Simple Sentences
 What is a sentence?
Question
 A sentence is a group of words that
tell us about someone or something.
 It may also ask about someone or
something.
Answer
 start with a capital letter
 end with punctuation (. ? ! )
 have a subject
 have a verb
 express a complete thought
A sentence must:
Simple sentences are independent
clauses with one subject and one
verb, and they form one clause. It
must also express a complete
thought.
Simple Sentences
1. Marty ate lunch.
2. The boy ran fast.
3. Mr. Lopez is a teacher.
4. She studies hard.
5. The children play soccer.
Examples:
Simple sentences may seem a little
boring.
So, what can we do to make them a little
more exciting and expressive?
Question
1. We can use adjectives.
2. We can use adverbs.
3. We can use different types of
prepositional phrases.
Answer
The boy walked.
Example:
This is a complete sentence, but it’s not very
expressive.
The young boy walked.
Example:
By adding an adjective, this sentence has
become more expressive. It gives us more
information about the boy.
The young boy walked happily.
Example:
By adding an adverb, we now get a better
image in our minds as to how the boy walked.
The young boy walked happily
to school.
Example:
By adding this prepositional phrase of
direction, we get a better idea of where the
boy walked.
The young boy walked happily
to school early in the morning.
Example:
By adding another adjective followed by a
prepositional phrase of time, we have really
spiced up this sentence!
