This document provides information on various measuring and marking tools used for sewing. MEASURING DEVICES
Tape Measure – 2 essential for taking
body measurement 60” length.
Transparent Ruler – is useful to
check grainline of the fabric; to mark
buttonholes. Let you see what you
mark.

cross grains; squaring off straight
edges.
FRENCH CURVE – useful when re-drawing
construction lines on patterns,
especially in curve areas.

YARDSTICK – best device for taking
long straight measurements, also for
checking grainless.
SEWING GAUGE – is a 6” ruler with
a sliding marker that adjust to desired
measurement, constant.

Skirt Marker – is an easy to use,
accurate tool for marking hems.
Dressmaker’s gauge – measures
different size scallops, straight side will
measure buttonholes, pleats and
tucks.
