The Lions Club of Asansol East Eye Hospital & Research Trust operates the only eye hospital in Asansol, West Bengal, located off Sen Raleigh Road. Established in December 2006, the 10-bed hospital has facilities for outpatient care, refractive services, cataract surgeries and more. In its first 3 months of operation, the hospital saw over 1130 outpatients, performed 41 free and 5 paying cataract surgeries. However, expenses exceeded income, resulting in a cost recovery rate of only 23.68%. To improve sustainability, the hospital plans to increase paying patients and donations while also addressing other major causes of blindness like diabetes, corneal diseases and vitamin A deficiency.
