1) Sidney is nervous to ask Buffy to his school's talent show, but she rejects his mixtape. 2) Years later, Sidney's friend Ricky convinces him to perform at the show again, but they lose the music tracks. 3) Sidney realizes he still has an old mixtape for Buffy, so he and Ricky remake the tracks using household objects and have fun doing it.

SMASH CUT:
EXT. OUTSIDE SCHOOL - DAY - LATE 80'S
Sidney - a year 8 boy in his school blazer - walks gingerly,
clutching onto a tape that he has decorated with hearts and
written: "Mixtape 4 Buffy", towards a taller girl of the same
age, Buffy, who's also in uniform.
He glances behind him to see his best mate Ricky Nicks - a
bigger, baby-faced lad, wearing a bucket hat - who gives
Sidney a goofy but reassuring smile and thumbs up. As Sidney
reaches Buffy he clears his throat awkwardly. Buffy is
reading a big textbook.
SIDNEY
H-hey Buffy. Um, I know you're
probably quite busy with revision.
Buffy slowly looks up from her book.
SIDNEY (CONT'D)
(more nervous seeing her face)
But me and Ricky are doing the talent
show this year and I wondered if you
wanted to come, I also made you a tape
of some of our tracks so you can
listen before the show?
Sidney, shaking, holds out the tape and a talent show ticket.
Buffy tips her head very slightly.
BUFFY
Sidney right? Well thanks...
Time slows.
BUFFY (CONT'D)
But I don't listen to music.
The words come at Sidney with a blast of wind, throwing the
ticket into the air and knocking Sidney to the ground. The
ticket lands on his forehead.
INT. SIDNEY'S BEDROOM - DAY
Sidney Sower sits up in his bed, distressed. Sidney is now 16
years old. He is skinny and spotty.

He is still dressed in school clothes from the previous day
and his hair is dishevelled. There is a post-it stuck to his
forehead reading: "Maths 4 TMRW". He takes it off, reads it,
then scrumples it up and sighs.
PAN TO Ricky - now a baggy skater style teen but in the same
bucket hat - pulling his leg through the window, where there
are marks from him having done this before.
SIDNEY
Ricky!? What the hell are you doing?
RICKY
Sidneyyy! Mate schools just finished,
I thought I'd come see if you were
alive. I'm not doing the show alone.
SIDNEY
What!
Sidney looks at his alarm clock; the sleep button is smashed
to bits.
SIDNEY
Shit okay. Well anyway, I already
said, I'm not doing the show. Why do
you ask me every year?
RICKY
Because the world needs to hear our
fresh beats, Sidney!
Ricky starts taking handfuls CDs out of his pockets and
chucking them on the bed.
SIDNEY
Careful! Don't sabotage the show
before I'm fully convinced to do it.
Sidney looks at the CDs.
SIDNEY
Wait, none of these are the one I need
for it anyway!
Ricky pats his pockets, looks to the window, walks over and
leans out to see.

RICKY
Oh fff...
EXT. OUTSIDE SIDNEY'S HOUSE - DAY
Sidney looks at a shard of the CD case as Ricky picks up a CD
case that is in satisfactory condition.
SIDNEY
(annoyed)
Fantastic. Mate what are we gonna do!
Sidney holds up the smashed empty case with a wet handwritten
cover reading: "Talent Show Tracks".
RICKY
Awww and my 'Wham!' CD!
Sidney frowns at Ricky, tuts and sighs.
INT. SIDNEY'S BEDROOM - DAY
Sidney chucks CD shards into a bin looking defeated and sits
on his bed.
SIDNEY
Well mate, that's that.
RICKY
Um sorry mate! But bun that!
Sidney raises an eyebrow.
RICKY
We could just do it acapella.
SIDNEY
That sounds like the perfect way to
embarrass myself in front of Buffy!
The camera starts to PULL BACK slowly.
RICKY
Dude I really want to do this with
you, don't make it like year 8!
SIDNEY
(looking sad)
Alright! I don't need reminding of
that right now!

RICKY
Well, if Buffy goes tonight, and we
have beats then you could be looking
very cool.
SIDNEY
But Ricky the disc is busted!
(pause)
Unless.
Sidney looks off camera. PULL BACK to reveal a tape recorder
with a microphone on a shelf. Rickey turns to see the
recorder. POV from the tape in the recorder as Sidney opens
it and takes out the tape reading: "Mixtape 4 Buffy"
RICKY
Oooh.
SIDNEY
(hesitant)
Well I was thinking we might be able
to use these tracks but it's probably
a stupid idea.
Ricky gives Sidney an empathising look, takes the tape, puts
it back into the recorder and presses play. There is white
noise and rustling on the tape. Sidney frowns.
SIDNEY
(shocked)
Wait what? It's been wiped!
RICKY
Wait hang on, I think this ais
recording.
The tape stops rustling and Sidney's Mum can be heard
clearing her throat.
SIDNEY'S MUM
Hey Sidney Bean, it's your mum! I
heard what happened with Buffy today
and I want you to know you shouldn't
let it effect your confidence and that
I'm really excited to see you perform
this evening! Even just hearing you
through the walls I know that you
should be really proud of your hip
hopping!
(pause)
Well that's all I guess. I love you.

Oh and sorry if I went over anything
on this tape but I'm sure you can
record more and make it even better!
Sidney stares for a second.
RICKY
How about it amigo, we make some
banging beats, homemade style?
Ricky pulls out a pair of spoons. Sidney exhales from his
nose and then gives a small nod.
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
MONTAGE - Sidney and Ricky record themselves beatboxing and
playing various household objects into the tape recorder. At
first Sidney doesn't join in but just sets up the recorder
but Ricky hands him a pair of chopsticks and he eventually
begins to enjoy himself.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Sidney and Ricky sit at the table next to a hi-fi. Sidney
holds up the completed tape, still reading: "Mixtape 4
Buffy". He looks at it and sighs.
SIDNEY
You'd better be right dude, I hope she
likes it.
RICKY
(looking a bit guilty)
Yep. Yeah. I'm sure she will dude.
SIDNEY
(pause)
What?
(pause)
What is it bro?
RICKY
(guiltily)
Well I didn't wanna be a downer
earlier,
(beat)
but Buffy's not actually gonna be
there.

SIDNEY
(devastated)
What! No.
Sidney sighs a long and disappointed sigh, staring at the
tape. He eventually wipes off the writing and tightens his
grip before Ricky gently takes the tape and puts it into a
tape player. He gives Sidney a little smile and a nod before
pressing play.
MUSIC CUE: A funky upbeat hip-hop instrumental made with
household objects
Sidney remains staring at the ground with disappointment
lingering in his expression. He begins moving his eyes in
time and eventually moving his head almost imperceptibly.
Finally he starts nodding his head in time and a big smile
grows on his face. Him and Ricky meet eyes as they go for a
hearty handshake.
END MUSIC CUE
SMASH CUT to Sidney's mum coming in holding handfuls of
shopping bags and a CD.
SIDNEY'S MUM
(panting slightly)
Heya boys! Sorry I'm a bit late! I
hope you're all ready for the show.
I'm so proud! I'll just change and
then we can go, alright?
Sidney starts taking the tape out of the player and placing
into its case.
SIDNEY'S MUM
Oh by the way, I found this disc
outside, it hasn't got a case; is it
yours?
Sidney's mum holds up a CD that reads: "Talent Show Tracks"
SIDNEY
(smiling)
Hmm, cheers mum, but bun that!
Sidney and Ricky walk passed Sidney's mum and the CD towards
the front door. Sidney's mum turns around and raises her
eyebrow.
