This 2 month internship training was a fruitful journey as throughout the internship, I learned quite a lot of
new things. From new CAD shortcuts to designing and 3D-modelling, it was a new experience that could
not be achieved in school. I would like to thank Mr. Angus, Ms. Bernice for tolerating us with the delay in
the own placement process. Choosing Garis Architects as my first practical has given me a lot of chance
to get to know new people and the way they work together. Thank you to Mr. Mok for letting me to have
my practical here.
I would like to thank the people in Garis Architects that have been very attentive in helping me to adapt to
the environment and taught me new CAD shortcuts that made my job easier and faster. Many thanks to
Mr. Jim who had given me various jobs throughout my 2 months internship. Mr. Elson and Mr. Joe also
who had helped me a lot during my internship here. And to Ms. Raihana who had come to visit us at this
office, thank you for your visitation with some of your tips and thoughtful thoughts after meeting up with
the supervisors.

Report
Working in Garis Architects has taught me the fast pace working experience which is obviously required in
the real architecture world. MRT project is a hands-on project with back to back submission dates. The
whole 2 months interning at Garis Architects has led me to the MRT project under the supervision of Ar.
Jim, Mr. Elson Tan, and Mr. Jo.
The MRT project is still at submission state. It is a public transportation hub with the estimation of RM 400
million project. It covers the Southern line, which is from Serdang to Putrajaya MRT line. In total, it has 7
stations; Taman Universiti, Equine Park, Taman Putra Permai, 16 Sierra, Cyberjaya North, Cyberjaya City
Centre and Putrajaya Sentral. There are a team that are working under this MRT project. We devided
some tasks since there were a lot of aspects to cover. For my task, I was in charge of the Landscape and
Right Of Way layout plans.
Each floor area are approximately 2520 sqm2 per floor with steel and concrete as the main materials.
MRTs have their typical station layout which is usually the elevated type. In this project several types of
MRT station are designed depending on their site context. Taman Universiti's station is the one and only
half sunken type of station. Equine Park, Taman Putra Permai and 16 Sierra are the elevated ones, while
Cyberjaya North, Cyberjaya City Centre and Putrajaya Sentral are at-grade stations which means the
ground floor would be the concourse area.
After few days of waiting for feedback from consultant, some 3D job needs to be done for the perspective
drawings submission. Using Sketchup, a lot was learned during this phase as I was not familiar with
Sketchup. For my part, I did the 3D model for Taman Putra Permai station. From the plans of Taman
Putra Permai, the station is an elevated with mostly 3 storeys building surrounding it. Site context were
important in viewing the perspective of the MRT.
The consultants were particular about the format of the drawings. From the drawing number to the title
block, all of it were standardize during the submission day, with some amendments need to be done on
the drawing as well.

The MRT project let me work under pressure with its limited time frame after one submission and another.
All in all, everything managed to be done and submitted. I was fortunate to be a part of a huge project
where I can see and feel how it is like to work with.
In between the MRT work, some amendment had to be done to the tender drawings of plans and section
of Clubhouse @ D'Island. Clubhouse @ D'Island is a project for Astana Modal (M) Sdn. Bhd.. It is located
in Sepang, consisting of a 3-storey clubhouse with 1 floor of basement and a pool. The amendment part
was at the cascading water feature and the drainage between the landscape of exercise deck and the
infinity pool. Some calculations had to be done for the 'steps' of water feature at the exterior of the
clubhouse. Throughout the amendment process, the current drafter of the project was there to assist the
amendment done to the plans and sections. This project is in the tender drawing stage with minor
changes upon meeting client's and architect's discussion.
After the MRT project has been submitted to the consultant, the next task given was to design a pavilion
for the Service Apartments @ Jalan Stonor. Situated 10 minutes away from the heart of the city, this
apartment has 400 units of different types of room/studios units. It is now under construction with a cost of
RM 200 million. The floor area of the build-up area is 525925.70 sqm. With the concept of warmth and the
'feeling of belonging', the materials used were rendered concrete, wooden planks, warm lighting with
minimalist furniture and materials.
While working on designing the pavilion, the concept of warmth is still adapted throughout the process.
The pavilion designed is situated at the rooftop of the 40storey apartment. It is for the usage of public
events which offers a view of KLCC. Hence, the pavilion had to be permeable to the outside and inside
world. Glass folding doors were chosen as it can be open for a more spacious event hall. The surrounding
of the pavilion is the green open rooftop area. I proposed sliding wooden strips to filter the light that comes
in into the place when it is directly exposed to the sun. The sliding wooden strips acts as a ‘curtain’ that
could be adjusted and also reflect back the behaviour of the windows and facade that works in a verticality
manner. The folding door can be open to maximise the view and space required. Various proposals were
done to give a variety of design to the glass doors of the pavilion.

During the internship, I also observed how project handling works. It has to go to various authorities and
numerous drawing submissions. In a nutshell, I learned a lot through this internship process. From making
decisions to following instructions, there are a lot of things that will be useful in my future undertakings. I
look forward to have more working experiences like this. Never had I thought that I would have to
overtime on this internship period but that is what makes the experience better.
