The Impacts of Educational System in Cambodia (at Primary Schools)
I. Introduction
Education is the main thing of human requirement and plays a vital role to develop
each country. One country can develop according to its citizen, they have enough good
education. In each country, the educational systems are some differences and some of them
are similar. It means that they organize their educational system by focusing on teaching
method, flexible policy and difference situations. Moving to our Cambodia nowadays, it is
more interested to our education. A few years ago (2014-now) The Minister of Education
Youth and Sport has changed the form of educational field in order to have better process
and develop in time with developing countries. For that, we examine that the result which
occurred from that change by practicing is just only 50% (effectiveness) and other 50%
(limited/low effectiveness). So that, we want to ask that: what are the problems that make the
educational field reply slowly like this. Anyway, some of the environmental learners and
educators have shown that: the educational system at primary school still has limited. This
opinion requires us to think and try to understand all together.
II. Aims of Research
 To find out the cause that make the educational system at primary schools be limited.
 To learn and convey about the primary students learning attitude.
 To find the factors that affect to the quality of student learning.
 To inform and give clear feedback from research with the real aspect of educational
activities at primary school in order to change it be better.
III. Research Question
According to four purposes above, we will research to show that:
 What cause that makes the educational system at primary schools be limited?
 What problems that the primary school students face in subject learning?
 What factors that affect to student learning?
2
 How should we do in order to participate and enhance the educational system at
primary schools get better and best quality?
IV. Research Hypothesis
In general, the education at primary schools gets success when the students can know
or understand the knowledge and give feedback to the teachers/educators about what they
have gotten from his/her. It means that students will be able to have enough capacity and
catch up the knowledge, skill, and attitude that are transferred by the teachers. In contrast, we
see that some of students at all primary schools still have no enough abilities to catch up the
knowledge from the teachers that relevant to the ability of writing, reading, and calculating
in Khmer and Mathematic subjects. All of these causes are the problems that will make the
educational system at primary schools be limited. Depending to what we research and find
about these views, we can determine like that: the images, students ’attitude, and the
affecting factors of primary school students are caused with three main factors. They are: (1)
teachers, (2) students & family, and social factors.
V. Data collected
To support and make clear about the hypothesis above, we have had much information
and answering by interviewing to our audiences such as male-female teachers, school
principals, educators, students, and parents. We just gained the information by using personal
interviews and focus groups; and collecting from primary data.
The results of research can compare with the hypothesis above by direct interviewing
with those interviewee groups and it will be shown under the following headings;
a) Mr Pov Sreang (Director of Hun Sen Prekanhchanh primary school) said that: “there
are many students who get nothing about how to write and read the letters, word,
phrase, sentence, paragraph, and text. For this, it might have been grade 1 to grade 3
students in my school. Students couldn’t have written and read because their teachers
lack of attention to guide them correctly and clearly. Teachers just teach them by
following the time of the lesson. They need to finish their lesson and just say “ok”
when they asked their out-standing students understand or not. So that, to help those
student teachers should take the time and pay much attention to their students learning
activities. They should correct the students’ mistake and evaluate them much time to
improve their abilities to be real”.
b) Mr Khem Sokhom (Teacher at grad 6) told that: “some of students have problems with
their physical and mental ability, so they are difficult to catch up what the teachers
have taught them. Others are careless with their studying. It is shown by their natural
behavior. It means that they are not interesting much about studying. They just come

to learn in order to have a time to play something with other student at school (playing
than learning). Even though, our teachers try to explain or write something much time
on the white board they still do not listen and look at the white board. For these two
problems, they are the strict points that why our education gets low”. To help and
correct these kinds of student,
c) Ms Touch Sovannara (an officer of Mukkompol Disrtict Hall) joined to share some
comments that: she has recognized that the educational systems at primary schools
were still low. She also found the factor that cause or affect to students learning
outcome. The qualities of teaching and learning between the teacher and student were
not yet to response with our educational policy efficiently. She mentioned on the
teachers ‘ability. Some of teachers had no enough knowledge or specific skills with
their carriers. They taught their students unclear about the lesson sometime.
d) Miss Piseth Vichara (an out-standing student in grade 6) said that: “I see some of my
friends’ lack of ability to write the words and paragraphs. When they come back
home, they have no enough time to learn by themselves. They are busy to help their
family to do housework. For example, when they stay at home, they have to help their
parent to cook rice, look after their brother and sister, watch over and protect home,
watch over the animals, and do farm so on”. It means that their parent do not provide
them enough time to make up their study get better. Parent does not care much about
their children learning.
e) Mr Earn Mengeang (a commune principle in Prek Anhjanh Commune) gave some
ideas that: “nowadays in our society, some places full of bad things that can affect to
students’ learning. Some students live near the block of gambling, drinking
(alcoholic), drugging, insulting, and violence so they can make them get bad routines
from those blocks. Sometime children see that all people around them are not higher
educator just get low education. So that, they do not pay attention to learn something
from school. They just learn or like to follow the people who live in their block. In
contrast, some children want to learn and care their study so much, but no one
encourages, helps and gives value to them. It strongly affects to their studying and
makes them have mental illness that cause them get lower and lower ability from
learning”. This is called social factor which is a serious thing affecting to our
educational system at primary schools.
