1.0 Introduction
Lecturer conducted a site visit to a construction site on 18th April 2018. Before the
day go to site, lecturer provide safety helmet and safety shoes to the student that didn’t
had this safety equipment. Student includes a group of diploma student and degree
student. On the day, all students depart to the site and reach there around 10am. The
person in charge is our college’s senior, he also reach the site at the same time and guide
us into the site and brief about the project.
The purpose of this site visit is help student to gain an experience that they will
face in the future and get to know the environment in construction site. Besides that,
students learned that the safety equipment is important when get into a site to prevent any
injured. Students can see the real thing instead of see it from the paper such as tower
crane, scaffolding, and reinforcement bar.
2.0 Project Summary
The project is located at Mukim Morib, Daerah Kuala Langat, Selangor Darul
Ehsan and it’s belonging to Sentoria Morib Bay Sdn Bhd. This project is to build a water
park which requires RM 63,217,500 of contract sum. The construction is start from 1st
Nov 2015 and plans to complete in 23rd May 2020. Below will listed out the companies
that take place in this project:
 Architect: SAM Arkitek Perunding
 C&S: HTM Consultants Sdn Bhd
 M&E: ICL Associates Sdn Bhd
 QS: NIL (in house)
 Contractor: Sentoria Bina Sdn Bhd
3.0 Observation and Questions
 Earthwork – How they process the disposal material?
 Structural work – Is it the size of beam or column can support the building load?
- Slab is suspended slab or non-suspended slab?
 Worker - every worker is wearing the safety equipment and they are laying the BRC
and collaborate with each other.
 Health and Safety – Does every worker wear safety equipment?
4.0 Activities Progress of Works
4.1 Mobile crane lifts the material
In the picture, the mobile crane is lifting the reinforcement bars to the 4th floor for
construction work.
4.2 Laying BRC steel
In the picture, the site workers are taking a BRC steel.
The picture shows that the site workers are laying the BRC steel. The BRC steel
must has the space with each other if not considers fail.
4.3 Reinforcement bar cut and bend
In the picture shows that the workers are cutting the reinforcement bars.
4.4 Excavate the topsoil
In the picture, the excavator is excavating the topsoil for the piling process.
4.5 Installation of reinforcement bar
In the picture, the worker tie the links of the reinforcement bars.
5.0 Material on Site
5.1 Reinforcement bar
Reinforcement bars are widely used in the construction industry. It installs in the
wall, slab, column and more.
5.2 Concrete
Concrete also used in the construction by poured with reinforcing materials
embedded to provide tensile strength, yielding reinforced concrete.
5.3 Damp Proof Course Membrane
Damp proofing in construction is a type of moisture control applied to building
walls and floors to prevent moisture from passing into the interior spaces.
6.0 Plant and Equipment
6.1 Tower crane
The tower crane is a modern form of a balance crane. When fixed to the ground,
tower cranes will often give the best combination of height and lifting capacity and are
also used when constructing tall buildings.
In the construction site, the tower crane passes through the 18 meters height of the
floor.
6.2 Mobile crane
The mobile crane is the common type of crane used in construction today. The
mobile crane consists of a steel truss or telescopic boom mounted on a mobile platform,
which could be a rail, wheeled, or even on a cat truck. The boom is hinged at the bottom
and can be either raised or lowered by cables or hydraulic cylinders.
6.3 Scaffolding
The scaffolding is a temporary structure used to support a work crew and
materials to aid in the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, bridges and all
other manmade structures. Scaffolds are widely used on site to get access to heights and
areas that would be otherwise hard to get to.
6.4 Cut and Bend machine
This machine is used to cut and bend the reinforcement bar on the
construction site.
6.5 Temporary staircase
7.0 Site Valuation Process
The date of site valuation meeting must be set if the contractor wants to
issue the claim to client. The parties involve the meeting are contractor, architect
consultant, M&E Consultant and C&S consultant. The project manager and all the
consultants will visit the construction site and record the construction works progress.
During the meeting , the contractor must provide the progress report, dairy report and
progress claim certificate for the consultants.
After the meeting, the quantity surveyor of the contractor will submits the claim
certificate to all the consultants by email for review verify and approve then just pass to
the client.
8.0 Conclusion
After the site visit, we realized the construction works are different with what we
imagine before we visit the site. We can see the real building instead of just looking on
the drawings. Working in construction site is not that easy because the worker should
climb up the temporary stairs everyday which is just stand a piece of steel. They also
need to work under the hot weather with sweat a lot and easy to get thirst.
From this site visit, we learned that the safety equipment is very important to take
care ourselves. Although the site worker will give us instruction what to do, we still need
to beware everything that may make us injured.
