. While this sounds
like a lot, Mainstreeter Law would be able to rent out the upstairs apartment to partner Nicholas
Adams for $600 per month. This cuts Mainstreeter Law s month mortgage payment to only $600. ...

When adding up all of the start up fees, they equal about $3,600. The monthly expenses, including the
$600 net mortgage payment, equates to roughly $2,600 per month. It is important to note that this does
not include salaries for any support staff. At this time, Mainstreeter Law does not intend to hire any
support staff, such as paralegals. As the firm grows, however, this will become another expense. The
average yearly salary for a paralegal in Central Minnesota is roughly $36,000. As for partner
compensation, the partners will not pay themselves a set yearly salary. Their compensation will come
from whatever surplus profit there is. End of the year bonuses will be distributed based off of the

The French Revolution Occurred During The Time Periods
The French Revolution occurred during the time periods 1787 to 1799 which shook France. Its climax
reached in 1789 when the ancien regime ended in France. The French Revolution was the most violent
and by far the most universally significant revolution compared to the rest. The initial cause of the
revolution was the social structure of the West. One social structure that was based on the holding of
all land by fees that resulted in the relation of the king to vassal was called the feudal system that
weakened step by step and had already disappeared in certain regions of Europe prior to the
revolution. The feudal system was characterized by homage, legal and military service of tenants, and
punishment. Wealthy commoners, also called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rousseau was an anti philosophe, he took Montesquieu s theory a step further in which civilization
corrupts rather than nature and that big states are also corrupt, small states are best. During the time, as
France faced heavy expenditure that the wars had brought, the rulers had raised money by taxing the
nobles and clergy and the rulers were backed upon the enlightened despots. There are many causes
that could have contributed to the French Revolution like the peasants were aware of their situation
and were less willing to support the feudal system. The philosophes were well read throughout the
region and questioned many. The government was at the edge of bankruptcy due to their involvement
in the American Revolution because there was a refusal to pay taxes given by the Great Britain King
which ended with the rulers and privileged class become allies with the peasants and non privileged
class. There was many economic factors that started the French revolution also like: crop failures in
1788 and the population increasing. The French Monarchy was vanishing because it was unable to
adapt to the pressures brought onto it which also contributed to the start of the French Revolution. The
Great War lasted 1914 1918 that involved 28 nations around the world. It started with the
assassination of Franz Ferdinand and then Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia. Due to an alliance,
called Triple Alliance, Germany and Italy joined Austria Hungary while

Latinx Feminist Theory
The term feminism encapsulates a vast variety of topics important to women s rights. Unfortunately,
feminist theory is often talked about within the restrictions of a reproductive binary. Latinx feminist
theory is more than just a reproduction binary. As women of color, Latinx women have historically
been undermined and excluded from social narratives. Latinx women however, challenge various
forms of oppression, such as the perpetuations of sexism, racism, and violence, by sharing their
testimonios to the world a vulnerable yet incredibly strong form of resistance. This specialized theory
addresses many of the barriers that intersect and impact Latinx women on a daily and generational
basis. Evident in my resistance poem, through the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I demonstrate the importance of allywork to the Latinx feminist theory in stanza six by which I call for
readers to help Liberate not only women, but anyone oppressed. Despite the differences of our
experiences, Latinx feminist theory believes that our differences should serve as an incentive to
establish solidarity towards justice, not another borderland to cross. Similar to the reproductive justice
theory s utilization of the Ubuntu philosophy, the belief in the universal bond of sharing that connects
all humanity (201 RJT) Latinx feminist theory embraces unity as a direct path to the realization of the
left world concept. Furthermore, I emphasize the essentiality of allywork to the theory through the
motif of It begins today/Empezando hoy. The motif functions as a reminder of how vital it is to Latinx
feminist theory to being unified among marginalized groups as a way of creating effective change for

  • 2. I Have a Rendezvous With Death- Alan Seeger I Have a Rendezvous with Death written by Alan Seeger works primarily as an expression of differentiating between the conventional view of death, versus the author s intake. All elements of this poem rhyme scheme, personification, diction and imagery work to this effect. With the aid of these elements, the author is able to enlighten his readers that even though foreseeable and capricious, death is not something that we should feared; rather we should come to terms that it is an inevitable part of life and perhaps even anticipate it. To begin analyzing this poem and its nature, we first must understand the context and time period in which it was written. Alan Seeger was twenty six when World War One broke out in Europe. Due to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is also debatable that spring in addition to death, spring is being personified. In the seasons, spring is something longed for and vastly anticipated. In this instance the narrator states, When Spring comes back with rustling shade/ and apple blossoms fill the air ... I have a rendezvous with death . (5 7). This is a great illustration in which the author uses juxtaposition, by placing death and spring side by side in order to sharply compare and contrast them. In turn this creates a sharp contrasts between the unpredicted, sudden end of a life, in a disputable barricade, (2) versus the much anticipated spring, which would symbolize happiness, life and prosperity. This initiates a train of thought from the reader, perhaps the end of life is not quite as foreboding to the author as we often expect. This is exemplified again when the author mentions his rendezvous with death, and the coming of spring, When Spring brings back blue days and fair (6). Diction is employed thoroughly in order to direct the connotations of the reader towards his views on death and to evoke contradicting meanings. This creates almost an emotive tone within the calming sound of the poem if it were to be read aloud. In turn this again demonstrates calmness and peace next to a generally disagreeable situation (death). For instance this is demonstrated with the recurrence of the line, I have a rendezvous with Death. The word, rendezvous coming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Michael Bruce s A Man Of Logic Bruce had always preferred wandering to the confines of four walls. Although, if SHEILD had their way, General Ross in particular, he would ve been imprisoned a long time ago. Somewhere where the sun doesn t shine. Locked away, and probably left to rot, in one of SHIELD s many undisclosed correctional facilities. But there was something to be said about sleeping beneath the stars. To be reminded how insignificant you really were. A man of logic, philosophy had never been a fascination for Bruce. His mind prone to working out problems from a scientific standpoint than an emotional one. But left with time to spare over the years, Bruce came to realize how ironic his life has been. At how better off the world would have been if his father had succeeded in killing him all those years ago. Bruce deserved nothing less than the cave he caged himself in. Spending a great deal with himself had left Dr. Banner questioning his existence, more so in the light of recent events. And already in a struggle for his own identity, philosophy only twisted his sense of insignificancy. So it didn t seem possible that he d ever seen the stars again. Self exile didn t stem from just one reason, but a number of them. Each one weaving in and out of Banner s thoughts until he felt control slipping through his grasp. The Scarlet Witch had done more than simply cast an illusion that killed dozens of people. She created in Bruce a sense of reproach, a part of him second guessing his role in the ... • 5. The Quality Of A Balance Scorecard A balance scorecard is an instrument managers use to gauge performance based on significant performance measures chosen by the manager. Each performance measure can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any organization. According to Cardinaels and Veen Dirks, firms either have a list of measures or groups of measures separated into categories to evaluate performance. There are four common categories that are used to group and describe the different performance measures. The four categories are financial, customer, internal business, and learning and growth (Cardinaels M.G. van Veen Dirks, 2010). Cardinaels and Veen Dirks said the financial category concentrates on financial data like sales margin percentages and sales growth per store. The customer perspective concentrates on repetitive sales and customer satisfaction. Internal business concentrates on returns to suppliers and the amount of orders completed. Learning and growth concentrates on the development of employees how happy employees are with their job. Customer, internal business, and learning and growth measures are considered to be non financial measures (Cardinaels M.G. van Veen Dirks, 2010). According to Cardinaels and Veen Dirks, placing performance measures into categories help the reader make decisions by being able to focus on individual areas rather than each individual measure to make an overall decision on the performance of the organization as a whole. One good thing about an unformatted score ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The characters in the novel have dreams and goals and not one dream ends well. That is why my thesis statement is: The Great Gatsby is really about unattainable dreams. The dreams I am discussing is Gatsby´s American dream, Daisy s dream and Nick s dream. The dreams are based on the love story between Daisy and Gatsby. The final piece in Gatsby s American dream would be if he got Daisy to wed him. Daisy dreams of Gatsby but chooses between him and her current husband Tom. Nick wants Gatsby s life to be a happy life and he cares a lot about him. His dream is for the story to end well. When Daisy does not choose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He wishes that Gatsby s life should contain a happy ever after. There are a lot of dreams in the book but I want to distinguish these three main dreams and how none of them gets fulfilled. Gatsby s American dream The first dream that does not get fulfilled is the one of Gatsby. He starts off as an underprivileged boy and struggles his way to the top. We make his acquaintance when he is on the top of his life. He is enjoying his big house and his vast wealth. The one thing he cannot have is his lovely Daisy. Gatsby s story reflects the classical American dream: Anyone can make anything of himself/herself with just elbow grease, spirit and a whole lot of confidence. Jay loves Daisy and, sadly, she is the one thing which he cannot procure to his perfect life . His wealth is shown clearly, for instance when he throws huge parties just to have the chance of meeting or seeing Daisy. This behavior is not feasible if you do not have that kind of money which leads us to the conclusion that he is wealthy. The symbol that portrays the American dream is the green light. The light symbolizes wealth but also Daisy, the latter because there is a green light at the end of Daisy´s dock. He reaches out for it just like he reaches out for his dream. His material world reflects Daisy. Daisy is sometimes a symbol of the American dream. Her voice is full of money... That was it. I d never understood before. • 10. Argumentative Essay On Mexican Migrant Workers The phenomenal growth farming, minding, railroad construction, and commercial fishing all have a story of transnational families and shattered dreams. With the coming of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, many mexicans fled north to the United States in order to escape the bloodshed in search of new lives. Sadly their dream for a better life did not come true. Migrant workers work for low wages in extreme conditions such as extreme heat, discomfort, and danger, as well as struggling to have a stable life for their families. The disastrous great depression left many people unemployed. As a result, a large number of caucasian people took over many migrant workers jobs in California. This left many Mexicans and Filipinos desperate and willing to do anything for money. Farm workers were often unpaid and were denied the right to unionize, a right that all other American workers enjoyed. Migrant workers are from different ethnicities such as Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Europeans, but most of the population is made up of Mexican migrant workers. Migrant workers lived a very harsh work environment as well as a harsh society interactions. Mexican farm workers were offered a legally binding work contract, but the majority suffered gross abuses of their labor rights and racial discrimination. Migrant workers have always played a vital role in the US economy, so they should not be treated as illegal or undeserving individuals. People have always harassed migrant workers and soon it ... • 12. Criminal Justice System Essay 1. Some developments in American policing and the criminal justice system during the colonial period that were influenced by the English police experience were the idea of self defense and protecting yourself (p.9). The United States had a sheriff who was important to the police force, just like the English. In the U.S the sheriffs were paid more like the thief takers, which were paid fees for each arrest they made (p.9). During the Colonial period they used the English s idea of constables and night watchmen, which was similar to the watch and ward (p.9). In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they had constables and watchmen just like the English at first. Then the United states took the English s idea of creating their own police department. ... He drafted the first police bill, the Act for Improving the Police in and near the Metropolis. Once Parliament passed the act in 1829, then the first large scale, uniformed, organized, paid, civil police force in London was formed (p. 6). A second important person was Henry Fielding and his half brother, Sir John Fielding. They laid the foundation for the first modern police force. They went around to pawn shops and asked the owners to notify if stolen property was brought into the pawnshops. The Fielding s came up with the idea of the first official crime report, which we use today (p. 6). The third important person was Stephen Austin. He hired a dozen bodyguards to protect the Texicans from the Native Americans and bandits. They were officially named the Texas Rangers. The Texas Rangers became the first United States state police agency (p. 16). The fourth important people were the thief takers. Compare And Contrast The Book And Book Quoting Joseph Conrad s famous statement as a storyteller My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the powers of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel it is, before all, to make to see. My final would be a great example to talk about when it comes to procrastination! Now, here I am doing my final on Wednesday night at 10:43 p.m. I m first going to speak about Ainslie Rachlin model and how if I had applied this model to my behavior, I wouldn t be in this predicament right now. Ainslie Rachlin: focuses on the fact that the preference between smaller sooner and larger later rewards can shift over time (Powell). With the Ainslie Rachlin model, it s described as the shift change of smaller sooner and larger later. This is where I told myself I would be doing my final two days ago. I found myself doing other things, such as working. That would be a reversal of preference . As the days went by, the smaller sooner reward became imminent. I knew that when I finished this final I would officially be done for the semester, you would think that would be a big enough reward to have done my final early?  The Ainslie Rachlin model is based on the assumption that the value of the reward is a hyperbolic function of its delay. In simple terms, what it means is that the delay for the curve for the reward which is describes the relationship between reward value and time delay. Decreasing delays producing larder and larder increments in value. In other words, the value of a reward increases more and more sharply as delay decreases and reward becomes imminent (Powell) ... What Was The Role Of Women In The 18th Century The Women present during the time period 1650 1800 were definitely the unsung heroes who not only revolutionized France, but also made several contributions to Western and several other societies. Women made several contributions mainly in literature, politics, visual arts, and society. Women during 18th century made a remarkable contribution to literature, which involved the philosophes assisting Diderot in the creation of the Encyclopedie in France, which has 72,000 entries that involve a wide variety of information on specific subjects such as political theory (Fiero, 144). Additionally, Chatelet produced an annotated French translation of Newton s Principia which was regarded as a monumental achievement (Fiero, 144). • 16. Overview Of Erikson s Psychosocial Model Of Development Since the development of Erik Erikson s psychosocial model of development in the 1960s, it has become one of the most widely used measurements for studying emotional and personality development across the human lifespan (Dunkel Harbke, 2017). Erikson s model contains eight developmental stages, beginning in infancy and progressing until old age, and as a person ages they begin to pass through the stages, with a new psychological crisis arising at each stage (Svetina, 2014). Whitbourne, Sneed and Sayer (2009) describe how the outcome of each crisis is met with identity attainment and new personal adaptations (positive outcome), or with an incoherent identity (negative outcome). Additionally, each new stage allows for the reassessment of previous achievements, and in some cases, failures (Dunkel Harbke, 2017). Erikson s model is commonly recognised as a developmental ladder each previous stage lays a foundation before an individual can progress toward the next stage (Malone, Liu, Valliant, Rentz Waldinger, 2016). It is important to note that whilst they are referred to as stages , they should be viewed as being on a continuum rather than fixed categories (Dunkel Harbke, 2017). The current paper will focus on three key stages of Erikson s model industry vs. inferiority, intimacy vs. isolation, and generativity vs. stagnation. Applying each to selected characters from the 2003 romantic comedy Christmas film, Love Actually. This film follows the lives of eight unique couples, each dealing with both their love lives and personal development. Interestingly, each of the eight stories are loosely interrelated. The film picks up five weeks before Christmas, playing out a weekly countdown to the annual holiday, concluding with an epilogue that takes place a month after Christmas. Whilst the film follows eight couples, the current paper will only focus on three individuals Sam, Sarah, and Billy Mack. Each of whom are in different stages of Erikson s model. Erikson s theory of psychosocial development is suited to analyse this particular film as each character, including ones beyond this analysis, are all in different stages and outcomes of the model. The rapid emergence of this music and its subculture has left the church and clergy alike asking the question why? Especially since much of what I would call secular Rap is off the hook these days. How so, do you ask? There is a surplus of gratuitous violence, and sexually explicit Rap lyrics, that currently ride the airwaves and is uploaded into countless IPODs, MP3s, and Myspace.com websites. This repetition creates a real emphasis, and adds to the mood of this passage of exasperation and uncertainty. The author s tone is shared with Dellarobia. The tone is irritated and disgruntled. On the other, they depict the structures and institutions which empower women and increase their participation in the socio political, economic and spiritual activities in their community. Taking a Look at Inductive Interference An example of inductive inference would be the assumption that if you meet someone in public and they are nice, and you have no reason to judge the next person, then they will be nice as well. Inductive inferences are an unconscious way to process events in a way that supports positive morality; without inductive inferences, people would be left to deal with only truths and although the truth is normally a good thing, it may not be best for everyone to know. With inductive inferences, people can live their lives making positive assumptions which put the mind at ease versus knowing negative things that can ultimately lead to overstress. The previous example of inductive inference relies on SPI because the inference is based on your perception thus far of the scenario; if your perception of random people is that they are nice, then per the SPI, you can only assume the next person will be as well because it is the only information you have. Based solely on experience, one cannot be justified in accepting the SPI because they would not be making a real inference; their experiences do not necessarily entail truth in their conclusion. One would also not be justified on the basis of deductive inference because that method means that the conclusion is only factual to the premises it was formed from; in other words, you can only assume everyone will be nice if there are no mean people to begin with. • 35. Revelation By Joh John Revelation is a book unlike the rest of the Bible; it is mostly a record of a vision that John received from the Lord about the days to come. There are many other books in the Bible written about things to come, the minor and major prophets, but Revelation stands alone in the realm of solely containing vision and not a mixture of sermon style teachings. Revelation has a reputation of being solely about doom and gloom and scary creatures and the end of the world, but in reality it is just a God sized vision given to a human brain that could not fully understand what it was being given. • 36. Gender In The Color Purple The overarching trauma of this novel is highlighted by Celie s relationship with Shug Avery. Though the brutality continues, Celie still manages to find an escape allowing her to come closer to the line of thriving. For Celie her first notion of Shug comes from her abusive husband s obsession with the singer. Her growing sense of imagination and curiosity began to develop a more nuanced character. The reader is given a new looking at the character; Celie crosses the threshold of survival to thriving only for a few fleeting seconds. Our first encounter of this diminishing joy unfortunately encapsulated a well rounded sense of author s purpose. And then I think about Shug Avery. I know what he doing to be done to Shug Avery and maybe she like it. I put my arm around him (Walker, 12). There are several key elements that the author has intentionally created. The first being the motif of sex, for Celie sex has been a brutal massacring for her body, which resulted in two heartbreaking children. While these children were taken from her and killed, Walker highlights the wedding night sex scene shifting from brutal to sad. The reader can clearly see that the idea of Shug is what allows Celie to escape from her horrid reality. As Charmaine Eddy notes in his paper entitled Marking the body: the material dislocation of gender in Alice Walker s The Color Purple Because Shug s picture has initiated lesbian sexual desire in Celie, this imitation must be seen as a transvestism, a drag ... • 38. Beauty When The Other Dancer Is The Self, By Alice Walker Some may confine to societies expectations, rebel, or even enforce them; however, Alice Walker dances over the categories that society has believed she should be placed in to find something more meaningful and significant about herself. Alice Walker, known for her numerous awards and 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning work, The Color Purple, is an American novelist, poet, and activist. Her essay, Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self, is an autobiographical account of an incident that caused her to go blind in one eye when she was eight years old. Walker s thoughts, feelings, and emotions, which were cultivated by the standards and pressures of society, are described in her story. While some may overlook its purpose, the metaphor of dance is significant because it represents her individual liberation of societal standards and categorization, which in turn influences readers to consider their oppressors and realize their self worth. The societal expectations for beauty are an ingrained concept amongst the minds of almost every individual, who in turn project these standards on each other and their own children. Throughout her adolescence, Walker seeks for validation of her beauty through others. When I rise to give my speech I do so on a great wave of love and pride and expectation. (Walker 2). Walker was seeking a reaction from her audience as she read her Easter speech to her church; a reaction of approval and admiration, which then confirmed her cuteness . The emotional toil brought upon by the accident caused Walker to go into a dark place of unacceptance of herself. She did poorly in school, was bullied in school, and kept her head down for several years of her life because of the shame she felt from the appearance of her eye. I tell it I hate and despise it. I do not pray for sight. I pray for beauty. (Walker 5). At twelve years old, Walker talks about the eye that has gone blind and development of her self unacceptance can be seen here. The lack of concern she had about the function of her eye, but rather the aesthetics, shows how dependent Walker was on in achieving societal standards. Many novels, like 1984 by George Orwell as well as Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie, focus on the time frame and culture the novel was written in. 1984 is a book that focuses on a dystopian society in Oceana. Big Brother controls every citizens thoughts, actions, memories, etc., in order to achieve a perfect dictatorial society. Though it was written in 1944, during World War II, where the dictatorship of Stalin (who Big Brother was based off of) was prevalent, it is still read to this very day. The advantage of workers co operatives is that all workers can take part in discussions regarding their firm. Therefore, there is a strong incentive for workers to work harder and increase profitability if they anticipate receiving higher dividends from their shares. Another advantage is that taking part in the decision‐making process helps to motivate workers.
