TASK 1. TRANSLATION
MARITZA DEL PILAR GAVIRIA CARLOS ARTURO VALENCIA
TASK 1. TRANSLATION
CARLOS ARTURO SALCEDO ZONIA LUZ GÓMEZ MEDINA
TASK 2. REFLECTION
Name Reflection
MARITZA DEL PILAR GAVIRIA There were some difficult words or expressions
because they have different meanings
depending on the context, such as: break up,
sprang up. There were others like abbreviations
or proper nouns like Luddites and Greens.
As a tool I used an online traductor and search
some concepts in a browser. I had to apply the
Direct Translation Techniques such as
Borrowing and Literal Translation. I also applied
Oblique Translation Techniques such as
Transposition and Modulation.
CARLOS ARTURO VALENCIA It is sometimes confusing when we try to
translate concepts, I think it is the most
challenging thing, or when we found in the
context some Idiomatic expressions, because
its definition depends on the country’s culture,
another thing to be aware of is when we
translate phrasal verbs, some of them change
the meaning according to its preposition. I
applied the communicative translation method,
where I tried to give the contextual meaning of
the original paragraph.
TASK 2. REFLECTION
Name Reflection
CARLOS ARTURO SALCEDO For these type of translation, the hardest part
is the unknow vocabulary, and they have to
do with translation and interpretation but
using the exact words our translation would
be very accurate.
We always find some difficulties when
translating but, I have been translating
documents from English to Spanish for 10
years so far.
ZONIA LUZ GÓMEZ MEDINA All language has its own style, meaning,
idioms. It is not easy to understand new
vocabulary without the context. In this case, I
read all the text to understand the main
ideas, I tried to use the direct translation but
sometimes it was needed to get the
translation word for word, for example with
words like drought or famine, in order to get
a complete translation. At the beginning, I
had a doubt with the word disease because I
thought it was a misuse, but then I
understood the meaning in that type of
sentence.
TASK 3. CHART
MARITZA DEL PILAR GAVIRIA
METHOD STRATEGY TECHNIQUE
Is the level at which the theory, the
content taught and the order are put into
practice.
The particular form of procedure for
accomplishing or approaching
something, especially a systematic or
established one.
Is the level at which the theory is put into
practice.
The plan of action or policy designed to
achieve a major or overall aim.
It refers to the tools that are used to
convey knowledge.
The way of carrying out a particular task,
especially the execution or performance.
CARLOS ARTURO VALENCIA
METHOD STRATEGY TECHNIQUE
Method makes reference to the group of
strategies and tools used in order to
achieve the proposed goals. Everything
requires a method in order to be done.
A strategy is a method or plan used in
order to achieve the goals or give
solution to a problem.
A technique is a method of developing or
performing any activity, in translation we
have for example the technique of
borrowing, calque, the literal translation,
etc.
TASK 3. CHART
CARLOS ARTURO SALCEDO
Method
(In my own words)
Strategy
(In my own words)
Technique
(In my own words)
Syllabus, a stablish way for doing
something, I mean there are many
methods to do things, not only for
teaching English but to reach other
goal in several areas, plus there are
many methods for teaching English.
The strategy is the plan it is a
scaffold way of previsualizing what to
do before doing the thing.
It is part of the method, for example
training you have one method but a
person can train them with food,
playing or commanding, so the food
technic, the playing technic or the
commanding technic.
ZONIA LUZ GÓMEZ MEDINA
Method Strategy Technique
It is a way to do something. There are many
ways to do the things that I decide to develop.
If we talk about a method of translation I could
say I’m going to use in this text a literal
translation, for example.
A plan of action to solving any problem. For
example, when we are talking about translation
problems I can use as a strategy retention of the
name or omission of the name.
It is the procedure for developing a specific
task. For example, if we talk about translation I
could use direct translation techniques or
oblique translation techniques.
TASK 4. FEEDBACK
Carlos Arturo Salcedo Maritza Gaviria
I think the part in which you say "LA COMIDA DE FRAKENSTEIN" I think is
"comida Frankenstein" and the part which says " experimentales campos" I think it
is "campos experimentales".
Maritza Gaviria Carlos Arturo Salcedo
Congratulations for your translation, it is very well structured and accurate. I can
notice your experience and application of the different translation techniques.
About your reflection, I agree with you when saying that the hardest part it is the
unknown vocabulary, that's why the translator must search about the topic in
mention in order to find the best meaning and use.
It would be interesting to know which translation techniques you applied and how
you handled the translation in general.
TASK 4. FEEDBACK
Carlos Arturo Salcedo Carlos Arturo Valencia
Excellent well done on the translation, I did not see any mistake.
Maritza GaviriaCarlos Arturo Valencia
You did an excellent work, I agree with you when we translate a document we find
some things we have to deal with, for example as you said, the phrasal verbs and
the idiomatic expressions and abbreviations.
Well done.
TASK 4. FEEDBACK
Carlos Arturo Valencia
I really consider you did an excellent translation. It is accurate and easy to follow.
About your reflection, I think phrasal verbs do change the meaning depending on
the context, that's why translator need to be careful of choosing the best one to be
coherent.
In my opinion you did a very detailed compilation chart of Method, Strategy and
Technic; giving a directly meaning and examples.
Maritza Gaviria
Zonia Luz Gómez
Thank you for your participation, I already checked it and I can say it is a very
good job. The translation is coherent and accurate.
Your reflection shows the difficulties you had to deal and the translation techniques
you used, so, I could understood the analysis and deepness you did.
