The document discusses the differences between a leader and manager in business ownership. A leader asks questions, raises expectations, creates value and vision, and leads by example. In contrast, a manager uses power and controls by following policies and procedures. To be an effective leader, business owners must prioritize communication, serve as a role model, and develop a team environment where employees feel involved and responsible. The most important aspect of a business is having happy, satisfied employees, which is better achieved through leadership rather than management.

Finally, perhaps the most important quality of a leader is his or her ability to inspire and motivate others. In some ways all of the above serve to do this, but the most inspiring quality of all is to practise what you preach. Leading by example is the most effective way to convey integrity, commitment, and vision – and to transmit enthusiasm and loyalty to others.

How Company Culture Shapes Business Outcomes | Bennat BergerBennat Berger
Company culture is more than just having a ping pong table and the occasional happy hour. It’s the essence of a business: the pervasive vision, values, and systems pulsing within employees, management, atmosphere and more. Some like to call it the genetic code of a company, though in some circumstances it can be more malleable than that.
More and more, good company culture is being recognized as vital to a company’s success; on the flip side, toxic culture has been witnessed contributing to huge failures. Built into business at its most basic level, company culture is both the result of a company’s structure and the support that keeps it standing. It’s both an outcome of hiring choices, and the force that drives them. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle: a company shapes its culture and the culture shapes the company, over and over or all at once.
How Culture Can Define The Success of Your Startup - even though you feel that you have too much on your plate as an entrepreneur, it is never too early to define your company culture. Everything you do in business is determined by how well you defined your company culture.

Servant Leadership for traditional managersRasmus Runberg
When teams, product development and entire organizations move from traditional processes to Agile, we as Managers, have to be prepared for it. It’s a new world where teams are self-organizing, the project has no deadlines, and we as managers are no longer Kings on the Mountaintop.
Leadership and autonomous teams are the buzz-words of today so we as managers have to go through our own agile transformation in order to survive.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. OVERVIEW
• BEING A LEADER IS SOMETHING EVERYONE WANTS TO BE, WHETHER IT BE AT
WORK, SPORTS, ORGANIZATIONS, ETC. YOU WANT TO BE LOOKED UP TOO, AND
TO HAVE THE “ATTENTION.”
• WHEN YOU OWN A BUSINESS, YOU WANT TO BE A LEADER AND NOT A
MANAGER. YOU WANT TO BE SOMEONE LOOKS UP TO, NOT SOMEONE WHO
TELLS OTHERS WHAT TO DO WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING THEMSELVES
3. LEADER VS.MANAGER
• BEFORE WE GO AHEAD AND TALK ABOUT LEADERSHIP IN A BUSINESS, LETS GO
AHEAD AND TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MANAGER AND LEADER
• A LEADER
• ASKS QUESTIONS
• RAISES EXPECTATIONS
• LEAD GROUPS
• CREATES VALUE
• CREATES A VISION
• CREATES A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT
4. LEADER VS. MANAGER (CONT.)
• A MANAGER
• USES POWER
• CONTROLS
• GIVES DIRECTION
• MANAGING WORK
• FOLLOWS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
5. LEADER VS. MANAGER EXAMPLES
• AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MANAGER VS. A
LEADER, AND THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IS THAT ONE CONTROLS WHERE THE
OTHER OVERSEES, AND LETS THEM GO AND DO WHAT THEY WANT SO TO
SPEAK.
• AN EXAMPLE OF A GOOD LEADER IS TONY FROM ZAPPOS. HE ALLOWS HIS
WORKERS TO DO WHAT MAKES THEM COMFORTABLE UNDER THE CULTURE.
• AN EXAMPLE OF A MANAGER IS A BOSS AT MCDONALDS. THEY FOLLOW RULES
TO A T, AND THEY GO AROUND TELLING THEM WHAT TO DO, INSTEAD OF
BEING INVOLVED WITH THEM
6. KEYS TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
• THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT MAKE SOMEONE A LEADER, BUT WHAT MAKES
THEM AN EFFECTIVE LEADER?
• THE WAY THEY GO ABOUT WORKING WITH THE EMPLOYEES, WHICH ARE 4
DIFFERENT WAYS
• 1) COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER
• FOCUS MORE ON THE PEOPLE, AND LESS ON THE TASK.
• THIS TELLS ME THAT PEOPLE IS A BIG CONCERN FOR THIS BOSS
7. KEYS TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
(CONT.)
• 2) TEAM MANAGER
• HIGH PEOPLE / HIGH TASK
• THIS TELLS ME THAT ALTHOUGH PEOPLE ARE A HIGH PRIORITY, THE WORK THAT
NEEDS TO BE DONE IS A BIG PRIORITY AS WELL
3) IMPROVISED MANAGER
LOW PEOPLE / LOW TASK
THIS TELLS ME THAT THE MANAGER IS FOCUSED ON HIMSELF, AND NOT ON THE
JOB AT HAND
8. KEYS TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
(CONT.)
• 4) AUTHORITY OBEDIENCE MANAGER
• LOW PEOPLE / HIGH TASK
• THIS TELLS ME THAT THE MANAGER IS ABOUT FOLLOWING THE RULES DOWN TO THE
PERIOD, AND THAT THE PERSONA OF HIS EMPLOYEES DOESN’T MATTER. AS LONG AS
THE JOB GETS DONE, SO IS THE MANAGER.
5) THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGER
MEDIUM PEOPLE / MEDIUM TASK
THIS FOCUSES ON THE PEOPLE AS EQUALLY AS THE OUTPUT OF WORK
9. KEYS TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
(CONT.)
• IT HAS BEEN TESTED THAT “TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN TOP LEADERSHIP IS THE
SINGLE MOST RELIABLE PREDICTOR OF EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION.”
• THIS CAN RELATE TO A FEW OF THE MANAGER THEORIES
• COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER AND MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGER
• WHY THESE? BECAUSE THE FOCUS OF THESE LEADERS ARE HIGH ON PEOPLE, THAT MEANS
THE EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION MEANS THE MOST
10. KEYS TO BEING AN EFFECTIVE LEADER
(CONT.)
• EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
• HELPING EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND:
• BUSINESS STRATEGY
• HOW THEY CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMPANIES GOALS
• SHARING INFORMATION WITH THE EMPLOYEES AND KEEPING THEM IN THE LOOP
• THIS AGAIN GOES WITH COUNTRY CLUB MANAGER AND MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MANAGER,
BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT THE PEOPLE ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMPANY. IT CAN
ALSO RELATE TO TEAM MANAGER, BECAUSE EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION LEADS TO HIGH AND
COMPLETED WORK HABITS
11. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP
• EARLIER ON I HAD LISTED A FEW TRAITS OF LEADERSHIP, BUT THERE ARE ALSO
PRINCIPLES THAT YOU USE AS GUIDELINES TO HELP YOU GROW AS A LEADER
AND BECOME THE MOST EFFECTIVE LEADER POSSIBLE
• KNOW YOURSELF AND SEEK IMPROVEMENT
• KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO AND YOUR LIMITS, AND ALWAYS STRIVE TO BE BETTER. THE
WORST KIND OF LEADER IS THOSE WHO DON’T TRY TO IMPROVE
12. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP (CONT.)
• BE PROFICIENT
• YOU MUST KNOW YOUR GOALS, THAT WAY YOU CAN COME UP WITH A CLEAR PATH
TO THAT GOAL
SEEK RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
ALWAYS WANT TO DO MORE, AND EVEN IF A PROBLEM FALLS ON YOUR EMPLOYEE,
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THIS SHOW THE EMPLOYEE THAT YOU CARE
13. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP (CONT.)
• SET THE EXAMPLE
• BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL
• DON’T JUST TALK THE TALK, WALK THE WALK
• KEEP YOUR WORKERS IN THE LOOP
• KEEP THEM INVOLVED
• COMMUNICATE WITH THEM
14. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP (CONT.)
• WORK AS A TEAM
• NO INDIVIDUALS
• MAKE EVERYONE FEEL LIKE THEY ARE AS IMPORTANT AS YOU
• PASS ON YOUR SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY
• DEVELOP GOOD TRAITS
• HELPS THEM BECOME PROFESSIONAL
15. MY OWN OPINION
• AS YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE A LOT OF FACTORS THAT GO INTO BEING A GOOD
LEADER AS A BUSINESS OWNER, AND AS A FUTURE BUSINESS OWNER, A LEADER
IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE.
• BOSSING AROUND NEVER WORKED, AND NO ONE LIKES WORKING FOR SOMEONE
WHO GOES OUT OF THEIR WAY FOR SOMEONE WHO IS SELFISH
16. MY OWN OPINION
• BEING ABLE TO SHOW RESPONSIBILITY, BEING ABLE TO WALK THE WALK, BEING
ABLE TO PASS ON GOOD CHARACTERISTIC TRAITS NOT ONLY IMPROVES YOUR
EMPLOYEES, THAT ALSO IMPROVES YOUR BUSINESS
• HAPPY EMPLOYEES = BETTER WORK ENVIROMENT
17. LETS REVIEW
• A TON OF WAYS TO GO AHEAD AND BE A LEADER, BUT THESE ARE SOME OF THE
MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE A GREAT LEADER
• COMMUNICATE
• WALK THE WALK
• GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
• BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL
18. IN CONCLUSION
• ALL BUSINESS’S WORK IN DIFFERENT WAYS, SOME ARE SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE
THERE IS A MANAGER TYPE BOSS, AND OTHERS WORK WHEN THERE IS A LEADER
TYPE BOSS. BUT I THINK IN THE LONG RUN, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF
YOUR BUSINESS IS THE EMPLOYEES, AND I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL
BE HAPPIER IF YOU LEAD AND HELP THEM, RATHER THAN BE SELFISH AND TELL
THEM WHAT TO DO.
• BEING A LEADER, WHETHER IN A BUSINESS OR ANY OTHER SCENARIO, I BELIEVE
IS THE BEST WAY TO GO
