90% of children in India don’t go for College Degree

Yes it is true that “90% of children in India don’t go for College
Degree” and it is 2014.
Let’s find out the reasons and methods to improve the circumstances.
Whenever we talk about educational standards of our country people
give examples of IITs, NITs, AIIMS and IIMs and say, yes! We do have
world class institutions.
For now if we take the case of engineering, how many students study in
15 IITs or 30 NITs?
How can you just make a case study on those 45 colleges to argue about
the educational standards of whole nation?
Most of you will not take a second to answer my previous question and
would say that yes! Any Indian can study there by scoring the prerequisite
marks.
I agree that any Indian can study there but can every Indian study there?
The answer is no.
The next question is why have we assumed that total number of students
who deserve a quality education is 26000 (it is the total number of seats
in all IITs and NITs)?
The only reason behind the number 26000 is the infrastructure and how
can we let infrastructure determine that how many students need a
quality education?
How can one say that the student getting 26001st rank does not deserves
what 26000th one does?
Now some of you would say there are colleges other than IITs and NITs
and that’s where I wanted to bring you all, the major drawback in our
system the Decentralization of resources and focus.
On one hand we have IITs and NITs with world class infrastructure
and quality teaching and on the other hand in the same country we have
the private colleges, state government colleges, and trust managed
colleges.
The point is if these colleges were functioning properly why we needed
IITs and NITs and if these colleges are not functioning properly why are
they still running? Why they are even licensed to teach?
If we see the ground level reality, some colleges don’t even have required
number of teachers and rest is self-explained.
So, by decentralization of resources and focus I mean that the focus of
government is totally towards prime institutions which constitute a very
small part of all the institutions of country and other colleges are very
irresponsibly managed.
To overcome this challenge government should improve such
institutions by adapting the same methodologies as in case of prime
institutions and the institutions which can’t be improved in a limited time
should be banned with immediate effect because I believe “teaching
nothing is better than teaching wrong”.
This was the discussion basically on higher education which only 10% of
students get currently and what about rest 90% who are still in darkness?
Effective school education is more important than higher education
because school education has more impact on character as well as
academic standards of a student. Our school education system is
challenged by huge number of problems which range from lack of
infrastructure to lack of quality and management.
A large number of boards are running schools with their own
curriculum and system which makes it tough to compare all the students
of country on a single scale and generates non-uniformity in our
educational system which further leads to the need of separate
competitive examinations for admissions in higher education courses. To
overcome this all the schools across the country should be affiliated to a
single central board and must be run on the same curriculum.
The curriculum should be so designed that students don’t aims on
memorizing the answers to a set of questions rather it should be such
that it makes students think and present their own views about a
particular phenomenon (especially in science and mathematics related
subjects) because the study of a course must lead to gain of knowledge
and understanding of the phenomenon related to it not the memorizing
of data related to it.
The examination and the grading system are at its worst presently.
In place of the traditional examination system we should adapt to a
system that examines the abilities not the memory of the student.
Memory is present even in machines then what is so special in
memorizing something? Nothing absolutely! Machines can’t think and
there comes the need of human mind! Hence the examinations should
assess the thinking, analyzing and other abilities of student not the
memorizing power. Additionally it should not be a single but a series of
examinations over the whole course period that defines the grades
awarded to the student.
Someone can’t be forced to study something he can only be forced
to read and memorize something so the subject what one studies should
be something that he is curious to know. In other words the branch or the
field of study should not be decided based on anything else than the
interest of the student.
Knowledge can’t flow unidirectional because if someone tells you
something new and you are interested in knowing it, you will for sure ask
him more about it and there comes the most ignored thing in today’s
educational system “the teacher-student relation”. It should not be one
sided, the students shouldn’t fear the teacher rather they must be frank
enough to ask any doubt they come across while thinking about anything.
Though some of you would say that there are bigger challenges to
educational system than what I discussed above like poverty,
unawareness etc. but I believe if the basic things of educational system
are so improved that nobody can complain about it the other problems
will self-destruct themselves and people from all the parts and all the
categories will come to know the importance of education after they see
a few examples.
Concluding the discussion we can say that, we have sufficient potential to
develop the infrastructure all we need to do is to revise our system and
make it more transparent, uniform, responsible, well-managed and strict
for a better educational standard of our country.
