Introduction
On 18th
April 2018, we went to a site which is located in Morib, Selangor for site
visit. The project is under Sentoria Sdn Bhd and it is about to construct a water park,
semi D and hotel building. The project is started in 2015 and expected to complete in
2020.
Before we went to the site, the safety precautions such as safety helmets and
safety boots had given by our lecturer, Ms Nadirah and collected by all of us. We
went to the site by carpooling and reached there at 10am. After that, a short brief
about the site was given by our lecturers and seniors. We have spent about 2 and half
hours to visit the site and know more about the project.
The objectives of site visit are to:
Explore the different types of building materials and machinery used on site
Observe the activities and techniques carried out on site
Have an up-close view of the entire building structure as opposed to see it in the
drawings
Know the condition of the site and the importance of safety on site
Gain more information about the construction works and learn the experiences
from those supervisors.

Observation & Questions
Observation
- Earthwork: According to the site QS, the piling works are done for most of the
parts and it can be observed that the site has a lot of piles done.
- Structural Works: Most of the steel bars used are high tensile steel bars and
they are all skillfully and tidily constructed.
- Health and Safety: There was a Safety and Health officer and site security that
followed us around which shows that the site is secured and safe.
- Workers: The workers are all in full working uniform with both helmets and
safety boots, which means they follow the rules.
- The site is 22 acres in total size which is huge enough to accommodate both
hotel and water theme park.
- However, the site is quite far away from populated area and there is a
competition in hotel industry as the site is just 5km away from the famous
Gold Coast Resort.
- The site is surrounded by oil palm estate and quite further away from the main
road, with another project of semidetached residential houses which is also
under the developer’s project.
- The construction commencing on the site is very tidy and systematic.
- The site QS that brought us around are very informative as they managed to
answer all the questions asked and provide us with extra information that we
didn’t ask.
- The project seems to be behind schedule and after enquiries, the site QS did
admit their project is slightly delayed.

- What are the reasons that make the client and developer to choose this
particular site for the proposed project?
- How much is the total cost of project together with both the hotel and
semidetached houses?
- How do the company keep the construction site so tidy and the workers so
efficient?

This is the first floor of main entrance building which is equal to 2 floors high.
The water park and beach are still undergoing construction. The excavation and
piling works have been carried out by the workers.

Conclusion
As future Quantity Surveyors, I learn that this site visit has given us a vital and
necessary experience and lesson for us to work in the future. This site visit has
provided us with valuable lessons that definitely cannot be obtained from normal
classes attended in the institutes, even with all the tutorials done.
First of all, I do realize that it will be extremely tiring and more difficult as
expected to work as a Quantity Surveyor in the future as the site visit does require a
lot of time and energy especially when climbing up and down between floors. Also,
we visited the site in a good weather and it sure will be more difficult if there is a bad
weather and require us to visit the site regardless of the weather.
Moreover, we have managed to learn a lot of valuable information from the site
Quantity Surveyors that brought us around the site. They taught us extra lessons such
as what will make a design and build project to be delayed, types of building materials
and their specific uses, and other relevant and useful information.
Last but not least, we do find that the site visit can make us to understand more
about how a site progress usually and what needed to be done when there are
problems such as project delayed. The site visit also manage to teach us to observe
what cannot be seen and examine when we are doing works like measurement and
taking off.
