An exploration into scriptwriting, starting with, what I believe to be, some of the fundamentals of of filmmaking and storytelling as a whole. This is all based on what I have learned on the filmmaking course at Leeds Arts University, through my own practical work, lectures and seminars.
The combination of the main product and ancillary texts is effective in establishing Tame Impala's brand. The logo, designs, and themes are consistently carried over from the music video to the digipak, magazine poster, and other products. This consistency creates a recognizable style that builds loyalty among fans. In addition, references to the band's psychedelic rock genre and motifs from the music video help link all the materials to the music. The enigmatic elements of the designs further engage fans and encourage repeated engagement with the band's releases and promotions.
This document provides direction for filming scenes for a music video. It includes timing, camera shots, locations, and actions for various scenes. The overall story appears to be about a girl who feels isolated while wearing headphones and listening to music. She runs through various outdoor locations, has flashbacks to past events, and works on a map trying to make connections. She eventually opens an old chest and has a reaction, implying she found something significant. The document provides highly detailed instructions and timing for capturing these story elements through filmed shots and camera movements.
Intertextuality refers to relationships between texts, where one text makes references to other texts through allusions or direct citations. Julia Kristeva coined the term to describe how an audience's understanding of a text is influenced by codes from other texts. There are three types of intertextual references: obligatory, optional, and accidental. Genres often contain intertextual references through conventions that reference prior works in that genre. Music videos frequently use intertextuality, making references through settings, costumes, and homages to other works, such as Goldfish's references to nerd culture, Madonna's homage to Marilyn Monroe, and Iggy Azalea's recreation of the film "Clueless".
1. Universal Film & TV Licensing is granting Gabriel Kelly permission to use the Tame Impala track "Why Won't They Talk To Me?" free of charge for a student educational project in the UK.
2. The permission is limited to non-theatrical use on college premises for students, parents, tutors and examiners.
3. Kelly must have purchased the track through normal retail channels and only use the copy for the described project without further permission.
Gabriel Kelly and Molly York were co-producers and co-directors of the production, with Gabriel handling additional roles like production manager, casting director, and camera operator. Molly was the location manager and script supervisor. In post-production, Gabriel was the assistant film editor and handled animation and visual effects, while Molly was the head film editor.
The survey results showed that while age had little correlation to music taste, Tame Impala and Twenty One Pilots were commonly cited as favorite artists. The majority preferred a female protagonist. Most people only watch music videos a few times a month but would be likely to view an official Tame Impala video. Friends' suggestions were the most common way people discover new videos. Respondents felt a good narrative and creative story were important, with forest and urban settings being most popular suggested locations. Feedback on the plot ideas was mostly positive.

Button basher step outline
1. Button Basher Step Outline
A smartly dressed man lies asleep on a sofa in a bleak kitchen/living room.
There’s a hob, a second sofa, two fridges, a microwave, lots of cupboards and a poster of a
button that reads “Push Yourself”.
A clock reading “5:00” chimes a dissonant alarm, waking the man.
The man gets up, walks to the fridge and opens it.
Inside is a sandwich wrapped in cling film in the centre of the middle shelf.
The man smiles as he picks up the sandwich.
He walks over to the table and sits on the stool at one end, opposite the poster.
He stares at the clock and clears his throat.
The clock reads “5:05”.
With a satisfying ding, a red button appears in front of the man, in the centre of the table.
Without hesitation, the man presses it, causing it to disappear.
After a few seconds, the button appears again in the same spot, disappearing as the man
pushes it.
This continues and the man begins enjoying himself more each time the button vanishes.
The man tries to press the button lightly with his index finger, which bends from the button's
resistance.
He pauses to think for just a second, before bashing it down with a fist.
He lets out a small closed mouth chuckle.
The clock nears 6pm.
The button suddenly appears a few inches to the right of it’s regular position, causing the
man to miss his press.
Mildly confused, he corrects his aim, trying to remember this new location.
However, when the button reappears it’s further along the table.
As this pattern continues, the man is stumped but still takes joy in bashing the button as it
travels along the table.
Eventually, the button appears on the underside of the table.
The man looks around for a second before finding it.
He seems extra pleased as he presses the button this time.
The clock then strikes 6, making its discordant ringing sound.
The button stops appearing.
The man grins as he reaches for his sandwich and tucks in.
It’s the next day.
The clock turns to 5:05
Sounding the familiar ding, the button appears back in the centre of the table.
The man rushes in, almost falling over.
After tightening his tie, he hurriedly takes his seat and hits the button.
He breathes a sigh of relief as he takes out a baguette sandwich from his pocket and places
carefully to one side.
The button continues reappearing, while the man starts getting creative with his presses:
- Walking his fingers along the table and onto the button.
- Using a different finger for each press.
- Behind the back.
2. - Under the leg.
- Back hand.
- Snake style.
- Flicking it (this one hurts the man's finger and doesn’t work).
With each button press the man gets more and more into his stride, eventually going to
karate chop the button.
The button isn’t there.
The man looks up to the ceiling, where the button is poised directly above it’s usual spot.
The man rolls his eyes.
He stands up on his stool and reaches for the button.
He is a few inches away from being able to press it and so he gets back down.
He looks around before grabbing his sandwich.
He gets back onto the stool and only just manages to press the button with the baguette..
He has to regain his balance as the button vanishes from the ceiling.
As the man slowly gets off the stool, the ding sounds off again.
The man turns around, revealing the button on top of an electric hob.
Without thought, he hits the button, accidentally turning on one of the hob rings.
The man narrows his eyes thoughtfully.
The button then reappears, on a now red hot hob.
The man crosses his arms and sneers.
He then turns off the hob and blows the surface lightly and proudly.
He presses the button, but the remaining heat burns his hand with a sizzle.
The man recoils in pain, blowing his charred finger tips.
Once recovered, the man frowns with annoyance.
The button then appears back on the table.
Looking rather angry, the man smacks the button hard.
The man fiercely bashes the button for the next five or so times it appears.
After this outburst, he looks at his hand, now not only burnt but bruised.
He whimpers.
The button then appears again, this time on the lever of a tap behind the table.
The man slowly approaches the tap, raising an eyebrow.
The man quickly hit the button with his fingers..
This turns the tap on.
The man is startled as water gushes from the spout.
He pauses, looks at his hand, then to the water.
He puts his hand under the stream, which calms his frown as he lets out a relieved exhale.
The button appears with another ding.
The man lifts his eyes to the heavens with pessimistic anticipation before turning around.
The button is next to the clock that is seconds away from striking 6pm.
The man’s face lightens and he rushes over to hit the button.
The clock sounds it’s monotonous tone.
He immediately launches at his sandwich and digs in with a contented grin.
A new day.
The man enters, looking pleased with himself.
He walks to his stool by the table, brushes the seat with his hand and sits.
He pulls a thick cut, double decker, doorstop egg mayonnaise sandwich from his pocket and
places it very carefully to one side.
3. The clock shows 5:05.
The button rings, but it sounds muffled.
It cannot be seen.
The man looks mildly concerned as he scans the room just turning his head.
He looks up at the spot on the ceiling, where it appeared previously, but it’s not there.
He looks under the table, but there’s no button.
He looks in the sink; it’s empty
The man searches all the cupboards pulling out unbranded food boxes and tins and bringing
his stool to search the higher shelves.
He peers into the microwave looking worried.
He looks deep into the bin - there’s just rubbish.
He lifts the cat poster to look, but nothing.
He scans the fridge from top to bottom, where there is half a bottle of milk, a shop bought
coleslaw, and a mystery mouldy tinfoil wrapped food.
The man looks down to the veg draw and his face brightens as he sees a red circle through
the misty plastic.
He opens the draw to see a singular tomato.
His excited smile is shut down by this revelation.
He closes the fridge slowly, staring at the blankness of the door as it shuts.
He jults to attention and looks to the clock.
It’s 5:40.
The man sits onto the sofa and puts his head in his hand.
He eventually puts a hand down onto the sofa.
As he touches it, he brings his head up to look at it.
He then scrambles to look down the sides of the sofa cushions.
He pushes his hand down every possible nook around the seat of the sofas, but to no avail.
The man returns to sit with his head in hands, this time letting out a quiet sob.
The camera reveals the underneath of the sofa where the man sits.
The button rings out again but quietly and lights up slightly, showing it’s right under where
the man is sitting.
The man's face turns to surprise.
With a better idea of where the button is, he slowly gets down to look under the sofa.
When he sees the button, his expression turns to annoyance.
As he pushes the sofa from over the button, he gets more worked up and as the button is
revealed he looks at it angrily.
In a fluster of rage he stamps on the button with his foot.
His anger fades immediately and is replaced by guilt.
The man slowly lifts his foot, and looks regretfully at where the button was.
The button dings again on the table.
The man turns to see and as he does, his sorrowful look morphs into an appalled grimace.
The button is on his sandwich.
The man walks over.
He tries moving the sandwich from under the button, but it is firmly attached.
He tries picking up just the button, but the sandwich follows.
He tries shaking the button off, but it doesn’t budge.
With the sandwich in one hand, the man tries pushing the button lightly with his index finger,
but the force is not enough.
He lets out a small cry.
4. He then places the sandwich slowly down on the table.
He covers his eyes with one hand and raises the other above the button.
After a long hesitation the man smacks down onto the button and his beautiful sandwich.
This sends all of the slushy egg mayo right out of it’s bread casing, and some onto the table,
through the plastic wrap.
The button disappears as normal and the man looks at his eggs covered palm in disdain.
The clock strikes 6 and lets out its discordant groan.
The man, now very upset, decides to grab it and chuck onto the floor.
This smashes the clock causing it to let out a last dying chime that grinds to a crackle before
stopping.
The man takes a breather to collect himself.
Before long, the button appears again, in the centre of the table.
The man looks at it stunned.
He slowly lifts his hand to press it but it vanishes before he can push it.
The man is defeated, he sits at the table and puts his arms around his head on the table.
With another ding the button appears again.
The man lifts his head slowly and looks towards the button.
It lies on the poster of a cat.
The man gets up and goes to hit the button but it disappears before he reaches.
It immediately appears further along the wall, where the man tries again.
Each time the button vanishes before the man can get it, but it slowly leads him out of the
room and towards a wardrobe.
Eventually the button appears on the door of the wardrobe.
The man again tries to push it but fails.
The button disappears and then its ding sings from within the closet.
The man slowly opens the door and looks in.
The button appears on his shoulder but he doesn't take his eyes away from the cupboard as
he takes something out.
And as a huge smile appears on his face, he lifts up a Bop-it.
