PARTS OF SPEECH – A Quick Review
Noun – a person, place, thing or idea.
Adjective – words that describe a noun
Verb – words that describe an action, state or
occurrence, that tell what the subject is doing

Compound noun?

A compound noun is:
a noun that:
~“is made up of two or more words,
~ that work as a single unit,
~ to name a person, place, thing, or idea.”

A compound noun is made by:
~ combining 2 or more words
~ to create a new word,
~ that has a new meaning.

There are 3 types of compound nouns.
1. Closed compound nouns.
2. Open compound nouns.
3. Hyphenated compound nouns.

Type 1. Closed compound nouns
Closed compound nouns are written as a single word, with no
spaces or hyphens between.
Examples:
softball fireplace windshield daytime

Type 2. Open compound nouns
Open compound nouns are written as a two (or more)
words, with only a space between them.
Examples:
ice cream post office high school

Type 3. Hyphenated compound nouns
Hyphenated compound nouns are two words joined together
with a hyphen –
Examples:
mother-in-law part-time self-esteem

There are 4 Forms.
1. Two Nouns
2. Adjective + Noun
3. Verb (ing) + Noun
4. Noun + Verb

Pronunciation Note:

In most cases we stress the first word in a compound
noun.
This helps to distinguish them between words that are
simply followed by adjectives but are not compound
nouns.

  • 5. 5 PARTS OF SPEECH – A Quick Review Noun – a person, place, thing or idea. Adjective – words that describe a noun Verb – words that describe an action, state or occurrence, that tell what the subject is doing
  • 7. A compound noun is: a noun that: ~“is made up of two or more words, ~ that work as a single unit, ~ to name a person, place, thing, or idea.” 7
  • 8. A compound noun is made by: ~ combining 2 or more words ~ to create a new word, ~ that has a new meaning. 8
  • 9. 9 The following words are all compound nouns: softball handshake toothbrush sunburn raincoat doorway bookstore ice cream mother-in-law breakfast post office bedroom windshield birdhouse high school
  • 10. 10 There are 3 types of compound nouns. 1. Closed compound nouns. 2. Open compound nouns. 3. Hyphenated compound nouns.
  • 11. 11 Type 1. Closed compound nouns Closed compound nouns are written as a single word, with no spaces or hyphens between. Examples: softball fireplace windshield daytime
  • 12. 12 Type 2. Open compound nouns Open compound nouns are written as a two (or more) words, with only a space between them. Examples: ice cream post office high school
  • 13. 13 Type 3. Hyphenated compound nouns Hyphenated compound nouns are two words joined together with a hyphen – Examples: mother-in-law part-time self-esteem
  • 14. 14 Different parts of speech are joined together to make compound nouns. There are 4 Forms. 1. Two Nouns 2. Adjective + Noun 3. Verb (ing) + Noun 4. Noun + Verb
